This tax hike is being met with significant outcry from the left (but so far as I've seen, not the centre, who are imposing it, or the right), with the logic being that such taxes apply disproportionately to the poor.

Really? A centrist bill did this? Strange.

Is it? The definition of 'centrist' is so tenuous I find it to be almost useless. The self-described centre, where I live, is far more similar to the to the 'left' in america (by which I mean the democrats, not the actual left), but far more similar to the right overall, despite the lip service it pays to the socially-left.

I agree. Though I will state that I'm a moderate/centrist if pressed, I would have to say that there needs to be a different term used, since 'centrist' is saying more of what you aren't than what you are. Centrists aren't liberal, and they're not conservative. What are they? Who knows?

Rather, I feel that most Centrists are, in fact, pragmatists and utilitarians. The warm and fluffy kind of utilitarian, not the 'chop grandma up and make her into dog kibble' kind. Their focus is on the practical solution of issues rather than adhering to a specific ideological bent. This can also work with apistevism, in that you're not relying on what you feel is right, rather you're going with what can be objectively proven and solved. That, in my experience at least, describes most people who define themselves as 'Centrists'.
Balance is important in diets, gymnastics, and governments most of all.

To an American, a Centrist may appear liberal, but don't forget that the average US position is exceedingly conservative compared to the rest of the world. I remember someone commenting how Hillary Clinton was more conservative in some respects to Teresa May.

To the other half? I'll double lol you with a triple lol, and lolstamp it so it can't be re-lol'd. The only thing that can break a lolstamp is an actual argument. Come back with one.

I'd say that from the perspective of anybody on the right, a centrist appears liberal, and conversely, a centrist appears conservative to anybody on the left. It also depends on the country in question. Justin Trudeau is far to the left of Hillary Clinton, but both are considered in centrists in their respective countries.

Could you imagine saying that before the Union went to war with the Confederacy and before Lincoln wrote his Proclamation?

"Okay guys, so in terms of fairness, we'll only free half the slaves. We don't want to piss of the Southerners."

We're not talking about the American definition of 'liberalism'. This is liberalism the ideology, which supports individual liberties, equality before the law, free trade, free markets, etc. Most Western mainstream parties are some variety of liberal and have been for a long while - their differences occur in the way they reason as to how to get to those specific ends and maximize things like individual liberty.

Nothing, since most already are. It just seems like hard ideological extremes are super common because this Internet thingy has enabled hyper-filtering of information sources, while reducing the cost of transmission to near-zero. So, the vast majority of information transmission sources are now tinfoil haberdashers with a global reach. Combine with the 1% rule, et violia.

Also, oversized scissors.

I'm aware of the definition of liberalism. I was speaking about the way centrists are perceived across the political spectrum, and the difficulties involved in defining the center.

I wouldn't say Trudeau is far to the left of Hillary. Both have fundamentally the same approach, continue to support the same tinpot dictatorships and prop up the wealthy elites while merely paying lip-service to progressive ideals to mask their true policies. In many ways Trudeau, Clinton, May, Merkel and Macron are the ultimate conservatives in that they will do anything to maintain the status quo.

French Centrism (and by extension Belgian and Swiss too to some extent) as always been an opponent of liberalism and defender of Nationalism, whether we're talking about the old Bonapartism or more recent Gaullism.
The same can be said of the Italian and Spanish one.
The centrism you're talking about is the Anglo-English one and it is not shared by most of the continent.
