Reliving the World Junior Hockey Championships
@ Riverside Arena - Calix City, Kebec

Welcome one and all to another Mercedini Sports Daily article, and with the World Cup of Hockey just around the corner, we thought we would revisit one of the nation's biggest ever international tournament triumphs in the sport of hockey, and that was the most recent World Junior Hockey Champioships held in Kebec. The small Mercedinian roster proved to be enough against some of the world's best hockey superpowers, and came through unbeaten and racked up a series of high scoring results, stamping their dominant performance on the tournament.

Mercedinian Opponents and Results
Group W 1-0 Hampton Island
Group W 4-1 Radanax
Group W 4-2 Tomikosan
Group W 6-1 Hampton Island
Group W 7-0 Radanax
Semis W 8-0 Norrehavn
Semis W 11-1 Norrehavn
Final W 7-3 Novaya Zemlya

In an international standard of hockey, it is very rare to see one team score more then five goals in a game, let alone score seven, eight or even eleven goals in a match, especially in a tournament such as this one. Youth hockey typically exacerbates national standards with scouting and youth development programmes put under the spotlight as their prospects and former students perform on the world's biggest stage for everyone to see. We see this domestically in the National Varsity Cup with quality sports colleges and universities regularly overcoming minor colleges by at least double digits, the fast pace nature of the sport means a chasm in quality can easily be exploited by teams higher up the pecking order.

Mercedini had already established themselves as at least a middling hockey playing nation with the main team reaching the knockout rounds in two of their previous outings in the World Cup of Hockey. However, with the rise of other nations combined with the stagnation of the national team plus the recent disappointing results of domestic teams for the Mercedinian Super League in the Hockey Champions League, meant that hockey fans needed something to raise their spirits going into another cycle of hockey-playing action.

Mercedini are quickly becoming known for their smaller than life hockey rosters, with only two lines in defence and attack complimenting the three choices of goalkeepers available to the management and coaches. The Junior Kingfishers opened their account with a narrow 1-0 opening day win against Hampton Island, it was a close match with a late third period winner saving the say for the Mercedinians. Following that, Mercedini made life much more comfortable for themselves with a 4-1 victory over Radanax, who had close ties with the hosts of the tournament. Mercedini sat top of the table and put plenty of daylight between themselves and the chasing pack with a 4-2 win over Tomikosan, with their opponents giving a good account of themselves, challenging the Mercedinian goal on multiple occasions and making the Mercedinian players work for their result, scoring twice before the Junior Kingfishers eventually ran away with the win.

With a sizable contingency, Mercedini went ahead and wrapped up the group stage in convincing fashion with resounding 6-1 and 7-0 wins against Hampton Island and Radanax respectively, with both teams diverging from their previous performances. Unsurprisingly, Mercedini topped the group with five wins in five, twenty two goals for and only four goals against, giving them an astronomical goal difference of +18.

Thanks to their group stage performances, Mercedini qualified for the knockout rounds and claimed the one and only ticket straight to the semi finals, meaning they skipped the notoriously tricky quarter final round. They awaited the winners of the quarter final match and drew Norrehavn in a best of three semi final bout to decide who would fly their flag in the grand final, and none of the fans were expecting what came next. A two game demolition job, with twenty goals scored (nineteen of those scored by the same team) which was the biggest ever goal haul for a team in the tournament, and the first ever 10+ goal haul in a single match for any Mercedinian hockey national team. It truly was a one sided affair which saw the Junior Kingfishers cruise through to their first ever final.

WJHC Final: Novaya Zemlya vs. Mercedini

FINAL
WJHC

NOVAYA ZEMLYA 3 - 7 MERCEDINI
(2-2) (0-1) (1-4)

Calix City, Kebec
In the final, it was more of the sam as the goals rained down onto the Kebecois side where they were treated to a ten-goal thriller which ultimately went the way of the Mercedinians, but not after a closely fought match between two teams who had earned their way the WJHC final. The free scoring Mercedinian side scored first in the opening five minutes, giving the travelling Mercedinian contingency something to cheer about on their big day out. However, the mood changed as two quick fire power play goals from Novaya saw Mercedini fall behind for the first time in the tournament, but they fought back to level the score line just before the horn blew for the end of the period. Novaya had a comprehensive hockey programme for their young players and were rewarded with their final appearance, but a fairly timid second period was capped off by a Mercedinian slap shot from inside the final third, giving Mercedini the lead over again, something which they would let slip again.

In the end, the Junior Kingfishers ran away with the match as fatigue and tactics set in, four goals from the Mercedinians could only be counteracted by a lone Novaya goal in the third and final period. The score line didn't seem like an accurate reflection of the , but Mercedin lifted their first ever hockey trophy with a 7-3 win in Kebec's Calix City to bring home what turned out to be one of two youth trophies won by the nation last year. We just hope the current batch of national team players can conjure up similar performances in the upcoming World Cup of Hockey.

