All the news agencies had been told was that there was going to be a press conference on the ongoing war in Khataiy, many of the reporters assumed that it would be about the recent torpedoing of a Syrian ship and thus were not very excited as all the details about the attack (including the losses) had been revealed the day before and thoroughly reported on. The press conference began at 12:00 PM with the press secretary stepped out and said "ladies and gentleman, The President of Grater Tovakia!" In unison, everyone in the room stood up the look of shock evident on all of their faces. The President stepped up to the pressroom podium and chuckled at the look on all the reporter's faces, he then said "please sit" and then he began to read off the teleprompter in front of him. "After close to a week of negotiating the government of South Africa has allowed for a peace summit to occur on its territory between the Government of Khaitaiy, The Government of Syria and the leadership of the KDF. While a date has not yet been made, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has sent inquiries to all parties to see if the summit can occur. I along with the Minister of Foreign Affairs will be present representing Grater Tovakian Interests, I truly hope that the process of creating lasting peace in Khataiy can be started at this summit and I pray that all sides accept the invitation. Thank you that will be all." and with that, the President stepped down from the podium and exited the room which was now buzzing with activity as the reporters tried to get back to their agencies.

FCS Freudenberger , Off the coast of Kurk Murzban

"Admiral Delacroix!" Commodore François Fabron was still stationed on the destroyer, when suddenly he called for an emergency call with the admiral in question, "Ma'am, the Mervay ships are violating the blockade and are launching missiles toward multiple forces, do we have permission to respond appropriately?"

Delacroix folded her arms and looked around in her room, accompanied by several councilors of the High Council. Finally, she started moving closer to the camera,
"You have permission to fire warning shots onto the vessels, if they do not comply, engage all forces. Multiple air superiority and multi-role fighters are currently ready at your disposal. We are currently mobilizing the 65th Mediterranean fleet from France, ETA in three hours."

"Yes, ma'am," he turns to his officers and crew on board the bridge, "Order them to cease all launches or we will engage."

Then, as the admiral instructed, three warning shots were fired upon the Mervay ships, barely missing the ships. A message was transmitted towards the fleet:

The Commonwealth of Freilibre | Her Majesty's Royal Navy and Air Force Fleet

We advise you to respect the sovereign land's wishes of Turkey's ongoing no-fly zone in order to limit both side's casualties. If more launches are detected, we will have no choice but to engage your fleet. There are ongoing missions in Kurk Murzban, and all belligerents that are not flying the Freilibre flag must be targeted. Our UN peacekeeping forces are withdrawing from this conflict, we advise your government to do the same.

While this was occurring, faint screeches of Freilibran fighters could be heard in the background, signifying that the air force was already prepared for such a thing to occur.

Kurk Murzban, Near city limits

The group of Gold, Black, and Grey squadrons of the JSOF regiment finally brought in good news: the teams were successful in their mission, and without a single casualty. It helped for the fact that they had acquired information about the city's streets and how to evade patrols from the hostage's guidance, but with them being executed, no one except the squadrons and a couple of the high officials in the Darkhall Building knew of their operation. Leaked footage from NC collaborators only hinted at the terrorists and backfired on the National Coalition. Nevertheless, there was still public outrage and speculations over who was really responsible for the chemical attacks.

As they waited for the Chinooks to finally carry them out, and declare a mission success, they were suddenly fired upon from the direction of the city.

A hailstorm of bullets whizzed by the soldiers, and injures several. Some knock down fragments and debris from the crippled sandstone-yellow building, flowing dust in and out of the rooms. It didn't help that all of the soldiers were adorning black and white, and were easily spotted out in the open. But they survived by hiding in the shadows, creating use for their clothing, and that's how they got out of this situation as well. Eventually, under the cover of darkness, the ambush stopped, and the team fired almost no shots back, since it would blow their cover if anyone else heard firearms of foreign origin being used. They manage to peek out, just in time to see multiple explosions far away, west of the city, indicating that it was mostly happening to UN troops. They curse, but they couldn't do anything to stop the bloodshed, since they were finally out of the war after weeks of preparation.

They knew that they couldn't stay in their outpost for much longer though. The LZ was changed to a secondary location, and after several tiring hours, they reach the spot. Once there, they eventually confronted a group of government soldiers, patrolling near the NC-controlled city. And instead of firing on them, unaware of JSOF's presence, the squadron went out of their hiding. Unexpectedly, they came out, and ceased fire to shake each other's hands, greeting them, and wishing them good luck and farewell. Since they were only minutes away from leaving, they had been given permission to signify Freilibre's peaceful agreements with Khataiy.

"Ladies and Gentlemen of the press," the spokesmen representative of the delegation in Qatar approached the hounds of press congregated at the resort's entrance, "It is with pleasure to announce that we're now working very closely with the Khataiy government, and are helping their forces rid the region of terrorists and civil resistors. In order to do so, Freilibre Armed Forces will be returning to the Turkish border. The UN Peacekeeping forces will remain there until another assembly convenes, but every other Freilibre soldier will be off Khataiy's territory in the coming weeks. And after these weeks of negotiation at this resort, it's clear that the government will let the National Coalition stay in Kurk Murzban and are attempting to work with multiple factions in order to create a cease fire. This will take time and effort, but under the guidance of Freilibre, we must make sure that the road to peace will be swift and will be bloodless."

The representative's speech was quite unclear and used lots of objective meaningless words to describe the decisions that would take place. When asked if Vraxuis is orchestrating an arms deal, he declined to comment.

Back inside, the representatives from Vraxuis shaked the President's hand.
"I'm glad you've put your thoughts into this meeting. Rest assured, those Freilibre troops will fall back into Turkish borders within the next couple of days," the taller one says in a joyful manner, "We'll make sure that arms shipments will be escorted by JSOF regiments and Vraxuis personnel. We'll make sure not to disturb the NC in Kurk Murzban as you said, to give them a false sense of security. We'll also make sure that that blockade stays indefinitely, with the exception of supplies that will be sent towards the capital."

The Prime Minister looks at the both at them, "Mr. President, I hope you know what you're doing. In any case, we'll be talking with the Syrian rebels and the KDF to push for an armistice, or a peace agreement. We'll get back to you shortly if they are willing to sign an agreement with you." The Prime Minister still had hopes in creating a bloodless peace treaty, but with all that was going on, Vraxuis's arms deal was the only likely scenario that would be tolerable to both Freilibre and Khataiy.

With that said, several civilian cargo aircraft were preparing flights in order to ship the modern equipment towards the capital, and another dozen freighters started their way, escorted by the 65th Mediterranean fleet, towards Khataiy. Under the cover of their company's logos, it would be unclear to the naked eye who they were being sent by.

Coasts of Kurt Murzban,Khataiy
The Freilibre ships were firing at the fleet however everyone knew that it were warning shots because of the sudden attack against Intifada Al-Islam and that the Hyuga and the Asagiri were entering to the city to evac the troops there. However the Radars of all vessel's were detecting that freilibran fighters were approaching their position. The situation was critical since the ships were now with the mission of evacuate all Mervay Peacekeeping forces in the city and the destroyers protecting the fleet launched missiles against the Yihadists over the city to support the evac.

Over the MRNS Monokuma
In the Carrier fighters were taking off to intercept the freilibran fighters in case of emergency. At least the 6 ASF-X Shinden from the Garuda Squadron took off and 6 Dassault Rafale of the 34th naval fighter squadron Wizard take off too. In the control room there was an conversation via satelite communication between the Captain Andersen,Captain Hataway and the Prime Minister who was informed of the situation.

"With all respects Captain Andersen the best thing we can do now is reply them and tell the why of what we are breaking the blockade" says the Prime Minister as he slips his cup of coffe.

"You are telling us that we should say that we were attacked by terrorists that support the Khataiy goverment like them, you saw very well the news related to that those guys knew about the lebanon attacks" says Andersen

"I saw the news related to that but if we want to retreat our troops there we are forced to do this... Look I know very well that and i don't support their methods and we all know well that sooner or later we were going to find ourselves in an clash of interests now the priority is take our troops out of Kurt Murzban and you and the rest of the fleet will retreat to Israel Waters for more security since it will be possible that after we made the arrest order against Khairallah many of it's allies will attack you" says the Prime Minister.

*Sighs* "Alright we will move to Tel Aviv once we have the Peacekeeping force out of there,Captain Hataway any objection???" asks Andersen

"No but just in case be ready for combat if the Freilibrans attack us and advice of our move to evac our forces,Hataway out" as the Captain Hataway ended communications the prime Minister was the last one to cut them and now Andersen needed to give the reason of why such sudden attack and moves.

