Nine Games To Go,
By Julia Whitmeyer, Brattleboro Gazette

With nine games left in qualifying for the World Baseball Classic playoffs, let’s take a look at how each group has fared.

Group 1: At 17-4, the Rockets of Newmanistan have been playing like you would expect from a four-time champion. They have been very consistent from the start of this, and does remind us of their best years. They have to be considered one of the favorites to win the whole thing right now. In second, motivated by being able to play at home, are the Equestrian States at 14-7. With Abanhfleft and New Danican at 12-9, the Equestrian States still have more work to do in order to play more home games later, but they have looked good as well. I don’t see anything changing with the top two in this group.

Group 2: Scootalove City has been chugging along at 15-6, and it’s good to see how they get better every year. This is the best qualifying run they have had so far, and they are pretty much a lock. Gregoryisgodistan and Tenburg are in a tight fight for second with Hampton Island creeping into this picture a little bit. I expect it to be the Unicorns and the Metros when the smoke clears, unless the Golden Bears pull off some more stunners.

Group 3: West Phoenicia is starting to lock up this group. Finally. At 14-7, they lead by two over a tie between Anthor and Roborian. The Confederates have been a better playoff team then a qualifying team in the past, so maybe they have everyone right where they want them. Not sure who gets second here, and it probably won’t matter.

Group 4: The Dagans are 4-5 since the 11-1 start, and that is very concerning. Somehow, Schiltzberg has not capitalized on this. They have been very quiet this year, and the Dagans hold a two game advantage on them. They key has been the head to head play for us over Schiltzberg, which is confidence boosting, but the pink and black need to be better against everyone else. Banija is playing well currently, but has too much ground to make up.

Group 5: A bit of a sleeper group, but its Frenline Delpha and Alpine Union leading the way. That will probably hold serve until the playoffs. Hicana was good for a while, but have struggled of late.

Group 6: At 18-3, the Tigers from Super-Llamaland have the best record in qualifying and all the premature thinkers are thinking about the Rockets vs Tigers championship for number five. Hold off on that for a moment, but right now it’s great to see that Super-Llamaland has not taken it easy since winning in Concord Heights last year. Everyone else in this group has a losing record, so the second place team is probably an unofficial bye for the top seed in the playoffs.

Group 7: Ethane leads rather comfortably over a tie between the Northwest Kalactin Threadstarters and Lisander. Maklohi Vai is buried in this group, and there are no excuses. Hard to see a fallen great like this.

Group 8: Nova Anglicana has been consistent at 16-5, but no one will be excited over their regular season performance. Second is Darmen, two games back. Both of these nations seem pretty safe. Quebec is in reach, but has not been doing much to get hopeful about.

Indios rue poor start to WBC 41 as they close in to the Base Corps in second place
by Rafael Sigua Jr

DAVIDIAN ISLANDS - If this was WBC 27 or any WBC that third placers can progress to the playoffs, the Indios would still have made the playoffs had the group stages ended today. Instead, they would need to be almost as perfect in their next six games to progress to the next round. Two of these game, including their very next one, are against the holders of the second spot, the Drawkland Base Corps.

In the most recent three game series, the Base Corps and the Tigers of Super-Llamaland won all their games, including the defending champs 4-2 win over the Indios, which put a dent on the latter's bid to grab the second spot for the playoffs. They limited the damage though, stomping Sandberg 7-1 and narrowly beating the Islanders, 7-5, to keep themselves within touching distance against the Base Corps. In their next three games, the Base Corps will have New Sangti, Super-Llamaland, and Davidian Islands. Should the Indios beat the Base Corps in the next game, then they face New Sportland next and then another grudge match against the Tigers.

What would be interesting though is that the two primary protagonists vying for the second playoff spot will face each other in the final game of the group stages. So in other words, the Indios have a mountain to climb and they have to at least depend on the Base Corps' slip-ups, hope that the Tigers field a weaker-than-usual team (they already clinched top seed in Group 6, though they might go for the overall top seed), and the Indios miraculously win their remaining matches - which is already a tall order for them.

The reason? Their first half form. They lost their first five games, and endured another losing streak at the end of the first half, putting them dead last in Group 6 and having a record of 4-11. Their form on their last nine games say otherwise. They are 7-2 and are now closing to .500 territory. If they can somehow win their remaining games, then they can have a winning record for the first time, and have a chance to usurp Drawkland for the last playoffs spot. Can the Indios do it? We're hoping they can for the pride of this baseball nation.

CYCLONES COMPLETE 7Y/85M DEAL FOR QUINLAN
Douglas Stone, LBC Sports

The end of a long-lived free agency saga is finally upon us, as the New Llama Cyclones have announced the signing of Tennish pitcher Rory Quinlan to a seven-year, eighty-five-million-dollar contract. "Earlier this morning," GM David Windhorst, whose attention was first drawn to Quinlan for his no-hitter at WBC40, announced, "We completed the signing of left-handed-pitcher Rory Quinlan from Tenburg's Tallow RiverSharks. We're incredibly excited to bring Rory to our team, and feel confident that with this addition we can continue to challenge for - and hopefully win - another title."

Quinlan had been rumored to be coming over to Super-Llamaland for almost an entire year, but with the announcement, Cyclones fans can finally relax knowing they have the last piece needed for a championship team - strong starting pitching. With Quinlan, national team lefty Natalie Wu, and the recently re-signed Jarred Atkins, the Cyclones now boast the dominant rotation they needed to complement their lineup and bullpen. While they haven't won a title in seven years now after being bested by Talahita in last season's semifinals, New Llama City will be expecting great things out of the new roster.

"Getting a chance to play alongside Tenburg's best pitcher is a great opportunity for me and for the Cyclones," Natalie Wu commented during this morning's press conference. "Rory is unbelievably talented, and with him we'll have the best rotation - and team - in the league." When asked who would be handed the first spot in the rotation, however, Wu declined to definitively answer, and neither did manager Duncan McKenzie.

Meanwhile, Sofia Rasmussen's New Llama Wizards may have been hurt by their rivals' acquisition of such a strong pitcher. Still, Rasmussen commented positively on Quinlan: "We've never faced the Metros at the WBC, but they're a very strong team and Rory Quinlan is a major part of that. He came to the wrong part of New Llama City, but I'm excited to see him in action."

