For those plotting a coup do note that two agencies exempt from the shutdown are the FBI and DoHS.. Congress's priority has always been self-protection.

Its probably going to stay shut for awhile as there is not going to be a wall built or a deal on DACA anytime soon. It will only hurt republicans more and more as polling has shown.

By the way, here's an article from the NYT summarizing what happens during a shut down.

NYT: What Will Happen if the Government Remains Shut Down

Trump is right when he says DoD will be hurt by this. About half of their civilian workforce is going to get furloughed. There are contingency plans in place, but it's still going to be disruptive to military operations.
