Making The Adjustment,
By Maddie Polanco (Manager)

Cassadaigua held a special place in my heart before I even put on this uniform, and it always would have even if I didn’t wear it. Being able to be a part of my home country’s World Baseball Classic 40 win was something I will cherish forever. Super-Llamaland is my homeland, and we did great things last time out. We won the group, and then knocked off some very good teams in the playoffs, especially the later rounds. In the semifinals, we were up against a tough team from Newmanistan who had one of the best pitchers in the game going against us. But I knew that we would not be intimidated. Courtney Duvall put up great numbers during qualifying, but she never pitched against us before. She did well, but we just did a little better. Our reward for eliminating Newmanistan was to play Schiltzberg in the finals. It was surreal, because we were looking for our fourth title, and had to go through both four-time champions in order to do that. Beating Schiltzberg was really special, as it was a matter of payback from World Baseball Classic 37.

During the playoffs, I had been talking to the Cassadagan Association for Baseball, with the blessing from my own nation. It had always been my dream to coach a team at this level, as I always knew that I could. All those late nights a player, studying the pitchers trends, to the work I did as a bench coach, using every possible statistic I could get my hands on. I put my name out there as interested, and I wondered who would possibly give me a phone call. I figured that I might get some aspiring new nations that would express their interest. That’s not how it played out. My first call was from another three-time World Baseball Classic champion. It could not have been an easier decision. It was a perfect fit, almost a too good to be true fit. At the time, we hadn’t won the title quite yet with Super-Llamaland, so the thrill to go to another three time champion was amazing. I knew the country since we were playing there, and culturally, it’s about as good of a fit as a woman could ask for. CAB told me that the current manager was retiring, so I would not be stepping on anyone’s toes, and then they let me finish out my business with the Tigers.

I was able to enjoy countless evenings after the series win against Schiltzberg with my team. It was truly an honor and a privilege to be a part of it. After a couple weeks, the reality of my new undertaking began to set in. I would be coaching a team from a new nation, and I could not wait to get started! At first, I was doing just what I had done before, scouting the players, getting familiar with and looking at how I can maximize the ability of players. We held practices in Concord Heights, and it was a joy. I was proud to be part of this new team, but even at this stage, it did not feel a whole lot different. I had prepared for many World Baseball Classics, and this was just feeling like any other one for a while.

When the groups were drawn, it began to set in. It was time to go to business, and there was Schiltzberg sitting there in our group. I looked over all the groups, checked for my beloved Tigers, and then thought about the mission that I was taking on with the Dagans. A three time champion, looking to win a fourth. Sounds like something I just got finished doing! I liked the group draw a lot, because there was a chance we could be drawn with Super-Llamaland, and I really didn’t want to have to face them so soon, as they still hold a place in my heart. They are in another group, so I can freely wish them the best unless we meet in the playoffs. Even better, I know my old fans are still my fans, because I know they want us to beat Schiltzberg.

The first game was a little relaxing, playing in a new nation known as Azadeshia, and being able to put a four-spot on the board in the top of the first inning definitely made me feel good. We executed in the game brilliantly, just the way I had envisioned it. Now, all the jitters were gone, with the 12-2 win behind us. I knew I could do this, and I knew I had a great team to do it with. Next up was our home opener against Devonta, and this proved to be more of a challenge, but we expected that. It was a dogfight in the early innings, but I was really proud of how we hung in there, and pulled it out in the end.

Next stop: Schiltzberg. This is what it was all about. From the beginning, I knew one of the big reasons that I was brought in here by CAB was to be able to put Cassadaigua over the up from being a very good team to being a championship team. Schiltzberg had the better of the Dagans, but I had the better of Schiltzberg. Did I have secret game plan? No, but it’s one of those mental things. Someone keeps beating you, it can start to play with your head that they have your number. But when you bring in someone who’s beaten them, then not only do feel better, but you are exceptionally confident because you want to show them that things will be different this time. No magic game plan, just mental confidence, and were able to get the 5-3 win. There will be five more meetings, but we know now that we can win this group. How great would that be?

I’m so thrilled to have won my first three games as the head coach, and to have done with this great team. There are many more games ahead, but we look forward to all challenges!

Hampton Island Sports Brief- International Baseball
World Baseball Classic 41

Game 1- Hampton Island 6, Gregoryisgodistan 2

Not only did the Golden Bears make their international debut in this game, they also found an answer to that eternal question as to whether or not there is a God. When the team touched down into the country, they were informed that Lord Almighty Gregory is indeed the answer to that question. Players were stunned to hear this news, and immediately saw fit to worship Gregory in any possible way they could. Most likely due to this respect shown, Lord Almighty Gregory was sure to allow the Golden Bears to pick up the victory. As the team boarded the plane, one of their girlfriends reminded them not to believe everything they hear.

Game 2- Pavilion Tent 7, Hampton Island 6 (10 inn)

What a game this one was! The Golden Bears fell behind by allowing five runs in the bottom of the first, and it looked like they were in hibernation throughout the game. Down 6-1 in the top of the ninth, Hampton Island improbably found a way to tie the game, with all five runs coming with two outs. Bryce Mueller keyed the comeback with a bases clearing triple. Unfortunately, they could not finish this game off, but it would have been awesome if they could have.