Nobody's quite sure what to expect of the left-handed starter, although notable sabermetrics website Graphsforfans has projected a 16-9 record and 3.05 ERA for the Tennish pitcher. If he can sustain that level of performance for the entire season, Cyclones fans will be extremely happy with the contract. But there's only one way to find out what he actually does. And LBL viewers can't wait to see it.

6 Tomikosan 24 7 17 92 138 −46 0.292 E

They haven't clinched a postseason spot yet, but with only six games left, I think it is safe to say that it is extremely likely that they will enter the postseason being the first team in the group to clinch a title.

The three run homer from Alex Ponches in the first inning was very nice to see from a player that we don't usually see.

The last three innings were again, locked down by Amalthea "The last Unicorn" Beagle.

The second game was a runaway success. Stan Gagnon, Alex Tremblay, and Paul Mins let them only get in about 4 hits total for the entire game.

Our bats on the other hand, destroyed Tomikosan team.

They were many great things in that game, the greatest was in the fifth inning, two back to back grand slams from Rick 'The House/God of Thunder'' King and Zoey Derpus. That was just amazing to watch.

The last game was also good, Hampton Island only got one run the entire game, and were unable to get anything else other than 4 singles and one double the entire rest of the game.

The three run homer in the fourth was thanks to Stuart Nova.

On to standings, Tomikosan has been eliminated from postseason contention with things not looking good for Pavilion Tent or Hampton Island .

Gregoryisgodistan got demoted to third place, it remains to be seen if they can turn this around in six games and take down Tenburg as they have done in WBC's prior, or will Tenburg maintain second.

It will be a tight race to be sure. Our Unicorns are very close to a clinch, but they will still have to work for it.

Keep up the good work Unicorns.

Alea Iacta Est - Part XI

This was not how things were supposed to go. Hicaña was supposed to be challenging for a playoff spot - no, in the playoffs, not going down four games with a 10-12 record with just eight games left to play. But of the two scenarios, the latter seemed far more likely right now. They'd gone down quickly to the Ajian Empire despite a favorable start, and by the top of the ninth they were down 6-5. On any other day, it was a perfectly surmountable deficit. But the last seventeen Hicañans to go up had all been retired in order by a dominant Ajian relief corps. They just didn't seem to have what it took.

Alex Cameron knew why this was happening. He'd been told by Villareña that the World Baseball Council had reacted negatively to Hicaña's reconquest of Sola. "They might be making calls against you. Just a few, but you'll have to let everyone know." He had, and the players...hadn't seemed very impressed, but it was the logical explanation for their struggles he'd been looking for.

"We're going to lose, we're going to lose, we're going to lose," Alex Cameron was mumbling to himself in a corner. But things weren't yet finished. Yannick Hechavarría, backup catcher for the New Llama Wizards, had worked a 3-1 count off of closer Tobei Sugiyama...who proceeded to throw ball four, and then ball five.

"Strike three!" The umpire called. The Llamanean lost it. Before anyone knew what was happening, he was screaming in the umpire's face. Before Alex knew what was happening, he'd been ejected from the game.

Three batters later, pinch-hitter Lucas Correa, who for some reason was struggling to hold in laughter, hit a three-run home run off Sugiyama to put the Phoenixes ahead 8-6. They were now just three games away from the Alpine Union.

THE ROCKET REPORT

ALTERNATIVE HISTORY, PART III

By Taylor Larson,

When I left you, we were through World Baseball Classic 26, and Newmanistan had picked up their fifth title in the 24th Classic. As the years go on, would the Rockets have picked up even more titles if they continued to return every single year and did not have such a long hiatus? Well, let’s find out! Once again, I add my disclaimer about this being completely satirical. What isn’t satirical is some of the recent pictures I posted on my RocketGram page from an event that I hosted here in Pocono City. Check them out! No pictures of me and Justin Zheng yet, but eventually when he gets here, I can’t wait to interview him. So, here we go, let us continue with the alternative history of the World Baseball Classic!

WBC 27: This classic is jointly hosted by Maklohi Vai and Saintland. One question that I have got with my alternative history from the readers which is a good one, is why I am not saying Newmanistan hosted another tournament during this stretch. Truth is we wanted to give other nations a chance to host it, and this one was no exception. There are twelve groups in this tournament, and the Rockets end up in Group 6, where their biggest opponents will be Sangti and The Serbian Empire. Now, another question some are asking is why I am omitting teams from a group, such as in this example, the question would be why am I omitting New Montreal States. The reason is that Newmanistan would be a Pot 1 team based on how this history is progressing, so they would not be seeing the actual Pot 1 team that was in the group. Newmanistan would one replacing them. What seemed to be a cakewalk group proved to be more challenging as Sangti proved to be pretty good, and The Serbian Empire was a pesky bunch. The Rockets end up 5-3, tied for first, and get the tiebreaker. They draw the #5 seed, get a first round bye, and take out Strawbee, the #21-seed in the second round. You see what just happened there? Strawbee went on a Cinderella ride and “really” won this championship. But things would have been a lot different if they meant Newmanistan in the next round.

Now, with the actual champion out so early, who really wins this World Baseball Classic 27 title? This alternative history thing did not only have the potential to add more titles for the Rockets, but had the potential of getting someone else a title, too. Strawbee is out now, and the Rockets now battle the nation of Southwick. We didn’t know all that much about these guys, but Newmanistan takes care of business once again! Milchama would win a three game series over Zwangzug, and continued to be on a roll, and they would be the semifinal opponent of Newmanistan. The Warriors would have the upper hand in this series, and knock Newmanistan out.

Meanwhile, Maklohi Vai knocked out Sangti (for real) to get to the finals in the other half of the bracket, so they advance here too since they are not affected by the Rockets. The finals therefore is Milchama vs Maklohi Vai.

Maklohi Vai wins. That’s when it was supposed to happen, guys. It should’ve happened. Sorry we weren’t really in this Classic for you.

