Sorry that this is really nit-picky, but my character’s name is spelled incorrectly in the Character Checklist

I don’t use some of the NS Stats, but I applaud it for trying. This nation kinda sort-of ish pseudo represents my views. Not all of it, just some.

Name: Father Gascoigne
Gender or Sex: Male
Age: 21

Class: Hunter
Personality: A reserved and somewhat quiet yet devout Hunter, Gascoigne enjoys the thrill hunt, and is a rather loyal person.
Backstory: A former priest from another land where he earned the title of "Father", Gascoigne had recently made a pilgrimage to Yarnham to join the Healing Church. What reasons he had are very much kept to himself, though it is possible that he was sick himself, and one who sought treatment. Perhaps, as a Holy Man himself, sought out the Church on the idea of tracking the scent of miracles. Or, as some might think, the lure of the Hunt drew his bloodlust.

Before his time joining the Healing Church, Gascoigne had been, as previously stated, a holy man from a different land, somewhere off in the far west. In the small community he had once been a part of, he was known for his usual quietness yet ability to become an entrancing speaker when he wished to. Other than his priestly duties, he was also one who often participated in community projects, usually the building of homes or working of farms. During his free time, he would often go into the local forests to hunt, and often was the one who brought food to others through such means.

It is known that, as a member of the Church, he, among others, was responsible for the purging of not only the already sickly folks that dwelled throughout Yarnham, but also those who were likely to become infected. Gascoigne in particular became quite adept in his area of work, and has become somewhat renowned amongst the Church for his skills whilst being so fresh among their Hunters.
Attributes
  • Blinded - It is theorized that some members of the Church voluntarily cut out their eyes, either in an attempt to gain insight, or to stop themselves from going mad when viewing any of the Great Ones, or something similar in nature to either of the two.
  • Enhanced Senses - From his blindness, Gascoigne's other senses grew greatly keen on order to compensate for his lack of eyesight. His sense of smell, especially, is quite sharp.
Equipment:
  • Hunter's Axe
  • Modified Pistol (Shoots similarly to a Blunderbuss)
Appearance: Gascoigne is a rather physically intimidating figure, somewhat tall and decently muscular, with wide shoulders, dressed entirely in black, save for a silvery-white scarf around his neck, but otherwise clad in a long coat, a vest, a button-up shirt, some trousers tucked into boots, and a wide brimmed hat and gauze wrapped around his head to obscure his eyes. His hair is a brown colour, somewhat long, with a short, somewhat wild beard.

Gascgoine is blind? Didn't even know that.

Anyways expand on the backstory a bit, and he wouldn't where black yet. The Healing Church Hunters were the ones wore specific colored uniforms, the Workshop Hunters did not.

Fixed the outfit.

But yeah, he's at least blindfolded, but in the context of Yarnham (he's not the only one with probably missing eyes) and through his dialogue of smelling blood, it's not too hard to put together that he's blind and, with it, at least has an awfully acute sense of smell.

I would like to ask what would be best to add into his bio, because there's not too much more about him besides what I've written, at least up to the point of him having a family with Viola, which is think would be a bit later in his life.

Maybe what he did in the other country? BB is quite vague but since you are playing the character than its up to you to make him a real character.

Here's an example: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=445888

Look at the app on the first post. I am playing Lady Maria a character in game with little backstory besides a few snippets. You don't have to be as detailed as me, but just use the lore given to add your own take.

Just read it. Great world building on your part. You really breathed life into the setting beyond the snippets we got in the game.

I'm not exactly sure how old Father Gascoigne would be in the timeline prior to the founding of the Healing Church Workshop, but I was under the impression he would be a much younger guy tbh due to how save for him and maybe Eileen, other characters in the game like Vicar Amelia, Alfred, Iosefka, the Good Hunter seem to least a generation or two removed from the events of the Old Hunters considering their age and the lack of public knowledge of the beastly plague and the Hunts it inspired at this point in the history.

Since Gascoigne had been alive during the events of the game (only succumbing to the plague prior to the player's arrival), I would assume that he would either be at a really advanced age at that point (though not as old as Gehrman somehow?) or that he was really young at this point in the timeline. I know the game isn't really clear about the exact passage of time, but that's the reason why I didn't app as let's say a young Amelia or Alfred despite being really wanting to do so due to how the age part just didn't work out in my head (at best they probably would be children at this point).

EDIT: Not saying that I don't think having Father Gascoigne here would be cool, but I just feel like he would be on the younger end of things imo.

I agree, Eileen tells us that Henryk and Gascoigne were both very old hunters; that is why I allowed him to be a hunter. If anything I think the only thing in relation to that needs to be changed is the age. Maybe lower 27 to like 19,20.

I noticed and it fits imo. There are already strong parallels in the game between the Healing Church and Catholicism, especially with how Vicar Amelia's ritual prior to her boss fight greatly resembles Holy Communion through the way her hands are positioned.