Game 3- Tenburg 7, Hampton Island 5

The Golden Bears put up a pretty good fight in this one, but in the end, their inability to contain Jack Lynch cost them the upset victory. Lynch drove in five of the seven runs, almost singlehanded defeating the Golden Bears. Next time they play, don't be surprised if they just intentionally walk him each time and let someone else beat them. After the game, Metros fans burned a car in celebration. I can only imagine what would have happened if they lost.

Summary:
Hampton Island has shown the ability to be competitive. They did score a nice opening day win against Gregoryisgodistan, and with a little more luck, probably could have beaten Pavilion Island as well. Hopefully they can get some momentum going into an upcoming clash with Scootalove City. Yes, that is the name of the national team and not just a city.

Jack tossed back a slug of sports drink, then threw the empty cup across the locker room and into the trash. "Dankmemes don't look too bad."

"Nah," Rory replied as he laced up his cleats. "Not bad at all."

The two froze, as did everyone else in the room, as Diane Fiore opened the door from the shower room, the steam circling around her like some kind of fog machine gag. She had a towel around her body and nothing else.

The whole team looked down and away. They were having trouble getting used to women in the locker room, but it wasn't as if they were being assholes to her or Vivian.

If they were being assholes to Vivian, Jack would have had something to say about it.

"Sorry," Diane said with a chuckle, understanding their discomfort to a point. "Forgot a few things." She strolled over to her locker, grabbed a few bits of clothing, and headed back to the shower.

As she closed the door, the first words came from Michael: "I'd pay 75 million credits for that too."

This got a few laughs, but not the same as it would have gotten last year.

"Speaking of which, boys," he continued, looking to Jack and Rory, "any progress on robbing the world bank?" This got plenty more laughs.

"Well," Rory said, "The Sharks countered your man from Llamaland... I think he said seventy-eight. Tallow has this structured thing where they're gonna pay, like, half a million this year, 2 next, and then the other seventy-nine over the rest of the length."

"How long?" Jack asked.

"Eight years, Jim said it was." Jim was Rory's agent.

Jack whistled. "Damn."

"Yea. And you?"

"Myra said the Lions, Firebirds, Raiders and Sharks are all callin' her... I just let her take care of it."

"No foreign clubs?"

"Yea, what about them hussies in Newmanistan?" Dylan Mahoney added.

A very loud throat clearing was next heard, and everyone looked back in shock to see Diane, now decent, looking with a condescending, cocked head at the fool. "What about those hussies from Newmanistan?"

Jack explained, "My agent, Myra... she's tellin' me a few clubs... y'know, from out that way, are callin' her about me."

"Ahh." She grinned with curiosity. "Who specifically?"

"Well, Condors, uhhh, what was the other. Thoroughbreds, was it?"

Diane chuckled. "That's my old team, you know."

The irony wasn't lost on the team around them, who may have also been laughing because of how narrowly close they were to an awfully awkward situation.
I offer only slanderous mockeries!

Mets move to 4-2; in 4-Way Tie for Lead

It appears the road to the playoffs won't be as easy or effortless as some believe.

Through two series, the Metros are now 4-2, compared to the 3-3 they were at this point last year. They've been playing well on all fronts, save for the first game, which was, again, a disaster for the pitching staff. Scootalove City seems to know how to score runs, as they managed another five in the teams' second meeting, but this time, the Metros were on the right end, scoring 7.

Two games before, the team played Pavilion Tent in Tallow, where the crowd of 59,000 was treated to a special triple play in the top of the 7th--from Jack Lynch in right field, to Diane Fiore at 2nd base, to catcher Conner Curren at home. The Mets won that game 2-1.

Their loss in this leg came at the hands of Gregoryisgodistan. This matchup got particular attention because it saw the debut of Schiltzbergian ex-pat Leo Kaiser, who pitched seven scoreless innings in his first game, although he will also take the loss.

The next game will be in Tomikosan. James Cullen will get the start on the mound.

The Pioneers have made a sudden turnaround, winning their last 3 games after losing their first 3, making them now an even .500.
"Like I said, all we needed to do was reevaluate our playing and practice, and look what happened," said manager John Collins.

The Headquarters of the New Llama Cyclones -- New Llama City

David Windhorst was on the phone again, as he had been more and more often in the past few weeks. Rory Quinlan had been in his sights for a very long time, and he was determined to sign the missing piece in his starting rotation. Quinlan's agent had informed him that the Tallow RiverSharks had countered his latest offer with an eight-year contract, but David Windhorst did not back down very often.

"Hello, Jim?...yes, I've been considering the RiverSharks' offer as well, I still believe six years and the equivalent of seventy-five million credits to be the stronger offer, but I can see how the eight-year deal might be better for Rory...yes, I have a counter-offer prepared, the details are being sent to you right now so you can read through them. It's seven years and eighty-five million credits. Unlike the RiverSharks, we're front-loading it. Let me know if Rory's willing to sign - we won't be going that much more out of our way to bring him to the Cyclones, but it's definitely a very lucrative offer...Thanks. Yes, I'll talk to you then."

