CENIAN NATIONAL BASKETBALL TEAM - IBC 25
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CENTER - ORION DARKSTAR - 26 years old - DNS United
Playing for Southpoint Technical College in the NSCAA, Orion Darkstar, and his school, were left out of most pundits' early predictions, but the school surprised all the commentators, with Darkstar at the heart of the team's effort, with an overall excellent point differential, indicating Darkstar's ability not only to shoot well, but also to defend well. After the Technicall College stopped funding its basketball program, Darkstar was poached by defending champions the University of Cenial and had another successful season of college basketball before being selected for professional team DNS United upon his graduation.

POWER FORWARD - ASHUR EL-AMIN - 24 years old - New Oxford Mercury
Ashur El-Amin may be one of the most prolific scorers for his team but also led the University of New Oxford (and, now, the New Oxford Mercury) in the defense as well, the very model of an all-around player who excels on both ends of the court. He is of somewhat average height, like many Cenians, but makes up for that with an with an excellent lay-up and three-point shot; his rebound is actually his best basketball move. He has worked well with his team both in the NSCAA and in the CeniHoops, and might be getting reliable playing time, especially considering how well his team has done both in CeniHoops and the NSCAA, with New Oxford reaching the Final Four four years ago, only losing in a tight game against Sadeg State.

SMALL FORWARD - WES JARIK - 32 years old - New Oxford Mercury
Wes Jarik is a very accurate foul-shooter and three-point shooter that tries to get fouls called on him pretty easily; he is one of the smaller players in the game, and is versatile on the defense, using that small height to his advantage to guard players of different heights and abilities. He serves as a pivot between a lot of the different parts of the Cenian basketball game; passing, shooting, rebounding, and blocking are all part of his responsibilities for the team. He played extremely well for the New Oxford Mercury, a team which achieved second place, in the new CeniHoops basketball league.

SHOOTING GUARD - ACE STARGAZER - 31 years old - Whitehaven Storm
Ace Stargazer is a bit of an unusual name for an unusual man. He's one of the tallest players on the Cenian team, and can play with the best of the best in the defense and the offense. He is a good ball handler and passes well; additionally, he has a good guarding motion due to his height. He also switches with Wes Jarik as small forward and is instrumental in creating lots of plays with his passing ability. Most importantly, Stargazer is responsible for scoring, and that he does with a vengeance, with an extremely accurate jump shot and dunk, both due to his height.

POINT GUARD - NEIL HALCYON - 29 years old - Cenial Phoenix
Neil Halcyon is perhaps the savior of the Cenian team in this tournament. He is a good all-around player, but as the point guard, he specializes in creating plays and assists for his teammates. Known as a leader on the court, Halcyon is an excellent reader of other players and has a strategy and sticks to it. However, with this in mind, he has the capacity to surprise a defense by either driving in for a basket or hitting a three-pointer; he is extremely versatile in this regard, but mostly known for hitting great three pointers at a high accuracy rate. He led Cenial Phoenix to the title in the new CeniHoops league, and their first international title, showing off his calm demeanor and his basketball skills.

CENTER - ARALUS MAR-SHAYAL - 27 years old - Whitehaven Storm
Mar-Shayal, the older brother of fellow basketball talent Kel, broke onto the stage with his wonderful performance at the Endemian College at Whitehaven, leading his team to a respectable showing in the NSCAA tournament overall. Tall and thin, Mar-Shayal is definitely capable of using his height to project power across the court; he excels with three-point shots and dunks, and is surprisingly quick for such a tall player. Not only can he score, though, he can defend as well, with an excellent rebound statistic and a good performance at blocking shots as well. Overall, Mar-Shayal makes an excellent center because of his combination of offensive and defensive skills, quickness, and hight, which allows him to effectively keep the team going.

POWER FORWARD - JAVIER AIZA - 24 years old - Huracán Norteño
Aiza takes quite a lot of initiative on the court and has a good passing and rebounding game. He often serves as a link between the offense and the defense on his team but says he has a better defensive game, working well to harry the opposition team and getting them to make mistakes. Aiza is in the mid-height wing for a basketball player, only around six foot four, but still manages to get into his rebounding role with quite a bit of creativity to make up for his lack of height. He was the guiding force for both his CeniHoops team, Huracán Norteño, and for the University of Ceni-Santiago, which was the surprise fourth seed in the entire NSCAA.

SMALL FORWARD - PHILLIP LOMAX - 28 years old - Cenial Phoenix
Although the University of Ceni underperformed in their conference, getting only 4th in the regular season, they won their conference championship to get into the Ultra 64. Lomax was one of the better players in his school and one of the better small forwards throughout the Cenian schools in NSCAA. As a small forward, he leads the team on offense and dunks while working in the man-to-man defense to deny the opposition shots. As a player, he works well with coaches who have a fast style of play, as he likes to be aggressive and shoot the ball a lot.

SHOOTING GUARD - ERIC ELGIN - 26 years old - Cenial Phoenix
Although Elgin was overlooked for the national team after conference play with the University of Cenial, where the team had to sneak in the Ultra 64 by way of at-large seeding, Elgin - and the team - had a renaissance in the Ultra 64 itself, going undefeated to win the NSCAA 7 title, defeating both the number 2 and 1 seeds (Corinth City and Sadeg State, both from Drawkland) along the way. Quite successful in the tournament, Elgin is a quintessential combo guard or tweener player in basketball; he swaps around positions and has quite a fluid style of play, on the offense and the defense. On the offense, he has a nice three-point shot and a good dunk, due to his height, and he's a very good team player, working with others to pass and score as it allows. He somewhat doubles as a center as well, despite his nominal position of shooting guard, due to his height and ability to rebound, dunk, and score. It takes a lot to get past Elgin in the defense as well as he likes to maintain a monopoly on the ball to prevent the offense from scoring, and he has an excellent hook shot to boot.

POINT GUARD - KIANA KE'SAHNDRHAN - 28 years old - Whitehaven Storm
The only woman on this team, Ke'Sahndrhan has the misfortune of being a point guard with the eminent Cenian Neil Halcyon occupying the starting spot on the national team. Playing for Whitehaven Naval Academy in the NSCAA, she outshone some of the more touted pre-season players as her team won their conference and did fairly well in the NSCAA Ultra 64 tournament. The navy believed in teamwork and Ke'Sahndrhan was no exception; as the point guard for her team, she is responsible for much of the passing going on with her team and excels in that regard, and as the point guard for her team, she's an excellent leader on the pitch.