Presents

'The IBEX'
NEU ENGOLLON NATIONAL HOCKEY TEAM:

The Ibex and hockey in Neu Engollon
There is one professional hockey league in Neu Engollon, the NEHL, with an associated minor league. There is also a strong collegiate tradition in the sport, run by NECA (Neu Engollian Collegiate Association) and the NEHL pull their players from graduates of these top schools along with minor league players. The Ibex are all pulled from the NEHL, or Neu Engollian nationals playing in equivalent foreign leagues. Andre Manon and Ernst Volkzein recently retired from playing for both the Ibex and the NEHL and are in their third year of having the management helm of the Ibex. With the gold won during the last Junior World Cup, there is a lot of hope for the future of Neu Engollian hockey that they may get back to the glory of previous years and actually be able to compete on the same level as the top 10 multiversal teams.

Head Coach: Andre Manon

What The Hell Is Going On (aka The TDS QnE Guide to the 35th World Cup of Hockey)

So this came as a massive shock. After we said we wouldn't do it, saying we'd miss a tournament to concentrate on the Winter Olympics and to fix our problems for the 36th edition, we end up going to the 35th edition. I'm not complaining, by the way, I just thought it was surprising. But then again, maybe it was the plan all along or maybe it was an attempt to keep us high in the rankings. Either way, it gives me a reason to do something I've been thinking over these past couple of months. Something new, something different. Instead of recapping our last WCoH performance (because no one still wants to hear about it), I'm going into what I think our two biggest problems at the moment are. As always, if you agree or disagree, let me know.

The first complaint is that our tactics, while somewhat revolutionary at the time, are pretty much stale. At first, there was a bit of confusion over Madgwick's "specific defending" idea, where there's a specific left and right defenceman. Sort of like how there are left and right backs in soccer. However, it seemed to have worked wonders, as a specified defenceman on each side of the ice means there'll always be some way of cutting down their chances or scoring a goal. As a result, it kind of spread to the other national teams like the Lady Ice-a-phants and the Junior Ice-a-phants. Hell, other national sides seem to have adopted this approach, with the most well-known examples being our maybe rivals in Anthor. However, that spread is also a curse and, as a result, everyone knows the ins and outs of it. Maybe sprucing it up a bit, having the same types of defencemen on a line would help fix the problem.

And my second complaint is that we need some young blood brought in. Toni was a great goalie but he was getting on a bit and seemed past his prime in some places. Same goes with Mike Cruickshank and Akio Shimasaki playing well into their mid-late 30s. And soon it'll be time for George Lincoln to hang up his skates as he's already in his mid 30s and has moments where it seems like he's slowing down. That being said, Kasputin's still showing as much talent as he did a decade a go (plenty for those who are wondering), Michael Madgwick was still at the top of his game throughout his 25-year-long career and I seem to remember the last player from the inaugural ENIHL (Lawrence "Larry" Kaplinsky) playing up until the mid-80s and still performing quite well. Maybe I'm overthinking it but it would still help out a little bit.

Either way, let's not complain about one of the most legendary ice hockey players and his coaching tactics and instead concentrate on the 35th World Cup of Hockey. It's held in the Free Republics, although sadly that's the only real information I've found so far. That and the groups, the schedule and what the Ro16/QF/SF/Final and 3PPO would be like. No real information about who'll be playing where or anything like that. Although chances are that I'll get some more info about that and I should update by the time I post my next article. Also, a slight concern is that, again, Lucas Madgwick will be missing the tournament due to that hernia and, as a result, Stacy Saunders has been brought in; for a change he's playing on the first line whereas Franncy Solano's been brought down to the second but, as the saying goes, "It's a bold strategy, let's see if it pays off for them". Alright, I'll stop yammering now and go into our Group 2 opponents.

And first up, we have Abanhfleft. We played them at the last World Cup of Hockey, where they managed to beat us 4-3 in OT. Not just that but they topped the group, meaning we had to settle for second place. Afterwards, they were up against New Danican in a game they easily won, 6-2. However, they were up against Vilita and Turori, who had beaten the then-reigning champions Cosumar 3-2. And, indeed, the Ice Cat Things reigned surpreme in this encounter, thanks to a 4-2 victory. Granted V&T would go on to win the damn thing so if they lost then there would've been some explaining to do. Either way, Abanhfleft are back and hoping to do just as well as they did last time.

