I took Sociology 101 at my community college.
My teacher liked me, but he also like to make fun of me for being a Marxist.

That is odd, considering that post-1960s sociology is dominated by Marxists and anarchists. Even if he was not a Marxist himself, it seems odd that he would make fun of one. Any sociologist, whether they like it or not, is surrounded by Marxists and anarchists.

I spend most of my time talking about Marx. Weber is okay, but Spencer's work is really only valuable in studying the history of sociology.

I don't like any of the ones you mentioned, especially functionalism (which is almost dead anyway) and symbolic interactionism (which is based on American idealism and pragmatism).

Tis a crime to ignore the great Spencer. You do a great disservice, methinks.

Weber is alright, yes. I think The Protestant Ethic is enlightening, though I can see why his definitions of things could conflict with that of Marx's.

I said no, because it's utopian.

Did this fellow have a Ph.D. in sociology or only an M.A.?

I'm pretty sure I was the only Marxist and the closest thing to an anarchist in that class.

But why is it fun he would make fun of me for being a Marxist? He was just joking around.
But he called himself an Eisenhower Republican.
He was pretty cool though. I really enjoyed that class and having him as a teacher.

He had a Master's Degree I think. I know he didn't have a Ph.D.

Since I'm fairly cynical, I prefer the theory that basically boils everything down to conflict.

I remember when we learned about the different theories. The teacher said "Alright. How many of y'all think Structural-Functionalism is correct?" No one raise hand. "So y'all are all a bunch of cynics. Alright, how many of y'all think Marx was more correct than Durkheim?" Everyone raise hand.
