OOC Thread

The Trans-Newtonian Elements, first discovered by British physicist Jane Richardson in April 2017, are a set of eleven elements that have completely revolutionised physics as the world understood it. Fundamentally, the Trans-Newtonian Elements are different from regular matter in the way that they almost seem to exhibit Aristotelian behaviour. This is because the Trans-Newtonian Elements interact strongly with the mass-space field, and consequently experience drag when in relative motion against a large celestial body.

Despite the fact that these elements were only found in significant quantities deep underground and was therefore technically challenging to extract in commercial volumes, given the obvious industrial applications, large investments were rapidly made available, and Trans-Newtonian Elements as well as associated technology was soon integrated in more and more meaningful ways into the complex and volatile mesh that was world industry.

The mass-space field was, as its name may suggest, closely tied to the structure of space itself, and thus Trans-Newtonian Elements could, on the scale of quantum mechanics, distort distances across the cosmos. With a relatively straightforward method of faster-than-light communications now available, the global telecommunications network was completely revolutionised, with a predictably positive effect on the global economy. Furthermore, the control that this communication gave Earth over probes across the solar system was vital in the creation of a more effective space exploration program.

It was really these elements that sparked the beginning of the second space race. With sufficient energy, Trans-Newtonian Elements could "push" on the mass-space field as well as be dragged down by it, and human spacefaring was liberated from the tyranny of the rocket equation. Space travel on a large scale was suddenly viable, and the previously ignored natural resources of space were suddenly the forefront of international policy.

Now, the United Confederation has announced that they were planning an "imminent" launch of their new deep space probes using Trans-Newtonian technology, and both the Pact of Collective Security and the Asian Defence Coalition are seething in jealousy.

For better or for worse, the discovery of Trans-Newtonian Elements have pushed humanity into a new and interesting era...

Johnson Space Centre
2025 January 02nd 08:47

"...three, two, one, liftoff."

In what some people were calling the most televised event so far in the twenty-first century, three NASA probes of the explorer-class lifted off from Johnson Space Centre at 08:48 UTC on the 2nd of January, 2025, as the United Confederation celebrated the 31st anniversary of the Articles of Confederation. The probes has been ready for a couple weeks now, but the launch has been delayed until now. First, there was the obvious public relations benefit to timing the launch to coincide with the anniversary of the Articles of Confederation, and second, the engineers at NASA wanted to check and re-check every component, making sure that nothing could possibly go wrong in this first demonstration of Trans-Newtonian spacefaring.

It was still night in Texas, and the blue-white plumes of the new engines, modest they might be compared to the hulks of the early space age, shone brightly and visibly.

It was a glorious night for the United Confederation. Although the technologies involved were ramshackle in nature, representing only superficial improvements and integrations of Trans-Newtonian technologies to older rocket models, what the public saw was not the technological weaknesses of the rockets, but rather the potential that the Explorer missions represented.

Humanity was once more going out into space, and at the forefront of the new frontier stood Commander Jonathan Reed of GEV Explorer 001, Commander Chris Drake of GEV Explorer 002, and Commander Ben Barlow of GEV Explorer 003.

The other two superpowers were yet to respond to this historic event. No doubt their public relations crews were working overtime, trying to salvage what they could from what was undeniably a solid loss of prestige for their respective causes. Perhaps they would release a statement soon, but then again, they might not.

Somewhat less than five minutes after the launch, the world's media was still glued to the footage sent back to Earth from the receding probes. The increasingly small Earth visible from the cameras of GEV Explorer 001 captured the imagination of the world's public.

"First stage clear. Probes on route."

With the successful launch, and the probes well on their way to their respective destinations, Houston erupted in celebration. So did many of Earth's cities. Today, just for a day, people would be willing to put their ideological differences aside to cheer on what was clearly a great victory for all humanity. Even with the launch over, very few people turned off their televisions. The projected time from Earth to Luna was a mere one hour and forty-five minutes, and soon, they would see man returning to the moon once again after over fifty long years.

The journey to Mars that GEV Explorer 002 was undertaking was projected to be a bit longer. A few weeks, in fact. But in not very long at all, Commander Jonathan Reed would be the first man to step foot on the red planet.

These were exciting days.