NEWMANISTAN ROCKETS

“Two Time IBC Champions”

Basketball in Newmanistan: Basketball has a solid following in Newmanistan, though the fans are drawn to the college level a little moreso then the pros. It’s popularity is regional in nature, with the Loudon area in northeast Newmanistan being the most fanatical towards the sport and that is the reason the Emperor has chosen Loudon to be home base for the team and not the traditional spots of Tundra Falls and Pocono City during the qualifying stage of the tournament. This is a competition that Newmanistan had success in back in the day, winning both IBC 4 and 5. That was a long time ago, but the Empire was able to advance to the playoffs in their return to international play in IBC 23, so they feel like they are on the right track. Improvement was shown in IBC 24, to create more optimism for this year.

Basketball is played differently in Newmanistan. There is an additional line behind the three-point line that serves as a four-point line. Shots behind the half-court line are worth six points. Players are taught how to shoot from longer then expected distances at a young age, so they will have a higher level of success at these shots in comparison to those who have not routinely practiced them. Be aware of this in the IBC, because while the four-point line will not exist in the tournament, our players are comfortable putting up shots from distances that you’re team might not be used to having to tightly defend. They are unlikely to put up shots from beyond the half court line, though, in this tournament. The big key to remember is that within the halfcourt, be expecting a shot from anywhere.

Coach: James Parsons, 61 (Loudon Leopards)
Uniforms: Envision the uniforms of the University of North Carolina as the best comparison.

Starting Five:

SF: Daquan Wilson, 31 (6'9", Putnam Lake Eagles) (#34)
PF: Jaylon Wright, 29 (6'10", Southport Tigers) (#33)
C: Travis Brown, 32 (7'4", Tundra Falls Saints) (#50)
SG: Kenny Atwood, 28 (6'2", Loudon Leopards) (#11)
PG: Quinton Fayne, 29 (6'5", Loudon Leopards) (#3)

– Atwood and Fayne are the playmakers of the lineup. In particular, Fayne will put up a shot from anywhere on the court at home, and in this tournament he is the one that will have to be closely guarded at all times. Atwood will put up the long shot as well, as will Wilson if you forget about him. Brown is more then just a giant in the paint. He will camp out there and look to grab rebounds, and is often successful, at both ends of the court. Defensively, he is a star, and tactically smart, making him tough to beat. Wright is good on the boards as well.

Bench:
F: Jake Kenwood, 32 (6'7", Centralia Cougars) (#44)
F: Carnell Larribee, 31 (6'9", Pocono City Capitals) (#32)
F/C: Byron Storm, 26 (7'2", Olympia Gladiators) (#55)
C: Tiberius Connelly, 27 (6'11", Springfield Thoroughbreds) (#45)
G: Rick Dunne, 31 (6'1", Dover City Mountaineers) (#23)
G: Dwayne Murray, 24 (6'4", Brighton Bulls) (#4)
Utility: Sheik Mohammed, 28 (6'7", South Charlotte Condors) (#21)

All of these players are stars at home, therefore Newmanistan will not hesitate to put any of them in when necessary. Murray is blossoming into an amazing shooters, and leads the Empire in 4-point and 6-point shooting percentage.

IBC 25: Group stage preview
The 25th International Basketball Championship - a milestone championship in the event's history - will be taking place shortly in Banija and Filindostan, and Ceni will come into the event as the number three ranked team in the event, making them one of the favorites, besides Abanhfleft and Vangaziland, the event's number one and two teams, to win the whole event.

The Cenian national team relies on a mixture of youngsters coming out of the NSCAA tournament and veterans with several years of experience in the CeniHoops League, but it really hasn't changed from the last couple of International Basketball Championships. Orion Darkstar is by far the most physical player on the team, the tallest and most muscular; he holds the team together through brute strength, but the rest of the team relies on creativity and ingenuity to get the ball past taller and burlier defenses. Neil Halcyon, in particular, is the best team member at this strategy, jinking and dodging opposing players and relying on an accurate three-point shot to score past taller players, like Drawkians. Ace Stargazer and Wes Jarik are two other players excelling in this type of play, working together as a team to help penetrate these more difficult defenses. Finally, Ashur El-Amin is one of the young guns who excelled in the NSCAA tournament, reaching the semifinals, and it's easy to see why: he's a fast and dynamic player who can speed past opposing defenses.

Strategy-wise, Coach Garen Dawnshadow has relied on a wheel offense for the past couple of cups. Since the team doesn't rely on a couple of superstars (Neil Halcyon probably being the exception) and is relatively short but well-balanced, the wheel offense has been effective in bringing the team to number three in the world. The team's solid ball-handling skills and constant offense is able to keep taller teams off guard, and of course slightness can also be an advantage in always keeping the ball moving.

Ceni was drawn in Group E, to be played in Filindostan and more specifically the island of Pelita Raya, with the countries of Free Republics, Valladares, Crystalline Caverns, North New South Wales, and the Purity Complex. The latter three teams are unranked, and while the former teams are ranked, they are ranked 15th and 22nd respectively - hardly a hard group for the world number three. It should be easy wins all throughout the group stage for the Tir Snakes. Looking ahead towards the round of 16, the team will face a team from the second half - of course to be announced, but Abanhfleft and Valanora would be the big guns in the Banijan half and thus the Tir Snakes should be looking to avoid them. Nonetheless, they should have a good tournament overall - that is, if things go according to plan.

Get up early to watch the Arminhos in RTL!

5am isn't usually the time the people wake up in Lisander, unless one needs to drive a little bit more to the job/school. But in the next days, you have an excuse to sleep and wake earlier. RTL will broadcast the games of Lisander in International Basketball Championships 25, directly from Filindostan!

Lisander will face the nation of Aji-no-Moto, also a rookie team in IBC. Everybody expects a good result, since the team was training together for the last two weeks, first in the training center of Concordia University, before travelling to Massakar, where they will play their first game in the Massakar Sports Garden, a 8763-seat arena, that's expected to be full of Basketball Fans, since Filindostan is one of the powerhouses of the sport.

