The Ruvian Basketball League (RBL)

Introducing the Empire of Ru's professional basketball league! Basketball is now Ru's national sport and the RBL is the #1 most watched professional sports league in Ru. It is a 30 team league broken up into 2 conferences with 3 divisions of 5 teams in each conference. Teams play an 82 game season where the top 8 teams from each conference make the playoffs where the teams face off in best of 7 series.

The current RBL champions coming into this season are the Catalona Roses, who swept the Zamettar Griffons 4-0 in the RBL championship last season.

Here are the standings from last year's regular season (which will also serve as a list of all the teams)

A civilization with an over 3,000 year history of lizard people killing each other and enslaving everyone else. Now they've finally calmed down and formed a modern westernized constitutional monarchy. (long live Emperor Yoshio!)

Note: Any factbook entries over a year old are severely out of date and may be subject to extreme revision and retconning soon. If you have questions on anything about Ru, please feel free to ask.

IUBC Trophy: The Fleftic Arena, Riuwiee, Abanhfleft (cap. est. 100,786)

Image
Presenting the Fleftic Arena, the largest indoor arena by seating capacity in the Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft

Situated in the north of Abanhfleft's capital city of Riuwiee is the National Sports Park, a 140-hectare "special national designated area" in which a majority of Riuwiee's sporting facilities are located. Standing out among the stadia and gymnasia is the massive and imposing structure and flat roof of the Fleftic Arena, officially the largest indoor stadium in the whole of Abanhfleft with its official stated capacity of 100,786 seated spectators for indoor sports. The structure broke ground on September 26, 2009 as part of the capital city's reconstruction efforts following the aftermath of the Holy Catholic Revolution of 2008 which left nearly the entirety of Riuwiee devastated, and construction was completed over three years later in 2012. The Fleftic Arena is the official home arena of the Abanhfleft national basketball team and has played host to dozens of matches during the International Basketball Championships. Aside from that, the Riuwiee Presidents of the Fleftic Basketball Association occasionally uses the Fleftic Arena as its home stadium when it plays marquee match-ups against well-known teams from the league such as the Malabon Black Ops or the Markovsky Red Army, taking advantage of the arena's huge capacity when the capacity of their usual home stadium, the Sterling Arena, is deemed to be not enough for games of such popularity. Aside from that, the Fleftic Arena has also played host to at least four FBA All-Star Weekends since its inauguration and opening in 2012.

As for the stadium's location, Riuwiee is the capital city of Abanhfleft and is home to over 20 million people. The Fleftic people are very crazy and passionate about basketball, and even though their home side the Riuwiee Presidents has been disappointing in the FBA as of late, the fans still come out in droves to support and cheer for their team. By hosting the IUBC Trophy Final in the Fleftic Arena, the Fleftic government and people hope to show to the greater multiverse just how much basketball is loved and appreciated in the country.

Royal Equestrian Basketball League
Season 1

Basketball has long been largely ignored in the Equestrian States, with no real history of success - or even participation - in the sport. Outside of some largely unsuccessful runs in the IBC and one (?) appearance at the Olympics, the Equestrian States has never done anything of note when it comes to basketball. While the general public's ignoring of basketball remains likely to continue long into the future, the nation's non-participation in the game's international club level has finally come to an end, with the creation of a brand spanking new semi-professional league that will doubtlessly humiliate itself against superior opponents in the coming days or weeks or months or however long the participating clubs' runs last.

Comprised of just eight teams largely built around the handful of players who have played on the Equestrian States' unremarkable national team, the first season of the Royal Equestrian Basketball League (REBL) kicks off in a blaze of mediocrity! The Seaddle Subsonics, boasting more national team players than any other team in the REBL, stroll to an easy regular season title, losing just 8 games along the way. The Warriors, Indigo, and Victory round out the top four, qualifying for the playoffs (and IUBC). Meanwhile, Ponyville Galaxy BC, a pet project of prolific sports team owner Filthy Rich, narrowly miss out on qualifying by losing their final three games of the season like a bunch of morons. At the bottom of the standings dwell the Reds and Archers, winning just 15 games between themselves.