So that was that, then, and Windhorst had to be reasonably pleased with the way Quinlan's camp was handling it. They'd been nothing but professional, handling even the attention of one of the world's biggest teams in a composed manner. Even so, the Cyclones GM had reasonable suspicion to believe that the RiverSharks star would be coming over once his contract was up - Tenburg's baseball league just didn't have the money to compete at the moment, and rumors of a number of stars pushing for a move had already begun to pop up - including Quinlan.

This new trend, while disturbing to fans of Tenburg's own baseball league, was an opportunity David Windhorst intended to take advantage of fully. And he'd been succeeding in doing so, with Quinlan already halfway into a Cyclones uniform. The only thing left was taking care of the press...

Alea Iacta Est - Part VII

It was a bit of a new chapter for Alex Cameron, but he'd been loving every minute of it. He'd been in contact with Jorge Villareña again and again, and as a result had finessed himself a new position as the Director of Sports. He was now in total control of not only the national team (of which he remained the manager), but every Hicañan sporting organization on the face of the planet. Alex had always considered himself a bit of a visionary, and this new domain of his - which Villareña assured him Arturo Salvatore would give him full control over - would be the perfect way to lay down his vision of what sports in Hicaña could be.

That didn't mean he had to give up his other job as leader of the Phoenixes. To the contrary, he now had more power than ever to shape his national team - which meant bringing in a number of new players to replace the likes of Jens Marroquín and Martín Zuñiga, both of which Villareña had suggested he take off the team to solidify his control over it. He'd been planning to do so anyways - foreign-based Morgan Hernandez and Carlos Feliz had been on his shortlist for a long time, and somebody had to come off to make room.

The result? A very new-look Phoenixes team hoping to find their way to the Equestrian States. Cameron, by removing the dissidents, had built a balanced, talented, and harmonious squad who could compete with the best of them. And now, it was finally time to see them in action.

Villareña and his AIH hadn't exactly been idle themselves, either. Arturo Salvatore's government, as the intelligence agent had informed Alex, had been at work procuring extra funds for the new republic. "After the whole incident with Wesley Jimenez, I'm not sure if he trusts the sports bureau with all the extra money yet. Besides, we need all the money we can get to rebuild. But we'll keep you updated." It seemed a reasonable course of action for Salvatore to him, even if the internet had been against any plan that didn't rebuild Hicaña immediately with the funds they already had. But he wasn't an expert in politics.

But he was one in baseball. And under Salvatore, he'd been able to do more with his expertise than he ever had before. There was no denying it in Cameron's eyes - Hicaña, for all of its faults, now had one of the best baseball teams in the world.

Buzzards are circling

ST. CATHERINE - After six games in the Blue Jays' return to the WBC, Lycrabon is a dismal 2-4. The low point so far has been a loss to Gratissima, who drew the ire of the entire pitching staff by celebrating after their win. "You don't celebrate a win in the Group Stage like a championship win until you have some success in the Group Stage," commented Hall of Famer Paul Bray. A few of the Blue Jay pitchers have commented that the insult will not go unpunished.

The West Phoenician Confederates continue to power through their grouping. After match 6, they are 5 Wins and 1 Loss placing them in first place with the Empire of Cats and ahead by run difference that sees them straddling first place.

Baseball is well and truly back and so are the ratings for WP Sports 1 that airs the World Baseball Classic Series with a boost of 20% hike in the ratings during playtime.
WP Sports 1 is thankful for the return that has seen a decline in ratings after West Phoenicia pulled its second consecutive win in the Water Polo International Championships.

Fans are turning in by the thousands to cheer on the Confederates who have slowly risen in rank and currently placed 5th overall and still waiting for a title win in the World Baseball Classic. A win many hope is not far away. Management has never been better. And the players are a tight knit group that have pulled off two 4th place wins in the last two seasons.

THE ROCKET REPORT

SIX FOR SIX AND IS IT ONLY LYNCH?

By Brianne Henry,

After another Courtney Duvall victory over Abanhfleft, Newmanistan is looking good in the early stages of the tournament with a 6-0 record and first place in Group 1. It is the best start that the team has had since their return, but with 24 games left to play, let’s not get too carried quite yet. I will cover the games in more detail after I finish something else that is on my mind, and it comes from questioning that I have been getting a lot concerning Jack Lynch and Tenburg.

A big question I get asked is, Is Jack Lynch the only one? If the Loudon Leopards are reportedly very interested in him, are there other Newmanistanian teams out there looking to pluck other players away in this tournament? Surely, there is allure to play in Newmanistan, and while other national leagues also have the same prestige, playing in Newmanistan provides a player with the highest level of competition that they could possibly have with the compensation that comes with it. Just look at Diane Fiore, for example, the backup middle infielder who went to sign in Tenburg due to a contract squabble here. She’s become good enough to play for their national team! There were a lot of nations that published rosters this season, and maybe you get a team like Pocono City, who is yearning to get back to the Rocket World Series, maybe they look to pluck a player off of Abanhfleft. Or a smaller nation such as New Danican. In the past Newmanistanian teams have signed Cassadagan players. May that happen again? Does someone look to get a player from the Equestrian States while they are in the playoffs? Wouldn’t it be interesting for someone to put Starcloud into their lineup, for example? The kids would love to see that! Right now, that is all just speculation. The only name I am hearing legitimately is Jack Lynch with the Leopards, though perhaps another team is lying in the wake. Oh, and that Southport is talking to Super-Llamaland’s Maddie Wagner. She would stay a Tiger that way.

