by this logic someone who steals a car and runs over someone would be charged for murder but the owner of the vehicle would be charged for leaving the vehicle unsecure(or the person simply broke into the vehicle)

Again, we can treat different goods differently. And guns are much easier to secure when not in use than cars.

Let's start charging gun control advocates as accessories in any crime that could have been prevented by a good-guy-with-a-guntm. You know, while we're holding political enemies responsible for the criminal actions of others.

When guns are not in use they should have the bolt removed or made inactive through other means, locked in a safe, and any ammunition should also be locked up. In fact try not to keep ammo in your house if you can avoid it, start a range trip by buying ammo. If you have the chance to lock up your guns at a shooting range or police station you should definitely do so.

There are plenty of reasons to own guns, but unless you've pissed off a cartel or something you are not making yourself safer. At all.

The idea is the stress of the situation will make it difficult to access a safe. And it all depends on where the safe is, I suppose. I'd really just have some information available on safe and concealed (yet still accessible) areas in a bedroom/living area/whatever where one could keep a loaded firearm.

Personally, I'm not worried about home invasions all that much - should it happen, I might try to go for my usually-locked up 1911 if I have the time, but I'll take my chances with a baseball bat (I also live in an apartment, so I'm worried about overpenetration, even if .45 doesn't typically do that) should it come down to it.

I have a 9mm S&W M&P shield that I keep in a biometric safe that’s in my dresser. That gun is always loaded so that’s why it’s in the safe. I just put my fingers on the safe and it pops open.

I’d recommend a biometric safe.

I chamber a round if I'm leaving the house, otherwise, meh, it's just something I do(just in case worst case scenario a kid does happen to make it up stairs)

regardless, chambering a round takes very very little time and when I sleep my bedroom door is locked.

Ya I live in a shitty area. My neighborhood isn’t bad but the one just down from us is pretty bad.

I don’t sleep with door locked because of the way my house is built.

may I recommend at least getting a lock installed on your master bed room, I lock it at night so that if someone manages to break into my house it gives me more time to react.

Here is the gist of what I know about handguns and their storage, courtesy of an Embassy security officer in Colombia.

A handgun is a tool for taking human life at close range. It is useless for anything else, including as a deterrant. If you choose to own a handgun you must be prepared to kill anyone you feel is coming to kill you. Not incapacitate, not wound. Kill.

There is only one safe way to store a handgun. The gun body in one location, locked. The magazine or cylinder in a second location, locked. And the ammunition in a third location, locked. Under no conceivable circumstances outside of action movies will you be under threat of your life in less time than it takes you to unlock your gun, magazine or cylinder and ammunition and put them together.

Even if you are prepared to kill anyone coming to kill you, even if you store your gun as above, you had damn well better not be depressive, alcoholic or addicted in the least degree or live with anyone who is. If not you are much, much more likely to harm yourself or someone close to you than you are to deter or stop an intruder.

Here endeth the lesson.

We're not going to control the pandemic!

It is a slaughter and not just a political dispute.

"The scraps of narcissism, the rotten remnants of conspiracy theories, the offal of sour grievance, the half-eaten bits of resentment flow by. They do not cohere. But they move in the same, insistent current of self, self, self."

I’m definitely going to look into better solutions, but alas, I’m a college with a limited gun budget.

Even still, I’d use the pistol more for deterrence purposes. I’m of the impression, at least in my area, that most petty burglars aren’t going to suffer a murder charge (or get killed) for the electronics in my living space. I do keep the loaded magazine with it just in case, though.