Tiago Howells, AC Kasandora Basketball idol and shooting guard for the national team, appeared in the last media conference and told us a little about the expectations of the team, that seem to have changed after the group draw, when Lisander ended up in the same group of Abanhfleft, the new world ranking leaders after the shocking announcement of the Kanyean Organization for Basketball Enterntainment (KOBE), that retired its national team from international competitions:

"We didn't expect face a opponent that strong in the group stage, but now that's it. We know we're way behind them in terms of training and evolution. We respect the fleftics a lot, but we'll give our best to give them a worthy challenge..."

So, keep an eye open on this team. Or saying better, open both of your eyes to watch them. Tomorrow, 5am, on RTL, after Late Night Cine and Before National Morning News!

(Due to the transmission of IBC25, we'll broadcast Local Morning News only as a brief resume during halftime of each match.)

Information about this Team Quebec

The Grim Reapers, after terrible performances in IBCs 22-24 due to Royal Quebecois Basketball Federation's incompetence with men's team, is looking to bring its first legitimate, full-team squad in a decade. The team, this time, is an interesting mix of veterans and youth, with large numbers of veterans (highlighted by class of 2022). The most notable of the youths is the joining of 4 college athletes in Point Guards Owen McDonagh (California M) and Clara Bowen-Young (Saguenay W) and Centres Kim Hong-Ja (Farrer W) and Noah Pantin (Carleton M). The collegiate prospects, making the past collegiate year the most exciting one since 2021-22 season, are expected to follow the dominant lead by the legendary basketballers Pierre-Ian McArthur, Austin-Luc Bergeron, Allison Dubois, Riley Jeon-Keane and Kang Su-Min, as well as an excellent QBL rookies and sophomores corp.

This team is talented across the boards, with the lack of gametime experience and success by men's teams made up by excellent careers the women's team had in olympics, commonwealth games and IBCs 21-22. With the even skill and strength level, as well as the transition phase the team is going through, the player minutes will most likely be very even (expect the best players to have only 5 more minutes in playing time than the weakest players). It is important to note that, however, due to the lack of practice times and the IBC held over the Quebecois summers, that the forms of players may be inconsistent at times. This is going more evident than not with the guards and to lesser extent small forwards (and they're not even that old!), as the quality of guards available for the IBC has been great but all but Dubois are known to be very inconsistent scorers. Frontcourt? Most teams will not last there for long, so the key part in beating this edition of Team Quebec would be backcourt scoring and guarding well against the guards.

As for the starting lineup, expect the five best players to start. On the backcourt, well-run veteran Auston-Luc Bergeron will be using his passing skills and 4.3/40 yard dash speed to complement the excellent shooting game by Allison "The Chef Curry" Dubois, a third of the Big 3 core that propelled women's. With her dazzling play and near-halfcourt shooting range, Dubois can net three-pointers as long as her mentale is set perfectly. As for the front court, there is going to be a minor adjustment from the usual that Coach Yu tried in past : 30-year old Kang Su-Min is looking to continue her 2032-33 QBL MVP form while twin tower of Pierre-Ian McArthur (playing PF) and Riley "THE MOST DOMINANT, RK-47" Jeon-Keane stand tall, dominating and almost impenetrable on post.

With the strong starting core, an excellent depth group of supporting players and much more experience, the Quebecois National team looks to fill the stadia of Banija and Filindostan with the baskets, physical displays and of course violent actions and loud chants by the Bubonic Plague. Scythe, Grim Reapers!

Basketball Omerica
Roster for the 25ᵗʰ International Basketball Championships

Basketball does not the kind of significance football—often referred to as the national religion—does, but it comes close to rivalling volleyball as Omerica’s second-most important sport. Though it does not have the kind of universal love volleyball enjoys, it does have BasketLeague. Though it must compete with the national tradition that is the Commonwealth Cup, basketball has become an important part of the national sports landscape.

The fall of the Omerican Football Federation and the dissolution of the Premier League presented a potential golden age for Omerican basketball until the
Fédération sportive oméricaine, the national Olympic committee of Omerica, put a stop to Omerican involvement in international sport until the Omerican crisis of confidence was sorted. It proved beneficial to BasketLeague, however, which enjoyed unrivalled status as Omerica’s most viewed sports league while Omerican football suffered from the lack of a unified national championship.

With the FSO embargo now lifted and Omerican interest in basketball at an all-time high, Basketball Omerica will now attempt to stage a grand comeback…

Coach: Alain Desjardins (age 44)
Assistant Coach: Sidney Gibbs (age 40)

IBC: Free Republics 89, Valladares 53
by: Judith Mattsson

The International Basketball Championships has not been a tournament that Republican teams have been particularly good in over the years. From the National Basketball Team's 2-6 record in IBC 22 to their fluke 6-2 record 2 years ago with just a +10 point differential to their 5-5 fluke second place finish last year, this team has never really looked like a serious contender in the IBC. Even coming off of consecutive Round of 16 exits, oddsmakers throughout the Federation were expecting Valladares, which was actually an elite basketball country at one time, to finish second in this group. Few observers in the Free Republics expected a win in this game and nobody predicted a win of this magnitude.

This game started with the Republicans going on a 15-0 run, with new starting small forward Jasenko Markovic sinking 4 jumpers during that run while Brandon Owens blocked consecutive shots from Santiago Mina. This would be the story of the game as an 8 inch height disadvantage was simply too much for the undersized Valladar center to overcome. This stretch set the tone for the rest of the game. The best the Valladars could do was cutting the deficit to 18-10 by the end of the first quarter. However, the Republicans responded with another run as Markus Herrmann, the old man of the starting lineup at 31, landed 3 consecutive threes to open the second. From there, the floodgates opened as the Republicans put the game completely out of reach. As the horn sounded for halftime, the Republican lead was 52 to 23.

With a 29 point lead at the half, coach Leon Alexeyeva opted to send his starters to the showers early, allowing his backups the opportunity to finish out the remainder of the game. Marius Bertelsen would prove to be the hottest hand on the bench, putting up 13 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks on the day. After the game, coach Alexeyeva told me that "[Bertelsen] made a compelling case for more playing time tonight. We'll have to see how we can work him into our plans going forward but rest assured he's going to be seeing lots of playing time if he keeps playing like that."