The next question I get asked a lot is how productive Jack Lynch would be in the ENBL. We can see him destroy small island nations, but he was shut down in the playoffs against the Rockets. Sure, he hit a couple over the fence, and no one else got on base for him to make them any more then solo HR’s, but Tenburg still does have a little more to prove as a nation. Most feel they are going to get there and want to crown them World Baseball Classic 44 champions, or something. That does not change the fact that a 162-game regular season is a lot different then the World Baseball Classic, especially the qualifying rounds where there are easier opponents on the schedule. This argument uses Diane Fiore as its exhibit A. How could a player that lost her starting job here, all of the sudden be good enough for the national team over there? We will give her credit for working hard and improving, and hope that is not because of any other reason, but how would Lynch fare here? I think he would do well, but would be a superstar that would justify a big amount of money to convince him to come over here? I am not convinced of that. He might be, and we’ll see how he does in the playoffs.

Kayla Carey, who has been one of the leaders in social media trash talk, particularly surrounding Jack Lynch, is the only one who made a recent comment about that. (Not surprisingly). “Jack Lynch should just stay where he is. He could not handle playing here for a full regular season. He could barely do that for three games.” Carey’s North Charlotte Wildcats are unlikely to be the type of team that would pursue him, and she probably knows that.

Speaking of Kayla Carey, she had a big day in the Rockets 7-2 victory in New Danican. Carey went 4-for-5, and only needed a double for the cycle. She drove in four. Hannah Bates got on base in all five of her bats, including being walked three times. The Lions catch, Grayson Kevinson will have nightmares about her, given she stole five bases in the contest. Bates told reporters after the game that, “I enjoy the stolen bases more when I get walked. That’s when you really know that you are in the pitcher’s head. This was a big game for us. We know what those guys (New Danican) did against Schiltzberg in qualifying in the last Classic. Jessica Gray was sharp on the mound, going all nine innings in the victory.

Following the game against New Danican, the Rockets hosted Equestrian States. The Pocono City Tourism Bureau spent a lot of money in welcoming the Ponies to Pocono City for the game. Said Michael Vicente, president of the Bureau, “We know that they are going to be spending a lot of money welcoming a bunch of nations to their country once the playoffs kick in, so we wanted to roll out the red carpet for them in appreciation here. It’s not easy to host one of these competitions, but in the end it will be very rewarding, and they know that very well. It’s just been awhile for them, just like it was for us.” The Ponies were ready to play, and it was a fascinating back and forth game between these two teams. Kids were fascinated by the likes Blazer, Starcloud, and Apple Daisy, among others. They’ve read about teams like this, but until now, we have not faced a nation like this since our return. Even their parents were amazed, and the young Ponies seemed to enjoy it as well, and perhaps it motivated them a little too much. When Blazer robbed Mallory Harris of a home run in the first, some fans would be lying if they said they weren’t impressed. Pitcher Kaitlyn Carroll spoke of the adjustment, “You prepare for it, and scout them, but once they are in the batters box, it’s different. As the game went on, I got more comfortable. I’ve only pitched to humans in my career so far, so it was not something I was used too.” The Rockets led for most of the first half of the game, but Equestrian States flexed their muscle late. Shannon Spencer could not convert the save opportunity with a 7-6 lead going into the ninth, and surrendered two. Thankfully, Hannah Bates tripled to lead off the ninth, and scored on a sac fly to tie the game. In the bottom of the 10th, after yielding another run, the Rockets got a key three run pinch-hit homer from Rachel Landry, who came up in the ninth spot. The Rockets secured the nail-biting 11-9 win.

Finally, it would be Abanhfleft again, and Courtney Duvall once again. In the first inning this time, there was no robbing Mallory Harris as she went yard to give Newmanistan an early 3-0 lead, and they would never back. With Duvall shutting down her opponents, allowing just three hits and one run through the first seven, Newmanistan pulled away more in the bottom of the 7th to go up 8-1, and were never challenged by the Revolutionaries. Duvall did allow a ninth inning home run, that was a two-run shot that allowed the score to be cut to 8-3. Conventional logic (aka non-Newmanistianian pitching logic) may be thinking, “Hey you know with that Duvall kid? When opponents do actually score on her, you ever notice how often its in the ninth inning when they do? Maybe use your bullpen a little more, Rocket-people.”

Qualifying for the Classic continues today, and the Rockets will keep looking to show that their way works.

The press crowd was bigger this time; partially thanks to more press, and partially thanks to Jack's snickering teammates--including his own wife--who all knew how much he hated dealing with the media if it wasn't of his own accord.

"Any reaction to Kayla Carey's recent posts about you?" one asked.

Jack squinted. "Who?" This got a few laughs, but he was genuinely having trouble remembering. "No I'm serious."

"She plays for Newmanistan, darling," Vivian called over the crowd.

"Ah, right, right. She uh.... she plays for North Charlotte, right?"

He got a few nods in response.

"Well, my agent tells me South Charlotte's had some interest so maybe she's just concerned I'll end up across town." This got a lot of laughs. Jack wasn't bad at handling the press; he just didn't like it. "I mean, I've heard some of what she's said... I think we all know the competition is tough out there, but it's not as if we don't play 170 at home--which actually more than they do I think. But anyway, I'm not that worried about it."