"Attention all Freilibre Ships do not fire our ships we are violating the blockade because we are going to evac our peacekeeping forces in Kurt Murzban and the missile attack was an reprisal attack against the terrorist group Intifada Al-Islam we will leave Kurt Murzban and we will not return here but we ask why are you support Khairallah War crimes just we ask that in the name of curiosity and to know the why and nothing more"

‘Crashing This Plane’

International Waters, 150 km west of Suwadiya
01:35 AM, 22/06/18

The 7th Patrol Fleet surged on. A Fleet was a discomfiting presence on the ocean. All sleek grey objects, with low menace and knife prows. The prows of the 7th carved channels through the Med, leaving the sea churned in their wake. Above them swivelled the barrels of naval guns and bombardment cannon. Behind that was the racks of missile launchers, and above them was the banks of radar and sensors, the faint distortions emanating from smokestacks, and the thin protrusions of radio wires.

The ships were not alike. Some were long and narrow — the Regn Frigates. These were positioned out to the flanks, where they deployed Towed-Array Sonar (TAS) and Helicopters for ASW duties. The Regns were an older class. There electronics were more visible, the wires on the superstructure like knotted veins. Their radars were gauzy edifices, squat and curved. They spun constantly.

Captain Tafrik Iversen watched a Regn in the distance. The grey sliver bobbed up and down. The ship not tall, and the waters were quite rough. The Frigate had been built to earlier design principles, ones that had shared the reduced horizons of the Valaran Empire at the time. Those principles favoured patrol over dominance, because that was what the Empire did at the time. It was all it could do.

Tafrik was on a very different kind of ship. In Varanski Regn meant King, a kind of petty ruler that used to be scattered across Valaran. But the ship Tafrik was inside — this was the true monarch of the seas. It was a Varnaus, a Greatsword, and it cleaved through the waters. Where the Regn was low down and thin, the Varnaus was broad and tall. Where the Regn was exposed, the Varnaus was sleek and slab-like in the way stealth ships are. The Varnaus was technically a ‘Heavy Destroyer’ but really it was a Cruiser, built to the principles of a revived Empire. The 7th had two, and the one Tafrik stood on was the Air-Warfare Commander, of the formation. But it was not the flagship.

Tafrik moved away from the window. Behind him were banks of minters and their operators. The bridge was echoed with low hums and tapping at controls. Faces stared down at screens; gazes were hard and scrutinising. It was very quiet and very orderly to Tafrik, but there was an unmistakable pressure to the room.
People did not look up from the screens, to gaze at through the windows. Tafrik was unnerved by that, but perhaps it was the right impulse. The view of the sea outside was not calming.

He moved further inside, to a different room. The were more monitors and more stares. There was also a desk, over which was laid various charts, pressed to the surface by the forearms of a frowning man. Tafrik announced himself. “Admiral.”

Admiral Niels looked up. Niels had the craggy authority one would expect of a naval admiral. He was worn by the sea, and nursed her cunning. Tafrik had also found him to be unfailingly polite. “Ah, Captain.” He gestured at a seat. “Please.”

Tafrik looked up as he sat. “Did the orders come through?”

“They did. Discussions finally ended.”

“And?”

“Its still full of political wrangling. They don’t want a ground deployment. They don’t like the risk of casualties.”

Tafrik nodded. “That will piss Captain Diarmada off.” It will piss my unit off too.

“I imagine so. They also can’t spare any Carriers”. Tafrik nodded a second time. It was disappointing, but logical enough that Tafrik had expected it. The Valaran Empire had few CVNs to spare. Instead, it had long relied on surface combatants to perform all the functions of a fleet — ASUW, ASW and now AAW — around them was meant to be an all-encompassing field of death. At least they were equipped for the task. Each of the main surface combatants mounted the SMART-L, a black slab of a radar, installed at the top of a tower. The SMART-L conducted volume searches of up to 400 km. Although it was not a targeting radar — it could not track what it saw — this allowed the Fleet near unprecedented vision of the skies around it, and gave it ample ability to respond with its targeting arrays and ranks of missiles.

Niels looked over the map again. “But you know, I am happy with it.”

Tafrik knew why. It had been too fucking long, drifting in the ocean as Khataiy burned. “We finally do it.”

The Admiral smiled. “Finally.”

“Where do they want you to deploy?” Tafrik couldn’t quite bring himself to say us. Unless his men were on the ground, there was no us.

“There was some consideration of Kurt Murzban. Between Mervay and the Turks, the situation up there is strongly adverse. The latest reports also suggest that Mervay has expanded their fleet; its not pretty similar to the 7th in size, and they have enough serious AAW ships to make it difficult. But unless we were to pre-emptively strike at that force, it would be difficult to impose our objectives, and we’d only be fighting one faction, and not even the one we’re most opposed to.”

So this was the wrangling Niels meant. Tafrik was only a VRM captain, and so had not been present for the higher level discussions. But he knew of the complex situation of Khataiy, and the background to the conundrum facing the government.

The Valaran Empire had initially thought to support the Kurds. Oppressed without cause, and in this case eager and willing to fight back. The moral case was clear. Yet there had been complications. There were always complications. The diplomats of the Foreign Ministry would list them out, their faces lined with mock-concern. Aiding the Kurds would mean harming the government Khataiy. No one much liked the government of Khataiy, but it was useful. It kept the Turks at bay. Assad too, and his Iranian backers. Every missile launched in support of the Kurds was one that supported the SAA too, and the FSA, and the NC. Did the Minister in question want this? Of course they did not. How could this be explained to the public, either on the Parliament floor, with the dagger-thrust debates, or the steel glares of the select committees, or the too-sincere questions of journalists?

The Ministers raged and fumed at these objections. Even admitting their cause had geopolitical implications felt like drenching it in mud. But they would eventually acquiesce, their empty fire giving way to cold logic. In Valaran, it paid to be a pragmatist.

So, the Empire had watched as the war had begun, as nations like Mervay and Tovakia had waded into struggle and cast about. And it had gradually dawned on the Valarans that maybe they should not have waited, that holding back had costs too, that non-intervention was its own choice, and not a good one. So the diplomats with their frowns and trim suits came back to the Ministers. They came with fresh proposals, and this time they brought the Admirals of the VIN too. The Navy would end the dawdling.

“If not Murzban, the centre then? Iskenderun?”

“Also ruled out for now. Its a similar issue except not with Mervay but some other nation… Volcanu I think.” Niels frowned. “They’ve deployed Dreadnoughts, I understand.”

Tafrik’s face broke out into a chuckle. “I’m sorry, but Dreadnoughts? From World War Two? I, uh… wow.” This war really did have everything.

Niels didn’t laugh, but Tafrik though his eyes held mirth. “Yes. I understand they've been modernised, but quite, Captain. Volcanu appears to be on our side, as much as anyone can be, but intelligence on them has been sparse. In any case Iskenderun is not on the coast and thus difficult for us to control. Nor is it closer to the KDF, making it less useful for us.”

Niels looked down the map. He pointed south, below the bulge where Iskenderun was located. There was one city marked.

“We’ll be deploying to Suwadiya. The decision was not unanimous, but there was a clear majority in favour of resolving the situation there.” He looked up at Tafrik, and the Captain saw the concern line the Niels’ face. There was a hunger for war, yes, but the Admiral had seen too much for that to be his only emotion. “I have instructed the Fleet to increase speed to seventeen knots. That gives you eight hours to brief your men, and prepare.”

OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE OF THE VALARAN EMPIRE
OFFICE OF THE FOREIGN MINISTER
Origin: The Valaran Empire
Recipients: General Broadcast
Subject: Imposition of a Military Exclusion Zone around Suwadiya
Encryption Level: None
Importance: High

To all involved Parties,

The Valaran Empire has watched with mounting concern at the situation in Khataiy. It has observed the many failures of the government of Khataiy, most heinously their barbarous cleansing of Kurdish villages. It urges the government to see sense, and for all parties to acquiesce to talks.

The Valaran Empire also notes the illegal attacks on Khataiyan territory, by the SAA, Hezbollah, Daesh and their supporters, and in particular the unprovoked assault on the city of Suwadiya. This has lead to a humanitarian crisis of disastrous proportions, caused by the incessant bombardment of urban areas. The naval blockade has also disrupted international shipping, and the flow of much needed aid and humanitarian supplies to the region.

This cannot be allowed to stand, and yet such actions have been ignored by the international community, and even facilitated by some nations who now deploy troops into Khataiy. This dereliction of international responsibility and of basic human decency has forced the Valaran Empire to act alone. So be it.