The next opponent for the Republican National Team is The Purity Complex, who lost their opener to North New South Wales by a 73-71 margin. The major concern for this game will be the possibility of the team looking ahead to their showdown with Ceni, which looked every bit the #3 team in the multiverse in a 101-68 blowout win against Crystalline Caverns. The Free Republics-Ceni game will be the 3rd game of the group stage for both teams. The Republicans will once again play in Arena Olahraga Yogyakulta instead of the smaller Bandaroon Arena as the hosts appear to be scheduling our National Team's games in the larger arena to accomodate the several thousand Republican fans who made the trip to Filindostan.

Tempo. Defense.

Game 1 for the Vangaziland Royals National Team would boil down to two words. Tempo and Defense. The team would look to establish their offensive pace while managing Valliesta. The Royals got off to a confident start in what would become a one sided match. There are often close games in the IBC, this just didn't happen to be one of them.

Yulssen started things off on the first play with his left hand raised. As he looked down the court, the crowd began to cheer. Not for him, but because the season had started. Everybody in the building was excited and the crowd rose to a fever pitch. The game took place at the Joseph Wilson Arena in Eastern Banija. Many spectators were locals fairly neutral to the outcome. The Vangazi and Banijans have had cordial diplomatic relations and that extends to the sports front.

Vangaziland got off to a quick lead, going on a 10 - 4 run in the first 5 minutes. Yulssen was behind the scenes. Two of his passes led to assists as he moved the ball through Chris Ironwrought. Ironwrought swung his pivot foot and feinted before driving. He kicked out, once back to Hectare and once to Ewingson for 3. The offense was fluid and the PG barely had to touch the ball.

The Royals got a little sloppy on defense as they seemed to catch their breath and gave up 5 quick points. That's when Hectare seemed to sprint forward but pulled back in a stutter step cross. It bucked the defender who stayed with him, but rocked dramatically. The Vannish fans shouted an *OH* in unison. The Vannish captain skipped and popped the ball back under his legs to the right. Sprinting to the left and crossing the ball back in front of him, he took off. He was a threat to the lane and a forward stepped up to intercept. This left Juell Sampsen open. The PF isn't a big scorer and was glad to leap for a two handed slam. He fist bumped the relatively diminutive 6'1 PG before being beat in the race back up the floor.

The Royals ended the first quarter with a slight lead that would increase by halftime. The Vannish defensive effort had already gotten noticed. The team wasn't taking chances against the unranked team and welcomed them to the IBC with a half court press. It did leave the Vangazi tired. Yulssen was in marathon mode, putting on a major effort on both sides of the ball. The coach let Eaglesen play much of the 3rd quarter.

Parkssen didn't score much, but dominated the Vannish low post on D. Valliesta would struggle to scrap offensive boards or put anything up near the basket. This continued into the 2nd half, with Hurcle seeing lots of 4th quarter minutes. Foyelson showed a complex rotation, giving her starters plenty of rest.

Of course all eyes were on the newest starter, Mark Ewingson. Late in the 3rd quarter, Ewingson came from behind to strip the opposing shooting guard as that player tried a fast break. It became a 2 on 1 with Steven Eaglesen. They passed the ball back and forth. It ended in the 6'6 SG's hands who leapt in the air. With one knee forward, and one hand on the ball, he brought the ball down and then back up in a half-windmill type dunk.

Asked about it after the game, he called it 'The Disco' for it's similarity to the finger pointing dancing style of the 1970s.

As the game winded down, it was well out of reach. It was one of the most tactical games of the first matchday. Ewingson would lead scoring with 23 points. He added 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Yulssen had a quiet shot with 9 points, but he was integral with 8 assists and 2 steals. After a cold streak to start the 3rd quarter, he seemed to stop shooting. He ran the offense around his shooting guard, setting him up for different angles.

Sarah Overson also got playing time in a lot of the 3rd and 4th quarters. In one encounter, she squared up against her opponent and dribbled in both directions, looking for some give. Her opponent was holding her off. Every time they reached for the ball, she popped it behind her back and jumped forward. It was a classic streetball clutch on the ball. Sarah was a trickster with her handle, but she tried not to cross the line into insult.

"I think we surprised them with how strong we came out for game 1", Overson said post game. "That's what a competitor has to do. They played us well tonight, but we had the element of surprise on our side. Valliesta can watch tape, learn from this game and bring a little of this to their rivals."

Eaglesen was ineffective and lost many 4th quarter minutes to Overson. He'd finish with 4 points and 3 assists. He just couldn't seem to get things going. His shot was cold, as he went 2 for 7 from the field. Manny Battle led rebounding efforts from his bench minutes with 11. All in all, the Vannish bench was quite active.

Moe Carter got the least amount of minutes, but was glad to get time on the floor in his second year. Jake Frost found some time and had a few shots totaling 8 points. He also pulled a block on a rival guard's layup. The Vangazi showed up motivated and can be expected to carry their enthusiasm into the next game.

"It's good that our shots are falling", said Head Coach Kate Foyelson. This is her second year at the helm of the Royals. She took the team to the Championship in her first year. Now her sights are higher. "We need to turn a good first game into a consistent stretch. Then hopefully into a playoff run."

"Today, the Saint Kanye Basketball Association has announced that it will voluntarily not take part in the coming International Basketball Championships, which is now about to celebrate its 25th edition. This announcement comes as a surprise to the entirety of the basketball world but especially here in Abanhfleft as a great rivalry has now formed between the two nations following their respective national basketball teams' attempts to contest the International Basketball Championships...."

"Yo, bro, have you heard the news?"

"Yeah, I have. So Saint Kanye's no longer going to play in the IBC, huh? Finally. Those upstarts finally realized that there was nothing to be gained by keeping on winning every IBC title out there. Finally, the conspiracy loses one very important member of its perfidious community. Those Kanyeans finally backed down. Our work has paid off. The conspiracy has been exposed, and Saint Kanye no longer wants to be part of it."

"Yes. This is a victory for Abanhfleft and her fans! No longer will we endure the misery of those purple and lime bastards always running away with the game against our boys. Nothing can now stand in the way of Abanhfleft becoming the new dominant force in international basketball!"

"Still, though, I have to say that it feels a bit strange not seeing Saint Kanye in the IBC. Who are we going to boo throughout the tournament now?"

