The old Emperor of Hallgarshian sat amongst the exotic plants of his personal garden while his score of dutiful servants dotted about him.
"Your Imperial Majesty." came a familiar voice from behind him.
'Oh Walter!" Exclaimed the Emperor, turning in his chair to set eyes on a distinguished member of his Foreign Service, "Come come," he called, "stand before me so I may see how you have fared in your travels."
Walter obeyed his emperor and positioned himself in front of throne that Emperor Harold Von Griven was seated in. Walter, dressed in his ceremonial green military uniform, bowed deeply to the man who had ruled his country for over sixty years.
"Well clearly the travels weren't too hard by the look of you." Emperor Harold chucked. His laugh was raspy and strained, an ongoing reminder of his age that had dominated the Empire's politics for many months now. He didn't just sound old though, he looked old too, his skin was timeworn and his eyes that use to command the fear of enemies were now blood freckled.
Walter laughed along with his Emperor before replying, "Thank you your Majesty, but you look better than when I last saw you six months ago."
The Emperor rasped out a laugh again, "Well I wish someone would tell Edward that."
"No!" Exclaimed Walter, "I had heard whispers but couldn't believe it to be true. Prince Edward isn't actually-"
"I'm afraid so." Emperor Harold cut in, "My first born in whatever wisdom now believes he can rule our Hallgarshian, and it looks like he's not willing to wait till I'm in the grave. They tell me he has forty-thousand men pledged to him by my so called vassals."
"Forty-thousand? A sizeable number but he would still be crushed by the Royal Army." responded Walter.
"All true, my friend. That number has grown steadily though over the months you've been gone. Something will break eventually. I'll die or Edward will do something stupid." Replied the Emperor, "Anyways, enough of this matter for now. Why don't you take a walk with me around the garden and you can invigorate me of the details of your travels."
The two then walked around the garden, leaving Emperor Harold's troop of servants behind, as well as their prying ears. During their walk Walter told him of all the wonderful and odd places he had been. Draven, Yuzelkia, Telmar and Natan.
"A civil war you say?" inquired the Emperor.
"Yes, between the ruling establishment and a extremist political movement." answered Walter.
"Who would we find more agreement with?" asked the Emperor.
"Well the extremist have a more realistic sense of politics, much like ourselves, but they are still extreme. The ruling establishment there is weak and idealistic in old notions of democracy." responded Harold.
"Interesting... and you said you got on quite well with those in the establishment you met?"
"I did indeed." replied Walter.
"Maybe we should think about helping them. Intervening, what do you make of that my faithful servant?" Asked the Emperor.
Walter looked puzzled "if you may excuse me, your highness, but why such an interest in this Natan?"
The Emperor halted both of them and grasped Walter with an arm, he looked around briefly before continuing, "Because Walter I estimate I have on good fight left in me. I will not die a Emperor betrayed by his dishonourable son."
Walter was taken back, "But what could a throw-away democracy in this great open world have to do with our internal difficulties here at home?"
The Emperor sighed, "I am ashamed to admit it, but I won't be able to defeat Edward head on. I need to cause some chaos first before confronting him."
"I'm afraid I'm still a bit confused, your Highness. is your hope to delay Edward long enough with this war to formulate some kind of plan against him?"
"A plan has been formulated and we must act quickly. Please, Walter, if it is your last act to me as your Emperor, go back to that Natan, tonight, and declare to their leader in person that Hallgarshian is joining them on the field. I don't care if they say they don't need our help or protest. I will send a force to Natan and my son, Edward, will lead it."
Walter nodded slowly, "I think I know what you mean your highness. Shall I go now?"
"Yes! Go like the wind, my friend!" Harold yelled out as Walter took off towards the exit of the Garden. Emperor Harold then returned to the clearing where his servants had waited, now with a confused look on their face after seeing Walter dart our of the garden.
"Is everything alright, your Majesty?" asked one of his servants.
"Fine fine." Harold said with a dismissing wave of his hand. He took a seat back in his chair, "but someone get me the Royal Commander. I must speak to him immediately."
With that the Emperor's plan was set into motion, The Royal Commander was rushing to his Emperor's garden, wondering what in the world could require his presence so quickly. Meanwhile Walter of the Hallgarshian Foreign Service rushed his way to the airport where he boarded a Royal jet and headed back to the United States of Natan.