In the semifinals, a fiercely-contested semifinal between the Seaddle Subsonics and Canterlot Victory goes the distance, with the Subsonics barely beating the Victory 3-2. The other semifinal sees the Indigo curb-stomp a pathetic-looking Warriors team that really shouldn't have bothered showing up. After the Subsonics narrow victory over the Victory, and a one-sided contest between Cloudsdale and Everfree, the handful of supporters who follow the sport expect a tight Championship Series where these two international minnow battle it out to see who will be the biggest fish in a minuscule puddle. Excitement builds as the final hours tick away before the final series begins, the stream reaching a remarkable 821 viewers...

And they're all disappointed as the Seaddle Subsonics absolutely demolish the Indigo in three games.

Equestrian States (EQS) venue bids
MultiverseBasket II: Canterlot Ice Arena (capacity 7,525) in Canterlot
Seeing that nobody else had bid yet for the MultiverseBasket competition, the owners of the REBL decided that it would be an excellent opportunity to expand their league's reputation as a credible basketball league. Thus, the owners managed to secure the Canterlot Ice Arena, the Equestrian States' 42nd-largest indoor sports venue to host the competition's Final Four. The Canterlot Ice Arena is the home venue for the Equestrian national basketball team and is sometimes filled to full capacity when they play against more prestigious teams from around the multiverse. With some fairly decent teams hopefully making the tournament finals, it's expected that Equestrians will probably buy those tickets allocated to local fans.

----------

This season marked the biggest year for domestic movement and development within the VannPro Basketball League. Many players found themselves moved to new teams as the VPBL welcomed four new expansion teams. One of which was based in mainland Vangaziland, the Northton Highwaymen. They'd leave the playoffs in the first round. Other expansion teams would have more success.

The Outlands conference is made up of the territories of Wrexwic and Barnicea. Also known as Esportivan Vangaziland, Barnicea has only recently officially been accepted into the ranks of the Vannish Empire & its territories. Part of this includes expanding the top-tier basketball league to the new colony.

One team was the Heske Ferrymen. The city is located on a major river, where Ferrymen once collected tolls and moved passengers up and down the river. It's been the city's identity in other sports and was chosen for the local VPBL identity as well.

Heske had a Cinderella run of a first season, led by Christopher Ironwrought on an MVP season. The 6'8 small forward averaged 28.1 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 5.3 APG and 1.2 Blocks Per Game. They defeated center Lonnie Knucks and Blue Coast in the Finals.

Rounding out the top 4 would be Hectare Yulssen's Emeros Zap and the Wrexwic Pirates. Former national team players Gravu and Manny Battle fought to bring Wrexwic into the top 4.

Vangaziland Qualifiers
1. Heske Ferrymen
2. Blue Coast Mariners
3. Emeros Zap
4. Wrexwic Pirates

Congratulations to Goldstaff Lightning for winning the MultiverseBasket, the second Cosumarite club to win the tournament. This means that only Cosumar has won the MultiverseBasket as of today with two different ballclubs. Goldstaff Lightning will qualify automatically to the group stages of the next cycle's IUBC Trophy. Despite being unbeaten in the MultiverseBasket from the start up to the final four, Sfax Scream comes just short of the victory in the final.

The IUBC Trophy will be scored tomorrow.

INTERNATIONAL UNION OF BASKETBALL CLUBS

Nation and Team Coefficients are now available for viewing.

Competition Changes
  • The MultiverseBasket has been abolished due to losses incurred by the IUBC and as a means of cost-cutting.
  • Nations are entitled to submit at most three entries as a single association,
and four entries as part of a multiassociational league.
  • The format of the IUBC Trophy will be changed. Instead of a best-of-three playoffs and a final four, all games past the group stages will be held in the host venue, with a single elimination game until a best-of three finals. Point system for the team coefficients will be rescaled to compensate for the dissolution of the MultiverseBasket and the changes in the knockout format.
  • Winners of the host bidding from Edition XIII onwards, regardless of the number of bids received, will be ineligible to bid for the host venue for the edition succeeding the one which they won the bid for.

Guidelines for Entry in IUBC XIII
  • Each nation is entitled to three entries, with their champion listed first. Please follow the format for submission in the OP.
  • Carloburgo Knights (VLD) and Goldstaff Lightning (COS) automatically qualifies for the group stages of the IUBC Trophy. If they do not qualify via league, extra spot/s will be awarded for them..
  • Multiassociational leagues are entitled to six entries, with at most four from one nation.