Were you in anyway inspired by this analysis of the game btw? I admit that's where my above observation came from. xD

Í would probably say that Gascoigne is a somewhat older fellow, though not particularly so. Maybe in his late 50s considering the greyed hair yet decent physique of the character model (unless his hair is naturally a dark grey, which is unlikely). But considering that he had been a priest before coming to Yarnham to join the Healing Church, I think it would be a rather educated guess to think that he wasn't too young. But, alas, it's all rather speculative. But yeah, I'll lower the age, though I think at least 21 would be a more appropriate number, though I don't wish to have it be too much of a bother. I'd like to be as "most likely" on the matter of Gascoigne in relation to his history as I can get with such little information on him, biological age included.

Scala Sancta came from my own personal relationship with the Catholic Church; the communion parallel he mentioned I noticed when I first but it was cool that he saw.

I studied Campbell's Hero's Journey in Anthro so it wasn't new to me either. I was inspired by his video so you're right, but I have a few issues with him and Campbell. The anti-myth though came from my previous knowledge with Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror and how he unintentionally inverted it.

The vague history of BB makes it kinda difficult to set a specific timeline; it has to be at least a couple generations, enough for the Church to encompass the city.

21 works, you're young but not the youngest person in the Rp.

I'm impressed. While I received a Catholic education at grade school, I haven't been the most conscientious when it comes to my faith up to this point (which I've been recently trying to change) so I lacked the same intimate knowledge of the ritual that you and the video pointed out sadly.

While familiar with the Hero's Journey, I've never had the chance to take a class on since entering college it due my chosen major either. The closest I got to studying myth was Greco-Roman Classics class I took that allowed me more familiarity with works like the Iliad, Aeneid, the Argonautika etc.

In Bloodborne terms, I would wager that you have the most insight out of all us atm I guess. :p

I do plan to line my brain with eyes more though and finally read Lovecraft this summer, which is why I recently ordered a copy of the Necronomicon. It's about time I face the eldritch truth. xD

I have done many times at my grandparent's church so its hard to forget the hand placement and the importance of the heart. The only thing BB didn't due was the 'Sign of the Cross' but I guess that would be too on the nose. Japanese media is particularity bad with Christianity and Catholicism, maybe bad is a poor word, but they tend to portray it oddly. I assume its because no real equivalent exists besides Europe, but they tend to get the broad strokes right (ie the look) but the details off (anything else).

That's fair, one of my degrees is in Humanities so I was forced to take Anthro, it was interesting if a little poorly organized. The Hero's Journey importance is precisely because it trascends culture, it is not limited by Greco-Roman influences, it's suppose to be universal narrative structure. Besides Star Wars for example, Gilgamesh is another great example; but I see what you mean.

Actually at this moment I am putting on my cage, so I am ready for the Cosmos!

Lovecraft is very racist, even for his time. A few of his stories fall flat but the sheer oddity and creativity that he had, always leaves a soft spot for him in my heart. It was through Lovecraft I heard about BB, before I had almost no interest in SoulsBorne because the difficulty sounded like a gimmick and I played Dark Souls 2 first...lol.

Just letting you know, Lovecraft never wrote a Necronomicon. SO unless its a collection of his short stories, it might be by authors who continue to add to the mythos with their gimmicks.

Yeah, Christianity might as well be mythology to the Japanese. Case in point would be a line of dialogue from Demon's Souls wherein a character literally mentions the Virgin Mary in a line of dialogue that was so lore breaking (it pulled me out of the game when I heard it) that it was later removed in a patch. Without the reaction of the NA players, the Japanese didn't find anything odd with having a fourth wall breaking part of the lore like that, which initially implied Christianity existed in the fantasy setting of the game (?) before it was removed. xD

Well, good luck with that. Hopefully Kos - (or some say Kosm ;p), will grant you eyes as she once did for the vacuous Rom.

Also, I was aware of Lovecraft's less than cosmopolitan views, but I'm of the belief that it's best remove the personal life of artist from their work when (plus it's not right to retroactively judge a historical figure by modern standards), so I never really minded. Also, when I referenced the Necronomicon, I meant a compilation of Lovecraft's original works in a more convenient and unified text, rather than some fan fiction later writers might add.

Anyway, I'll have my IC post up tomorrow after I figure where a young Choir Cleric would fit into things. ;)

Anyway, I'll have my IC post up tomorrow after I figure where a young Choir Cleric would fit into things. ;)

What was the context for the Virgin Mary?

Oops, I just skewered my eyes instead.

While I agree with you partially, the reason why I mention his racism was because his racism was much greater than the time he was born in. He would seem old-fashioned for much of his constituents, were white ended once you got out of place not ending in -England. So the context will make less sense for a 21st century reader.

Cool. I tried to include the three locations open to all, but still having a preference in mind for all.

It was in reference to the Maiden Astrea. Skip to 3:21 in this video for that particular line of dialogue about the Virgin Mary.

I do know Lovecraft felt alienated in the era he lived in from a documentary I watched, which did portray his views to have been a bit more pronounced in their xenophobia even beyond the norm at the time. It was kinda ironic that he married a Jewish woman despite his anti-Semitic and racist viewpoints though. If I recall, while having an adverse reaction to living in multicultural New York initially for quite a while, he did seem to ease up a bit later on based on what I saw from that documentary.
National Factbook: History, Economy, Military etc.
(Significantly inspired by Zeon from Gundam.)

Wow's that hilarious.

That's true, the rise of Nazi Germany had a profound effect on his views, especially after he married his wife. I just clarified because most of his books were written before this.
