The exact reason as to how the Baraku were even able to survive a long enough time on the otherwise harsh planet of Hydra IV to even become space-faring has continued to baffle many people for centuries. Some believe that the primary reason that the Baraku were able to survive on the world, where meteor showers were just as frequent as intense surface storms, was due to the fact that they hid underground and developed massive, elaborate colonies underneath most of the planet's structure. While this is partially the case for their survival, there still lies the fact that Hydra IV was otherwise inhospitable to regular life on the surface, and would've otherwise destroyed any ship or aircraft, let alone any Baraku, which ventured to the surface. Statistically speaking, and factoring in the surface storms and meteor showers, survival for the Baraku was nothing more than just a hopeless dream far off in the distance for the species.
But, somehow, the Baraku endured.
Moreover, the species actually managed to industrialize with unprecedented speed, using Hydra IV's ample supply of raw materials as a catalyst - combined with the species' own rapid evolution - to quickly develop large cities and factories which further fueled the push to become a space-faring race. However, as is true with most periods of industrialization, there also came the added bonus of weapons development, which almost directly led to war. The Baraku of Hydra IV engaged in various conflicts with other subterranean Baraku colonies for territorial gain, hunger, or just simply to test out their new weaponry on one another. Millions of Baraku and dozens of Baraku Hives were completely wiped out in several culls and battles, all the while as the population gradually exploded and plummeted relative to these wars. It wasn't until the appearance of the Swarm Queen that the Baraku had a proper sense of authority, instead falling under the control of several Queens, effectively "warlords" in this sense, all vying for control over the planet. Unlike the Queens, however, the Swarm Queen was a much more intelligent Queen, swaying millions of Baraku to her side whilst her powerful forces embraced the new technological advances with powered exoskeletons, particle beams, and energy shielding, using her advantage to swiftly and efficiently subjugate the lesser Queens and their respective forces under her control.
Now with a central sense of authority and more technological advancements, the Baraku finally managed to break free of their "prison" of Hydra IV, prompting a great migration as the Baraku population, aboard several Hive Ships, ventured elsewhere in order to find a more suitable world to live on. While the Hive Ships of many Queens landed on uninhabited worlds for the most part, there was always the occasional one which landed on a populated world that didn't take too kindly to being assimilated into the Baraku Swarm, most of the time. As such, many wars broke out between the Baraku and these various nations, many of whom were space-faring themselves. Unfortunately for these indigenous populations, the Baraku's overwhelming numbers were often too much for them to handle, causing them to fall relatively easily, at least in the eyes of the Baraku.
By the time the Baraku had mastered FTL travel (IE now), several hundred worlds had been conquered and converted into hives, in order to hold the species' exploding population. As of now, the Baraku remain relatively isolated in their sector in the Northern Galactic Fringe, though one can imagine and guess as to when - or if - the Baraku will ever attempt to expand outwards like they had done so before centuries ago.