"Jack," a Newmanistanian woman asked, Brienne Henry, who--I dunno if you know who she is..."

"I know of her, aye."

"Okay, anyway she's like one of the most respected journalists in the country and says the only real team attached to you right now that she can find is Loudon. Care to comment?"

"The agent lady's told me that too. I think they're the most prominent because of Duvall; y'know, big name free agent wanting to win a championship sorta deal, But I'd play anywhere, really. I mean I don't think yer girl would want me at North Charlotte, but..." Another few chuckles. "...but there's plenty of clubs out there."

"What's your wife's take on you potentially going somewhere where the teams are mainly made up of women?"

Several of his teammates, including Diane and Vivian, burst out laughing.

"Why don't ye ask her, she's right there." Jack pointed the moron towards her; she was right behind him. He reiterated his question to her.

"Well, I married him partially because I knew he wouldn't do anything stupid."

Jack had to laugh at that one. That's why he loved her.
I offer only slanderous mockeries!

From The Dugout,
By Cortnie Nicholson

After six games of qualifying, our record is as good as one can have it be with six victories. Some people can say that you can’t rest on your laurels after this kind of start, and try to find things that went wrong, despite the wins. That’s not us, though. No one here is getting excited with this start to the point where we will forget how it happened in the first place. Only two other nations have started as well, and coach Polanco will be happy that Super-Llamaland is one of them. The other undefeated team in Newmanistan, who we also have competitive history against. Like I said, it is still way too early for us to start getting analyzing win-loss record across qualifying, especially when you have Schiltzberg in your group. Thanks to their loss to Derring-Do, we have pulled two games ahead of them. That result just goes to show that you must take everyone seriously and that baseball is a game of momentum.

One thing that I have been asked is what is the biggest difference between our old coach, Rachel Friedman, and Maddie Polanco? I think the biggest thing is that Maddie has played in the current game. Note, that I did not say that Rachel did not understand the current game, but Maddie has been a part of it. Rachel had plenty of experience to fall back on, and being part of our World Baseball Classic 19 squad that won a championship drew her instant respect. We gave it to her, and Rachel did adapt to current trends, or so we thought. In came Maddie Polanco, and there has been something that she has done for us, yes. I do not feel that I should come out and say what because there are 47 other media outlets possibly reading this. She has not made any dramatic changes, and in fact our roster and lineup is generally untouched. She simply has some new ideas about getting results out of us, and so far those results have occurred. Maybe this is a product of the new era. Baseball is still baseball, but it can still evolve as a sport.

A second question I get asked a lot is whether or not Maddie talks about her World Baseball Classic 40 championship a lot. The answer is no. We know what she did in the last Classic, and she knows we know. There is a time and a place to bring it up, and it is rarely mentioned by her. She will talk to us about what it meant for her as a person, and that’s the biggest thing. We can see what it has done for her, even in a coaching position, and want to experience the same for ourselves. She is motivated to beat Schiltzberg again, she was very excited to see them in our group this Classic, and knows that we can get that job done. Winning the group is very important. First and second place teams advance, but as we have seen, usually the first place teams are the ones that are getting to the semifinals and beyond.

Still early. But having fun!

"It's the best possible offer you'll ever get, Justin. Nobody has the cap space to offer you more, even if they did want you for that much."

For the first time in years, Justin Zheng was alone. Not just in the physical sense - in that sense he often found himself unaccompanied, as he was now, lying on a hotel-room sofa bed with his roommate James Hao in someone else's room. But in the emotional sense. He'd had his share of dark moments in the past, throughout every setback in his sixteen-year career with the Nandaozhou Sharks. But there were always family members to support him, fans that adored him, teammates that looked up to him, pundits to sing his praises.

There would be none of these now, as the Sharks representative reminded him.

"Justin, you're thirty-five years old. You may be a world-class pitcher, but nobody is going to give you more than three years. Three years and thirty-nine million dollars, front-loaded. It's the best anyone will get."

Justin inhaled, closing his eyes. Three deep breaths. "This isn't about that."

"Is it about legacy, then? You take the contract, you pitch three more years in your hometown, you retire a hero. This doesn't have to be difficult. You're making an easy decision much more difficult than it needs to be. You think you're the best Sharks player of all time, and yeah, maybe you are. Do you think the fans will think that if you take a big contract and pitch the Cyclones to a title? You're delusional."

"I'm not going there. I'm not going to another LBL team."

"So you're just going to retire? Is that it? You still have a few years. A few shots to actually win something for your hometown, contribute in any meaningful sense to-"

"I'm coming back. Don't worry."

"FU-" Justin hung up, waited a few seconds to calm down, then dialed his agent.

"Hey Erika...yeah, things are going alright...they were just on the phone with me, I turned them down...what? No, of course I'm not taking the Cyclones deal. Listen, Erika, I need you to do me a favor. Get me out of the country. Schiltzberg, Newmanistan, wherever, it doesn't matter. A two-year deal once my Sharks contract expires at the end of the season, and then I head back to Nandaozhou, okay? Yeah...great. Perfect. Let me know how it goes."

He was alone for the first time in sixteen years. But more than that, he was free.

