Private property? Mate, cities own the land the cables are run on. They own the poles, the land under them, and the airspace above them, the same spots where gas lines and underground telephone cables are laid. Not to say there aren't any on private property, but the municipality is a big player in if an ISP can afford to lay cable.

I'm not talking about the city property. I'm talking about the 100 miles across open country you have to drag cables to get to a backbone provider that your local ISP doesn't own.

It's moreso a problem with our government in general. Unlike countries with parliaments, the U.S. has an "all-or-nothing" (also phrased as "first-past-the-post") model, which means that third parties rarely if ever earn representation in the federal legislatures.