WBC 28: The World Baseball Classic returns to Newmanistan! Well, no, actually it didn’t really, it was hosted by Vaugania. But since they ceased to exist, there’s no one from there that I can tick off saying they didn’t really host, and that we really did. We would have hosted one of these at some point, so why not here? The Rockets end up in Group 4, with a tough task of having Saugeais and Qazox in their group. It was not going to be easy! In a tough group, Newmanistan finishes 7-3, but is second to Saugeais, who ended up winning the group. The Rockets are the 9th seed overall, and take care of business against 8th-seeded Thatius. Next up is #16-seeded Mosktopia, who shocked (for real) top-seeded Lycrabon. Newmanistan takes care of Mosktopia, and gets the Zebras from Zwangzug in the next round. Unfortunately, Newmanistan is knocked out at this stage. Super-Llamaland takes their first title.

WBC 29: This Classic gets hosted by Equestrian States. Like the current Classic, the Rockets end up in Group 1, and end up having The Serbian Empire and Karditan as their primary opponents to be concerned with. The group stage is a success, and the team goes 8-2, and draws the #2 seed overall, meeting up with Darmen, who was looking to repeat their fate the prior time that Equestrian States hosted. However, this time, they would not be able to, as Newmanistan swept them away without that much difficulty. Things were looking good as Gregoryisgodistan next stood in our way. Newmanistan had not had much history with them to this point, and many would be disappointed when the Rockets were simply flat in this series, and had an early exit.

WBC 30: One more for you, for now! The 30th Classic was a jointly hosted effort by Llamas and Wolves, or Super-Llamaland and New Wolfopolis. The Rockets end up in Group B and have the nations of Saugeais and Kinzar as being their primary opponents. They win the group with a 6-2 record, as things were very tight behind them. This competitive group stage may have taken a toll on the team, but they seemed to be ready for the playoffs, where they would see Karditan in the second round after having a first round bye. The bye was very beneficial for the team, as they needed it in order to knock off this opponent in a thrilling three game set, and then do the same to the Royal Kingdom of Quebec in the next round. Awaiting in the next round would be Jeckland, who seemed to be having a fortuitous playoff run. Therefore, I predict that we take out Jeckland and end up in the finals against Super-Llamaland. Since there may be more then the average number of Super-Llamaland fans reading The Rocket Report right now due to the Justin Zheng signing, I’ll concede this to you guys to keep the hate mail piling up.

We’re now through 30 Classics. The Rockets are still on five, and we can say that Maklohi Vai would have won a big one, so we can’t rag on them for that. Brianne Henry is in South Charlotte of all places talking to sources there who believe they are very close to making an official announcement that Jack Lynch is going to the Condors. That would be pretty big, and a nice little gamble by the Condors front office. They aren’t the biggest spenders, but will take these chances once in a while, so I am sure that their fans are thrilled.

"Hey Grier, you all set?"

Elliott finished putting the last of a few reports, notes and small scripts on the large desk in front of him, looking at his boss as he finished and walked away from the stage. The slim blonde-haired broadcaster that was Elliott's boss had his hazel colored eyes buried on digging into a sheet that was detailing some of the players he would be covering tonight, or more specifically a statistic, and he only briefly looked up for a moment to flash a small, quick smile at Elliott "Yes, I believe we are. Air in 5 right?"

"Air in 1."

"Okay, great, let's get this show on the road."

Grier set the single sheet down on top of the paperwork he had before him and he quickly thumbed through it all, selecting a brown and yellow filing folder and placing them on top of the pile and then carefully tidying them up, then setting them back done straight in front of him and then ensuring his navy blue tie was firmly in it's correct position, the internal clock in his head winding down as he looked directly into the camera, preparing to begin his broadcast; the nerves had faded after nine years, but they still remained present slightly.

Cue signs and cards from the support staff alerted him to when they were on, and once the familiar card and loud red light came on, he fixed his teeth-white smile and began his speech "Goooood evening my fellow sport enthusiasts, and welcome to the Herald Sports Show, I'm Girer Radcliff and we're here for the next two hours to cover the latest, greatest and most interesting across Anthoran sports."

"Well, off the top, for those of you who are baseball fans, I'm sure you've been watching the World Baseball Classic with some appeal, as our Thunderheads are squaring away for their first try at qualifying for the playoffs under foreign manager, Colin Nittledeen. He's faced criticsm for their rocky start but now in the last 9 they've win 5 and have placed themselves in an comfortable, albeit shaky, second place. With only six games remaining, they still have some work to do if they're to continue staving off the surprises in the group; it was predicted to be a cake-walk for the team but the unranked clubs have been out-performing every wild expectation and I think for our side of things, a heavy dash of bad performances has also been mixed in. The pitching in particular has seen more then it's fair share of struggles, though Nathan Flynn gets the applause for pitching not one or two, but three shutout games this Classic."

"Now, the hitting has been spotty; Tony Russell is leading the gang with a .303 average over the Classic, McPherson and Green are coming behind him, though both have been marked with struggles on strikeouts, McPherson especially seems inherently focused on driving out the next long bomb; I dare say training him on the effects of small ball and having him use them would see him improve slightly. However, the big story tonight isn't the whys and what ifs of prior games, but rather manager Nittledeen holding a press conference this morning with his stalwart pitching coach Jeremy Callahan who he brought with him from Super-Llamaland. In the press conference, Nittledeen announced that Denzel Price, who has struggled mightily through this Classic with a abhorrant 6 ERA, was being removed from the starting rotation effective immediately and would be placed in the bullpen. He also stated that taking Denzel's spot would be none other then Pitcher of the Year for this season Konnor Valentine, of the Northhall Hustlers, who hasn't played on the national team for the last two seasons. Valentine was a gem in the Thunderheads first two international outings but was eventually excluded due to suffering performance during his domestic appearances, but this season he proved to be the league best, with 23 wins and a solid 2.12 ERA, and he will be joining the team at the near-end of the Classic itself."

"The roster move is a surprise, as we've never seen such a thing take place during the Classic; moving a pitcher from rotating to bullpen, sure,
but bringing a pitcher in from outside of the roster? With only six games left? It for sure is a highly interesting move; I can see why Nittledeen did it, Konnor had an absolute career best season and remained hot all the way towards the end, however there are some questions over whether he's remained hot with the season now being over for fourteen weeks and on top of that, his father has recently passed and it has long been covered on how close Konnor was with his father, who had some fame with the baseball circuit due to him being a player himself in the pre-professional league organization days. So, if he can come into this Classic and be the Konnor Valentine we've seen all year, I think this could be a positive boon for Nittledeen and the Thunderheads; but he's definitely going to have to leave the personal distress, and rust, at home."