"Well, there's always West Phoenicia. Remember that shit they did to our fans in Newmanistan? And then they had the balls to joke that our team should be charged for the damages. The motherfuckers should have had their day in court. I thought that Yeezie woman attorney the fans hired was good. But what happened to the case? Absolutely fucking nothing. Those fucking Phoenicians are part of the conspiracy, and they colluded with the Yeezie bitch to let the case go quietly."

"Wasn't she the ambassador one of our cells kidnapped during that particular IBC in Qasden, was it? D'you really think she's going to take our side after that? Our brothers and sisters should have made a better choice for their counsel. Now the Phoenicians will never get to pay for what they did."

"Maybe we should work on roughing them up next. That's an idea, at the very least."

"Maybe not now. All the attention is on us after Saint Kanye dropped out. While I'd very much love to claim all the credit for forcing them out of the IBC, more than probably they did it of their own accord, and if we try to ride on their coattails, we'll get called out for the bullshit sooner rather than later. And we don't need the attention that another kidnapping is going to cause us. We got lucky that the RBI busted only one cell in Qasden. We can't do anything much in Banija and Filindostan. Banija is a friend, and so is Filindostan, but our hands are practically tied. We will have to go back to our old tactics."

"Social media and fake news it is, then. Vyievra Abanhfleft! And death to all of Abanhfleft's enemies! Death to the Great Conspiracy! Death to Pasarga! Death to Saint Kanye! Death to West Phoenicia! Death to all those who would deny Abanhfleft a sporting championship!"

"Vyievra Abanhfleft and death to her enemies! Death to the Great Conspiracy!"

The "Real Fans of Abanhfleft" notwithstanding, almost everyone else in the country was very much surprised to find out that Saint Kanye had voluntarily pulled out of participating in future editions of the International Basketball Championships. To tell the truth, the fans, much as they said they hated Saint Kanye for always having the upper hand in contests against Abanhfleft, were now very much looking forward to meeting the Yeezies on the parquet floor once again, preferably in the finals but any opportunity to finally get one over the purple and lime and knock them out of the competition was also good. But now it was not going to happen.

Surprisingly, Jazz Higgs, the half-Drawk half-Yeezie center playing for the Uranium City Nukes of the FBA and the Fleftic national basketball team, was one of the people least affected with this particular event. He didn't think that he wouldn't give too little a damn about it, but here he was, going through rehabilitation training following his horrific injury in IBC 24 to get himself back in shape for the 25th edition of the IBC coming up. When Jazz heard about Saint Kanye's decision to not play in the IBC anymore, he didn't feel anything about it. Some wonder and curiosity, of course, but Jazz couldn't be half-arsed to really care about the fact that the country of his mother's birth was not going to play in the IBC anymore. But there was one thing that he did feel, though, and that was emptiness. And it was all because the IBC simply doesn't feel like an IBC anymore without Saint Kanye to mix it in with the likes of Abanhfleft and the others.

Lisander wins the first in the IBC

With 56 points among the three, trio Tiago Howells - Guilherme Savin - Eric Hahn made the difference

The opening game of the IBC 25 for Lisander could not have been better! Who woke up early to watch the Stoats on court, did not regret it! The team passed with some reassurance about the Aji-no-Moto team, winning by 95-70, with brilliant performance by the trio of rising stars of Lisander. Guilherme Savin, with 22 points, was the highest scorer in the game, followed by Lisander, Eric Hahn with 19 and Tiago Howells with 15. The last of them even went very close to a Double Double with eight rebounds at the end of the game. match.

The coach Hélder Machado, seeing the result being designed in a favorable way, started to test new possibilities, putting the players of the bench to play, advancing Howells, or playing with three forwards. He tested just about everything.

"The team is playing well, at the same pace, and that's very positive. It gives us a boost of confidence" Machado said, in postmatch interview.

Another team that had a good result the first day was Aristian Republic, which led by Center Asier Laso of Libertas Basketball, won the game against Equestrian States 90-75.
The Principality of Lisander, a sports loving, very highly developed nation in Astyria.

It was media day at lunchtime in San Marco, where various Filindostani and international press went to the press room of the Anetta Coliseum to interview the head of the Samahang Basketbol ng Filindostan (SBF), Charie Pamungkas, who happened the be the co-head of the Silver IBC Committee, the steering committee formed between the basketball governing bodies of Filindostan and Banija, to answer any questions the media had regarding the tournament. At five minutes past twelve, Charie, along with coach Ciot Santos, head coach of the Pula Aguilas, arrived at the press room, and with cameras clicking and flashing, the two sat next to each other in a desk in front of the reporters.

"Good day, everyone." The master of ceremonies opened the program. "Today, the head of the SBF, Ms. Charie, along with Coach Ciot of the Filindostan National Basketball team are here to answer your queries. We'll be only limited to seven to eight questions, as we have more personalities from other participating nations that we will interview after them. So let's begin."

"Maria Tampubolong from the Jakulta Free Press. You submitted 12 venues for the IBC. Any reason behind that, especially with your co-host only submitting five?"

Charie: "Well, technically, we only have eight venues. We have requested every region to submit three arenas, one of which should have at least ten thousand capacity. They were free to submit gymnasiums inside college campuses to provide teams a venue to train. We can actually offer our courts in the barangay halls, but we opted against that for security and safety reasons. We had tertiary venues in case qualifying positions are still not final by the last matchday.

I cannot speak for the Banijan half of the committee, but they may answer any venue-related inquiries on their scheduled media day.
"

"Hiro Matsushita from the Ajian Sport Network. I'm from Group F, and we saw last edition in Newmanistan, a brawl was rumored to be reported between members of the West Phoenicia Scorpions team and fans of the Abanhfleft Rebs. Are you arranging any special measures for the game in Jakulta? And we heard about the slaying of your national football player Enzo Matienzo..."

"Uh, Mister Matsushuta, please ask only one question." The MC interrupted Hiro's second query.

Charie: "Go on Hiro, please complete your question."

"...Thank you, regarding that, we have insider reports that some protesters may disrupt the game at Bandaroon. Same question as the first one."