"Commander Reed, this is Houston speaking. How are you feeling this fine day?"

GEV Explorer 02 Luna

Space,
GEV Explorer 02 Luna,
2025 January 02nd 10:13

Several hours ago the ship and its crew were sitting on a launch pad, staring at the sky as they waited anxiously for the count down to start. Several Minutes later they were blasting in to the Sky, ready to punch a hole straight through heavens gates. About 20 minutes later they were in a stable earth orbit, several more minutes later they were exiting the stable orbit enroute to the Moon. Approximately 2 minutes later, Dr. Abraham Robinson through up in his bag. About 3 minutes later Security Detail commander Aaron Raymond cut his finger trying to unbuckle his seat belt. At exactly 9:59 and 32 seconds commander Chris Drake gave the all clear for the rest of the crew to unbuckle their seat belts. In approximately 13 minutes the GEV Explorer 02 Luna would enter the moons gravity and around 19 minutes later would touch down on the moons surface and begin its operations.

Chris stood at his bunk. 'This is where I'll be for the next half a decade' he thought to himself. He dropped his stuff in his private room, before heading off to inspect his crews quarters, they had 2 minutes and 11 seconds to finish getting their stuff together, before going into their jobs for today. He began walking through the ship taking a quick walk through the long hallways before arriving at the crew quarters. "5..." his crew began to drop their stuff and fall into line "4..." some stragglers began to drop their things "3..." one of the crew members (Geologist Eric Kowalski) got is zipper stuck in his bag "2..." he jerked it off the bag, "1..." he lunged forward, "0..." Kowalski jumped into attention. "Mr. Kowalski, can you please explain why you were late."
"Excuse me, sir?"
"You were approximately 1 second late. You do know what the consequences for being late to a meeting are?" Replied Chris.
"Uhhh... no I don't... sir."
"Well, you'll have your pick of sanitation or dish duty."
"But it was one second!" Complained the geologist.
"Consider this your first and only warning then." Said Chris. "Lets make this clear, we have a job to do and we will get it done. When you are told to do something, you do it. When you are asked a question you answer. I will not have insubordination aboard my ship, is that clear."
"Yes, sir!" Replied the group in unison
"Alright, now lets begin."

Lunar Surface,
GEV Explorer 02 Luna,
2025, January 02 10:36

Just after putting all their stuff away and getting their assignements, the crew reported to their seats on the top deck and prepared for landing. They stared out the window gawking at the moon, a wave of amazement rushed through the group as they finally processed where they were. The crew consisted of 52 people, 2 pilots/drivers, 5 security officers, 5 medical staff, 1 commander (Chris Drake) and 4 subcommanders, 15 engineers, and 20 scientists. As soon as the ship touched down. They all stared in aw.
"Alright. I know this a big moment for all of us. However we do need to get started, don't worry everyone will get to go out on the surface atleast once during this mission."
The two pilots fist bumped each other since they knew they would get to go out almost every day since they were also the rover drivers.
"Alright so you have another 30 minutes to finish getting everything organized before we report to the meeting room on the 3rd deck for our safety briefing and welcome to the moon."
He left the seating area as he made his way to the communications room and sent a message to the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

We Have Safely Landed, Can't Wait To Start Work, Everyone Safe.

Ile-de-France
Kapitan vtorogo ranga Charles Gifford Girard,
Commanding Officer, the ILB Missile Complex (Ile-de-France)

His office was equipped with a dinky little audiovisual rig, spitting out feeds to four different monitors. It looked like something out of a movie, as old as it was, but its internals would shame most AtCon engineers. It was a top-of-the-line security monitor, with three of the screens living on an isolated network that connected the ILB with the outside world 24/7, and the other on yet another isolated network that fed the ILB with up-to-date monitor information from Ile-de-France's scientific institutions and radar installations. Airgapped from the ILB's systems itself, including its secure communications system, its only interfaces were visual. One of the screens played a feed from France Info, a public broadcaster. Another played Russia Today. A third scrolled through a variety of British news sources, although it generally lingered on the ailing BBC.