"Moving on in our coverage tonight, and I'm sure the piece you're all waiting on, Lucius Horn and the Ducks are set to leave their training camp later this week as they head out for the first of this year's World Cup of Hockey...."

The West Phoenician Confederates continue to keep fans with a fit of excitement as they win 2 of 3 games only losing against Anthor 6-5 building up a fever that the Confederates are continuing to make a name for themselves in the World Baseball Classic.

With 6 games left for the qualifiers West Phoenicia is highly confident of progressing to the top 16. As it sits in first place 2 wins ahead of their closet competitor.

But there are three other teams still in position to upset the West Phoenician dream. Anthor, Gascorp and Roborian are all in prime position to claim the number one.

Anthor needs to see The Confederates have at least 4 bad games while they win each of theirs while Gascorp and Roborian need the Confederates too lose all 6 games and for them to win each of those 6 games.
West Phoenicia has had a fantastic run this season with currently 16 wins and 8 loses. Statistically West Phoenicia should win at least games enabling them to reach the next stage but nothing is confirmed until after the next 3 games that will give a clearer picture.

It had been a while.

Not since last Classic had this group of guys gotten together in a locker room before a game and downed a shot. Now there were a few ladies along with them, but it didn't matter too much.

Michael said a few words as they poured up. "We'll I suppose we should congratulate our friends Jack and Rory on their new deals."

The team whooped, hollered and applauded in agreement.

"So here ye go, cheers boys. Slainte."

"Slainte," they all replied in unison before knocking their shots of vodka back.

Some of them shouted "speech!" in Jack's direction.

"Right, kiddos," he said. "Ye know I'm no good at speeches. I'm about as good at speeches as I am at talking to reporters."

This got plenty of laughs.

"Right, now we've been doing well. We've been floatin' 'round second. But some of us, myself included, have been a little distracted."

A few chuckles followed.

"Aye. Anyway. I've dealt with my distraction. And Rory's dealt with his. There's no excuses now. We gotta finish strong, boys and girls."

They loudly agreed.

"Right, so let's put the shite behind us. We can get in trouble when we're done here, yea? Let's cause chaos, like we've done before!"

The team roared in response. Vivian came out of the crowd to join him as Diane and Michael got up on a bench and jumped about.

Jack smiled. There was a lot ahead of him: a new team in a strange land, new opponents, new challenges. But this... this was the team he loved to play with most.
I offer only slanderous mockeries!

While not officially confirmed by Equestrian States, from a mathematical standpoint even if Tenburg or Gregoryisgodistan wins the next three games straight while the unicorns lose the next three games, the Unicorns will be in the lead by three games.

That is, of course using the worst case scenario, it will still be 20-10 Scootalove, 17-13 Tenburg or Gregoryisgodistan. Not enough to drop the Unicorns from first to third.

Now, going into going into further analysis, it is possible for Tenburg and Gregoryisgodistan to tie, if they they both win the games on the first and/or the third. If Gregoryisgodistan wins the first game and so does Tenburg, but then lose to Tenburg on the second game, they can still tie if Tenburg loses on the third game and Gregoryisgodistan wins the third game. But no matter who wins or loses on the first game, the second game will be against Gregoryisgodistan and Tenburg.

I don't see away for ether team to slip to 4th place, as both teams will still beat Hampton Island in a tie and maintain third place . No offence to Hampton Island intended, the young team did there best this season, but they got put into a group with the ninth, twenty fifth, seventeenth, and sixty fifth ranked teams. Better luck next year.

Now, this WBC's postseason is something to get really excited about. This is the first time where a way to becoming the WBC champions is open and clear for the unicorns to trot to. They have the rank, they have the experience and the training. It's not going to be easy, but it is realistically possible.

Now, a quicker than normal recap of the last three games that the unicorns have played. First game was rather boring, the Unicorns still won by one run thanks to an RBI in the 7th by Dave Candy. Pitching was good at keeping down the other team's bats. Thanks to Bastion Rogers, John Johnson and, Amalthea Beagle for only allowing them 4 hits the entire game.

Second game was a massive surprise, in the ninth we got a grand slam from Dave 'The King' Haggard and a two run RBI from Rick 'The House/God of Thunder'' King. Pitching was all right, Trevor Murphy, Paul Mins and Roger Brown only let them have about 6 hits the entire game.

Third game was where the pitching had an off day. Gregoryisgodistan got 14 runs that game, many of them being home runs and some of them being grand slams.

The only real thing of note was that three run home run in the third thanks to Zoey Derpus.

Overall, despite the last game being rater disappointing, The Unicorns will be finishing first in there group.
Most likely, Gregoryisgodistan will finish second but Tenburg could upset them and sneak into second.

The Unicorns have done that twice before, so don't discount Tenburg yet.

Gratissima Eliminated

Postby Gratissima » Mon Oct 16, 2017 11:50 am

Pessimists have guessed right: Gratissima has been eliminated from the playoffs in this year's WBC.
"We knew this was coming," stated prominent pessimist Franky Failure. "The team is just not good enough. We will need to make significant changes for next year if we want any chance at all--and even then, it's just not going to happen."

Lions Drifting After Excellent Start

Elmer Sutton, Special Correspondent, Londinium Courier

WBC 41; it's a chance for the Nova Anglican national baseball team to redeem themselves after a lackluster Round of 16 exit against, of all teams, the Scootalove City Unicorns. No disrespect intended to the Unicorns; they're a solid team and are, in fact, one game better than the Lions at this stage of the competition at 20-7. It's just that one would expect better from a veteran, top-10 squad, against relative newcomers. And the Lions really did do well initially, racing out to a 13-2 first half, fueling speculation that this team might actually be able to make a deep run into the playoffs. They pounded out 23 runs in the first three games with Seth Armstrong setting the tone, driving in 8 of those 23 runs and going 6-14 with 2 HRs. NT rookie Nate McLaughlin pitched a two-run complete game in his first start, with Armstrong providing a grand slam in the first inning of an 11-2 win. Another new starter, SS Brendan Wood, hit a key bases-clearing double in the 10th inning of a 9-4 win over former champions Lycrabon, while Damon Singleton pitched his second complete game of the qualifiers in game 12 against Gratissima, a 5-1 win. The Lions topped it off by sweeping their last three games of the first half, with closer Nick Christensen getting five outs to defeat Cosumar 5-4, Armstrong hitting a walk-off three-run jack off Lycrabon's closer Frank Crane to defeat the Jays 4-2, and McLaughlin tossing a complete game shutout against Quebec to give him two complete games in three starts. At 13-2, the Lions looked unbeatable.