Charie: "We recognize the threat of violence that may occur between the two sets of fans in Jakultarena. With that, we have already advised the fans of either team to follow the rules we put in place for the game. As such, we have special measures for that one - Fans of each team will enter from separate gates.
Those who are already in the venue that aren't supporters of either team will be placed in the center portion seats of the arena, the West Phoenicia fans will enter through the North Gate and the Fleftic fans will enter the other side at the South Gate. After the game, the West Phoenicians, including fans and players, will exit the arena first and will be heavily escorted by police with buses, then thirty minutes the Fleftic team and players will leave, with the same security applied as with the West Phoenicians. We will do the same on Matchday 7.

For the situation at Bandaroon, we will keep an eye to the arena and place extra security to prevent any disruption of activities in the arena.
"

"From the Berita Filindo. Day 1 of the IBC saw many upsets not only here, but also in Banija, what can you say or comment on this?"

Charie: "Thanks for the questions. It just show that you cannot make mistakes or play badly against anyone in the tournament. We saw high-ranked teams such as Drawkland or Valanora lose on matchday 1, but we know they can bounce back quickly against their next set of opponents. We also hope this partly encourage teams to do better this edition as you never know what to expect on the teams debuting and returning to action."

"Elenita Ellis from the San Marco Tribune. It seems that there are insider information that you want the Quebecois basketball team to change their light jerseys as there are elements in their jerseys that might emanate people to use them. Your thoughts?"

Charie: "Well, we are discussing this with my advisory committee, and on the first game of the Quebecois team against Humaliwo, we decided to schedule their game at Kabanalan and the live media not to cover that game. We're looking to discuss this with them. There's no issue on half of their games in which they wear dark jerseys, but we might discuss with them about the games where they wear that light jerseys of them - especially with Matchday 5 fast approaching."

"Um, sorry guys, we have to cut this one short, just one last question addressed to Coach Ciot." The MC interrupted proceedings once again due to their failure to regulate the timings.

"Todd de Lucas from Filindostani Free Press here. Coach, what are your plans in your next set of games between now and the game against the Quebecois?"

Ciot: "We plan to do the same lineup, same mentality, same plays, but we can give some minutes to our role players, we'll see and it depends on how the first quarters of the games turn out."

"Okay. Charie and Ciot. Thank you for answering those questions. We will have more of these as the days pass by. For now, we'll take a break, and after that, we'll have the Ajian basketball coach and captain in the press room. That's it for now."

After Game 1

Postby Drawkland » Thu Mar 08, 2018 2:39 pm

"Well, at least the red alternates looked good," Jason sighed. The two friends were hanging out at a cafe in Herzegovina city after watching the first match of the IBC for the Net Corps.

"The ball we were playing in them certainly wasn't," Todd rolled his eyes. "You realize that we just lost to an unranked team full of nobody players, right? Largest upset of the tournament and it was on Day 1. We're pretty much burning cash right now."

"Come on man, it's not that bad. It might just be the air in Banija, or something. I dunno."

"Nobody else big lost. Valanora barely lost to Juvencus, and Quebec lost too, I guess. But they're in Filindostan anyway. We're heading towards a rude awakening, man. We're going to have to fight tooth and nail with some nobody squad to make it to the playoffs, where we'll be unceremoniously dumped out again." Todd paused to take a sip of his coffee.

"Man, you're projecting too much. Last IBC we went 9-1. Who says we won't go 9-1 again? We just got the L out of the way early so we'll have better playoff momentum. Duh."

"That's total bull, but alright, man, whatever you say." The two sat in silence for a bit, sipping at their drinks and looking out the window at the Herzegovina City street outside.

Jason suddenly stood up a little straighter and pointed at something outside. "Dude, look! It's those chicks from the plane!" The two had wanted to try and talk to the girls to hit on them after the flight into Istria, but after they deplaned the girls were nowhere to be found. This was the first time they had seen them since.

"No way ..." Todd said, looking out the window, then he saw them too. "Wow, that really is them. What are they doing? Those are some thick coats for this kind of weather."

"Yeah, you're right. They look pretty expensive, y'know, like fashionable. Maybe it's the look they're going for or something. You know how girls go to great lengths for their outfits."

"Maybe, man. Do you want to try and talk to them or what?" Todd asked, eyebrows raised.

"Nahh, man. They're all the way across the street. It'd be weird and stalkerish to approach them from all the way over here."

"Well, looking at them from all the way over here is weird and stalkerish in the first place," Todd pointed out.

Jason shrugged, "If they're around here I'm sure we'll catch a glimpse of them later on, maybe a less awkward situation."

"Maybe so. Maybe we'll even see them at the game tomorrow."

"We better get this W though regardless," Jason said.

"Maybe if Autumn Trallen actually shoots better than 15% from the 3-point line unlike this last game," Todd scoffed.

"Indeed, man. Indeed."

The Second Ring

Part One : Jeez, that hurts...

B10 Championship Game
Farrer University Martlets (FAR) 19 23 21 15 78
Queen's University Golden Gaels (QUE) 23 21 14 19 77

----

"And now, they quickly have to pass off rebound to go. There's only eight seconds left on the game clock. Anderson to Jeon-Keane. Jeon-Keane goes forward, all the way to the mid range. Here comes the Golden Gaels.
"She thinks about shooting a long 2, but sees Tanenbaum, so she instead passes to the right. Who will land the Big 10 championship for three straight or first time in seven years? Longsworth.....open.....it comes off and the Farrer Martlets win their first Big 10 championship in seven years!"

----

The shot missed. Bloody fucking missed.

Unbelievable. Just unbelievable. She thought to herself, wondering at the chance she not only could have scored for a classic buzzer-beater. She knew it was the right choice - she was underachieving all-tournament long - but still it hurt.

Losses like this were meant to disappoint anybody- to say that they were fine with an one-point loss would have been a lie either way for a team this calibre - and Riley knew this very well. Lacking this part back in high school years, the 22-year old has won too many times like that to remember the thrills of being the winner once she came to college. When the wins came, the whole team would celebrate and owe it up to each other. When the loss came, each player would blame herself for their fault, for there was no impeccable player.

Of course, the most dreary part of all was the press conference, something that both head coaches and each school's representative had to go through. For Riley, this was all natural. This was her fourth and final year with the Golden Gaels and the reporters tended to ask less blunt questions to the side that lost, to avoid media conflicts with their charismatic head coach.