The last monitor was currently playing a relayed signal from the other side of the world - a spy satellite, the fortunate device that had seen the NASA three-vessel launch. Kapitan Girard had, for a while, been scratching his chin so thoroughly he'd drawn blood. A light in the office flickered - a faulty bulb that on any other day would have been spotted courtesy of its irregular powerdraw, and repaired within the hour. The whole four hour ordeal would not see the bulb replaced. It was about 15:50 when the launches took place. He'd be here until 8pm watching the launch. There'd be another two or three hours writing reports, reviewing what they could find of the trajectory of the remaining two rockets. It'd be a boon for the SocIntern missile defense system. So much rich data. He'd spend another hour or two somewhere in that debriefing his shift and briefing the next - likely heavily offset. They'd have to run with two crews through the night. He'd spend another hour or two staring at the ceiling with his head in his palms.

Here, in the heart of the revolution, was where some of its most ardent supporters worked. To even set foot in the door required security clearances that some army officers wouldn't pass; let alone with a commander as unpopular as Charles the Defector. His personnel were scrutinized extensively, unendingly, for their loyalties, their competence, their politicking. Every single thing they did was documented meticulously, and Charles' clearance recommendations were airtight, every time. They had to be.

On all of Charles' channels were all the streets of the world; people watching on the Times Square billboard, in the middle of Beijing, and London, and Paris, and Addis Ababa - even, some rumoured, on the outskirts of Moscow itself. There was joviality, and cheering, and awe. There was, perhaps, nowhere else in the world that man's second steps on the moon were met with as much solemnity. It was a night of mourning.

He prepared a folder, to be faxed directly to the relevant parties.

"Incident Reports 1-3A01022025 - Implications of the GEV Explorer 01-3 Launches for European Nuclear Readiness. Bottom-line: 'It is in the opinion of Kapitan Charles Girard, as commanding officer of the ILB Missile Complex, that the GEV Explorer 01-3 launch vehicle has proven to be highly successful at both escaping Earth orbit and returning from the Lunar surface. It is unknown whether the launch vehicle has been, or can be, militarized for use from Northern European launchsites. The ILB Missile Complex wishes to express that a top-level policy response to the launch is the highest-urgency concern facing SovIntern nuclear readiness.'"
If I can't play bass, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

Luna (the Moon),
2025 January 06th, 00:39 UTC

Image

All the global fanfare and hype that defined the first few hours of Commander Drake's mission rapidly dyed down, and even the footage of him stepping on the moon again failed to hold the news for more than a few hours. Now, on the fifth day of their mission, things were already starting to settle down into a sort of a routine. The crew was happy to have some peace and quiet for once. Not having cameras shoved in one's face was pretty nice, all things considered.

The chief geologist, however, was not feeling happy. They've scoured the surface of Luna from pole to pole using their ship's equipment, and they didn't find anything more than trace quantities of Trans-Newtonian elements. The Commander's enthusiasm was initially quite contagious, and everyone was eager to start work on the first day. But after a few days of unsuccessful scouting, people's patience were starting to wear thin and genuine enthusiasm slowly devolved into a forced cheer.

Well, the chief geologist thought. There's still the possibility that a follow-up mission will be able to catch something that we missed. There's something disappointing about the possibility that Earth's partner and satellite is... so barren.

The geologist sighed, and went up to report as the engine roared and the ship began to move again. The Commander would want to know. At least he wasn't the type to blame nature's misfortunes on his men. If the Commander was going to be disappointed, well... he probably wouldn't be angry. Not at him, in any case.

The ship descended into the Venusian atmosphere. The beige winds swirled around it, and the ship rattled with the pressure. After the calm of empty space, it was quite a change. The stars slowly faded away from view as the ship gently lowered itself, and the planet rose up beneath it. The temperature gauge clicked above three hundred degrees Celsius and the crew was just feeling toasted, even though the ship's air conditioning was perfect.

The engineers assured the crew that the hull was plated against sulfuric acid, high atmospheric pressure, heat, or almost anything else one might find on a terrestrial planet, for that matter. It was supposed to be quite impervious to anything that the Solar System's least habitable planet could throw at it. Theoretically.

The crew sincerely hoped that the engineers were right. In a sense, they were profoundly jealous of the crew of GEV Explorer 001, under Commander Reed, most of whom were probably playing cards in deep space right around now, not suffering to keep electronic equipment working under a storm of chemicals. Two weeks after launch, GEV Explorer 001 was still piddling its way to Mars with not a care in the world, whereas for GEV Explorer 002, this was already their second exploration and prospection mission.

