2011 G4S take over the running of HMP Birmingham, 7 years later they have made a total mess of it. The whole privatised prisons idea should be dead in the water from now on.

What is especially stupid is the government may return the prison to G4S after they have sorted out the current problems.

Everything the British government privatises turns to dust.

First, the concentrated expertise disperses, to the private sector or to other fields. The knowledge base is lost.

Secondly, the contractors charge the state a higher price. Due to dispersal of its experts, the state has no idea whether it is being charged a good rate or not. So it just accepts.

Thirdly, the contractors asset-strip whatever is available, turning whatever cash they have gained into dividends or spending it on mergers & acquisitions. They begin to fire more and more staff and cut more and more useful services and charge central or local government more and more in order to transfer more cash into dividends/m&a.

The cracks in the service appear, to a point it collapses and has to be taken over by the state again. Then the state will spend taxpayer cash repairing it, and then... the cycle begins again.

Shockingly it turns out that radically altering your association with a continent spanning organization of 28 nations enmeshed in a million and one layers of of bureaucracy, laws and agreements built up over half a century, that is also your largest, closest, and most important trading partner and neighbor, is actually a tiny bit more complicated than just repeating "BREXIT MEANS BREXIT!"

May is still flailing about waiting for that Act of God that is going to deliver THE Magic Deal that is going to going to give the Brexiteers and Remainers and the EU and everyone in between everything they ever wanted and thus let her remain PM and avoid that fusillade of daggers aimed at her back and front for March 30.

NHS Segregation discriminating against men and meaning they get less access to care.

The rules, drawn up in 2010, say male and female patients should not be housed on the same wards, in a bid to protect patient dignity.

But the new study suggests that men suffering from eating disorders are getting worse access to care, because hospitals are prioritising single sex wards for female patients.

The whole "seperate but equal" meme being disproven again, and the biases of the NHS and wider society being revealed. (female supremacy.)

The research, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, also found that nine in ten patients with eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia were in favour of mixed sex wards. Patients told researchers that all-female wards could encourage “competitive” tendencies - which could be lethal among those with such conditions.

Happily this issue is now being rectified.

Organisation makes decision based on somewhat antiquated sensibilities.
Makes silly oversight as a result.
BJP discovers it is actually bad.
Organisation takes steps to rectify.

Doesn't sound very 'female supremacy', since (your phrasing) seems to say they're agreeing to change it because they accepted it was a mistake highlighted by the BJP, they're not fighting it in the courts.

He's a hedge fund manager IIRC, so quite possibly. idk about how directly he owns stock.

But he probably does and is probably why G4S were hired to do such a shitty job of the Olympics that they had to bring in the fucking army.

Who? And more importantly, why? May might be the safest PM in history until March 30, no sense in wasting the sacrificial lamb. Waiting until after the dust settles on Brexit, blaming May for everything, and nattering about how you totally could have done it all so much better is much more effective than being in the big chair when the bomb goes off and muttering about how May didn't leave you enough time.

The first is an unsubstantiated internet rumour.

There are lots of links with ex-Ministers though. Like John Reid who is a consultant to G4S.

I mean they did seem to get all the big contracts while she was HomeSec even after all the stuff about murdering asylum seekers came out.

There is a very limited pool of companies that are large enough to bid for those kind of contracts. Even more limited since Carillion went bust.

It's what, G4S, Serco and what else?

I mean I've been to a Serco-run prison and it didn't seem like a shitshow.

This is called the soft budget constraint problem and happens all the time in nationalised industries as well (if not more often, because in a well functioning economy contractors can compete with each other), whenever you have separation of the "principle" and the "agent".

Except this isn't an issue of nationalised industries or governance themselves, but the failure to treat nationalised industries as state organs.
When BNFL was a state industry, it too had a lot of 'soft budget constraint' problems, because the government simply wasn't willing to be bothered to shell out money for needed things and treated it like a private contractor (as they were trying to privatise it).

BNFL were particularly noted for the 'deluxe model' strategy, where they had a project that needed done and would draft a 'deluxe' proposal wayyyyyy out of government's pale to make the actual necessary work look palatable.
And to be strictly clear, I'm talking about major renovations and remedial works that would otherwise not be done. Such strategising is expressly illegal now iirc.

I'm not necessarily calling for their nationalisation. Obviously nationalising the service has a host of other problems assigned to it also. In the case of prisons they should be nationalised but in general this is just a problem with our country and its dysfunctionality. It's part of our financial model.

future historians are going to have intense debates on whether england became socially dysfunctional which caused it to build a dysfunctional economy or whether england created a dysfunctional economy which caused it to become socially dysfunctional. it will likely be a mixture of both.