But they have been extraordinarily pedestrian in the second half with only three games to go to really get back on track. Many teams might be satisfied with a .500 record when your closest competitor is 4 games back, but the Lions' 6-6 second half record is a real disappointment. Even though they hold a three-game lead over Darmen with three games to go and are assured of the playoffs, they needed to play better. Carson Whitten and Darren Lawson got battered in their first second half starts, yielding a combined 10 runs in 10 innings in games against Darmen and Cosumar. Young Ben Clayton followed suit in his first start, getting chased after 4 innings and 5 runs, while the bullpen finally faltered after 7.1 innings of relief as Damian Ryan yielded a two-run homer in the 12th to lose to Lycrabon 7-5. McLaughlin gave up 4 runs in six innings against Quebec and it took a seven-run rally in the seventh to avoid a third straight loss and beat them 8-5. Whitten rounded back into form against Darmen, tossing 7 innings of two-run ball, but it took a Moses Deng triple and Ty Oliver sac fly to win that game 3-2 in 10 innings. The Lions sandwiched losses to lowly Gratissima and struggling Lycrabon around an 8-2 win over Cosumar that they broke open with 5 runs in the 6th. The sensational rookie McLaughlin shut out Quebec again, making this his third complete game and second shutout against the Royal Kingdom in 5 starts; he now has a 2.08 ERA with 44 K's in 39 innings against that team. It remains to be seen how he'll fare against better competition, but right now, he has the best numbers of any Nova Anglican starter. The Lions smashed out 15 hits and 9 runs against Darmen, with Michael Holt's 3-5, 2 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI day leading the way and Whitten throwing 7 more innings of two-run ball and striking out 10. But they ended on a low note, as Gratissima's Erik Allen matched Darren Lawson pitch for pitch, both yielding two runs in seven innings, before Jonathan Torrance hit a walk-off single against Casey Burke. The 6-6 second half has been filled with ups and downs.

And the blame can't be put on just the offense of the defense. They have seen a half-run decrease in scoring and a half-run increase in runs allowed in the second, averaging just 4.9 runs scored per game against 4.5 runs allowed per game. The rotation struggled out of the gate, but the lineup also failed to score in a couple of key matchups and the bullpen has been responsible for a few late-inning losses.

What is the lesson to learn? A better showing from Darmen (7-5 in the second half) might have sunk them, and it's important for the Lions to realize they got lucky. All of the top teams are jockeying for playoff position and the Lions' 19-8 record ranks better than one and tied with two other top teams, putting them squarely in the bottom half of first-place teams. If they want an easier path to the championship, they would be well served to win their last three games and try to claim as high a seed as possible. They still have a shot at a top-4 seed, and there are some dangerous second-place teams like Equestrian States and Schiltzberg lurking. They'll need improvement from the lineup and the rotation to avoid a risky first-round matchup.

THE ROCKET REPORT

LYNCH IS COMING; DUVALL DOMINATES

By Brianne Henry,

Two big stories to report to you today, so I will get right to it. The first is the signing of Jack Lynch. Yes, it is finally official, no more speculation. He is coming to Newmanistan, and as Taylor wrote about in her fascinating alternative history segment, it is indeed the South Charlotte Condors that will bring him here. More on that in a moment, but first let’s talk about the recent World Baseball Classic games.

After being handed her first qualifying loss since World Baseball Classic 39, Courtney Duvall made amends for it against Equestrian States this time around. Courtney had a bit of an adjustment pitching to other species; if you look at her stats in the three games against the Ponies, human hitters in their lineup could only muster a BA of .125. However, the non-humans combined for a BA of .318 off of her, and accounted for much of the scoring. Starcloud, in particular, seemed to have success against Duvall. Courtney had mentioned that it was different for her to pitch against the non-humans, but she must have picked up on something for this game. For six innings, Courtney failed to allow a hit, but Starcloud would break up the no-hitter in the seventh with a single. It would be one of the three hits that she eventually allowed, as she fanned twelve in the complete game shutout. She fanned twelve, with humans being the victim nine times. None of the humans in the lineup could get a hit off of her in this game. This will end up being Courtney’s final start of qualifying as she will be rested to pitch the first game of the playoffs. Hannah Lee will start in her place, and the way she has pitched in this Classic, that’s not going to be much of a drop-off. The victory put the Rockets at 23-4, and they have simply done excellent to this point, and have clinched the group. They have the best record in qualifying, and it is unlikely that they will drop out of the top two, regardless of future results. With some decent nations in second place, it’s important to get as good a seed as possible, and we seem to have accomplished that.

Moving on, let’s talk about Jack Lynch. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about this slugger from Tenburg over the last little while, and now we do not need to speculate any longer. Lynch has signed a seven year deal, worth a reported $96 million to take his services to South Charlotte. For Jack Lynch, this is a great spot to play in which to play in Newmanistan. Unlike Justin Zheng, who took the offer from the richest team in the Empire with the most scrutinizing of local media (Not me, surely. No really, I’m not the worst. Come on, now), Lynch goes to a team in a big enough of a market to make deals like this and contend for titles, but in a city away from the hostile media corridor of Pocono City (Not The Rocket Report, surely), and Loudon, or even Tundra Falls, but not quite Southport. South Charlotte’s biggest rivals are North Charlotte, naturally, and South has historically been a better team then North, and Dover City. It is great for Jack that he gets this out of the way now. You could see it beginning to weigh him down, and often times the second Classic is tougher then the first. In the first, no one has expectations. In the second, if you were successful in the first, the expectations are always high, and sometimes unfairly high for what is still a young nation in international play. He knows where he is heading, and can now exclusively focus on the Cyclones, and getting them to the playoffs. If they make the playoffs, it is very possible that they end up as our first round opponent.

