And they aren't witnesses. They're accusers. Alleged victims.

I'm not sure how much you know about the legal system, but the alleged victim of a crime is considered a witness, and in fact is frequently called forth to testify as the primary witness of a crime, especially one like sexual assault. The things they say are recorded and used as hard evidence in legal cases.

Yeah, good luck on convicting someone on the hard evidence of the prosecuting parties own words. Hell good luck in getting a trial with that or even a warrant.

But isn't it in fact completely unrelated?

How old is he now? 50? How many years ago was this? There's no proof whatsoever that he did anything in recent times.

I know it LOOKS BAD ("oh you appointed a sexual assaulter as an SC judge") but is there an actual good reason why it needs to disqualify him aside from PR?

His CURRENT character is not in question. And neither are his legal skills (which are in SC ballpark). So why is it relevant if he did or didn't do something some 30+ years ago?

Because it would be dismissing what he did as acceptable. It would be saying, "Oh you did a horrible thing 30 years ago, but, you know, its fine because it was back in the day."

This man is up for one of the most influential posts in American public life, and if he is appointed, it will send a message to young men and boys everywhere that you can treat people like garbage, assault them, and laugh about it, but still enter into one of the most privileged positions in our society.

And would that message not be true?

Do you know a lot of nice successful people? A fairly good proportion of them used to/do treat people like garbage. Our whole society is founded on exploitation...

If anything, people need to know that there are many types of success and if anything, to have less respect for many so-called successful people.

As for the people commenting on how Kavanaugh "looks guilty" or "acts guilty" let me tell you something...

Its VERY easy for people to look guilty.

When someone is suddenly singled out by the system, and everyone gives you the eye... its a huge shock. Its not at all abnormal for some people to be shell-shocked and just reply kind of nonchalantly while still trying to process the incredulity of it all. Those people "look guilty."

Not everyone jumps into the Angry I'm Innocent How Dare You Fucking Accuse Me mode.

Its VERY easy to look "guilty" in a formal proceeding especially with all the widespread assumptions about how innocent people ought to respond to specific things. The whole process is inhumane.

I've been in trouble before (wrongly accused) and every single time I looked and behaved guilty as hell (by simply being too calm and detached) because I'm the type of person who's a fish out of water when accused.

That message is a terrible one, and if you see no problem in sending that message then I think we have a fundamental, moral, disagreement.

If we do not show that this kind of behaviour is wrong it will continue, and that is simply unacceptable.

Speaking as someone who realistically uses data like that in the real world, not only is it not useless, you clearly don't understand what you're talking about.

This is not business. This is politics. And considering how only 5% of Hedge Fund managers in the "real business world" beat the market, I'd say that political scientists probably get it right more often than businessmen.

Data is useful. Finding out that an election might be won by a Republican, or a Democrat, when they're the only two candidates running, is useless. Are you really not seeing that?

Example A: 80% sure that the outcome will range from what looks like D+5 to R+4 - that poll is useless if you want to know which candidate will win.

Example B: 80% sure that the outcome will range from what looks like D+11 to D+2 - that poll is useful if you want to know which candidate will win.

See the difference? I guess the big data types of NSG go so much into detail, that they spectacularly fail to see the forest. And if it happens on NSG, it probably happens IRL, (something to double check,) which means I can take advantage of it. Thanks for the info guys!

You go right ahead with your 5th grade understanding of statistics and try taking advantage of that. Let me know how it goes will you?

Yeah.. and you know how guilty people tend to act.. all outrage and faux shock and finger pointing that they were accused at all..

I think most reasonable people are fine to say they couldn't decide either way. We can argue this, that and the other without ever saying 'I know..', but that is equal on both sides, we can't know she's lying as much as we can't know he is.

Still, he's running for the Supreme Court, he should expect to be grilled and he should expect to be accused. Much as he took part in grilling and accusing Clinton using all the same tactics. Clinton was proved guilty lying about a sexual affair.. powerful people lie about such things as do many other people.

So I don't see any double standards here or why he should act so outraged and offended. We can't know anything, yet he had nothing to lose in acting calm and stately over pulling a tantrum.

Ideally he gets confirmed even after his baby tantrum and that fuels resentment amongst women voters and push them Democrat for the midterms.