Banijans celebrate their first win of the World Baseball Classic

Banija win their first game of the World Baseball Classic as they are 1-5 after 3 games

JINJA CITY- There is not much chance that Banija makes the knockout stages of the World Baseball Classic now. The unranked side has had a terrible start to the tournament, losing their first 5 games of play. But, of course, they weren't supposed to do much now. This tournament was about laying the seeds for reviving baseball within Banija. There isn't much pressure on Ethanian manager Raymound Cloutier- they know that a team filled with college baseball players isn't going to have much of a chance, over the course of 30 games, of defeating the world's best sides. Of course, being competitive would be nice.

Of course, the pitching hasn't been terrible. They have been getting good performances from the starting 5, though putting this extremely young bullpen into big spots has been troublesome, though that is expected on a team where the oldest player is 24 years of age. The bullpen has definitely been the weakling, but this is good experience for them in 4 years, when another World Baseball Classic will come around. Regardless, Banija lost their first 5 World Baseball Classic games, though finally won one, a 3-1 victory over former regional rivals Devonta.

The bats though, are asleep. They have only scored 14 runs through 6 games, which is tied for the second fewest in the whole tournament, with Danica only scoring 13 runs through the first 6 games. The interesting part, even though Banija's bats have been silent, is that Banija has not been shutout in this tournament. They have scored in every single game. But they have been very inconsistent, and unlike convention, pitchers are getting better against them as the game goes on, and they cannot do anything against bullpens. Banija has not scored a single run in the 5th inning or later in this entire tournament. This team is putting up between 1 and 4 runs a game, and they are not putting up many. They will need to score deeper in games if they want to do anything, or this will end up being one of the worst teams in this entire tournament, if not the worst. They cannot survive with that kind of record.

Their matchday 4 and 5 losses were a simple case of the opposing team being better than the Banijans. While Banija took an early 1-0 lead in Matchday 4 thanks to an RBI single by switch hitting catcher Fabba Marenah, their hosts tagged them for 3 in the bottom half of the 2nd and another run in the 4th, as the Banijan bats fell silent. On Matchday 5, back to back solo home runs by Alanso Jallow and Jebel Sowe gave Banija a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st, but those were Banija's only runs of the game, as lefty Lallo Ndiaye allowed 3 runs through 5.2 innings, and Demba Branco allowed two more in the 8th inning.

Matchday 6 finally saw Banija win a game as the staff finally put a full game together. Banijan ace Musa Sidibeh pitched 6 innings for his second quality start of the tournament, as he scattered 4 hits and a walk among 8 strikeouts and 1 earned run, across 115 pitches. Then, of course, the bullpen finally stood tall. Lefty Karamo Jammeh pitched a 1-2-3 7th, then Demba Branco pitched a perfect 8th, and Abu Kayode closed out the game by allowing a 1 out single in the 9th, but immediately getting the next batter to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to get his first save of the tournament, and Banija's first win.

In their next set of 3, of course, they have decent starting pitching coming up to the plate. They will need to get some offense from these bats. 14 runs through 6 games, including not a single run in the 5th inning or later, will simply not get it done at this level. We'll see if Raymond Cloutier tries to mix anything up, and bring some spark to this dead Banijan offense before the tournament really gets away from them as we move to the middle stages of this group stage.

Hampton Island Sports Brief- International Baseball
World Baseball Classic 41

Game 4- Scootalove City 4, Hampton Island 3

It happens again! The Golden Bears fall behind early, rally in the ninth to tie, but then blow it afterwards. This time, they have a tough loss to swallow against the Scootalove City team after playing fairly good baseball. We had to wonder about this late inning heroics though, which is good when they lead to win, and not just lead to a tie, and then us blowing it. Manager Matthew Davis told us that, "If there was an easy solution, I would have the answer. It is good that we are showing some character out there in coming back like this late in games. However, they need to result in wins. It would also be nice if we did not have to stage a comeback late in a game in the first place. We must be better right from the start."

Game 5- Hampton Island 6, Tomikosan 4

In this game, the Golden Bears again fall behind, this time 4-1, but do not wait until late in the game to begin the comeback. Maybe then, this is a sign of improvement. With one in the fourth, and three in the fifth, the latter coming thanks to a three run triple off the bat of Adam Voorman that cleared the bases with two outs, Hampton Island took a 5-4 lead, and added insurance an inning later to secure a 6-4 win.

Game 6- Gregoryisgodistan 6, Hampton Island 3

The Golden Bears were not able to win a second straight game over the Gregoryisgodistan team, but they did manage to score in the ninth inning again. The result puts the team at 2-4, and they are in fifth place. It's tight at the top of this group as four of them are tied for first. It looks like a fun tie, and we would like to join it, but in order for the Golden Bears to be more of a threat, they are going to have to play complete nine innings of solid baseball. They have shown flashes at times, but that is not going to be enough.