What does this do for South Charlotte? This a relatively balanced team, and a playoff bubble team overall, prior to this signing. Young pitching phenom Hannah Lee will be a teammate, as well as closer Shannon Spencer, though Shannon is unlikely to be around for that much longer as her career winds down. As far as Lee is concerned, she is really developing very well, and if you put her and Lynch together, the Condors have a dangerous pair. No one really knows how good Jack will do in Newmanistan, yet. He’s had personal success, but did not get much help from his teammates in the prior playoff games. Most believe he will be very good, but just how good is yet to be a seen.

Here is some reaction from Rockets players on social media:

Courtney Duvall: “I am thrilled that Jack has decided to play out here. He and his wife are great people, I have had the pleasure to get to know them. In that time, I know how much of a competitor he is, and there is no doubt in my mind he will succeed here.”

Ashley Stevens (Rockets Manager): “Jack is one of those players that is a leader and makes the team better around him. He is a great addition to South Charlotte. I look forward to coaching against him when our teams meet, unless our nations meet first in the Classic.”

Hannah Lee (Pitcher, South Charlotte): “I was excited when the rumors came out, and now to hear this. Amazing, I am so excited to meet him, and play with him! I have heard so many great things about him.”

Kayla Carey (Shortstop, North Charlotte): “Now that it is official, I have to say I respect the decision that he made. He did not have to do this, and it says a lot about him. For now, I am more concerned with the Classic.”

The Alto Mare Guardians Military Music Radio

Hey there, it's your boy DJ William B. Flint.

I have just been told news from Pavilion Tent, The Scootalove City Unicorns have qualified for the post season.

I Imagine those two silly goofs that are The Co-Director of the Treasury Department and her sister, that being Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo for anyone that has ignored the past four years of news somehow, are really happy with this.

Anyway, in preparation and celebration of them going to another pony nation, I have prepared a song that's a little different from the normal rock, power metal, and rarely folk music that we normally play.

This time we are playing the current number one hit in Equestrian States, to reflect Scootalove city being the top its group.

And it's name is, "Rainbow- Songbird Serenade". It's a little poppy then what I normally play, but for what it it's an ok song.

Oh, and congratulations to Unicorns, good luck in all your future games.

Meh blog

Our Indios are almost mathematically out of the World Baseball Classic with them needing to win all their games, Drawkland losing all of theirs and Indios beating the Base Corps by 9 or more runs. Sounds easy? Meh.

It could have been easier before the past few games. Indios beat Base Corps 6-4 to go one game behind them. Next matches were New Sangti-New Sportland and Super-Llamaland-Drawkland. We can equalize given this set of games? Meh.

We lost in 10 innings and Base Corps beat Tigers. Sucker punch. And the defending champs did not give us any favors in the very next matchday. The end result? Three games behind Drawkland and a single win can secure them the second qualifying spot. I'll leave some memes here. Meh.

"Jack?"

Jack looked up at Michael as he was tying his cleets.

"How ya feelin?"

Jack shrugged. "We'll enough I guess."

Michael said nothing for a few moments. "I'm not good at this kinda thing... it was fun, mate."

"Tallow?" Jack reflected briefly. "Yea. Yea it was." He smirked. "You're gonna hold the place down for us right?"

"I wish I could. I don't have much left, you know?"

"Aye."

"I, uh... I think I'm gonna hang em up after this."

Jack stopped tying his cleats, looking up slowly at his friend. "You're kiddin'."

Michael shook his head. But then he smiled. "Letting it all hang out from this point forward."

Jack smirked in return. "Remember when we were listening to Julian Master? And he never mentioned us?"

Michael chuckled.

"Remember what we said? Wouldn't be the first time we'd drag a team over the hump."

"Aye."

They shook hands.

"I'll see you out there, Jack." Michael left him there.

Jack sat in the chair for a few minutes, looking back over the time he spent in Tallow, from eighteen years of age to now, at twenty-six. Four titles. Each was unique. Each game was different. Each at bat. Each beer had a different feeling. Each crowd had a different sound. The Classic was much like that. Every game was special.

It hit him just how much he was going to miss home during the ENBL season.

He stood up, and headed out of the empty locker room alone. His cleats clanked loudly as he headed down the empty hallway to the dugout, his mind still bouncing around between different moments in time.. his first triple. The time he robbed Colin McHugh and turned the tide in the title series against the Raiders. The hundreds and hundreds of beers he shared with Michael, Rory and others. It was all going to end after this classic. He made up his mind that after playing the seven years with the Condors, he'd try to come back home.

Maybe he could spend his last few years on the Raiders with Vivian. Or maybe she'd go to North Charlotte. Who knows.

He grabbed his glove in the dugout and headed onto the field, paying no mind to the obnoxious home crowd for the most part. As he began taking a few tosses from Shane, he began to look around and noticed something peculiar: a lot of light blue.

Rockets gear. And they were all watching him.

It seemed they had come to see what he was made of.

He'd have to show them.

Thirdy games have come and gone and in the end, The Unicorns have proven themselves to be the best in there group.

They have finished in this WBC better than any other WBC they have ever been in.

Back when the team debuted in WBC 38, they had a record of Wins 14 -10 losses. As much as it is painful to remember, WBC 39, were I still maintain that the Unicorns were robbed of a postseason entry, finished there season Wins 16-14 Losses. WBC 40 , they finished with a respectable Wins 19-11 Losses. This WBC, they left the season, not only top of there group, not only getting seeded at number four rather than number 13 or 11, but with Wins 22-8 Losses.

We do not know where the team will be going, but our political reporting side has already confirmed that Scootaloo and Rainbow Dash, along with the rest of the Office Ladder + Minister Of Defence being:
    Leader: Gordon Freeman
Co-Vice Leaders Kinzie Kensington and Derpy
Head Chair of the Senate Gavin Free
Co-director of the Treasury Department 'Boss'

As well as The Starlight Spartans with of course Colonel Star Butterfly going to Equestria States for a vacation to see there favorite team play and hopefully win it all this year. TDDROH Senate will also be watching every game they play in the postseason, barring some sort of crises.

These guys are the regulars who show up to every postseason game, so I think we need a name for this group. I shall call them 2,000+ Derpian Friends.

On to the last three games the unicorns played, the first one being a continuation of the tired pitching we saw last game. When Sam Lam took the mound, she looked visibly tired and worn out. So did John Johnson and Amalthea Beagle. Leaving the batting to pick up the slack. They did there best but got worn out by the more energetic Sheriffs eventually. The major thing of note for the batting, is the 3 run homer in the first by Zoey Derpus. Again, she along with the rest of the batting got tired from working double time and the Sheriffs eventually won.