Image
Lucas Madgwick, who'll be missing the
tournament as he recovers from a hernia
surgery. Get well soon.
Afterwards, we have Kebec, an up and coming nation who recently hosted the Odin Invitational Cup we were invited to, winning nearly all of their group games (their sole defeat being a 2-0 loss to the Vakolicci Haven and Celeria; more on them later) and, eventually, the tournament. They were also at the Winter Olympics, where they finished runners-up behind Ethane, although their sole loss came from Kosovakia who failed to make it through to the next round. However, they were up against Taracy and, much to their dismay, ended up going out in the Round of 32 following a 2-1 defeat. They were also at the last couple of tournaments, finishing dead last in their group back when they debuted in Anthor (with their sole win being a 2-0 victory over eventual tourney champions Cosumar) but making a massive improvement at the following competition in Savojarna, finishing second in their group behind Esparmuran but getting knocked out in the Round of 16 by eventual bronze medallists Novaya Zemlya. So, much like Abanhfleft, plenty of good momentum from the last tournament that they want to keep up.

Now that our main challengers are out of the way after the off day, let's get into the rest of the group. The unranked teams. And to start off, we've got Vakolicci Haven and Celeria. I think they were at the 31st World Cup of Hockey, where they lost all of their games and only scored three goals (coincidentally the same number of goals we conceded during our group stage run, where we won all of our games), but I'm not sure if that was the same team, VH&C is a successor team or if they're a different team altogether. And they were also at the Odin Invitational, where they beat the hosts (and winners) Kebec 2-0, drew 3-3 with Ontorisa and lost 2-0 to Northwest Kalactin, resulting in a joint second placed finish but going out of the tournament anyway due to goal difference. And then there was their recent Winter Olympics performance. They finished second in Group D with two wins and their sole loss coming from group winners Britonisea; even then, it was a very narrow 1-0 loss. After a 2-1 shoot-out win against the Teremaran Unified Team following a 1-1 draw in the Round of 32 and a 3-2 win against us in the Round of 16, they were up against Nuovo Juvenucus in the quarter-finals. Sadly luck wasn't on their side then as they went down 1-0. Naturally they'll be hoping to do as well here as they did there but, since we're now allowed to use brute strength and drop the gloves, I'm sure that'll hit a snag at some point.

And then we've got Huri de Wintre. And I don't really know a whole much about these guys. No idea who's playing for them, no idea how popular ice hockey is in their nation, no idea on their tactics, nothing. So, barring some freak circumstances, this should result in an easy win. Although I'm not ruling out this information being available at a later date but, even then, it'll probably be too late. Afterwards we've got Melbergia to round things off but, since instead of copying and pasting what I wrote about HdW, I decided to put it on the same paragraph. Since this is double round robin, we play Abanhfleft again after the first game against Melbergia but I'm sure we all know how this sort of thing works.

So where do I think we'll come? I know we'll definitely make it through, as we're apparently ranked first in the world despite our recent poor performances; maybe the fact that we managed to beat Valanora in the quarter-finals at the last tournament helped us out a bit. And although I predict us topping the group I won't say we'll be sweeping our group; a nice feat I'm sure but I doubt it would happen, so expect a couple of draws or maybe a loss. Abanhfleft would probably be joining us, although I wouldn't rule out a surprise appearance by Kebec instead. Vakolicci Haven and Celeria might be pushing it a little but considering how well they did at the Winter Olympics I wouldn't put it past them. Melbergia and Huri de Wintre are definitely out of the running.

Anyone else worth mentioning? Yes. The reigning champions, Vilita and Turori, are in Group 6 alongside Neu Engollon and Lorenthia, as well as Tomure, the Sherpa Empire and the People's Republic of Xabia. Valanora, or the Calcuttas to you and me and pretty much every ice hockey fan who doesn't read this, are in Group 4 alongside Ko-oren (who are making their first WCoH appearance in quite a while), the Alpine Union, the Bjornoya Islands, Kita-Hinode and Central Shaneville. The hosts are, obviously, in Group 1 alongside Anthor, Cosneolta, South Covello (aka The Nation Formerly Known as Gregoryisgodistan) and a couple of unknowns called Austrakia and Cassadaigua. And, finally, there's Novaya Zemlya, ranked second, down in Group 8, alongside the Natanians and Nosts, Qasden and Northwest Kalactin, as well as North Prarie and Tzerinn. There are other teams I could talk about but I don't want to make this paragraph sound like a whole bunch of filler.

Is that everything? Yes it is, from the looks of it. While I'm sure I missed a couple of things, I reckon I could get a new article up if I can remember what they are or if anyone tells me them. As for now, I'm going to sit back, get my stuff and either enjoy some quality ice hockey or hope we stop sucking as bad as we have been doing recently. I recommend you guys do the same.

Lisander National Ice Hockey Team

About the team
The structure of this team is the team of the best of the regular season of LNH, National League. Most of these players will return to their teams, still thinking about the Harmin Cup.