Unfortunately, this year's crowd wasn't as generous or even aware of their surroundings. The press, perhaps inspired by what had happened earlier, asked all the wrong questions as the journalists hounded them to no end for the missed shot. The situation could not have gone any messier; not only did the Golden Gaels lose the Big 10 conference championship they had thought they won, but this also ensured their slip from the national rankings (they were ranked number one all year long) and overall the national championship top seed. Given the likelihood of them facing Acadia, Carleton or Saguenay at some point in this tournament, all the disappointment was rather unsurprising on all sides.

After a lot of coach Kayembe talking about how the pressures of being an undefeated team that point was without directly blaming them, it was Riley Jeon-Keane's turn to speak with the media. The start, however, wasn't the smoothest even with her experience talking to the media.

"Um, hello," Riley, like always, poked the mic to see if it was in use. "Feel free to ask your questions. I know it's been a long day and whatnot for all of us, so let's get through them quickly."

Of course, the journalist from the Taegukgi quickly asked the topic she dreaded the most. "What are your thoughts on giving a back pass for the quick three-point buzzer beater to Longsworth?"

"Valid question," Riley quickly nodded. She knew she had to say her wording quickly here. So she just went ahead with what she had in mind, after an exhausting performance where she would sometimes forget half the details (and no, don't say it's because concussions). "For me, I felt that I had made a right decision to give the ball to the person who can score it the best. All day long, I wasn't in the best of my forms and since I knew that Raquel was in the best position to land us the winner, I decided to give her the ball for the final shot."

"So even after a twenty five point, eighteen rebound performance, you refused to acknowledge your own contribution-"

"Yes," Riley sighed, before gently massaging her hair that was too short to make it work anyway. "I was not sold on my chances to land the shot right there, believe it or not! Had I proceeded on my own by carrying the ball or passing back to Jacquie or Yeong Ja, it would not have worked because the range would not have sufficed. Thus, I had to pass the ball to the nearest, fastest option out there."

"But that is not we're asking for. Sometimes such failures can happen. What we are asking for is for you what constitutes as being in the best position to land the winner. Were you that concerned about taking the match on your own hands with the jumper?"

Now was the time to deflect. "We are not a team that's going to rely on a superstar, for basketball is a team sport," Riley decided to respond in a surprisingly confident voice, much to media's surprise. "I wasn't concerned one bit. I actually was hundred percent confident she was going to hit it. And guess what? That's just once that she missed, and I don't think that'll be the case again. So once again, I believe in my girls and my coaches and our chances of winning may even be better now."

"But how would that work when Farrer has already shown Queen's what can be exploited and beaten from-"

"Now," she went on, with a gracious smile. "We are not as nervous about keeping the streak alive. We are just looking to have a good time and the win will come along. The friendships that we get don't simply come from selfish plays or a pure individual dominance, but rather understanding that we have weaknesses and when to give up the ball to someone who can do it better. That's where our strength lies and I'm excited about it."

But was she really looking forward to it? Did she make the right decision to pass rather than shoot? Most importantly of all, was Riley Jeon-Keane ready to finish her career with the second black and red banner?

Yesterday (March 7) Espezah made it's official debut on IBC, facing the experienced Qasden National Team (7th on the rankings) at The Kabaka's Court, in Busukuma, Banija.

The espezin college team had a bad start to the game, demonstrating a lack of chemistry, and wen't to halftime trailing 48-33.

At the half, coach John Woods made changes to team's defence that allowed only 31 points on the last two quarters agains a much more mature side, and saw his team react on the game. Despite that, the effort wasn't enough to get the win.

The national team's highlight was John Fitzpatrick, the 19yo shooting guard from the University of Dunwich, who scored 8 and assisted 13 coming out of the bench, leading the team's late comeback attempt.

The Busukuma Post
Banija's news comes here first!

Matthias Mutebi speech announces that Banija must arrive 'on the world stage' and will claim the right to patrol the Taaru Sea

Image
Matthias Mutebi makes the case for a more aggressive approach in Banijan Foreign Policy

BUSUKUMA- The Kingdom of Banija has never been a major player on the world stage of politics, not due to its size, as it is not a small country with a population of 87 million, but due to our unfortunate status of being an undeveloped country, and quite possibly the poorest country in Atlantian Oceania, we have never had the power to seriously project ourselves as a nation. However, according to the new Katikkiro Matthias Mutebi, and his coalition government, Banija must punch above its weight, and show that the nation has truly arrived on the world stage.

"We have shown what we are capable of in the world of sports!" Thundered Matthias Mutebi. "Why can't we do that in other areas? We didn't win the bid for the last Baptism of Fire, but what did we do? Did we sit down? No! We began to work, and now, we are a well-respected host of international sporting events. Just since that embarrassment of a Baptism of Fire bid where we got 0 votes, we have hosted the World Lacrosse Championships, the last World Bowl, and now the Silver edition of the International Basketball Championships, as well as one-offs like the Globe Cup Final and the Istria Open. We have shown that we are here, we deserve to be here, and we are now a well-respected nation for it.

Why can't we do the same in the realm of politics and foreign relations? Just because we are poorer than our neighbors, doesn't mean we deserve to be disrespected! We are a leading member of the Quebecois Commonwealth of Nations, working side-by-side with nations who share a similar heritage to us. Why do nations like the Equestrian States claim to be the superpower nation of the Glorious Southwest, when we are here to chart our own path? Nothing in this world is handed to us- everything is taken. We must claim our right to equal status among the nations, so that nobody looks down upon us."

The Katikkiro's speech shocked observers, who saw this as a breakaway from decades of tradition of Banijan foreign policy. "Banija has never had an aggressive foreign policy", said Dr. Isaiah Lukto, a professor for International relations at Northern Moravica University. "We have always wanted peace with our neighbors, good foreign relations, and that is what we have gotten. But with the election of somebody like Matthias Mutebi... You never know. Does anyone seriously think it's a good idea to challenge the nation with the military prowess of the Equestrian States?"

When the Katikkiro was asked on whether or not this would mean that he would take on the challenges of patrolling the open seas, he said that not only would the Banijans begin to do so, but he would not coordinate such attempts with the Equestrian States. "The Equestrian States have no God-given right to the open sea, and we have just as much a right to patrol the Taruu Sea as anybody- so we will. We simply don't see a need for coordination as we won't be in their territorial waters. It is our right to show that we are indeed an important nation on the world stage, and we will do so. I would expect the Equestrian States to respect our rights to patrol the international seas."

