Salus Maior wrote:I would argue that the Bible doesn't really. In fact I would argue that the people who wrote and put together the Bible, were native speakers of the languages in the Bible, and lived within living memory of the events described (I.E, the ancient Church), know better about how to translate their own texts than the founders of a rival religion 600 years removed from said events and would profit from the discrediting of their doctrine.

Maybe, but what if the translated verses the Unitarians use are similar, if not the same, to translations used by Catholics? Doesn't that mean that Catholic translations are incorrect, because they (again) seemingly contradict Church doctrine?

Basically, if there is a contradiction between the Bible and Church doctrine, any contradiction, who wins?

See, now you're getting into Sola Scriptura territory. Which is the belief that the Bible alone can be translated in any context and by any layman and still be true. This is not true doctrine, and such a view did not exist until the 16th century during the Protestant Reformation. Again, 1600 years removed from those who saw and heard Christ in the flesh and received Apostolic succession from Him.

Under this view, literally anything can be justified given one is creative enough in how they view any particular verse or book. Regardless of whether those closest to Christ's ministry on Earth and the receiving of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost also believed those things (hence why there's a billion different Christian sects these days).

The Bible isn't the Qur'an. Christians do not hold it to be the absolute, self-contained, Word of God directly from the big guy's lips. In fact, for the first few hundred years of Christianity's life there wasn't a Bible in the form we have it now. The various books existed and were held by the Church, but the primary method of teaching used by the Apostles and those they chose to succeed them was oral tradition, which became what we now know as Holy Tradition. And it is from this tradition that the Bible came to be as the books of the Bible were selected by those who succeeded the Apostles.

And it's from this tradition that the Bible is best understood in its original, and truest context.

While I appreciate the answer, it doesn't actually answer my question on what would happen if something in the Bible contradicts Catholic doctrine. Isn't there some kind of ruling on that, or is it assumed that nothing in the Bible will EVER contradict Christian doctrine.

My point is that if someone translates or interprets the Bible in such a way that makes it oppose historic, traditional Christian doctrine, the interpretation is wrong.

Because the Bible isn't a self-contained set of texts. In order to understand it best, you need to also pair it with tradition and historical information.

IIRC the consensus for alcohol is that it's a matter of not getting utterly smashed right? Like it's not halal but getting smashed is the big no-no and point of emphasis.

You'll need a lot of Kvass to get smashed.

No. Alcohol is Haram unless your UIC and his friends. However, the ruling only concerns things which can get you drunk, so things like non alcoholic beer where it would require you to drink 22 bottles in 15 minutes to get slightly tipsy are halal.

Tfw Hanafis also allow a huge range of alcoholic beverages. Just grape-based ones are haram to them.
