Technically clothes aren't necessary in warmer climates, but people still wear them.
And I disagree. Art in some form is necessary for most societies to function. Architecture, for example, relies heavily on art. Without it, we wouldn't have buildings...

We don't need the gov't to fund clothes, though.

Does it even matter? Culture is subjective. It doesn't really matter what form it comes in. Your view of good culture isn't necessarily correct, and neither is mine. Stop acting like any opinion on this can possibly be factual.

Technically the White House gardens don't need to be landscaped, but they still do it anyway...
That train of thought, basing funding on need, leads us to some very weird places.

The problem is, only crappy avant garde art ever gets government funding. A picture of a jar filled with piss that has a crucifix inside isn't that good of art, but that's the type of art the government usually funds.

If something is popular, that makes it good. If it isn't, it's bad. Something offensive isn't going to be popular, but something innocuous will be.

Since more copies of twilight are sold than copies of of Plato's dialogues, it's quite clear which are more worth reading.

If more people like it, then it's good for those people. I cant decide for other people whether a song, book, or movie is good or not, I can only decide for myself and hope others agree.

Maybe I'd prefer to read the Dialogues, but maybe others do not. It's not my place to make that decision for them.
