2017 NSTT World Tour Finals | Shebchetsik, Mercedini

Postby Mercedini » Sun Dec 17, 2017 1:46 pm

The Mercedinian Tennis Association is proud to host the NSTT World Tour Finals, following an unsuccessful bid last year. The competition will be hosted in the northern city of Shebchetsik thanks in part to the MRC.CUBE currently hosting another competition, and will be unavailable to host the tour finals like it would have last year. Instead, the Shebnatsiya Ice Palace will play host to the 2017 NSTT Tour Finals following a successful bid from a number of venues across the country. The Ice Palace always hosts hockey as it is the home venue of HK Dynamo Shebchetsik, hoever the venue has been modified to include a tennis court, the one and only which will be used throughout the tournament. The top eight singles players and the top eight doubles pairings have all been invited to Mercedini for the tournament, with the winner bagging some serious ranking points to take them into the new year.

Has Leo Garry messed it all up for him and Elizabeth Quehall

Has Leo Garry messed it all up for him and Elizabeth Quehall?
Sandra Maguire

Yes, he was upset that he wasn't going to the NSTT World Tour Finals as a Singles player, but it wasn't as if he was sad about going with Elizabeth Quehall. Leo Garry seemed to have taken a bit of a gamble this year, by relaunching his Singles campaign to become World Number 1. He had already achieved the title of Britonish Number 1, but that did not satisfy him, as his place in the rankings were very low compared to the rest of the international field. He wanted more, he was hungry, and despite Elizabeth Quehall filling him with a bit of doubt, Leo Garry assured her that it would be fine, and that their win would not affect how they perform for 2017. But of course, it did. Leo Garry rose up the rankings very rapidly, probably the quickest a Britonish has jumped the rankings, but this was at the expense of the doubles ranking which fell a few places - making them 8th, which meant they were hanging on to this World Tour Finals spot by the tips of their fingers - but Leo Garry was enjoying what was coming of him. He is an incredibly strong player, Leo Garry. After having only played at five tournaments in 2017, he is 9th in the world for singles, the only player that is not from either Ceni or New Gelderland to be in this calibre of players. He knows that it's tough to do what he is doing - coming against the big guns - but he is ready, and he is willing to fight until the very end. Leo Garry has the second highest points per tournament (1st highest is Eutaur Jordaniscus (DCS) with 1000 points per tournament) as he has 565.80 points per tournament, which is higher than any other players who is currently in the top 10.

The Electrum Slam - alongside the International Tennis Trophy, was Britonisea's comeback mark; stating how ready it is to come back in to the game of tennis, the national sport, the sport we used to be right on top of. Concentrating on the Electrum Slam, Leo Garry saw himself in two different finals - for the first time in the history of the ATP/NSTT, Britonisea featured in both the Singles and Doubles final, and where better than for it to be in Electrum? Unfortunately, the Electrum Slam authority made it that he played both of the matches on the same day, which was unfortunate for him. Elizabeth Quehall and Leo Garry managed to Samuel Gates/Greg Meares (ETM), the home and bookies favourite to win. Now, they are ranked 14th, compared to the Britonish pair being on 8th meaning a rematch won't happen in 2017. Whereas Elizabeth could sit back and relax and watch the finals of the Singles - which she did, she came and watched in the arena, Leo was no match for Andy Amada (CEN), who was fourth at the time, and beat him. Leo Garry, despite losing the match, was the actual winner - as it saw him jump up to 9th from 17th position, or at least helped that jump alongside being in the International Tennis Trophy.

The International Tennis Trophy was something Britonisea intended to conquer, and while that didn't quite happen, Britonisea reaching the knock-out stage (for both the Junior and Senior, and went as far as the SF) was much better that last years performance. He was joined by Derek Dubrovnik who gained a whopping 303 points from the ITT, over 75% of his total points - landing him in 57th position overall on the league table. Leo Garry and Elizabeth Quehall also scored huge, gaining the second highest amount of points during the Tennis Trophy, only ten points behind Mark Southgate and Megan Elliot from New Gelderland, who defeated us in the Semi Finals. Interestingly, Mark Southgate and Megan Elliot is in the same Group as Leo and Lizzy for this tournament, and so we will be hoping to see a great rematch.

Another notable mention goes out to Kyle Anderson, who came from being in a player within the hundreds, and jumped to 60th place after his impressive performance at the Electrum Slam - we look forward to seeing him more in 2017, as he is a hopeful to join the now growing list of Britons in the top 50. So, my general verdict is, no, Leo Garry is incredibly smart, and he made the right decision this year - otherwise, sure, he would've been in the doubles NSTT finals, but he would be 50th or 60th in the world in Singles - so good for him!

Good luck to Mercedini hosting, we know they will do a superb job - and good luck to the Britonish hopefuls!
