HUGHES ALMOST PERFECT, ROCKETS NOW 7-1
By Taylor Larson,
Jennifer Hughes took a perfect game into the eighth inning against Crystalline Caverns, in what was the highlight of the last three games. With one away in the inning, Hughes surrendered a single to break up the bid, but still finished with the complete game shut out and one-hitter, fanning 18 batters along the way. The 18 strikeouts is a career high for Hughes at the international level. Newmanistan now has not surrendered a run to Crystalline Caverns in either of the two games played.
“Yeah, I was thinking about it,” Jennifer said when asked about the bid for a perfect game, “I started thinking about it after the seventh inning and not surprisingly it was the next inning where I surrendered the hit. Most importantly we won the game, and that is really the important thing, as you know.” Had Hughes completed the perfect game, it would have been the first such effort by a Rockets pitcher since Courtney Duvall had the very memorable one against Musterfield at the start of World Baseball Classic 39 qualifying. Hughes has tossed a perfect game in the ENBL in her career once. Duvall, who threw a nine-inning shutout against Crystalline Caverns in their first meeting (Rockets won in 10) told us she was certainly aware, “Oh definitely, as a pitcher you are on to that,” Duvall said, “This is one of my favorite parts of the Classic, in being able to root for someone line Jennifer when otherwise you are rivals in the ENBL. After the fifth inning, I definitely noticed, but I was not going to mention anything about it to her. Hannah Lee and I were talking about it quite a bit.” Second baseman Michelle Covington made a diving bid out of desperation to field the single that snuck through between Mallory Harris, and wish she could have gotten it. “I think after that, you second guess where you were positioned, even though that’s pretty silly because you were positioned correctly. Normally you don’t even dive for that ball, but I had too!” Covington exclaimed. Covington is also a teammate of Jennifer Hughes with the Jessicaville Millionaires.
Speaking of the Millionaires, reports have it that they have offered free agent SS Kayla Carey a four year deal worth $30.3 million per season. It is a lucrative deal which is also loaded with incentives that would interestingly have Covington and Carey in the same infield for the entire ENBL season as well. Carey’s agent, in response, stated, “Kayla is excited to receive this offer from Jessicaville, but is not ready to make a commitment as to her future at this time. She is interested in seeing offers from anywhere, and by anywhere, I mean exactly that.” The agent said that one international inquiry has been made. “The international team that made an inquiry to Kayla is something that she is very interested by.” No further information about the team in question was available at this time. Who knows if there will be more that are out there for her.
Getting back to the Rockets, Newmanistan’s upcoming games, which have a bye day tomorrow, are in Hampton Island, then home to Stetzra. The game against the Golden Bears will be interesting, as there has been some tension between the two sides, the vast majority of it being initiated (ok, all of it) by Hampton Island. Rockets players have recently said that enough was enough , and that retaliation can start to be expected.