The first lineup has three players from HC Dalena, including the 2x Goalkeeper of the Year and Captain of both his team and national team, Jean-Luc Anger. The defensive line has Brandon Montagne, also of the HCD, along with Asier Díez, young revelation of HC Universitario. But Zane Huddleston, also of HCD, and Sora Necchi, of HC Sparta, are on the same level and can replace them at any time. The offensive line has Mark Horsfall of HCU, Fernando Simoniti of HCD and Blake Lynton of Sparta. However, no one there has an absolute right to the position because Tim Bloxham (Sparta), Daniel Schiller (Blues), Hyacinthus Larue (Wolves), Fernando Marino (Bats) and James Allegro (HCD) also intend to play a lot. Considering the interests of Coach Andreas Bohinc, that wants to test a lot of people, it is likely that all of them play a lot.

The Principality of Lisander, a sports loving, very highly developed nation in Astyria.
Disappointing people and missing deadlines since 2013.

The Hinodejin line-up mostly returns, the belief that they might've struck gold last time around being the main reason for that. The rising star of Shoma Taroshima might have to do with this, the young player being responsible for the Musketeers' first-ever HHC title.

Gergarisches-Pass
Your guide to everything about Gergary!

Have you been into one of the coldest nations in Esportiva? If not, then look no further, as I will provide you with a guide that will help you adapt and acclimate quickly with our beloved Gergarians.

Bevezetes (Introduction)

Gergary (alternate name: Deutschmagyarland) is an island-nation located in northern Esportiva. It is located south of Brenecia, west of Buyan, and east of Soltsteed. The capital city of Ingbert-Borbely is landlocked, and is the seat of government in the country. The nation is not known to be strong economically, however, they can be proud that they can produce their own goods and services, and rarely imports products from other countries. People living in Gergary are called Deutsch-magyar locally, or Gergarian abroad.

The nation is divided into three main regions. The western to south-western part of the region is called Strasseregion, mostly inhabited by Deutsch people. The most famous city in this region is Steinigestrasse, known for its tennis clubs, one for hardcourt and one for grass. This is also where the national football stadium is located. The second region, which encompasses the north to north-east of the nation, is the Nagy region, mostly inhabited by Magyar people. The famous city here is Pas, known by its strong indoor sports teams of ice hockey, volleyball, and basketball. Here you can locate the national arena used for all three indoor sports - the Gergary nemzeti arena. The last region is the Gemischtvegyes region, which consists of 55 percent Deutsch and 45 percent Magyar. This includes Ingbert-Borbely and the mostly known cities of Balogs, Szekely, and Wiesenblume. This region occupies the eastern to south-eastern part of the nation.

The national sport of Gergary is ice hockey, but the government, led by Chancellor Domonkos Virag, allots equal budgets to all their sports via the Deutschmagyarland Sportkomisssion (DMLSK). Ever time the Virag government increases their budget, other branches of sports can also benefit from the increase.
The result? A nation which is probably jack of all trades, but mediocre in all of them.

Onto the next part of this guide: geography, and the city of Ingbert-Borbely.

Hockey is the national sport of Novaya Zemlya and the only sport that is played professionally in the country. This tournament will be Novaya Zemlya's 11th WCoH appearance. The team has qualified for the knockout rounds in the last eight tournaments, with two 3rd place and two 4th place finishes as their biggest accomplishments.

Following a disappointing octofinals exit against Natanians and Nosts in WCoH 33, the Novozemlyan team bounced back and had a good run at the 34th WCoH in Savojarna, finishing atop of group H with a 5-0-0 record. The team won two close-fought playoff battles against Kebec and Anthor before bowing out to eventual champions Vilita and Turori in the semifinals. The third-place matchup against Elejamie featured two teams that reportedly had partied hard the night before and it showed on the ice. The Novozemlyans eventually won 10-6 and captured third place, in a wild game that will go down in WCoH history as one of the worst displays of poor defensive play and sloppy goaltending at both ends.

Novaya Zemlya plays a fast-paced, offensive brand of hockey. Head coach Bogdan Bobr - a living legend in Novaya Zemlya - likes to roll his lines and spread out the talent, and all lines can be expected to contribute offensively, although the first line with superstar center Valeri Kalagin is expected to lead the way. The Novozemlyans generally play a clean game. Fighting is not really a part of Novozemlyan hockey culture. (The occasional spearing, two-handed slash or sucker punch however, are - defenseman Fyodor Ryzhkov especially is known to have a short fuse - but Bobr generally keeps his team on a short leash.)

Anton Lopatin is expected to start every game except Matchday 5 against North Prarie, in which Iosif Bezukladnikov will start.

A. Alenichev - D. Shelagin

The team will play its group stage home games at Ogromny Dom in Belushya Guba, the Novozemlyan capital. Ogromny Dom ('Enormous House') holds 18,220 spectators, which makes it the biggest arena in the country. Regular tenants at the Dom include Stolitsa Arktiki (NZEL) and Znamya Belushya Guba (NZ Division II). The rink was built 30 years ago and lacks any kind of modern amenities, but you can expect stands to be packed with loud fans which will provide a great atmosphere for games.