We will be imposing a unilateral exclusion zone of 37 nautical miles around Suwadiya. This exclusion zone is both aerial and naval — it prohibits all military vessels and aircraft from entering it, under threat of destruction. Nations with military vessels or aircraft present in this zone have 24 hours to remove their forces from this exclusion zone. After this time has lapsed, any remaining units will be treated as violators, and may be destroyed. Humanitarian vessels are allowed in this zone, but must broadcast their location at all times. They may also be subject to boarding and inspection by Valaran vessels. Resistance to this is not advised.

This Exclusion Zone has a simple purpose: to restore Parties to their senses. In the absence of fighting, the Valaran will advise negotiations, the proper respect of national borders, and the protection of civilians. If these conditions are not met, the Government of Prime Minister William Hesseren, under authority of his Imperial Majesty Edric III Skaran will permit the use of additional measures to ensure a cessation of hostilities, and the resumption of peace, stability and prosperity.

Sincerely,

Diplomat Helen Tarengard,
The Valaran Imperial State

Khataiyi soldier surveying the battlefield

Waseem's army had made several gains in recent days but that momentum was coming to a halt as the Khataiyi military was able to successfully repel an assault on a portion of the country's largest highway that ran from Turkey to Syria, this highway is essential to Khataiy's economy being a major route for truckers between the Middle East and Europe. The Khataiyi military used Konkurs ATGMs and SPG-9s to destroy vehicles operated by Pro-Waseem forces, most of which were lightly armored or slightly modified civilian vehicles, while helicopters provided CAS and DShK positions set up gunned down Waseem's fighters exposed, the military's success was the first successful defense in weeks on both the Southern and Northern fronts, though this was one victory out of many this helped boost some morale among the soldiers in the north. While the Khataiyi military won in its defense of a crucial interchange on the highway and surrounding rural areas, as Waseem's men fell back they suffered from an a series of hit and run attacks from Intifada al-Islam and ISIS cells killing several of Waseem's fighters.

After the meeting with Freilibre and everyrhing was said and done, Khairallah decided to publically address recent developments in his country as well as the involved parties,

"Good evening, I am pleased to announce the success of our confrence with the delegation from Freilibre, and I send my upmost gratitude and thankfulness to your country for being open and respectful of our interests and people. I have also been contacted by our partner Greater Tokavia about potential negotiations between the Arab State of Khataiy, The Khataiy Democratic Forces, as well as the Syrian Government, and let me say they are not the only nation interested in having us talk with Damascus. I say to this, this is not possible or in our best interests. Of course critics and the malicious propaganda ministries of Tehran, Baghdad, Syria and Moscow will come around to label me a war monger and a bigot but the reality is the Syrian regime is not trustworthy. Assad betrays his own people on a daily basis what should stop him from betraying us? For years his country has tried to undermine ours, we spent billions of Dinars in constructing border defenses, our regional partners like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Jordan can attest to this as they helped us with our border defenses and now Assad has finally taken advantage of our country's darkest hour to invade our nation for Iranian interests and collaboration with terrorist organizations, no I will not tolerate diplomacy with the Assad regime or his allies and we will continue to fight his forces until we have the upper hand."

Aftermath of a Khataiyi airstrike in Abu Kamal

The Khataiyi government carried out another round of airstrikes across Iraq and Syria specifically targeting Iranian sponsored groups like Hezbollah and the Popular Mobilization Forces as well Kurdish groups, specifically being the YPG and PKK affiliates. The areas selected were areas with high activity with these groups such as Abu Kamal where a large amount of Iraqi Militiamen as well as Hezbollah and the IRGC had gathered together after recently fighting ISIS in the border city of Abu Kamal, the airstrikes on the Shia militia was done in coordination with the Israelis whom are concerned about Iranian influence in Syria as much as the Khataiyi Government is, the next airstrike also struck YPG fighters along the border of Iraq where they had also recently fought ISIS with Iraqi assistance this level of cooperation between Shia militias and leftist Kurdish Nationalists was something the Khataiyi government would not tolerate and thus struck multiple positions along the Iraqi-Syrian border, after hitting the Kurds in Syria and Iraqi militiamen the next airstrikes hit Sinjar where there is a large presence of PKK affiliated leftist Kurdish nationalists closely associated with Rojava, who in turn was funding KDF in Khataiy that has similar motives to the branches of the PKK in Iraq and Syria. The airstrikes hit weapons stockpiles and camps, the final airstrikes hit Syrian, Iranian and Hezbollah positions in Daraa where the Syrian military was fighting a large and controversial offensive against rebel groups in the South backed by many western nations including the United States as well Arab nations like Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Khataiy as well, President Khairallah even alerted the Pentagon of the planned airstrikes in Daraa as well as the airstrikes in Abu Kamal that was coordinated with Israel, however the airstrikes on the Kurdish positions in the north definitely caused some friction with Washington.

Pro-Government foreign fighters calling for more to come

The Government wasn't very open about recruiting former Jihadists from other countries like Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan who sought refuge in Khataiy to avoid prosecution in their home countries, but for those who knew, knew the handsome rewards Khataiy offered for their services to the country and as more and more Islamic personalities and clerics began labeling the war in Khataiy Jihad the Government came up with the idea of publicisizng the foreign fighters and openly recruiting seeing the success it brought in Bosnia in 1992, Chechnya in 1993, Afghanistan in the 70s and 80s and the various factions in Syria including ISIS, Assad and Rojava, as well as even in Ukraine in 2014. Thus all the foreign fighters that were recruited in Khataiy that were integrated into Kataib al-Fedayeen the nation's largest and arguably most brutal paramilitary group, were organized into a new sub-unit of the Fedayeen called "the Special International Mujahideen Regiment" composed of exclusively foreign fighters most of whom were veterans, and they were clearly already fighting for government some even wearing government issued uniforms, but that didn't matter, this was an excellent opportunity to reach out to religious Muslims around the world to fight on behalf of Khataiy, the Government even had them film themselves encouraging foreign fighters to come and disseminated the footage unofficially through social media giving the unit almost total autonomy in how it functioned so the Government could distance itself from them if need be.

"In the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful, we are the Muhajireen (immigrants) of Khataiy the situation here is very different than what the media portrays, President Khairallah has spared us and saved us from potential capture or danger at the hands of the disbelievers he has extended his arms in helping the Muslims around the world like in Iraq and Syria and this is why the Magians Safavids hate him, and I do not need to explain how twisted and corrupt the media is Khairallah isn't the enemy or the aggressor here he is defending his nation and people like the way Islam commands an Emir to do, I saw a few scholars saying this is a legitimate Jihad and these are the ones who are afraid to use that word because it angers the Americans and Jews but it's a clear sign that even if the palace scholars who avoid Jihad as much as possible are calling for Jihad, this is Jihad everyone agrees so come oh brothers the Government will provide for you, Allah has blessed us with a sincere righteous Emir to fight for against the Safavids, Atheists, and Hypocrites.

Thank God that most of the nation is safe but as these various forces advance so does their tyranny and we musn't allow Khataiy to be next for their butchery and slaughter come before its too late, come and respond to the calls of your brothers come and fight for the sake of Allah and don't be afraid to die martyrdom is the best of deaths.

Allahu Akbar!"

As he proclaimed Allahu Akbar the rest of the men chanted after him pointing their guns in the air and as the camera zoomed out and focused on a Khataiyi flag waving next to a white flag with "No God but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of God" written on it with a Nasheed in the background.

14:30 | 21st June, 2018
FCS Freudenberger, Off the coast of Kurk Murzban

As the Mervayan's message was received from the bridge, the squadron of fighters were told to be prepared for engagements. It was a sunny, crisp day outside; the sun glistened against the blue sea below, and the skies were baby blue, with small streaks of white clouds, stretching across the horizon. The Commodore took in every single second of the sea's tranquility and serenity, only to be disturbed just a few moments later. One of his officers stood with him outside the bridge's canopy. Commodore François detested the entire reason Freilibre was involved in foreign affairs, and held resentments against the government. He was a good citizen like any, and followed orders without hesitation, but deep down he felt every death, every decision, every result, weighing him down. Both his mental and physical health was slowly deteriorating, and he knew the next few tours would be his last.

"Commodore François," his officer finally remarks, "They've relayed back a response. Claiming that they're evacuating their peacekeeping forces away from Kurk Murzban."

He glances at him, but barely makes eye contact, "And what does the High Council say?"

"They say 'let them, if they try and do anything funny we'll have to blow them to smithereens'"

"The Admiral said that?"

"Uh, haha," he chuckles awkwardly, "Just paraphrasing, sir. I believe that's what she was thinking though."

The Commodore turns back from his gaze, and recuperates his thoughts. "Yes, let's get to it then."

