As the 79th World Cup recently concluded, it will probably be a few RL months. Look for a thread started by NSWC Signups for the 80th World Cup at that time. Instructions for signing up are posted in the first post of the signup thread when signups are opened.

Ok. Thanks.

If you still are looking for some preliminary action at this point, you can always try the Independents Cup. Since you're a South Pacific member you're more than welcome to join it.

I guess this can't be put off further... I'm done. Consider any players in my league to be free agents, and if you have any of my players in your league, you can either choose to naturalize them or you can release them or do whatever. I know there's been two retirements from me, but yeah, this is actually the last you'll see from me around here. I'm sorry it didn't last longer this time.

Question. What is the max style modifier used during the world cups? First i thought that the max style mod would be the KBP points of the first ranked nation. Ugh.. help :p

Style mods are generally +5 (all out attack) to -5 (all out defence).

KPBs are ranking points, not associated with style of play.

Depends on the hosts, but usually it's set to whatever the highest nation's value is.

Or the highest nation's value + max potential RP bonus, or maximum potential KPB rating based on the last 3 cups that imagines the 'perfect' team, the the last keys the host's cat pressed as it walked across the keyboard...

Set it too high and it bunches up the participants closer than they'd be in raw ranking numbers, and that makes upsets slightly more likely. Set it too low and you're likely to have the top team(s) do relatively better, thanks to the exponential way the KPB ranks curve upwards.

I've been inactive for a couple of weeks due to some RL issues, so have only just noticed this:

Audioslavia wrote:The Holy Empire appear to be the first team with 50 appearances in the World Cup finals tournament.

Goodness.

I simultaneously feel proud and old. Terrifyingly, some current WC participants might have been born after my first World Cup finals appearance in WC 1.

For the sake of honesty, however, it's worth noting that there was no qualification for WCs 1&2 (I can't remember offhand about 3&4), so Valanora is - I believe - still ahead of me on WC finals qualified for, as opposed to total number of WC finals.

I will say that Drawk and I, as hosts, set it to the actual highest value of KPB + RP bonus achieved in the tournament, but there is a school of thought that says highest nation's value + max RP bonus is preferable (although I am not in that school of thought, especially considering hosts' proclivity NOT to give the highest possible RP value1 and the common occurrence of the #1 team not being the best RPer).

This is coming back to me now.

A form of qualification was introduced in WC3, but not everyone had to qualify; the leading teams (variously defined) qualified automatically through WC6. WC 7 (my last WC before taking an extended break that ended when I came back for WC24) was the first WC for which everyone except the host(s) had to qualify.

WC3 also introduced spreadsheet scorination. WCs 1&2 used dice, of course; I scorinated Ariddia's matches in WC1 (introducing the principle that no one could self-scorinate), and Ariddia scorinated my matches when I hosted WC2.

Things have changed ever so slightly over the last 15 years.

Whenever the next World Cup comes around, I'm planning on RPing the reunification of Saintland (in fact, I'm setting up the story right now in my RPs for the Independents Cup). If anybody's interested in getting involved in King Paulus XVI's war for the reunification of Saintland, you're welcome to do so.

Speaking of World Cups, I think its very important to have World Cup signups open during FIFA's World Cup this June. Right now, our options to make that happen are likely either A) delaying World Cup 80 for a long time or B) starting the World Cup 81 cycle earlier than normal. Of the two, I think we'd probably be better off trying for the latter option. If we delay the 80th cycle so that the timing matches up nicely with the FIFA World Cup, I'm afraid we could end up normalizing 6-7 months between World Cups (this actually happened 4 years ago, which is why we now have 3 World Cups a year instead of 4).

We could also just ignore the FIFA World Cup and run our World Cup on its regular schedule but I think that's a bad idea because there's probably going to be a large influx of newbies, some of whom might even stick around for years and become important members of our community and we probably need to have a World Cup and BoF for them to enter when the idea is fresh in their minds.

Whatever the solution we agree on winds up being (and the slightly earlier WC81 sounds like the better bet to me without having really thought about it beyond that), we should absolutely try and tap into an influx of interest to coincide with the World Cup, extending to advertising into other subforums as much as we can. With some diligence and some luck, we should be able to get participation numbers back to early-mid-60s levels.

I agree with the above points. This is a golden opportunity for the biggest event in NS Sports when interest should be at its height.

An earlier WC81 also sounds better to me as well.

We could come up with an IC reason for the DBC not being held between WC 80 and WC 81. The DBC seems to be the easiest to cut out instead of Regional Competitions? Just a suggestion.

You could also A) Give preference to bids for WC80 through the voting process that have the fewest number of qualifying matchdays (Groups of 6?) or B) Simply ensure to start the WC81 Signup thread when the World Cup has begun IRL, regardless of where in the cycle it is or how long it will be until the Cup itself starts