2,000 tickets per game will be reserved for visiting fans. Due to repeated violence in the stands at local Belushya Guba derbies in the NZEL, the away fans section is fully caged in to ensure visitors a safe game experience. If you are unable to get tickets, games will also be broadcasted on big screens outside the arena and at the Central Square downtown. Visitors can expect a pleasant stay in Belushya Guba, people are generally friendly and most Belushyans are knowledgeable hockey fans. However, the Dom is located in a somewhat rough part of town and even though local police will be out in full force to guarantee your safety, you are advised to avoid wearing opposing team colors after games, at least in case of a Novozemlyan loss.

Gzejjer 1–3 Tobiasia
Hannah Alwasco ‘22
Mark Hudmavker ‘24
Unknown Gzejjerian ‘47
Edgar Lane ‘59

The Tobiasian team thoroughly defeated Gzejjer, a low ranked unknown team to the World Cup. Two initial strikes by Alwasco and captain Hudmavker led the Tobiasians ahead early on in the match, and even though a consolation shot was scored by Gzejjer, Edgar Lane put the nail in the coffin of a throughly entertaining match at Deanbridge Park Ice Arena (capacity 28,000).

The real shocker came by Siovanija and Teusland and their 1-0 defeat of the Royal Republic of Quebec, ranked 8th in the world.

Media Kit for Journalists: Savojar Hockey National Team

Savojarna plays a game that is mostly depending on tactical discipline and puck possession. While the Savojars do value a good deflection or rebound goal, and certainly have many players who can do such things, they usually prefer a pass to a shot from a desperate position hoping for a lucky bounce. Their players think fast rather than move exceptionally fast (but they are not slow either!), with a few exceptions on the attack since the coaching changed and the team is a bit more aggressive. While they don't have to hide from anyone, they are usually not physically superior.

In terms of tactics, they play an aggressive forechecking with one or two men, trying to force puck losses, and drop back to their own blue line once the opponent has reached the neutral zone. They attempt to keep the opponent away from their own side, and defend usually quite solid. On the attack, Savojarna's top lines work with a lot of passing and cycling the puck to find an open lane while the third and fourth line play deeper and with more drive to the net. Especially the fourth line often crowds the slot, while the third is more likely to go deep and play behind the net. Usually, the Savojars play with 13 forwards and 7 defenders. The women's team employs significantly more offensive tactics and relies more on passing the puck around due to the less physical nature of women's hockey.

Goalkeeper order: Hoyman - Strakhov - Kerjanen, unless indicated otherwise.

Special Teams:
The Savojar team plays a powerplay focused mainly on shooting from the point and the circle. The two defenders play both in the area between the blue line and the top of the circle, but occasionally advance to the circle. The winger on the side of the puck moves to the circle to be open and get a shot off, the other winger moves towards the goal to assist the center in screening and opening shooting lanes. The center remains in front of the goal. In penalty killing, Savojarna lets the opponent play around the boards, but intervenes quickly if the puck moves inside the box. They play a PK with relatively little pressure.

PP1: Kristiansen - Toranen - Stefansson - Andersson - Bryzhnev
PP2: Falborg - Jarnström - Söderberg - Zagulin - Jaskinen
PK1: Asgeirsson - Falborg - Andersson - Jaskinen
PK2: Yarchenko - Glukov - Rasnikov - Neronen

Style codes:
HYB = Hybrid goaltender. Uses a sensible mixture of butterfly and standup styles. Average likelihood of rebounds.
BFY = Butterfly goaltender. Quickly drops into butterfly stance to make saves. Will concede more rebounds, but is harder to beat low.
DFD = Defensive defender. Sticks to the blue line and works a lot in backchecking. Blocks shots, checks and is hard to get past.
TWD = Two-way defender. Dangerous from the point and the top of the circle, but focuses on backchecking. Also good at breakouts.
OFD = Offensive defender. Usually a good shooter and passer, and will more frequently move deep in offensive play. Still is a defender though.
TWA = Two-way attacker. A forward who will be quick to fall back if the team loses the puck, and prevents odd-man rush opportunities.
PWF = Power forward. A forward who plays with strength in everything he does, but also relies on skill. The most allround forwards on the team.
SNP = Sniper. A forward who will score more goals than assists. His job is simply to put the puck in the back of the net from every position.
PLM = Playmaker. A forward who has good overview and passing, and will score more assists than goals. His job is to create chances for the team.
GRN = Grinder. A forward using his body to annoy the opponent, get or keep the puck and push it into the goal. Especially good at forechecking.

Who will...
Score goals? Rasnikov, Bryzhnev, Simonen and Stefansson are top league scorers. From the defenders, all OFD as well as Glukov may score. Glukov is a good shooter, and will use that skill regularly. The OFD may also move forward and shoot from the circle occasionally.