Surprising Islanders in Third at Group Stage
Baseball is in full swing with The Davidan Islands as the new International team has struck out on its on. The Islanders who are lead by hard hitting Cruz Davenport and hard throwing Duke Cavanaugh, the tea has mustered up a respectable 3-3 record. the first three games would not hae given any indication as a 1-2 start was on the books. a 9-2 loss to overall #2 Lamaland saw Lamalandian Sofia Rasmussen score two Home Runs and pitcher allowed only four hits (though two runs scored). the second leg of the tournament was better with a 2-1 record by the Islanders. A win over New Sangti that saw Norell Tyner throw a 3 hitter boosted confidence and a 5-3 win over New Sportland which saw Cruz Davenport hit two triples, the momentum was high. But it all came crashing down when Sandberg pitchers combined for a 1 hitter and Sandberg won 5-0. As the second leg of the qualifiers take place hopefully familiarity would make the games closer. That will be seen in the upcomin weeks.

Foreign Duo leading the Thunderheads Struggle to Find Success
The Llamalandian coaches brought in during the offseason to help lead Anthor to playoffs have met a bed of woes so far
SHARE THIS:
Clifton Pierce (@CliffsPier)(TH)
Rielat 15, 602AE 1:00 PM | Vaumort, Anthor

Vaumort, Anthor(Herald) — After we have gotten through the first six games of this year's World Baseball Classic, many fans, and even some of us, are beginning to continue our criticism of the ABL's decision to have a foreign manager coach this year's team; six games in, and we're split even at 3 wins and 3 losses but two of those losses have come at the hands of teams we should have beaten readily.

After the conclusion of last year's WBC, where for the fourth time the Thunderheads failed to qualify for the playoffs, ABL President Irwin Victors announced in a joint press release where he was joined by the Minister of Sports that Jacob Adler would not be offered a new contract to remain on as manager of the national team, and that they had begun the job hunt for a new one abroad. The decision was met with a roar of discontent, though not as overpowering at first, mainly because most of those upset were fans of Adler who many credit with helping baseball gain enough traction within the Kingdom for the formation of the League, and also argued that the lack of a stable foundation from the League, which has now just finished it's second season, hindered Adler's performance because the players available were still developing in terms of skill.

After two months of searching, the League and Ministry had announced that the Llamalandian by the name of Colin Nittledeen had been offered a three year, seventeen million pound offer to act as the manager of the Thunderheads, which he accepted. His first move was the firing of pitching coach Bernard Clarke, bringing on a former staff member of his own and fellow Llamalandian Jeremy Callahan- both of them come from an established degree of success within their home domestic leagues, though they've struggled to find more in recent years and many question the ABL for not bringing on someone slightly more developed. Somewhat surprisingly, Nittledeen did not alter the roster much at all, keeping the selections for who would play in this Classic nearly identical as the ones selected last year, and many are hoping that isn't the reason for the lack of success here.

In particular, we are seeing stronger outings from the starting roation, everyone from Noah Clarke to Nathan Flynn are having decent outings, however Nittledeen seems to be a fan of enabling himself to use the bullpen earlier and often, and the lack of offensive run support from our own side and a failure to remain competitive from the bullpen has led to three bad losses - Frazer Donaldson in particular has taken two of three of those losses and has an ERA nearly in the 6's.

THE ROCKET REPORT

HANNAH TO THE RESCUE

by Brianne Henry

One of the most difficult parts of managing a team of the nation’s best players while you also manage one of the teams individually, came in Matchday 7 prior to the game in New Jarwel for Rockets manager, Ashley Stevens. Planning out the batting lineup, preparing scouting reports, and utilizing your pitching staff are all great skills that any manager must have at this level, but they don’t quite have a scouting report for what happened.

Prior to the game, probable starting pitcher Jennifer Hughes complained of having some soreness in her elbow. Hughes said it was not that bad, but that it was present, and she wanted to pitch anyway. In a domestic game, it’s not a difficult decision, you put her on the mound and see how it goes for a few innings, before deciding whether to take her out, or keep her in the game. Not when you’re coaching the international team. Jennifer Hughes, in Newmanistan, puts up numbers that are not much different then Courtney Duvall. She is the second best pitcher in the Empire, most will say, though she has won the Keisler Award herself. The big difference between Duvall and Hughes for coach Stevens is a very big one. Duvall is her own pitcher, for the Loudon Leopards. Hughes is property of the Jessicaville Millionaires. Not only are the Millionaires one of the top teams in the ENBL, with big pockets like you’d gather from their team nickname, they are also a rival of the Leopards. On the national team, you will always co-exist because you play for the country, but if a mistake was made by Stevens in using Hughes when Jennifer complained of elbow soreness, and Jennifer suffered a worse injury because of it, all hell would break loose between these two organizations. No, there are no scouting reports or sabermetrics for that.

Stevens did what she, and mostly any other coach would do, and had her evaluated by the training staff. Which of course, was her own training staff from the Loudon Leopards. The result of the evaluation did not particularly help with the situation. “We see some slight swelling, but it is nothing all that bad. She can pitch, and would not be affected by the soreness in terms of her velocity or with her breaking pitches, but it may limit the amount of pitches that she can throw. I would say its two-thirds, let her pitch and see what happens, and one-third make an alternative arrangement.” What a brutal report. Couldn’t it have just said “yes” or “no”? Of course, it has to lean towards letting her pitch. It would have been easier if it leaned the other way. She would ask pitching coach Tracianne Conti, but she too, was a Loudon Leopards coach.

