Oh look news about BELGIUM, BITCH. Given the subject my enthousiasm is probably a bit misplaced but I'll take anything just so I can briefly stiffle the endless and repetitive cycle of American politics, abortion debates and threads made by Alpha Limes, Xerox printers and mushrooms.

So recently there has been some kind of a buzz in Belgium about a movement called "Schild en Vrienden" (Shield and Friends), which basically centers around topics like the rejection of growing multiculturalism, feminism, immigrants, political correctness, etc.

At least that's how they present themselves.

Personally I don't know all too much about them. They seemed annoyed that their views were being ignored and oppressed, so they decided to gather up and ignore and oppress (read: "troll") people they disagreed with. They did this one thing where they began harassing a bunch of leftists having some protest or whatever, and from that I mostly got the impression they were a bunch of edgy right-wing memelords. Turns out I was right, because recently it was revealed they had been posting a slew of "offensive memes" and spent a lot of their free time harassing leftists and feminists. They mostly stuck to the classics, racism and sexism, mixed with some glorification of Nazis. Despite that, they portray(ed) themselves a respectful movement that doesn't condone racism and doesn't align itself with strong nationalistic sentiments, presumably to avoid coming across as too extreme - there were some leaked comments where they "planned" to gradually infuse their views into society through moderation.

Anyway, there was this report about their activities on hidden Discord servers and private Facebook groups and their...ehh "leader", I guess, was confronted. He denied it, which failed horribly. Eventually he got kicked out by the University, and I think several others were as well.

So my question to you all is: what do you think about this? Did he/they deserved to get booted out of uni? If someone's posting history on the internet was suddenly made public, would you find it acceptable if they suffered similar repercussions? Also, would you be royally fucked if your posting history got leaked?

Personally, I don't think he deserved to get kicked out of uni, even though he's a bit of an edgy - and more importantly, cringy - twat. I feel like he should've owned up to it and try to salvage the situation, but he failed horribly. You lie once and everything else you say can be cast in doubt.

I also feel the media reacted exessively indignant and watching the report I just felt like it was made to convince people these people are the scum of the Earth and offensive memes are spawn of Satan. Plus the current (di)rector of Ghent University is a bit of a sleazy asshole who wants to garner public favor so for that reason I'm slightly more against the decision.

It's just all very cringy and I wanted you all to know this is what Belgium is up to these days.

It worries me that your society will just up and casually accept evidence that, from what I just read in your post, was gained through some method of hacking. Always the chance for tampering. Isn't that kind of shit supposed to be illegal?

So he was kicked from a university along with several others, but now what? Could the group possibly sue the university, get a ton of money, and force the university to let them continue attending the school anyway? I don't know the laws of your country so please let me know about this.

And if all that happens, then what was the point? Some temporary reprieve from their presence? That's not worth the effort, to me. If they can sue and win.

In any reasonable society they should be able to bankrupt the university for the expulsion.

That makes even less sense.

Ehh.. to you. I could see how that would be reasonable. It could be reasonable to have something like this in place in a society to prevent any group or institution from abusing a certain cultural value or law toward their own gains.