Amaze us all? If skill explosions and wonderful dekes are your thing, have an eye on Bryzhnev and Gulbrandsson. That brilliant cross-crease pass that leaves the teammate with an open net? Hjalmarsson and to a lesser extent Simonen got you covered. Finally, Hoyman guarantees spectacle in net.

Get into a brawl? Savojars are somewhat opposed to one-on-one brawls due to their huge sense of community. While the warrior culture is strong among the team, chances are that you'll get jumped by three at once if you hurt someone. All of the team know how to shove, push and wrestle you down (and also punch, if needed) shall you hurt their linemates. Gränlund is known to be a somewhat aggressive, physical player with a great likelihood to provoke goalkeepers with late slashes, push around opponents after the whistle and knows most dirty tricks in front of the goal.

Knock you out? Heavyweights of the team are Asgeirsson (197 cm/105 kg) and Yarchenko (194 cm/99 kg). Despite his size, Toranen (183 cm/80 kg) is known for his spectacular hip checks that sent many Savojar wingers to the ice face first. In the front, Juha Neronen is known for occasionally grinding people into the boards, and Jacob Andersson has pushed many defenders off balance in front of the net.

Miss curfew? Savojars love a good drink, and while they have stopped doing the tradition of sacrificial mead-drinking before game days, they still practice it two days before (to sleep off the hangover). In this tradition, players are expected to prove their strength before the Gods by drinking large amounts of mead. The best at this discipline tend to be Strakhov, Jaskinen and Rantanen. Gudbrandsson is a very attractive guy who likes going out, and most likely to get to know the female players of other teams a bit better. Similar is said about Stefansson, but he never seems to find anyone meeting his standards... (OOC: Ville Stefansson is secretly gay and you are open to RP on that. However, given the usual issues of discrimination in hockey environments, only his best friends on the team know. I don't know if I'll bring that up in RP, but the possibility exists and if you want to collaborate on that, be it by outrage or endorsement, feel free.)

Transfer abroad? Generally, players from Army teams (CASK, ASK, Torpedo, Aviator) are hard to get away from their team, but sometimes do if the offer is good. Similarly, Dynamo (the police team) is not extremely fond of losing players. But then again, since the 1990s players have enough rights to enable transfer of everyone.

STELBURGER ZEITUNG

LATE EDITION -- SPORTS

'JUBILATION'

In a miraculous upset at the Stelburg Eispalast, the hockey team from Siovanija and Teusland opened up their World Cup of Hockey campaign with a 1-0 victory over world number 8 the Royal Kingdom of Quebec.

The Eispalast was filled to the brim with fans nervously awaiting the first match of the campaign, in a game the Goldhorns were heavily expected to lose. Captain Gunter Pfenning stated before the match “Look, we know they are a great team and we just want to go out and show that we can play hockey too and give them a challenge.” It’s fair to say the fans agreed with his view as well, with one fan telling the Zeitung that “One goal would be our main hope tonight.” Coach Aaron Kuhn provided another view, saying “We all know Quebec are a great side, and it’s going to be hard for us tonight. But I always have faith in my players, and I know that if we play as good as I know we can, of course we have a shot tonight.” The Stelburg Eispalast rocked with cheers as the Goldhorns took the ice, and the nation awaited puck drop.

The anthems out of the way, the referee dropped the puck to begin the match. Early on it appeared as if Quebec might dominate the game, and they had lots of pressure in the offensive zone. A shot from a Quebecois right winger was just stopped by the blocker of Ruslan Ivanov, and he pounced on the rebound before anyone else could get to it. The crowd did their very best to get the Goldhorns into the game, but through the first period it was all Quebec.

Another great opportunity for the visitors came on the power play. Timo Horn was sent to the box for high-sticking with 8 minutes left in the period, and the Goldhorns had to kill off the all-important 2 minutes. Quebec wasted the first minute of the powerplay in their own zone after being stopped on entry, but the second minute was quite nerve-wracking for fans of the Goldhorns. A defender’s slapshot was blocked by Gregor Herder, but the puck rolled to a Quebecois winger open at the hash marks. He rifled a wrist shot at the top corner, but Ivanov’s stick just got a piece of it and deflected it out of play. The Goldhorns survived the initial onslaught in the first period, taking to the dressing room in a 0-0 tie, but needed to play much better for any hope of winning the match.
The second period started off much more evenly, with the Goldhorns being more willing to play with physicality, and using their speed to attempt to take control of the game. Despite being outplayed in the first period, Ruslan Ivanov had kept the team in the game and allowed them to come out for the second with hope. Bojidar Ivankov made a big hip-check along the boards which drew loud cheers from the home crowd, and picked the puck up and passed off to Kosyo Varbanov. Varbanov crossed the blue line and dropped the puck for Gunter Pfenning. The captain’s one-time effort, however, was stopped by the goalie and Quebec recovered the puck for a rush of their own. A good shot here was again stopped by Ivanov, and the game grew increasingly open with several good opportunities for both sides in a short period.