Ashley Stevens had just one option left. And she hated it. Call the Millionaires and ask for their opinion. What a sign of weakness that would show in her ability to evaluate such injury situations, but she had to do it. The Millionaires had millions invested in Hughes, and she realized that she would want this call if the shoe was on the other foot. She just hated to talk to Jessicaville. There was no one in the league with a more arrogant front office, but at least if they said they did not want her to pitch, it would be easier to go to Jennifer and tell her that her team did not want it to happen. The call was not easy, as at first, the Millionaires accused her of not wanting Jennifer to pitch because of a personal bias, but once she was able to convince of them of the complaint that Hughes was having, the answer was a very emphatic, “No!”

At least the emphasis of the rejection would make it easier to tell Jennifer, who took the news unusually well. So, now with that out of the way, came the decision on who to start in this game. Do you go to the next starter in the rotation? Ashley pondered that, until it clicked, “Why not Hannah?”

Hannah, would be Hannah Lee. The young pitching phenom who was drafted #1 by the South Charlotte Condors a few years back, and has already begun to turn that team around. At 19, Lee was part of the World Baseball Classic 40 team, but in the bullpen and not given many pressure situations. It was designed to give her the experience of playing for the national team. She was given “garbage innings” early on, but as the playoffs went on, you started to see her in more meaningful situations. So far during this Classic, Lee had not been used that much, and should be rested to make this start. Ashley did not want to use the, “it’s only New Jarwel” reasoning, but clearly, “it’s only New Jarwel” had a lot to do with it.

Stevens called Lee into the office,

“Hannah, are you ready to pitch today?” Stevens asked.

“That’s what I am here for!” Lee responded like one would expect.

“How about start?” Stevens asked with a sly grin.

Lee was not expecting that. “Oh wow, yeah definitely! Start today?”

“Yeah, Jennifer can’t go today. Slotting you in here means I don’t have to do anything with the rest of the rotation. If you can’t go all nine, we’ll figure something out. But this is your moment. I know you’ve wanted this chance, and I know what you can do with it. It’s all yours.” Stevens said.

“Wow! I’m so happy. Hopefully Jennifer is ok though, is it because of last night?” Lee asked.

Stevens raised her eyebrow. “Last night? What do you mean by that?”

Hannah’s face turned a bright red, knowing she just accidentally said too much. Stevens looked in her eyes, and could tell Hannah knew she put herself in an awkward situation, and intervened. “It’s ok, Hannah. I was a player, too. But you know, I need to know now. I won’t let anyone know my source. Promise.”

Hannah gulped. “She was drunk and dancing on the bar and someone dared her to do it on one leg. She slipped and fell off the bar and landed on her elbow of her pitching arm.”

Stevens shook her head, grinned and laughed for a couple seconds, then shook her head again. “Well, maybe that’s not bad. Trainers didn’t find any injuries, so it means its something that will go away. Hannah, please don’t dance on bars, or do a better job of it, if you do.”

Hannah smirked thought about just leaving but decided to say it anyway, “I did! I didn’t fall!”

Stevens grinned, “Good, you’re younger so you’re more in tune with the latest moves. Now focus on New Jarwel!”

Hannah was definitely ready for New Jarwel. Striking out the side in the first inning, and two out of three in the second. She was loving this opportunity, and then loving the run support she got in the third inning to extend the lead to 5-0. It came from her rival at home, Kayla Carey from North Charlotte, who hit a three-run double. Continuing to mow down the New Jarwel batters, she was perfect through four, though the perfect game talks were erased on a single in the 5th. No worries, he’d be erased on a double play just a couple pitches later. The team was enjoying seeing Hannah be so dominant, and she would go the distance, and only allow three hits for the game. Not a single run was surrendered, and fourteen batters were struck out. New Jarwel was completely overmatched, as they could not prepare for what they faced today, as after all they thought they were going against another pitcher. Perhaps this is a sign of things to come for young Hannah Lee, and her first Classic start will go down as a major success. Lee enjoyed it. It was nice to get run support. She doesn’t always get that with South Charlotte, a team that could really use a powerful bat in the middle of their lineup.

This leaves Stevens with another tough decision. What do you do with Hannah, now?

Hampton Island Sports Brief- International Baseball
World Baseball Classic 41

Matchday 7- Pavilion Tent 6, Hampton Island 1

In a frustrating manner, the Golden Bears were soundly beaten by the other unranked nation in the group. It is pretty demoralizing to the team to see Pavilion Tent having this success while we have not been getting the results. Nothing went right for the team, and manager Matthew Davis attempted to shake things up late in the game, to no avail.

Matchday 8- Tenburg 12, Hampton Island 7

The Golden Bears were true to their word in intentionally walking Jack Lynch every time he stepped up to the plate, even though this royally backfired in the fifth inning when Kyle Shanahan hit a grand slam right behind him. About the plan, Davis admitted, "We may have overthought things by walking that guy (Lynch) each time. We may not utilize that game plan next time. The crowd in Tenburg loudly booed the walking of their superstar, which was joined in on by Golden Bears fans at home when it was done even after the Shanahan grand slam.

Matchday 9- Scootalove City 4, Hampton Island 2 (11 inn)

Another extra inning affair against this top ranked team, but another loss. The frustration continues. With the team now 2-7, enthusiasm is waning, and this paper is considering that sending a reporter to these games might not be worth it.