Back on the bridge, he converses with his crew. After several minutes, they respond back to the ships' inquiries:

The Commonwealth of Freilibre | Her Majesty's Royal Navy and Air Force Fleet

You may very well evacuate peacekeeping troops and use any defensive measurement against possible resistance along the way. But we suggest retaining any further actions that might be regrettable in the future. In the name of national security, unfortunately, we cannot disclose any information pertaining to the interests of Her Majesty's honourable thirty-fourth federal administration or Her Majesty's Commonwealth.

FCS Fuhrmann, Off the coast of Kurk Murzban

FCS Fuhrmann is a Ferdinand-Class SIGINT Ship, centred in the middle of the 77th Mediterranean fleet and was escorted by the FCS Freudenberger and FCS Roeland. The enitre fleet was comparatively smaller than the other fleet of Freilibre's Mediterranean presence, but it still held a large information advantage over the rest of the combatants in the area. It was responsible for monitoring both enemy and friendly communications throughout Khataiy's coast, as part of an ongoing reconnaissance mission and the secretive Operation Cease and Desist.

A tall, wrinkled man, a bit older but more battle-worn than the Commodore in the destroyer, was briskly walking around the ship's corridors.
"Captain. Admiral Delacroix is on the line." another officer, similar to that of the Commodore's interrupted, "She said it's fairly interesting and urgent. We'd set up a conference with the Commodore on FCS Freudenberger with her as well."

"Admiral Delacroix? That fierce cat, never wanted anything else but success." he mumbled, looking down collectively with the officer, and announced under breath, "Right, let's go."

In the bridge, the captain relaxed on his seat, and picked up the phone.

"Captain Hersch." the Admiral's silky voice almost made the experienced vet forget that she served years more than him, "So glad to have reached you along with the Commodore. The Commodore and I are in a video call, would you like to join?" she asked sarcastically. A video conference was eventually started.

"Admiral, you don't need to do all of this, please. All of this drama needs to be forgotten," the captain sighed, "Right. What's the situation?"

She begins, "According to recent intelligence reports from the FCS Fuhrmann, there's still lots of conflicting sides that Freilibre's not interested in partaking. Also, the 66th Mediterranean fleet is pulling out of the conflict. High Council says they're needed for another conflict in the Atlantic."

"That doesn't make sense, they've just started their way here, now they're--"

"--they're still in France, captain. The closest they got was Corsica. But, we managed to persuade High Council to continue this operation as planned. The 17th fleet will arrive, in place of the 66th. ETA ten hours."

"The seventeenth? Isn't that Freilibre's biggest and most advanced fleet? ...And the most costly?"

"No more quips Captain Hersch. Freilibre wants this going smoothly from now on and will not tolerate any more leaks or failures."

"Admiral, with all due respect, it was not our fault that video evidence leaked, nor was it those documents."

She suddenly ended the call, and left both the captain and commodore more questions than they had before. Currently, the 17th fleet comprises of almost a dozen destroyers and had two aircraft carriers, along with several other ships of foreign origin. They were never really used in combat before, and was only a bargaining chip to put pressure against enemy belligerents. In the Second Indo-Freilibre war, the 17th fleet was famously used as a sort of threat towards any civil resistance against the uprising. It was always continually updated and refitted, and was only used in major conflicts that Freilibre had participated in.

PRESS RELEASE

05/24/2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Adélaïde, FACD; The Darkhall Building — The administrative of the Armed Forces of Freilibre, the Freilibre Administration for Commonwealth Defence, has issued a statement during the press conference of 24th of June regarding the current status of the 77th Mediterranean and 17th Atlantic Fleet.

The Freilibre Administration for Commonwealth Defence Director Keith Herrington:

"Freilibre will continue its involvement in Khataiy regardless of disagreements coming from the media and from the citizenry. The government stands in solidarity against terror threats. Currently, the situation in the Mediterranean and the new Turkish border is under control, but the government still seems to struggle with containing its own conflict. UN Peacekeeping border patrols are still in place west of Kurk Murzban and will not cease operations until final agreements are made. We will not cooperate with the National Coalition, and we implore the UN and other nations not to do so either.

After the recent conference in Doha, Khataiy and Freilibre has agreed on new deals that will strengthen its national defense and will ultimately prove useful in the fight against radical terrorism. We are also working with many diplomats from Turkey and Russia, including the Russian Ambassador here in Adélaïde, for a resolution in this war. What we did was concerning for the Russian Ambassador but the FACD believes it was justifiable in its cause.

Finally, the FACD would like to make it perfectly clear that there are two sides in the civil war. Freilibre is currently still torn on either side."

Press correspondent: "So will the Director admit that this operation was carried out with Turkish and Russian support?"

"Um, no because that is false. Operation Cease and Desist was about establishing a compromise with Russia and Khataiy, but discussing any of that would threaten national security for both nations as well as Freilibre and the Commonwealth. It is true that throughout history we have had strong ties with Russia compared to our fellow EU members, but that does not mean it is influenced by it. An obvious example is the Prime Minister's approval of the recent 1 billion Euro arms deal with Khataiy. I'm hearing it was tenatively approved by the Russian Ambassador, but he still shares his concerns with us."

Press correspondent: "As you know, the situation is incredibly complicated. But, is Freilibre siding with the government, which is supported by western nations, or with the Syrians, supported by the likes of countries such as Russia? We know Freilibre is at the crossroads."

"Again, yes it is extremely complicated, and it will most likely not be resolved any time in the near future. What can be done will be done, and what can't be done won't be done. We have deployed the 17th Atlantic fleet only to inflict pressure, not for actual combat use. The Russian diplomatic meeting had stressed about this, and we felt compelled to agree."

Press correspondent: "What is the situation off the coast of Kurk Murzban and the 77th Mediterranean fleet?"

"There is currently no word coming from the 77th fleet that I am able to comment on right now. There appears to be some miscommunication with another fleet, but that is of no concern. Mainly other national security interests that I'm not obliged to share with."

Press correspondent: "Back to Russia, is there an update on the recent announcements that Freilibre will be welcoming a massive Russian diplomatic mission?"

"No further updates, I'm afraid. The meeting will be held on the 30th between President Putin and Prime Minister Ursula, along with several Russian generals and Freilibre's High Council. There's currently no further detail, but expect more announcements. But I must remind you that Freilibre is continuing its arms deal with Khataiy even if President Putin says his disagreements otherwise."

The Director answered more questions following the statement. A full documentation and the full press release can be found at the Freilibre Armed Forces website.

Huntpublican Capital Estate:
In the Main Office Room

"Sir, we need to do something about the Syrians!" exclaims on of Umbaku's advisors. A debate on what to do regarding recent events with the leader of Khataiy, Khairallah, and his message to the world.

"Well, I think we need to just stay out of it..." responds another advisor, "We are on the other side of the planet! This is not a serious problem for us,"

"But what about Khataiy? We've poured enough money into trying to help the KDF, we have a naval strike-squadron in the Mediterranean Sea, for Petes-sake!" says the first advisor, trying to attack the counter-argument

"Okay? We can just pull out the ships. And just ignore the entire situation. It's not like we have valuable assets in the country, heck! I don't even think our population is for fighting in the region!" stands up the second advisor

"Calm down," says Umbaku II, "I believe we do have a duty to defend Khataiy, we all want Khataiy to have a democracy, right? I mean we support the Khataiyan Democratic Forces," says Umbaku II, putting an emphasis on 'democratic'.

"I don't know, maybe we don't need to have a Democracy in Khataiy," responds the anti-conflict advisor, "We aren't a democracy, why should they be one?"

"Look, we can't just abandon the faction that we've been supporting for so long," says Umbaku II, "I'm going to keep our nation in this, the United States supported the Syrian Democratic Forces, and they've relatively successful with them, so that's what we are going to do," thus ending the debate, for now.

USS Warrior, in the Mediterranean Sea

Orders from the Capital Estate says to prepare for more airstrikes, but not on Khataiy, but to only defend Khataiyan Forces from any Syrian military convoys.

Excerpt from an Official Message from Umbaku II on International Television

"...Huntpublic will support the Khataiyan Government in their war against Syria, currently, Huntpublic will only attack any Syrian military convoys that are fighting Khataiyan Forces, we will not attack any civilians or civilian structures that are not of military importance to Syria. That message was to Khataiy and a message to Assad. We are now going to engage in conflict with you, this might be a declaration of war or not. It depends on what you do now. Basically, this war will go on until Syria falters or withdraws their forces. And with Huntpublic behind Khataiy, it seems like fighting out this war would not be an intelligent decision. I guess what I'm asking is surrender before it is too late..."
HUNTPUBLIC TIMES: The Huntpublican Military has joined the NATO planned Trident Juncture 2018, it's Amphibious Assault Forces will be working closely with U.S. Marines in a simulated naval invasion of Norway,

The 135 warriors that were sitting in the low lit briefing theater were SRS commandos that were going to fight. They were going to war. And so they were going to hear about what was going on. Here they would get things done.