The best opportunity of the period came to the Goldhorns on the power-play. Constantly growing in confidence throughout the game, it was Gero Radulov who was tripped in the offensive zone, sending the home side to their first power-play of the night. Setting up off the draw, Jorg Gottschall blasted a shot that hit the crossbar and fell out front to Wolfram Spiegel, but he could not bury the chance. The Eispalast collectively groaned as Quebec cleared the puck and the power-play was all over. Again the horn sounded with a score of 0-0, and it would be up to both teams to finish the job in the third period.

Both sides came out flying for the third period, and the match was full of excitement. Supporters of the Goldhorns were in full force as well, jumping up and down, literally shaking the building while loudly chanting for the Goldhorns. Both Ruslan Ivanov and the Quebec goaltender traded big saves in the first period, including Gunter Pfenning being stopped on a breakaway and Ivanov denying a Quebec winger at the post. As the minutes ticked on, and overtime loomed, both sides knew that likely the first goal would win the match.

Finally, with just 6 minutes left in the game, the advantage went to the Goldhorns. Fabian Auer made a pass to Edgar Seckbach, who found Razvigor Tsvetanov at the centre line. Tsvetanov’s saucer pass found Alex Schnyder perfectly open at the Quebec blue line. Managing to stay onside, Schynder found nothing between him and the goaltender. Using his great speed and hands, he pulled the puck to his right as he came in, before switching at the last second and putting a backhand shot over the goaltender into the net. A breakaway goal at 14:22 of the third period gave the Goldhorns an unthinkable lead over the Royal Kingdom of Quebec.

Playing on nothing but adrenaline in the final minutes of the brilliant game, the Goldhorns halted any attempt to level the score. When pucks did get through, of course Ruslan Ivanov was right there stopping them. Just 56 seconds were on the clock when Ivanov covered up for a face-off, and the dramatic final minute began. Quebec won the faceoff back to the point, and with the goalie out held a 6-on-5 advantage. Going d-man to d-man, the puck eventually went to a Quebec winger wide open on the right side. Ivanov tipped it aside with his blocker, denying a following wrap-around attempt as well. Just 23 seconds were left when Fabian Auer picked up the puck, and he attempted to hold it in the Goldhorns zone, but was pressured hard and lost the puck behind his own net. The pass out front fell to an open man again, but his shot was deflected out by the stick of Jorg Gottschall. On the ensuing face-off, the Goldhorns won the puck back and got the puck out of the zone in a clearance attempt. With just 9 seconds on the clock now, Quebec attempted one last offensive chance but could not get into the Goldhorn’s zone. Finally the buzzer rang to signal the end of the game, and the Goldhorns filled onto the ice to congratulate goaltender Ruslan Ivanov for his stellar play.

Ivanov made 51 saves in the shut-out, many coming in the first period. Speaking to the media after the game, he said “Some games you’re going to stop everything and you just have that feeling. Tonight I knew that, so I told the boys if they get one goal we’re going to win.” Aaron Kuhn heaped praise upon his star goalie, saying “We all know that’s the type of performance Ruslan’s capable of, and this room has total confidence in him”.

Fans partied long into the night on the streets around the Stelburg Eispalast, waving flags and singing patriotic songs. Next up for the Goldhorns in their qualifying campaign is Gergary, who lost 7-0 to Banija in their opener. Still, the match will be tough for the Goldhorns, as will the remainder of qualifying. The 1-0 upset over Quebec is, however, a great start.

Notes: Ruslan Ivanov will follow up on his 51-save shutout with the start against Gergary...Zhelyasko Ivanov served as the 7th defender, but is expected to be replaced by Koloman Schwarzman against Gergary….Razvigor Tsvetanov and Edgar Seckbach were credited with assists on Schynder’s game winning goal….Ventseslav Valchev, Gunter Burchardt and Koloman Schwarzman were healthy scratches against Quebec....The match against Gergary will be away, but will be shown live at the Eispalast for free for all fans.

Postby The Sherpa Empire » Thu Mar 08, 2018 1:19 pm

The Sherpa national hockey team got off to a rough start, losing 3-1 to Lorenthia. The coaches urged the players not to dwell on it, and to focus on winning when they got home to the Sherpa Empire for game 2. No such luck. They lost their first home game 2-0.

"Home," they called it. Lukla-Namche wasn't home for Shuang Gao and he didn't really like playing there. The high elevation left him short of breath, reducing his endurance on the ice. When the team went to Lorenthia, he was fine. When they came "home" to Lukla-Namche, he was back to gasping for breath. He had the same problem during the regular IHL season when he played in Lukla-Namche or Thimphu. The Himalayan IHL teams always had an advantage playing at home because they were used to the altitude, and many of their players had a genetic advantage due to their ancestry. (It was politically incorrect to talk too much about the genetic element, and the Sherpa Empire chose players for its national teams based on their record in the domestic sports leagues, without favoring highlanders -- but there were genetic reasons why Sherpa and Tibetan players had an advantage over the Chinese, Aryans, Arabs, etc., etc.)

