Chomsky is a sell-out. He started out as a libertarian socialist. He has degenerated into a generic progressive.

Support? What does that mean? I did not in any meaningful sense support his campaign, but I do think moving the US political paradigm from some kind of weird reactionary neoliberalism towards a watered down social democracy is a good thing.

You don't find a self-loathing Communist Baha'i Sociology/Islamic Studies professor with an ambiguous disdain for their own country a tad... oh, I dunno, passé?
Granted, it does add a couple new elements to the ole' Commie university professor schtick, but it's nicer when living memes are self-aware.Chomsky is a sell-out. He started out as a libertarian socialist. He has degenerated into a generic progressive.
I'm curious, who isn't a sell-out?

Didn't you hear, mate?
Bernie killed Rosa.

Cliches generally have to be common. Genuine communists, even self professed ones, aren't too common from what I can tell in academia these days. Though the softer left might be hegemonic in certain faculties.

Eh, there's a few left in Berkeley and some of the more radical universities in the West, as well as the more fringe-tier social science departments, but yeah, the genuine Communists in academia are a dying breed. That being said, it's not like Socialists and Far-Left ideologues in general are terribly uncommon in post-secondary education. Sociology departments in particular are dominated by them.

Okay, then you did, in a manner of speaking, support his candidacy. I did not. So the fact Sanders was backed by Chomsky, along with other statements made by the linguist in recent years, made me realize he had become a progressive.

Or perhaps not, since Luxemburg's compatriots and proponents seem to think that the only thing wrong with the Sparticist uprising was that Ebert and the Freikorps shat all over it.

The discipline itself owes a lot to Marxism so I suppose it'd be strange if it were otherwise. That said a lot of these left professor types are the kind that you are feel are desperately trying to revive and collage Marx so as to rationalise their investment properties.
