Probably sensible.

Then that makes two of us! Yeah, I guess people are gonna bang anyway, because well, being a one-handed warrior isn't gonna get as much satisfaction as the actual act, come to think of it.

I normally agree, but this is a disaster area and they're nominally there to help, not exploit. Prostitution should be legal but regulated to exclude these kind of things. This wasn't a brothel, it's people struggling to get by.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

In cases like this it should probably be illegal.

Again, it’s not going to stop it. Here in the US prostitution is largely illegal, has hardly done anything to stop it here either. I mean you can charge them if you find out sure, but you ah e to find ou first.

Prostitution did not exist in these regions before the disasters?

The problem isn't prostitution. The problem is sex parties with whores on the charities dime.

That's not what they're supposed to be there for, they're there to do charity and disaster relief.....not screwing prostitutes.

What can I say other than charity companies need to be held accountable to do exactly as they advertise with govt penalties and supervision, because they clearly can't do the job they say they're doing. It's a part of the govt not doing what they're supposed to do.

The problem raised by Ostroeuropa was prostitution. The mismanagement of money and the failure of management to adequately address complaints are serious problems.

They're also not there to sleep but if they're not doing it instead of relief work I fail to see the problem. You shouldn't break the laws of the country you're in but there's a recurring suggestion that visiting prostitutes is a dereliction and it's just not supported by logic except in those reports where aid was being mishandled.

The problem I have is the ethical implications of taking advantage of people who might have to turn to prostitution just to survive, which is an incredibly likely scenario in areas where aid workers are visting.
Particularly if aid is being withheld in order to coerce it out of them

Imho in such cases it’s more like rape then prostitution. At least coercion.

Indeed, notwithstanding my religious opposition to prostitution, that is my other main concern, the rape and abuse of the prostitutes. The mismanagement of funds is also a major issue, but not any more so than this.

The sexual exploitation of Haitian people by those who are supposedly there to help them has got to be one of the most depressing recurring problems I've heard of lately. The blue helmets also got involved in this sort of thing.

Oxfam needs to be held accountable, even if it wasn't their charity money being used to pay for this. There is a blatant power disparity at play when an aid worker pays for sex with people who are recovering from a terrible disaster in Latin America's poorest country, and even if you are the most sex-positive person, you have to see why that is problematic.

In these particular circumstances, keeping it legitimately safe, sane and consensual is at least extremely difficult. As I said, there's a blatant and unfair power disparity at play.

There'd still be grounds to argue that it's a bit messed up, given circumstances.

Eh that’s a bit shaky. The idea that asking for money in exchange for sex because you need money implies a lack of consent is just..wrong. The logic behind it could be turned around to say that anyone who works because they need money (essentially everyone) are slaves. Yeah at some point it might be unethical to take advantage of someone’s desperation but they’re still making a choice of their own volition.

This is precisely the issue. People often throw out power disparity or circumstances in defense of people but this dehumanizes them, it strips them of their agency. These people might be in need but they are not children. We're talking about how terrible these people taking advantage of poor people are but what it actually means is looking at these women and saying: "You are unfit to make this decision." Your rationally founded analysis that you would rather live in a world where you had sex with this person than a world where you did not was invalid because your circumstances mean WE get to make decisions for you.
