It has a bigger selection of movies. It's quite nice for looking for movies you might not be able to find in Netflix. But I am not sure if you'll find the same titles on Amazon Prime that you do on Netflix.

My dad has both services as a result.

Movies, old ones mostly. Netflix is an interesting company, the way they went from mail order vhs tapes and dvds, to streaming original content.

Surely "different speed plans" and "equal access" are not similar concepts?

Which is the problem here - different speed is bad for services that use any real amount of bandwidth, and lethal for services that depend on it. A video streaming service that can only live-stream on 480p on exactly the same internet plan that you can access 1080p on how means that you don't have equal access to that service as you did - the throttling has changed the product you can get (high-definition on demand video to either standard def on demand or high definition downloads).

Uh, not to be an ass Grim, but different speed plans are really not a problem.

The problem is whether or not all data should be indiscriminate on the speed plan you purchase, not speed plans themselves.

Intrewtingly though the first real big break in net neutrality was exactly that. Netflix cut a deal with t-mobile that if you streamed at 480p, that stream would not affect your data cap, if you want 1080i. They charged it against the data cap. And of course things like amazon counted against the data cap as well.

There is an indirect effect that must be acknowledged; a lot of providers have a large amount of their market filled by American consumers. If the cost of servicing American consumers rises, making it unprofitable to service them, overhead fixed costs could make it unprofitable to serve /just/ the portion of the market filled by foreign consumers. That's unlikely for most providers, except for those that have large portions of their market as Americans, high fixed costs, low profit margins, AND high bandwidth services...so, maybe futuristic high-definition news video.

Youtube Red is owned by Google. Google isn't really the number one concern for up-and-coming infant services.

Hulu is 30% owned by Comcast and is 30% owned by Disney (60% when they finish acquisition of Fox's 30%). The remaining 10% is Time Warner.

Netflix already pays to avoid throttling.

For standard shopping sites now, it's not going to be a problem.
Once you go to video all bets are off 480i I can do in a meg. 4k video is a hog, about a 20mbs. I would be surprised if you where you are we could do 2 way 4k session without loss now even if we both had 100 meg pipes to our isp.

Probably by getting eaten up by multibillion-dollar conglomerates or refusing to service the US.

"Youtube red"

Youtube red is already bad enough by itself that paying for it is more of a charity to Youtube content creators.

Three points here:
[1]America is a corporatocracy & kleptocracy. Democrats & Republicans may diverge on some issues, but they ultimately serve the same boss, Big Business, & consequently, laws they pass will always benefit the rich & will never be done in the interests of the middle class or the poverty-stricken.
[2]The Federal Communications Commission's idea of enforcement involves giving massive corporations a slap on the wrist. The cost of this slap on the wrist, assuming it is given in the first place (which is rare), is miniscule compared to how much $$ the corporation being fined actually has, & is always passed by said corporation onto its customers. In other words, when the FCC does something to "enforce" the rules, WE ARE THE ONES THAT PAY THE FINES. Given that the FCC generally does nothing, & actually ends up fining the American people instead of Big Business, it's a joke to imply that net neutrality exists, at least in this country, or that it even protects us. The rules were nothing but words on paper, nothing more than lip service. That is unfortunate, but that's the reality we need to face.
[3]When anyone insists on repeatedly electing politicians from the two parties that have consistently demonstrated that they do not care about the American people & are only interested in lining their pockets...well, what did you expect?? If you want things like healthcare, education, security, good relations with the international community, democracy, etc., stop electing the Democrats & Republicans.

A quote from Married...with Children comes to mind, courtesy of Marcy: "[If] a man gives a gun to a chimp, and the chimp shoots someone, you don't blame the chimp."
I use some NS stats, but not all of them.

They /own/ Hulu. Hulu is the service they want to protect from competition.

They can charge exactly as much as they used to for Hulu; the only thing net neutrality repeal does is stop similar infant services from competing (by raising the costs for them to provide service to consumers, either at the consumer end or as a cost for provision as Netflix does, paying the ISP directly in a corporate-2-corporate transaction, which is the more likely modus operandi in the USA with an entrenched media environment). That competition would have otherwise forced them to charge /less/ than they already do.

Package sales are common in Asia, where the media environment as a whole is in its infancy - India, the Phillipines are both well-known for this.

It could get really really bad unless the US congress and Trump administration is voted out to such an extent that this change is "cancelled." But the Democrats which are elected, can't be Corporatists.

If anything gets legislators in action, it is big money lobbying. Some mega wealthy companies benefit from Net Neutrality, why haven't they done more to flip senators' and representatives' to their side via buying them off just as aggressively as telecoms?

Rumor is disney is going to buy out comcast's share, and I think it will be more about content availability. All that said the short answer to your question is yes.

The US had Net Neutrality under title 1 before 2015. Now is the first experiment for the US not actually having Net Neutrality at all. Most Americans only have 1 or 2 choices for broadband providers (me included), will those companies (some of the most hated in America) be up to all sorts of shenanigans now? I guess we'll find out.

You say your smart, so figure it out yourself.

You do know that American companies also have their main servers and HQ's within the US, right? Hence they'd be subject to practices in the US (In Netflix's case, ISP's throttling them in order to press their own streaming services), which harms their sales in their main consumer base, which will also harm their international capabilities. It can make it unprofitable to service the US, which will either: Cause the company to die, force them to move their business outside the US and maybe even stop servicing the country altogether, or limit their capabilities to service international clients.

You're putting a dystopian scenario where there is none to be quite frank.