Data on the situation showed on the screen before them. SIS support, a deep black operation, the SRS had been deployed against MNPLA-ULF terrorism and against anarchists. Now they would be goin abroad and fulfilling the foreign internal defense role that came with being a Santiago Nation. When the briefing was concluded the man in charge asked.
“Any Questions?”

Seeing that there were none he dismissed the task force to further briefings and they moved out. Heading to the barracks for the change of clothes. They would not go as Mcnernians, they would go as Mercinaries.

‘The Tyranny of Deliberation’

International Waters, 51 km west of Suwadiya
07:35 AM, 25/06/18

The 7th had arrived onto the scene in the early afternoon of the 22nd. This was some 18 hours before the Valaran deadline had passed but Niels had wanted to secure the area in advance. The Fleet positioned itself 51 km from Suwadiya, and assumed a combat formation.

To the north and south, curving slightly around the exclusion zone were the ASW guards. Each consisted of a Regn Frigate, a hulking Scaeva Destroyer, and a Aevar Nuclear-Attack Submarine. Towed-array sonar was deployed into the water, as were sonobuoys from ASW helicopters, and hull-mounted equipment was switched to passive searches. The ships kept steady at 8-10 knots.

Between the flank guards was the 7th’s core. The Varnaus Heavy Destroyers anchored the fleet. Working in concert, they provided extended AAW, with one focused on high-altitude searches and the other on horizon sweeps. They were backed up by two more Scaevas, and these four ships formed the points of a square. Inside the square was the 7th’s support vessels: the lone Karvas LPH, two replenishment vessels, and two Karakol Frigates. The Karakols were dual role ships, able to house a small number of soldiers and vehicles, as well as mounting the air-defence and ASW equipment found on other surface combatants. Captain Tafrik’s men were ensconced on the Karvas, but Diarmada’s Special Forces were solely on the Karakols.

There were two final squadrons of note. If the ASW squadrons were located to the north and south of the 7th’s core, these squadrons were east and west. Each consisted of a Miadar Frigate, a Sarakir Destroyer, and, loosely, another Aevar Submarine. The Sarakir was in many ways a modernised, lighter version of the Scaeva, built on the cheap by leveraging existing equipment. The Miadar was something of a replacement for the older Regn, though much larger, and equally suited to AAW as to ASW. These squadrons thus were more equipped to do either, and so acted as forward surveillance across and under the ocean waters.

The 7th was now in in EMCON conditions. The only active radars were LPI (Low Probability of Intercept); everything else was limited to passive scans and minimised footprints. The Fleet had a total of fifteen L-Band volume search radars; of these two were LW-09, a full eleven were SMART-L, and the two on the Varnaus were SMART-L-EWC, better suited for the tracking of ballistic missiles. The total VLS count was 1,324 cells, though this did not account for missile based CIWS, quad-packed cells and that some of the VLS were not actually equipped with anything (modern missiles were expensive and slow to build, and the 7th was a minor fleet). The number also did not include the racks of Survard ASCMs, which amounted to a further 176. The Survard was large and expensive in its own right, but experience taught the Valarans to always keep these launchers full. Of these missiles, approximately sixty-five percent were equipped on just six ships — the Scaevas and the Varnaus’.

The sky was pale, deceptive calm of the Mediterranean, but the sea seemed disturbed to Tafrik. There was no lull to it, just ruptured water. He was not facing the sea now. Instead there was the towering form of Captain Diarmada. The Special Forces Captain was built like one might imagine: tall, broad and commanding. Diarmada seemed to have Varanski stock as well, for they were taller and broader than most Valarans. But the Varanski had pale blond or red hair; Diarmada’s was a fibrous brown, combed back from angular facial features.

Next to Diarmada was Niels. Niels was thin and somewhat below average at height — at least he was shorter than Tafrik, who considered himself average. Tafrik could not imagine to be anything other than he was: a patrician bearing, slightly aged. man who encouraged respect, who always seemed in possession of learned experience.

Niels continued to speak. “If Assad’s troops don’t withdraw, I have been instructed to make a demonstration. East Squadron will make a cruise missile strike on the Syrian advance. Finding targets has been difficult — we only have satellite and intelligence info — but the clashes have forced them to make their units known. Strike will be aimed at the rear elements, but the possibility of hitting Khataiyi forces is not minimal.”

“Won’t this aid Khairallah?”

Niels was blunt. “Yes. This is acceptable to me, for several reasons. It is the SAA in violation of Khataiya’s borders and this act is now the main obstacle to talks. The strikes are also unlikely to affect he situation with the KDF, since the Khataiyi are on the backfoot, and will likely remain overstretched. But I would be interested in both your thoughts.”

Tafrik chewed his lip. Niels’ points made sense, and were clearly rehearsed. This was an indication of reality of this war: unless it wanted to hold its nose, Valaran had few genuine partners on the coast. With a different administration, Tafrik suspected that the Empire might have even been aiding Khairallah directly. It was still difficult to get his head around the new way of doing things — the normative approach of Prime Minister Hesseren.

“I assume this strike is also intended to give us leverage. At the talks.” Diarmada had spoken. He had a low gruff accent; Tafrik couldn’t place it.

Niels gave a half-nod. “This is probably correct, but it was not made explicit to me, so I can’t issue it as a guideline.”

“Would they have made explicit, if they wanted it to be a reason?” Tafrik ventured. He frowned as he did so — as a captain, Tafrik hadn’t needed to deal with this kind of political subtlety. Military would say what they want done. Clarity was the whole goddamn point.

Niels made a grimace. “Ehh…”

“Sometimes,” Dimarda intruded. “Other times they want you to judge it for yourself.”

“And your judgement would be… yes?”

“My judgement is that we want peace, and that increased Valaran influence at the talks increases the chances of peace.” And I thought Niels was blunt. Diamarda went on. “If this is our goal, this changes the calculus of the strikes. We have to prove that we’re a threat, which means hammering Assad’s forces with overwhelming firepower. You can’t do that on chickenshit, I mean, you can’t do that on the time-delayed incomplete info you’re getting from whatever intelligence agent Flint has holed up in Damascus. You don’t have planes and helis are too vulnerable. So deploy my teams. I’ve seen the maps. The upper slopes of Jebel Aqra are an easy vantage point. We can deploy there and point out targets below.”

Niels shook his head “High Command still won’t allow a ground deployment. Any unit on Jebel Aqra could be isolated. It would be difficult to provide air-cover or extraction as well, and even if we could, it would mean exposing ships or helis to enemy strikes.” Niels paused. He looked tired. “I understand the lack of ground spotters ties a hand behind our back, but the intel I’ve seen is good enough to give Assad a bloody nose.”

“With respect, this isn’t being tied with one hand behind your back. This is having your hands amputated. Assad may think he can weather a few inaccurate strikes. Its why the Transeurasian bombing hasn’t done jack. If we want to get better results than that, you will need better intel. If he is getting hammered with pinpoint accuracy, he’ll get the message really quickly.”

“I am not requesting a ground deployment at this time.” Niels replied with the firmness that meant an order.

Diarmada nodded and stayed silent. Tafrik understood the Captain’s chafing. As a fellow ground forces man, nothing the Navy did made any sense. This command room felt impossibly far from the fighting. There was just too much between them and what was happening. Ground Forces couldn’t decided away from the fight. They needed to be in it to understand what happening, not clapped in political constraints and time delays in air-conditions boxes 50km from the coast. But Tafrik was a Marine. He would never fully understand how the Navy operated, but he was at least used to the experience. Special Forces like Diamarda operated more on their own wits, in Rathran desert and Ophirc jungles. He was much less used to this.

“Any other views?” Niels looked at Tafrik.

“Not really. This seems imperfect but logical enough, in the circumstances.” Tafrik did have another concern, but he didn’t voice it. There was a sense that the Valarans, even Niels, were sick of inaction, that wanted to do something, do anything to the situation.

It was hard to voice this kind of concern. Military men were about action, not inaction. There was always something to be done that was not done. It was rarely the other way around.

Niels nodded. “Right then. There will be a further situate update at 09:00; otherwise I will inform you when the strikes take place 30 minutes prior. Thank you both.”

The two men left in silence. Tafrik found himself wondering about Diamarda’s points on the way out. Maybe we are too risk-averse. It certainly seemed hard to enforce a normative foreign policy without getting your hands a little bloodstained, even if that was the blood of Valarans.