While the opposition was united in criticism, members of the government were strongly in favor. "The Katikkiro has made a good point- it is our time to take our place on the world stage." Said Leader of the House Uhuru Museveni, also a member of the Defiance Coalition. "Nations don't simply wake up one day and be powerful- it is all intentional. We are a proud, spirited peoples who are united in our mission to do the best for Banija. Is it best for Banija to hold out our hand and ask for help? No! The Government made the right decision, and I believe that instead of respect, this will yield the respect for Banija in the realm of international politics that we have earned in the world of sports, which is undoubtedly a good thing."

It remains to be seen how other nations in the Glorious Southwest and Atlantian Oceania as a whole, particularly the Equestrian States, will respond to the Katikkiro's new declaration.

It was a disastrous first day for the basketball team.

Shooting woes plagued the Golden Hawks in their fairly lopsided loss to Lisander, by 25 points. It wasn't even a close match by their standards, judging by the quarter scores released by Filindostani media. The first quarter opened with a flurry of unnecessary turnovers leading to easy baskets from Guilherme Savin and Tiago Howells. Add the shooting struggles the team had to endure with Teiko going 0-for-5 and only free throws being her source of points, it became a struggle point for coach Katsushi and his crew, who he selected from a college pool. 22-9 after just one quarter.

By the half though, the Ajians' shooting started to improve, with Teiko scoring the first two baskets in the quarter to reduce the gap to 8 points, but the Lisanderians' gutsy defense, or the Ajians' incompetence on keeping the ball on their hands, generated turnover after turnover, and put Teiko's efforts to naught, as they trailed 32-60 in the half.

By the second half of the game, Heider Machado put his reserves to the floor after they had their biggest lead of the game at 42. With coach Katsushi knowing that the game was already a lost cause, he also put his reserves to play. They actually slashed 17 points off the Lisander lead, but were still committing turnovers, and finished with 21 of them, 38 points scored by the Arminhos due to this.

It remains to be seen whether Katsushi will make tweaks to the starting lineup. The more interesting question would be: why didn't he pick players from the club teams?

Great Chota Claims Victory in First Two IBC Games

IBC 25 PRESS ROOM (GCNW) -- The Roundball Roses are off to a roaring start in the IBC, which also marks the first ever international sporting tournament, scoring a surprising 75-62 win over the 13th ranked team in the world, Kita-Hinode.

This is after a 79-78 win, last second win over Omnum, a win that came off of an amazing coast-to-coast, last second buzzer beater by Tsiyi. Great Chota is currently 2-0 and is second in Group B to Vangaziland, who is over them via point differential.

Tsiyi has become the breakout star for Great Chota. His game-winning shot in the first game against Omnum came off of a 27 point effort that also saw him hit 4-of-4 from deep. In the game against Kita-Hinode, he went for 22 points and 10 assists, once again leading the team. This is incredibly surprising considering center Torrance Taylor, who is referred to in Great Chota as "Tank", was supposed to be the best player, bringing his professional experience to a team that needed it.

However, Taylor isn't complaining about the help, especially considering it opened him up for a few highlight dunks, including one that twisted the rim, which was a highlight in his 15 point, 12 rebound, 6 block effort.

"Yeah, dude can play, I gotta say that," Taylor said. "He hits some stuff that I've only ever seen Steph Curry hit before. He does ease things for me up inside."

Tsiyi's mouth has lent him to trouble though, especially against Kita-Hinode, where words were exchanged between him and Kita-Hinode guard Yokyoishi Kureon.

"Man is a good player," Kureon said, before adding that he thought Tsiyi's antics, including a crotch grab after a successful three-pointer went in, were not fit for the IBC.

However, Tsiyi maintains that he's just doing what comes naturally.

"Everyone out here is hatin," he said, a smile spreading across his face. "They hate me. It's not my fault they can't guard me, and I just wanna show that I enjoy this game. Basketball is my life, man, and I think it's only natural to wanna show off what comes first for me."

Other Great Chotan players were supportive of the showoff guard.

"He's always been like that," forward Sequoya Jackson said, coming off a decent 11 point, 9 rebound outing himself. "I remember we were playing a game, not even like a tournament game, but an exhibition, and the guy just starts talking about my mom, and I'm just like, 'did this guy really say this?' You gotta shrug it off with that guy."

Going Forward

Coach Rebecca Strong praised the team's effort, and she too, seem to have an aura of confidence in the post game press conference.

"I think most people in my school didn't believe me when I said I thought I had a team that could win this," she said. "But I saw what we had. I knew we were there. I knew what we had. This is vindication."

Strong, a 37-year old schoolteacher by day, has won over international praise with her style of pressing, all-out basketball that people in her nation have termed "Beckyball." Despite the fact that her teams and her abilities have been good enough to earn a name for her style of play, she seems rather humble.

"Look, I hear this thing," Strong said, a slight grin on her face. "Beckyball? Yeah, my kids at school don't know much about it. I just coach the style I like, and it works out."

"Playing for her this year in the tournament was wonderful," forward Wohali said. "She knows how to maximize talent."

Strong knows though, that there's a long road ahead.

"Can't really look back on these last two games right now. We have so much work to do."

March Madness

In the first two games, Great Chotans have supported the team in large numbers. Around 11 million of the 22 million people who live in Great Chota tuned in for the first game, and that figure apparently had grown to 13 million in their second game. On Twitter, the hashtag #RBR was by far the most popular trending topic in Great Chota.

With all this support, some people in the confederation are wondering if a national league isn't far off.

"I think it'd be great," Mary Clark said, a 28-year old computer technician in Great Tellico, who is also coach for one of the teams in the Great Tellico Metro League, the largest league in Great Chota. "This has usually been second billing behind football, and yeah, football is cool, but basketball costs less, and the health risks are far less as well."

The Great Chotan Council apparently agrees. The Socialist Party, currently the majority in government, has talked about establishing a national league. Still though, some people like the national tournament more, saying that it better reflects the socialist, communal character of the nation rather than a large national league.

One thing both sides can agree on; Great Chotan basketball is on the rise, and it's hard to see what could stop it from getting more popular, especially with the recent showing by Great Chota.