Thankfully, the pitching was rested up and a combo of Steve 'The bat' Gat, Roger Brown and, Alex Tremblay slowed down Hampton Island for the much more tired bats from yesterday's game to get up and finish the job. Pat Zater got the three run RBI they needed to win.

The last game was much more of fun party. The pitching and the bating have been relieved of there fatigue, from a goodnight's sleep and great breakfast of pancakes and coffee reportedly from from the nation of Dylar, the bats and pitching were fully recharged.

We were ready for a fun game and a fun game is what we got. A three run homer from Rick 'The House/God of Thunder' King in the fourth inning and 5 innings of being shut down with no hits at all from the last unicorn herself, Amalthea Beagle let them have no hits for the rest of the game.

As is tradition, in the post game, Scootloo and Amalthea Beagle did something silly for a picture.

Scootaloo put a toilet paper roll on Amalthea Beagles horn and Amalthea Beagle just kinda spun it around.

Tomorrow is a day of relaxation. Only a half hour of practice before they leave for an yet to be announced Equestrian States city. The rest of the day, is to rest and relax. The team needs it.

There round of 16 opponent is Drawkland who got a respectable 17- 13 in there season. Both teams are good, but I predict that The Unicorns will win in the end.

Overall, an exciting adventure is ahead and the team needs there rest. Good luck Unicorns.

THE ROCKET REPORT

STRONG QUALIFYING SEASON LEADS TO #2 SEED

by Brianne Henry,

Thanks to a successful 25-5 record over a 30-game qualifying session, the Rockets will be the second seed in the upcoming playoffs in the Equestrian States. They were nearly the top seed, but lost out on a run-differential tiebreaker to the defending champion Super-Llamaland Tigers. That might not have been a bad thing, as that leaves the underachieving Schiltzberg, seeded 9th, in their half of the bracket, and not ours. That is a mere small consolation, however, as Newmanistan will still have to contend, potentially, with nations like Cassadaigua, Nova Anglicana, and West Phoenicia in their own half. That only matters, however, if they get by their first round opponent, the Alpine Union, a very familiar opponent for us since out return.

For only having been back now for our fourth Classic, it seems as though our paths have crossed with the Bisons quite a bit. In World Baseball Classic 38, we met them in the first round of the playoffs, and were able to eliminate them. Then, in World Baseball Classic 40, they were in our group, and astoundingly, the Rockets went 6-0 against them in group play, with six dominant starts by Courtney Duvall. It was in fact, a qualifying performance that got the rest of the world noticing her as one of the true greats. The Rockets head to head performance against the Bisons, and a mediocre 3-3 record against Zwangzug in qualifying, helped the Zebras sneak past the Bisons, and meant that the Alpine Union would not make a trip to Cassadaigua for the playoffs. Duvall will pitch the first game of the series as well, so it will be interesting to see if things will change or if they will remain the same in the two years that have gone by since. The Alpine Union is the #10-ranked team in the world, so forget the fact that they are “just” a 15-seed. They are very dangerous. Just about any baseball analyst, including myself, would say that a team as good as they are, are due to break through against us at some point. Although, maybe they are our new Taeshan. It’s too early to give them that label, and the Rockets were dominant over Taeshan in all sports, not just baseball, so it wouldn’t be a complete comparison.

What you have to like is how the Rockets have been sharp in all aspects of the game during qualifying. This has been an effort that compares very well to the type of dominance that our grandparents and great grandparents were able to enjoy. Those Rockets teams always were able to take care of business, too. Until World Baseball Classic 39, Newmanistan never did any worse then make the quarterfinals, so we were not a nation that was often the victim of an upset, and the World Baseball Classic 39 first round loss saw the Rockets as the underdog. When you look at the numbers, you see that the Rockets scored 197 runs over the course of the 30-games, more then anyone else. The 94 runs allowed were the third fewest, with Super-Llamaland, with Pocono City’s Justin Zheng leading the way, only allowing a stunning 65 runs. The top of the order with Hannah Bates and Lexi Alcorn has been leading the way, just like old times. While the Rockets, like any other dominant team, has power in the middle of the lineup, having two speed-burners at the top has long been a reason for our success, and Bates and Alcorn are a big reason why the team scored so much. There’s a quiet confidence around this team. While some teams stage big clinching parties and exchange champagne showers, the Rockets just exchanged fist bumps, acting like a team that has been there before, and knows that in order to celebrate, you must do a lot more then get a #2-seed.

The Alpine Union will be a threat. Forgetting about previous years, we see that the current roster was able to go 16-14 during qualifying. They were a bit cold down the stretch, going 2-6 in their final eight games, which is actually a little reminiscent of how they coughed up second to Zwangzug in the last Classic. This time, it was just enough to prevail by a game over a tie for third. Other then their record, their run differential is pretty good, given their seed, which should serve as our reminder that they are still the #10-ranked team in the world, and hungry to avenge losses to us.

One of the great things about the World Baseball Classic is all of the great games that get played. So, while you throw your support behind the Rockets, catch a glimpse of these other series that are going on, as well. Here is a quick run through:

(1) Super-Llamaland vs (16) Lisander
– Catch a glimpse of Justin Zheng, pitching against someone else, to see what Pocono City fans have to enjoy. As we well know, it’s not just Zheng that is a dominant pitcher in this staff. We know that the Tigers will beat Lisander, so no reason to root against them here. Sit back, and watch this great baseball nation take care of business. You can root against them later.

(3) Cassadaigua vs (14) Tenburg
– The Dagans had a huge classic, starting off on fire, then hitting some rougher waters, before finishing strong. It’s interesting how they too have been able to climb the ranks, as us old-timers show that we can still get it done against the new crowd. In a fascinating series, they are drawn against Tenburg, the upstart nation who had a campaign pretty much like Cassadaigua’s in that they started well, had a rough patch (though much rougher), but finished off well enough to get this playoff spot. This may be a five-game series.