To all involved Parties,

The Valaran Empire commends the calls for talks and should they go ahead, will accept the invitation. The nations of Freilibre, Tovakia and the Khataiyan government deserve praise for their willingness to support peace over violence. This is a welcome sign of progress, and should be supported by all Parties to the conflict.

Sadly, it is not. The forces of the Syrian Arab Army and their allies continue to occupy upon Khataiyan territory. This is not only a flagrant violation of Khataiya’s national sovereignty, but also an impediment to peace talks.

Unless these forces begin to withdraw or the Syrian Government responds with this, the Valaran Empire will take necessary measures to ensure compliance. This is the only warning Assad and his administration will receive.

However, deescalation is not a one-way street. The Valaran Empire also urges the Khataiyan government to cease its military strikes on other nations. These do nothing to further peace, and cause unnecessary civilian casualties. They should be halted, as a sign of good faith.

Finally, the Suwadiyan Air-Sea Exclusion zone will remain in place during any period of negotiations. This will help ensure that talks are not disrupted by deliberate provocations.

Sincerely,

Diplomat Helen Tarengard,
The Valaran Imperial State

Bahraini Shias Protest Against Khataiy

The fallout from Khataiy's aggressive stance regarding Assad, Hezbollah and Iran caused outrage among many Shias in the region, especially in Gulf Nations like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar with sizeable Shia minorities, Bahrain saw the worst of the anti-Khataiy protests where police and protests got into violent confrontations outside the Khataiyi embassy. Protestors began throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at the embassy, while others burned the flag of Khataiy and portraits of Khairallah, Bahraini police used water cannons and tear gas to push the protestors away from the embassy, which caused the protests to begin rioting, Khataiyi security at the embassy evacuated the ambassador and the embassy' staff via helicopter to the airport where they were later flown to Saudi Arabia where it was determined to be safer.

The Khataiyi Embassy in Doha

Khairallah was sitting the embassy's conference room with the Revolutionary Command Council discussing steps to take with the conflict becoming more intense and drawing in more regional involvement, such as the attack on the embassy in Bahrain. Khairallah was wearing a tan suit, brown dress shoes, and a black polo shirt underneath his tan dress coat as well as a pin with the Khataiyi flag. He was slightly hunched with his hands interlocked on the table looking at his advisors and staff, while a cigar hung from his mouth. The foreign minister spoke, "We to respond to Iran somehow." Khairallah shook his head agreeing, then looked over at the head of the Mukhabarat and Foreign Intelligence, then signaled for him to say something, "What was done in Bahrain was done by Iranian aggressors among the people, perhaps we could emulate it on their end." Khairallah took the cigar out of his mouth and set it lightly in the ashtray and took a sip of Arabic coffee from a small white cup with gold embroidered designs on it, then spoke "I've been thinking the same thing, but that won't be enough those Iranian agitators and paid protestors and crisis actors only make things look big, but I want to make things big for real, Iran needs to pay for their invasion and their attempts to harm our nation in anyway they can. I'm tired of them being one step ahead of us all the time." He leaned back in the chair and put his cigar back on his mouth, the Foreign Minister asked "What are thinking?" and Khairallah responded "Pakistan" he said so simply the head of the Mukhabarat and Foreign Intelligence said, "That's not a bad idea, are you suggesting we have some group attack Iran from Pakistan?" Khairallah responded, "That's exactly what I am thinking, Iran and Pakistan share a large border, and I think reaching out to our friends in Iraq might be a bit difficult to stage an attack, and forget Turkey the only groups there that would fight Iran would be Kurds and the last thing we need is more armed Kurds. Iran and Pakistan are ripe for our interests." The Head of the Mukhabarat and Foreign Intelligence responded, "There's a lot of groups in Pakistan willing to fight Iran, you have the Taliban, Daesh, Balochistani Nationalists, Balochistani Islamists and so on." Khairallah after taking a puff from his cigar said, "I think we should support the Balochistanis in their fight independence by staging an insurgency in Pakistan, the insurgency from Iran is small and the Iranian government has thwarted a lot of attempts for an open conflict, but Pakistan is weak and unstable, I think it would serve us well to reach out to the Pakistani Taliban and Balochistani groups in Iran and Pakistan, the Taliban will keep the Pakistanis busy while our Balochi friends raise hell along the border and move the conflict from Pakistan into Iran, it won't be easy or start overnight but the sooner the better."

The head of the Mukhabarat and Foreign intelligence responded, "There's plenty of groups active in Iran as well, are you sure you don't want us to just keep it in Iran?" President Khairallah replied, "No it needs to be dynamic and look natural, besides I never liked the Pakistanis anyway." Then he turned his head towards the foreign minister, "I want you to go to Pakistan and start a humanitarian campaign, that's when we will connect with our groups of interest, but while your there make sure you actually help people too it will work out for all of us in the end." The foreign minister replied, "Yes sir." Then Khairallah said "As myself I will be going to Mecca and raising support for our country with Islamic scholars, they're already calling it a Jihad, we need as much support as we can get and we need to keep those Iranian swines busy on as many fronts as possible until they collapse and when they collapse Assad and all theirs proxies collapse and we will be victorious."

Islamabad, Pakistan

After arranging everything with the Pakistani and convincing them that the foreign minister's trip was purely humanitarian, the foreign minister was on his way. He landed in Islamabad around 10:00 PM and was greeted by Pakistani officials and he met with the Pakistani ministry of health and their ministry for security and law enforcement and explained to them how Khataiy planned to invest in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Baluchistan but that he needed to personally visit these regions to rally local leaders and people to make it easier for Khataiyi companies to develop the areas, and the Pakistani government gladly agreed by sending him first to Peshawar on a small jet from Islamabad where he was arranged to meet tribal leaders about how he wanted to make their area rich, but in reality he was seeking out the Pakistani Taliban to convince them to attack the Iranian consulate in Quetta and ramp up attacks against Shias in the country. While his primary mission was in fact provoking in Iran from Pakistan, he was also ordered to genuinely find was to invest as it would help the Khataiyi economy and look good on Khataiy's behalf for helping less developed areas become more modernized, it also would cover for Khataiy's true intentions.

Waseem's forces were recently repelled by the Khataiyi army but that didn't stop them from coming back and hitting harder, their forces launched a multi-pointed attack managing to flank the defending Khataiyi soldiers multiple positions were stormed and taken quickly with little resistance but as the Khataiyi soldiers fell back further and further they managed to regroup and as Waseem's fighters approached the area where the Khataiyi army regrouped on a portion of the highway they were yet again held back by a strong defensive of dug in Khataiyi soldiers ready to give a good fight. Missiles were fired and snipers picked away at advancing infantrymen. Eventually Khataiyi helicopters came in to finish up for the day by firing rockets at Waseem's soldiers, bombarding them and causing them to falter and eventually go back to their lines, it seemed to be as if their initially strong offensive was becoming more and more a stalemate.

Onboard the USS Warrior:
Inside the Integrated Island

Multiple computers are set up with satellite images of the Waseem forces' attack on the Khataiyi Army. And recent drone surveillances showed multiple Waseem light-armor and military personnel traveling on three major routes to engage Khataiyi Fighters. The major focuses for the USS Warrior were the road from Kuzuculu and the river-valley leading into Kurk Murzban. The Destroyers and Military Aircraft were going to strike those major lines of transport;

"Captain, we have two F-35s and a Raven ready to be deployed to strike, sir!" shouts a random seaman.

"Good, we will have them patrol about 120 minutes before the strikes have hit. Once the missiles hit their target we send the jets in," responds the Captain,

One the runway of the USS Warrior

One F-35C has taken off, following the H-74S Raven. And after those two the last F-35C had taken off. The aircraft was not prepared for any dogfights in the air and they were specifically given orders not to engage any aircraft in the area unless provoked(i.e. getting shot at). In fact, the F-35C and the H-74S Raven relied on their stealth abilities and the advanced radars that came with the planes to locate other aircraft. And if given orders to attack, they would engage in long-distance combat. Fortunately for Huntpublics pilots and any other fighters, there was no need for air-to-air combat.

Over Kuzuculu; 0200 hrs

Missiles from the Destroyers in Huntpublics fleet had struck their targets, about 20 missiles in total were launched.

Image
Night-vision camera shot from a Waseem Soldier who saw one of the missiles strikes

Following the missile-strikes, the jets immediately flew in and struck along the two routes of the advancing forces. Destroying a major part of a road for the northernmost route of the two, and crippling part of the Waseem Offensive Forces. Whether or not the strikes were successful in damaging the Pro-Waseem forces, only time could tell, they were very resilient after all.