Shuang Gao had also discovered that there were no limousines in Lukla-Namche because the steep and winding streets were too difficult for them to navigate safely, but that was only a minor annoyance. The real problem was more personal.

He wasn't bothered that Lukla-Namche was the seat of the national government, or that it was full of Sherpas, Tibetans, and Nepalis. He had a healthy dose of national pride, and he had never involved himself with any of the Empire's ethnic squabbles. There were some people in his native Xiamen who chafed under Sherpa rule, but Gao didn't dwell on such things. The Sherpas had not stopped him from following his dream to play in the IHL, or from finding a beautiful wife -- but that was the real problem with coming to Lukla-Namche: His wife's family from a previous marriage lived in Namche.

While Shuang Gao was trying to rest and catch his breath and prepare mentally for his next game, his wife and stepdaughters were arguing and pestering him non-stop. The younger stepdaughter, Changjun, didn't want to be there. She lived with her father and would have preferred to stay home with him. She spent most of the time staring at her phone, playing with some kind of language-learning app, which she was trying to use to teach herself English. When anyone disturbed her from her studies, she was grouchy. If Shuang Gao had his way, he would have just left her alone and let her practice her English vocabulary. Unfortunately, Gao's wife insisted on nagging Changjun to be more sociable, straighten her clothes, fix her hair, etc.

Meanwhile, the older stepdaughter, Changyi, went on at great length about how terrible it had been staying at her father's house while Gao and his wife were away in Lorenthia. Apparently, her father had rushed her getting ready when they went out for dinner, and told her she couldn't use skin-lightening cream in his bathroom. Shuang Gao really didn't care. He thought skin-lightening cream was silly anyway. He just wanted them all to shut up and let him think.

Vangazi Vow To Improve After Costly Losses

Vannish National Team Captain, Johnny Jansson missed games 1 and 2 with a wrist injury. His absence hurt his team which lost game one 1-0 to Flekkefjord. Jansson would say, "This was a game I could have made an impact on. The only hope is that we can make up ground against those two teams as the season wears on. We'll also get to play them again, so we need to prepare for the rematch."

Defenseman Jelena Kostelac didn't want to use the loss of their Captain as an excuse. The female who plays most of her minutes from the bench said, "We need to fight even without our top guys. Those were two games which could have helped us establish ourselves. Instead, we sat back."

Vangaziland lost game two to Azirethia, 4-3. The Vangazi tried staying in it, but fell short by a lone goal once again.

"Of course our best player might have made a difference", said Max Faltskog. The Left Winger was moved into the first line to cover for Jansson. He therefore received most of the brunt for the cold streak. He managed one goal but had no assists in the two game stretch. The Vangazi have looked stagnant, not moving the puck well. Defense tends to clear the puck before going for a more strategic advancement.

The result is sloppy play where Vangazi end up chasing pucks and opponents. That being considered, the team lost both games by single goals. They even stayed with Azirethia's four goals.

"I can't go back in time and not get injured", said Jansson. "But I'm here now. The wrist is feeling flexible. I'm going to wrap it up and give the game a go. Let's see how my shot is feeling. I can still help move the offense." After another question or two, Jansson added, "The team needs me, so I'll play. It feels strong, so I'm not worried."

Hazim Krajnc is leading the Vannish team in scoring, with 2 goals. Both fell in game 2, with the Esportivan born and raised player keeping Vangaziland in the game. "I think we still have the chance to win some games this year", said Krajnc. "Let's go match by match. Maybe we'll be in position to make a run towards the end."

Jermaine Ivory scored the team's 4th goal of the first two matches. It came from a Krajnc pass, met with an Ivory slapshot. The puck rocketed over the keeper's shoulder. It was the most explosive shot of the short Vannish season thus far.

6'4 Jaroslav Jamir has spent the most time in the penalty box. "At this point, Jaroslav is almost hurting the team", said Head Coach Isaac Ivarrson. "But we need his intensity. He has to ride the line and hopefully be less sloppy in the future."

The Vannish team isn't expected to go far, but the program would love to snag as many points as they could during their inaugural season.

That train horn was sure going off a lot. North Prarie had already scored 6 times at their WCoH matches. Max Powers-Kane was excelling, scoring a great goal in the 2nd game. He got a pass from Kyle Biros and put it into the top-left corner from the hard right side of the rink. The crowd at Familysave Arena went crazy. The NP Hockey ultras, also known as the Lake Bandits, lit smoke bombs and launched into the "Let's go NP" chant between riffs in Seven Nation Army, the rally song for the team. Could North Prarie somehow go to the playoffs and satisfy all sporting fans, and maybe shoot hockey into a more popular sport in NP? The Lake Bandits hoped so.