(4) Scootalove City vs (13) Drawkland
– Drawkland in the World Baseball Classic playoffs reminds me of those years the Rockets qualified for the World Cup (soccer). You saw them in the draw, said “hey cool, guess they play this too”, but you don’t expect them to actually make any kind of serious run. Scootalove City had a pretty tough group that they came out of, and should be able to take care of business in this series. Take a watch of at least one game, if nothing else to realize that Drawkland does have a baseball team.

(5) Frenline Delpha vs (12) Anthor
– Since winning the title, Frenline Delpha has been a little quiet, but they draw a good enough seed here. Anthor always seems to be a perennial playoff team that just can’t take the next step. Not that there is anything wrong with that, because as we see this year, there are several good teams that are not in the playoffs. If you want to pick an upset in the first round, this may be your series.

(6) Nova Anglicana vs (11) Darmen
– A long time ago, Darmen won the World Baseball Classic in Equestrian States. Expect them to have a lot of fans traveling, hoping to rekindle a little magic. They will need too, because Nova Anglicana is a tough first round opponent. They’ve already played each other six times, having met in Group 8, and the Lions will hope to keep going where they left off. Usually, they find their way through the early rounds.

(7) West Phoenicia vs (10) Equestrian States
– This will be one heck of a series. Playing at home, the Equestrian States will have raucous support behind them, as it was a tough job to get here to the playoffs. They even had to go up against Courtney Duvall three times, and did manage to win one of them. Hey, that’s not an insult, that’s an accomplishment, by the way. Playing against the Rockets will get them amped up here. In their way, are the #4-ranked Confederates, who have been the 4th place finisher in each of the last two Classics. They save their best for this time of year, and they will have had to have done so again here.

(8) Ethane vs (9) Schiltzberg
– A thrilling matchup between a couple of champions. Schiltzberg had trouble with Cassadaigua in their group, and end up as the best second place team, at 20-10. They have not had the same mojo as we have seen in prior years, as their fans will learn something valuable this Classic, in that you can’t expect dominance all the time. Sometimes, there will be external factors that cannot just be controlled. Still, they are Schiltzberg. A four-time champion, that knows how to get it done.

Lynch, McGuire Drag Mets Over Hump, Return to Playoffs

It came down to the final leg once again, and once again, Jack Lynch came alive for the Metros, as they won their last three games, including one for all the marbles against Gregoryisgodistan. The greater surprise was the power that Michael McGuire displayed, reminding many of his vintage days. After announcing that he would be retiring after this Classic, it has become apparent that the 41-year-old slugger has decided to let loose and spend everything he has now. Considering that Lynch is bound for the South Charlotte Condors of the ENBL, this Classic will be the last occasion on which the man who is leading all time in NBL homeruns and the man who leads the NBL in hits since he entered the league will play together.

A rather saddening thought, frankly.

The 28th game, in Tallow, saw some late game heroics by the aforementioned gentlemen, with Lynch robbing Brad Thomas of what would have been the go-ahead run in the top of the 8th. Dian Fiore was able to get on base in the bottom of the 9th, when McGuire fired an absolute moonshot which some believe is still flying... it would be somewhere over Crosskeys at this point.

Game 29 saw a blowout of Pavilion Tent, with Lynch batting in McGuire in the 2nd. McGuire would fire a grand slam away in the 6th.

Game 30, against Gregoryisgodistan saw another grand slam, this time in the bottom of the 9th, with two outs. This is by far the most clutch homer that Michael McGuire has ever had.

Tenburg has been placed as the 14 seed for the playoffs. They will face Cassadaigua, who had a much more relaxing trip to the playoffs than the Metros did. The starting rotation for the Mets has yet to be determined.

Victory was sweet and swift that allowed the West Phoenician Confederates their third consecutive progression into the top 16. Will they be able to finish in 4th place or higher this time around as they have in their last 2 appearances?

The road to the finals will be a long journey with the Confederates first going up against The Equestrian States. Both teams strong and fierce and waiting to move forward.

Both teams are evenly matched this season and unfortunately the Confederates face having to take on the host nation. They will of course be outfaned in the stands but that has never phased West Phoenicia, but it sure as hell intimidating seeing more Equestrian fans waving their team logo than West Phoenicia. Knowing the cheers and jeers will be louder from the opposing team.

But the Confederates are here to play ball and they are here to win.

"Whether we have 1000 thousands or just one fan in the stands, we will come out swinging and not rest until the game is done. " Team Manager stated.

"We have great team unity. Our batting is on fine firm and our pitchers are swift and ruthless. It will come down to our fielders and their quick response to responding to the ball and sailing it to the right base for the right affect to stop Equestrian States in their tracks.

Back home in West Phoenicia WP Sports has seen a sharp incline on viewers as millions tune in to support the Confederates and their bid to reach the finals.

The Base Corps' home field has been designated as Hydrogen Cyanide Field, a ballpark housing a massive 50,000. It's nestled in the middle of Drawk City, near the Sports Quarter of the city around the Drawkland River. The field is regularly used by the Drawk City Scouts, but in the offseason it's used by the Base Corps and as a stage for events.
Drawk City being Drawkland's most massive, sprawling city of many millions, travel can get congested, but there are lots of options for travelers. For teams, buses can be used, and there are several charter/private bus companies who are welcoming visiting teams. Traveling by airship is the favorable option for those wanting to see a big slice of Drawkian culture, traveling in the city. The lower left corner of the photo seen above is actually a semi-large dock for boats, which teams can travel in if they feel like it.
Getting to the city also heralds several options. Drawk City has a space port for those from non-Sonnelian regions, and an airport for more "local" travels (say if a team went to a space port with cheaper rates and flew into Drawk City by plane). Travel by boat is possible, but it's all river travel, so the source port will have to be from somewhere else on the Drawkland River or on the coastlines.

Drawkland is quite a cultural and tourism-minded nation, so teams and fans will have much fun in the city before and after the games. A notable item is the very widespread usage of music. Not only can music be heard through the streets, but in all sports games, including baseball, pep bands are a common if not a necessary feature of every game. Playing during gameplay is accepted, so visiting teams may have to take this into account. When on the road, however, the Drawkian pep bands following the Base Corps is more polite and will only play between innings. Drum cadences are crowd favorites.

Choose my runscorers: Yes.
Choose my lineup: My lineup is as specified above.
Follow my pitching rotation: Please do, same order as listed.

The Elite Eleven were garbage, so we kicked them to the curb. Rip.