All was quiet at all of the JACT medical outposts including the FOB where most of the senior staff was located, but Janice who was in charge of the operation had made a note that more and more civilians were being displaced by the increased fighting between factions involved in the civil war each with their own motivations and goals for the area in was Khataiy was located. The nation of Khataiy was rich in resources that were valuable to all of the factions involved, but JACT's primary concern was for the safety of the civilian population of Khataiy, so she made the choice to make calls in order to get permission to hold some kind of peace conference to try and bring an end to the civil war in Khataiy. The process would take some time and the JACT Board of Directors was likely to deny the request because it's not something that JACT does and with all factions so adamant in their hate for each other in was likely to fail in bringing any kind of lasting peace to Khataiy, but she wanted to try anyway which she explained to the board in detail. The phone calls and reports would take weeks to convince them that it would help the civilians in Khataiy and hopefully end the civil war.

This is just a post about JACT's plans I will post an update when I have internet access again will most likely be long to explain in detail what the peace conference will entail.

5 Yassen's, 4 Akula's and 2 Victors, This was the spear that would launch the first attack on Syria. The Foreign Ministry had sent a declaration stating "All Syrian forces bot official and unofficial must be withdrawn from Khataiy by 12:00 PM tomorrow. Failure to comply will result in aggressive military action against your country." The subs now waited off the coast of Syria, their mission would be to eliminate the Syrian Naval presence in Latakia and to lay mines at the mouth of the port, Minelaying trawler would be close behind and would lay mines at the mouth of the port rendering it virtually useless. The Defence Ministry had put on a show for Assad consisting of the Mobilisation of two Armored Guards Divisions, three Motor Rifle Divisions, and 14 more submarines. While the Defence Ministry Did not plan to use these overwhelming forces they did have a strike on Damascus in the works. It would be the largest application of strategic airport since rolling thunder in Vietnam, consisting of 30 Tu-95s, 16 Tu-160s, and 20 Tu-22ms. The Raid would be escorted by Su-57s and Su-35s's. The plan if Assad were to ignore the Foreign Ministries request was to use overwhelming firepower on his capital and main port and then threaten a ground Invasion which would hopefully scare Assad to his senses. The only hitch in the plan was Syria's allies which the President assured would be dealt with. Now all the forces of Grater Tovakia could do is wait.

‘Releasing the void’

International Waters, 51 km west of Suwadiya
03:35 AM, 29/06/18

Assad had been given enough time. What was coming was on his own hands. A single transmission blared across the exclusion zone. Niel’s Varnaus decrypted it, and the Watch Officer handed the Admiral a short strip of paper, letters freshly stamped. Niels was impassive as he read it. He returned the strip to the Watch Officer, and gave a short order of his own.

Formation East was instructed to fire.

In the main Valaran tongue, Scaeva referred to a broadsword, designed for stabbing, and normally used in conjunction with a tower shield, combining protection and offensive power. The name fit the Class. The ship itself was the backbone of the Valaran Imperial Navy (VIN), being continuously produced since 2003. Even with the newer Skiras and updated Sarakirs coming online, the broadsword of the navy was still being produced.

The ship was a bruiser. Compared to the sleek newer hulls, the Scaevas appeared squat and thick-necked. Its weapons were more exposed, its design more uncompromisingly brutalist. Its dimensions were somewhat similar to a Sejong, though the Scaeva was longer than the South Korean vessel, and little resembled it otherwise. For one, its radar array was not the inclined planes of AEGIS, but a combination of APAR and SMART-L. The superstructure of the Scaeva hung low, with only the bulbous protrusion of the APAR array rising above. The Destroyer knew what it was, and bore its ungainly form with a stubborn confidence.

One thing it did share with the Sejong was its weapons layout. Most of the Scaeva’s VLS resembled the American Mk-41. It had forty-eight on the foredeck, and a further forty-eight mounted aft. Also abaft was a second type of VLS, larger in dimension and newer in form. These currently held the Salvard RGAV-266 LACM (Land-Attack Cruise Missile), which is what was fired today.

Though updated, the Salvard was a relatively old Cruise Missile. It was designed the mid-1980s, able to fly at transonic speeds, and employing terrain and satellite based guidance systems, as well as active-radar homing. This inevitably brought comparisons that other missile of the era, the Tomahawk TLAM. However, there are some notable differences. For one, the Salvard lacks the loitering ability of the Tomahawk. Though comparable in reach to earlier Tomahawk variants, the Salvard has a somewhat lower range than the later Blocks, at roughly 1,250 km. This reflects the relative fewer upgrades that the Salvard received, as the VIN instead chose to begin development on newer missiles. On the flip side, the Salvard mounts some greater ECCM capabilities — a Valaran speciality — proving resistant to spoofing measures. Thanks to its un-upgraded state, it is also somewhat cheaper to construct and maintain.. This made the Salvard something of a rarity for the age — it achieved near-mass production.

Each Scaeva is thus typically armed with thirty-six Salvards. These are normally in the larger VLS; although it even be fired from the Mk-41 VLS, these are normally reserved for defensive missiles or higher performance replacements like the Syvard. Frigates like the Miadar often also mount a small battery of Salvards — usually around eight-sixteen. The Sarakir did not mount any. It was a scaled-down Scaeva and was judged not to need such a large missile complement.

The launch comprised of thirty-two missiles: eight from the Miadar (its entire complement), and twenty-four from the Scaeva. One Salvard failed on launch, its turbofan preferring to combust itself moments after leaving a canister. The others arced up and themselves angled towards the Khatayi coast.

The launch occurred at night, when targets were more likely to be stationary, and less chance of altered positions from the fighting. A cluster of targeting satellites had positioned themselves over Khataiy in the day, transmitting IR, EO and radar data to the ships below. Once received it was then programmed into the Salvards, a laborious task that required at least an hour of continuous prepping.

The targets themselves were mostly camps and vehicles — groups of technicals bivouacked before the next day’s onslaught, clusters of tents and makeshift fortifications. There was an emphasis on hitting rear echelon elements of the Syrian offensive, with efforts made to find artillery batteries, units in reserve or being brought up to the front, C4 infrastructure and even some drone sites. As they were not directly in the fighting, they were more likely to cluster, and there was less chance of mistaking Khatayi positions for SAA ones. There was also an effort to spot and target MBTs, and any air-defence installations, though there seemed to be few of either.

The missiles sped off into the dark, and the glow from their launch faded. Its first job done, Formation East headed South, until it was 34km from Latakia, close enough to conduct surface searches right up to the shore. There it would be able to spot Syrian vessels emerging from the harbour. The three surface frigates and submarine began to arm a very different kind of SSM. They were expected to reach this position by 3:38 AM.

This was not the only hostile move of the night. Despite the exclusion zone being in place, there had been no word of the Khatayi naval blockade of Suwadiya lifting. As far as the Valarans were concerned, any warship there was now also free game. Formation North was tasked with this mission, and it swung south east. The rest of the outlying Valaran Formations followed suit, each rotating to the right. The effect was oddly like a clock face.

Reports suggested the Khatayi Navy still had some Otomats remaining (thought it was likely most of these had been expended in the preceding firefight with the Syrian Navy). The Otomat was known to be a very dangerous missile, something its relative age had not diminished. In particular, it was known to have a a strong ‘punch’, in the form of its weight and explosive charge. Normally the VIN would have preferred engagement beyond the Otomat’s range, but small area of the eastern Mediterranean made this tactic completely useless.

Instead, orders were to take advantage of the VIN’s superior sensors to locate and target Khatayi warships before the latter could spot the Valarans. This would primarily take place through use of indirect detection methods: submarines and helicopters. The two ships of Formation North (which would soon need a better name) could handle four helicopters between them, of which two would be on patrol simultaneously. These would fly close to the sea to avoid radar detection, before conducting ‘pop-up’ actions: quick rises in altitude, to peer over the horizon, before sharply descending again. This could allow the helicopters to be detected, but should give air-defence insufficient time to fire SAMs. In turn, the helicopters would scan the seas in front of them, albeit with significant time-gaps and incomplete data. The submarines, for their part, would simply switch on passive sonar, and angle it upwards.

Should the Otomats still be launched, the VIN was to try and exploit is weaknesses: the missile’s large size and unstealthy-shape, and its relative lack of either ECCM or complex manoeuvres. This would allow the VIN to at least detect the missile in time, and gave it multiple options for neutralisation. But even as he issued these orders, Admiral Niels felt a deep concern, or perhaps even fear. For all the training simulations in the world, had been a long time since he had to order his men to combat a real threat.

The shrouded glare from the missile launch faded, leaving the Admiral in darkness. He awaited the grey dimness of the morning.