Hosting the Playoffs
Participating nations are entitled to bid for hosting the playoffs of the IUBC Trophy. Please follow the details in the OP. Further detail is strongly encouraged. If there are no bids received, the host venue will be defaulted to Ismart Anetta Coliseum, San Marco, Filindostan.

Deadline for entries for the thirteenth edition of the IUBC is on Friday, February 2, 2018, 11:55 PM (UTC+8).

Changes to the competition to be reflected to the OP once I resolve my PC issues.

Royal Equestrian Basketball League
Season 2

Success!

Well, kinda. The Seaddle Subsonics and Everfree Indigo reached the group stages of the IUBC Trophy and MultiverseBasket respectively, and though neither of them advanced to the knockouts, they also didn't totally humiliate themselves despite facing professional opposition. The Indigo even managed to finish third in their group, which REBL's leadership has interpreted as proof that a semi-professional league can succeed internationally. Domestically, with the hosting of the MultiverseBasket Final Four in Canterlot and the non-total-failure of the Equestrian States national team in the IBC, the popularity of basketball has seen a rather sizable bump, much to the delight of REBL's early investors. Finally, an advert sent out to national team players competing in the latest edition of the IBC saw a few foreign players join Equestrian teams for the first time, Qasden's Louis Boxton being the biggest international name to sign with a REBL club.

In addition to adding foreign talent to the league, REBL's leadership approved the expansion of the league to 12 teams, the four new clubs coming from the Equestrian States' northern neighbor: the Crystal Empire. Crystalline clubs will not be expected to do too much this season as basketball has virtually zero exposure in the nation, but it could develop a following quickly as an indoor sport in a country with a rather cold climate. The four new teams are as follows: Crystopolis Lancers, Crystal Springs Stars, SC Whitecrystal, and Sporting Crystal City BC.

The regular season saw the Seaddle Subsonics utterly dominate the league once again, losing just six games the entire season, two fewer than last season despite playing a full 24 additional games. Meanwhile, the Canterlot Victory and Crystopolis Lancers both impressed as well, the Lancers securing third place and a spot in the playoffs in their very first season, a remarkable achievement given their team's young and inexperienced roster. Everfree was something of a disappointment, however, following up their MultiverseBasket run with a dismal fourth place finish in the league, an underwhelming display after being predicted to contend with Seaddle for the regular season title. The Cloudsdale Warriors were even more of a disappointment, missing the playoffs entirely after finishing second in the league last season, their semifinals sweep at the hooves of the Indigo still seeming to haunt them. The Crystal Springs Stars claimed the final IUBC berth by virtue of their sixth place finish, the second-best among the Crystalline clubs in the REBL. Elsewhere, the Manehattan Rebels and Ponyville Galaxy BC were disappointed to miss out on IUBC play once again despite adding foreign talent to their rosters. At the bottom of the standings Appleoosa, Crystal City, Stalliongrad, and Whitecrystal all failed to make any sort of positive mark on the league, which left the Reds struggling financially in addition to their on-court woes, leading to speculation that they might not be back next season.

In the first semifinal, the Seaddle Subsonics took on the Everfree Indigo, a meeting of the two Equestrian teams that reached the IUBC group stages and a rematch of last season's Championship Series. Expectations were high for the Subsonics after their commanding regular season performance, but fans were left stunned when the Indigo came to Seaddle and took the first two games of the series on the road, opening the door for a possible shocking reversal of last year's Championship Series sweep by the Subsonics. However, the Subsonics rebounded, taking the two games in Everfree and returned home to complete the comeback and secure their second consecutive berth in the Championship Series. Meanwhile, the other semifinal would also go the distance as the Lancers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a decisive Game 5, but fell just short of duplicating the Subsonics feat as the Canterlot Victory finally finished them off and claim the Championship Series spot.

The stage was set for a thrilling Championship Series as the Subsonics and Victory, the REBL's two best regular season teams going head-to-head for the REBL Championship Trophy. After getting hammered in the opening game, Canterlot rallied to take a 2-1 series lead and entered Game 4 with a chance to claim the title with a win on their home court. But the Subsonics' championship mettle shone through with a dominant 19-point victory to force yet another decisive Game 5. The final game was a hard-fought battle, both teams exchanging leads throughout the game; but in the end it was Seaddle that held the lead when the final buzzer sounded. The Seaddle Subsonics were champions of the REBL for the second straight season.