Veldaron Press-Room, Astaria
08:55 AM, 29/06/18

Helen Tarengard was not one to be fazed by a press corps. She was a master of the deadpan gaze, the unblinking query, and the swift rebuttal. Upon request, the diplomat could muster arch concern, serious frowns, or easy smiles. All of these were vital qualities in the swingeing world of Valaran public policy.

Still, she hadn’t had her morning coffee, and this was as close to a national security crisis as it got. Washington might run on oil, Astaria ran on caffeine, and so did Helen Tarengard. She flicked open a briefing report, mostly to take her mind off the conference. Something about Tovakian threats… it wasn’t really filtering through. Helen had her thoughts on other things. Someone gave her a thumbs up. It was time.

Helen picked her way up to the podium, praying to heathen deities not to trip. Why did she choose heels again? She should have worn flats. It would have been a sign of subtle rebellion to wear flats — spitting in the face of decorous bullshit that was expected of women in her trade. Helen liked to be rebellious, all while maintaing a deadpan facade.

A few not-too swift steps to the podium. Then to face them — a seizure inducing level of camera flashes, a cacophony of clicks, and rows of tired, strained faces. Clearly Helen was not the only one to miss coffee.

She began. “As of this morning, the Valaran Empire has conducted three dozen airstrikes of President Assad’s forces in Syria. This is in response to Assad’s continuing invasion of southern Khataiy, an action in clear breach of that nation’s territorial sovereignty.”

Helen paused for effect. For a brief moment there was only the clicks and flashes of cameras, and frenzied scribbling. “Valaran never resorts to violence as our first port of call, but our hand has been forced by Assad himself. The Syrian Arab Army, Hezbollah, and their allied militias have ignored the multiple requests to remove themselves from occupied territories and return to the internationally recognised border. Instead they have continued their advance, at the cost of yet more lives. Syria’s unprovoked aggression, and Assad’s utter disregard for national sovereignty, will no longer be tolerated.”

“The strikes were conducted by vessels of the Seventh Patrol Fleet, under the command of Admiral Niels, at approximately 03:30 AM. These strikes targeted forward positions of Assad’s forces in Khataiy; there were no attacks on Syrian territory. As of now, we have no further details on the strikes — the situation will updated at various intervals later today. I will now take some questions.”

The silence, stretched out for the duration of the statement, now collapsed in on itself. A phalanx of hands rose. Helen pointed to a journalist she liked, someone from the Astaria weeklies. “What is the legal basis for these strikes?”

“The issue was discussed by the Cabinet, and the resolution was agreed on.”

“So you’re saying that Parliamentary approval is not required?”

“As per statute #1173, Parliamentary authority is not required on the grounds of International Security. territorial Sovereignty is grundnorm of international affairs, and is codified into international law. Syria’s invasion undermines this norm, and is broadly destabilising. Parliament be kept informed of the situation, with time allocated for special debates and intelligence briefings at 9:00-11:00 on Tuesday 04/07/18, and 11:00-13:00 on Thursday 12/07/18. The Defence and Foreign Affairs Select Committees will also hold their own hearings, though you will have to ask them for timetables.” Tarengard paused. She had briefed for this question; diplomats were practically trained to answer such queries. She looked for new hands, spotting one from the regional papers. “Yes.”

“Does this mean that the Government is now supporting the Khatayi Government?”

“We support the peaceful resolution to the conflict. That does not mean we support one side over another. Although these strikes may aid Khairallah, this is entirely incidental, and relates only to the specific context of Assad’s invasion — Khataiy is not invading Syria or Lebanon. But outside this, let me be clear: Khataiy remains under its own set of obligations. The exclusion zone affects his planes and ships as much it does Assad’s.”

The next question came from a well-regarded Aurelian broadsheet. “How do you expect these strikes to alter the situation on the ground?” As Helen could have expected, it was a very practical question. Aurelians always were.

“I cannot speak for President Assad, but we hope that he will get the message that his actions will not be tolerated by the international community, and will withdraw his forces. If this does not happen, we will apply sufficient pressure until his comes to this realisation.”

“Could I ask a follow-up to that? If territorial security is the government’s concern, why is it not also conducting similar response to the incursion of Turkish forces around Kurk Murzban?”

Helen nodded. “That is also a concern of ours. We judged the situation around Suwadiya to be a priority for humanitarian reasons, but it is clearly far from the only source of conflict in Khataiy at this time.” She started to relax, slightly. The announcement had been given, and she was easing into the ebb and flow of questions. She took another raised hand.

“Does the government still plan to take part in any peace talks?”

“We are very happy to send a delegation to any summit that occurs. It will be headed by one of our most brilliant and experienced diplomats.” Helen gave a laconic smile. “In other words, it will be headed by me.” There was a polite wave of chuckles. “We will work with all parties to resolve the conflicts taking place. The Valaran Empire is confident that these talks will improve the situation, though we caution against unrealistic optimism.” Helen scanned the room. “I will take one more question.”

Hands shot up. Helen pointed to an earnest looking looking in the front row. She had not seen this journalist before. “I’ll take you. You look eager for an answer.” More chuckles.

The journalist ignored the humour. Too earnest by half, Helen mused. Too young as well. “I have a question on Tovakia, which has issued its own threats to Assad. Was there any cooperation between Valaran and Tovakia on this?”

Helen allowed herself to give a small frown, as if considering the question seriously. “The Valaran Empire appreciates Tovakian support on this issue. But no, there has not been any formal coordination as such.”

“Does this appreciation extend to Tovakia striking Syria itself?”

Helen paused. It was not for effect. She hadn’t known about this. The room, which had begun to fall into the rhythm of questions now leaned forwards, with indrawn breath.

The journalist recognised the predicament. “By one account they’ve threatened to attack Damascus,” she offered.

Tarengard paused a second more. “The Valaran Empire does not consider strikes on Syria itself necessary at this time. Attacking urban or populated centres could lead to losses of civilian life or collateral damage.”

“Should we take that as criticism of Tovakia?”

“Take it under advisement,” Helen responded instinctively. There were a few scattered chuckles. It was perhaps not the time to have made a joke. “The Valaran Empire will not comment on specific threats at this time. Does that answer your query?”

“Yes-”

Helen began to make a closing statement.

“-though I have one follow up.”

“As long as its quick.” Helen smiled, somewhere between indulgent and threatening.

The woman rattled off her response. “If Valaran is not endorsing Tovakian strikes, and if Tovakian planes fly over Suwadiya to strike at Assad’s positions, does this mean that they will be considered to be breaching the Exclusion Zone… and if so, will Valaran take action against them?”

The room knew a pointed question when it heard one. Helen had already been shaken once; she wouldn’t let it happen a second time.

She fixed the reporter with an unbreaking, impassive gaze, the sort honed by a decade of high-level of experience. “I am not commenting on hypotheticals. But our policy is simple: unless authorised, no military craft is crossing that exclusion zone. That is all I have to say at this time. Thank you all.”

After Production Control Coordinator Janice Velazquez had recovered she had heard about Commodore Qamar's actions in securing the base and the other outposts where JACT Guards and medical staff were posted, but she was listening to the news and reading reports about the escalation of the civil war in Khataiy. This had been going through her head ever sense she was in recovery, so she looked over the guard reports and numbers and she noticed that there were enough guards to protect people if there were to be a peace conference held at the JACT Medical FOB. While she knew that a "true peace" would be difficult to obtain given the ideals of each faction towards each other, but she told all of the world's news media that she would be holding a press conference...

(At the Press Conference outside of her office in the JACT Medical FOB)
[PCC Janice Velazquez]
Good morning members of the press, I have called this press conference to say that I am inviting all of the factions leaders or representatives to the JACT Medical FOB to discuss terms of a peace treaty or armistice. I have seen the costs of this war and I'm doing this for the civilians of Khataiy who are suffering because of all of the fighting going on. I also urge any nation carrying out bombing campaigns to cease their actions and come to the conference and talk about finding some kind of peaceful solution to end this war. I have seen many civilians injured adults and children alike just last week a mother brought her 9 year old daughter to one of our medical outposts where medical staff there worked on the little girl for hours saving her life, but the doctors had to amputate both of her legs. Which is one of the reasons why I want to hold this peace conference because this war needs to end as it's what's best for all civilians here in Khataiy no matter their ethnic background. That's all I have to say you're free to talk with the medical staff and guards here as long as you don't get in their way or stop them from doing their jobs.

After the press conference PCC Janice Velazquez went back into her office amid camera flashes and intermittent reporter questions. While in her office she began going over reports from the outposts and from the medical FOB about the civil war.

You can have reporters from your nation interview doctors and guards at the Medical FOB, but the Doctors have to be professional and the guards have to be focused on their duties