"Alright," clapped the operations officer, trying to maintain a semblance of good cheer. "Let's get to work."

United Nations Headquarters
New York City, Earth
2025 January 22nd, 14:30 UTC

"Honourable representatives and respected guests, please welcome Secretary General Jen Kasse to the stage."

A thunderous applause. Then calm again.

"Thank you, thank you," greeted an old man, as he slowly made his way to the podium, "and good morning, respected representatives."

"I am pleased to be standing here once more addressing the General Assembly, here at the beginning of the fourth year of my term as Secretary-General. I am pleased to be here, doing my own small part for the security and welfare of a world that has never been healthier, better educated, more prosperous, or freer. I am pleased to lead this auspicious organisation at a time when humanity is venturing further than ever before, broadening our horizons of scientific understanding both metaphorically and physically."

"The world stands well on track to accomplish the goals that many thought unreasonably optimistic a mere ten or twenty years ago - goals set for the betterment of human welfare. Not a soul doubts now that we can make large-scale extreme poverty a thing of the past. The efforts, not only of the auspicious organisation which I am proud to represent, but also of the world's struggling people themselves and the many kind-hearted souls who saw it within them to help, made in the common name of a better tomorrow has delivered millions from a sorrowful existence."

"The diseases that have claimed so many lives in the days of those who came before us are now all but eliminated. Concentrated public health and education programs in the world's poorest countries have ensured that although many may continue to fall through life's many ills, nobody will ever die for lack of a fifty-cent shot of penicillin. The amount of human suffering that isn't happening today boggles the mind, when one truly puts his mind to think about it."

"And let us not pretend that these improvements have only been for the world's poorest, for they are not. In our increasingly interconnected world, prosperity and health for the world's most unfortunate means stability, safety, and freedom for everyone."

"I am, however, not so pleased to be an inhabitant of a world that continues to be so bitterly divided over the most inconsequential of conflicts."

"The great powers of the world continue to threaten, pointing their instruments of mass destruction and suffering at each other and at those unable to protect themselves. Nuclear armaments has been a scourge of international affairs since they first emerged in the Second World War, and it certainly remains a scourge now. We have accomplished so much, we have come so far, and yet all that it will take to bring everything back into fire and ash is the temporary loss in one person's judgement, an electronic error in decades-old software, or even an outright accident."

"I am sure that I have the agreement of many when I conclude that this is an intolerable state of affairs. It is about time that we begin to discuss a world free of this terror, wound tightly to spring upon the world at a moment's notice. It is about time that we discuss a more peaceful, post-nuclear world."

"I invite the representatives of all nations, whether they be in possession of nuclear armaments or not, to come together and find common grounds in our interests. It is well understood that no country can unilaterally disarm itself without being eclipsed by other nations, but perhaps together, we will be able to find some mutually agreeable solutions to the problem of mutual disarmament."

"For our future, and for the world that our children will inherit, I urge all of you to follow in the spirit of our fathers and forefathers, who have through co-operation accomplished such great things."

"Thank you very much."

It's mission completed, the ship slowly launched itself away from the swirling clouds of Venus. The crew was feeling quite happy about that, in fact. These twelve days that they have spent on Venus has not been friendly to them at all. For the little exploration ship jumping between the surface and the low atmosphere, Venus was hell, and the various problems the planet caused the ship's delicate systems was even more of a hell for the increasingly exhausted crew.

Now, they were away. Hopefully to never return. The ship's operations officer opened the report handed to him by the chief geologists. Annoying scientists, she thought, dropping things on my desk without telling me. But they were, in a sense, the ship's reason for existence, and so they had to be obliged - by her, at least. The Commander seemed to have no problems at all keeping the big brains very tightly in line.

She sighed, and opened up the folder, skipping straight to the conclusion. She wouldn't understand the rest of it anyways. A figure immediately jumped out at her. A couple of figures, actually. 4.7 million tons of duranium and 1.9 million tons of corundium. That was over six million tons of exploitable materials, all considered, that the geologists found on Venus.

She kept reading, suddenly interested.

"...but with most of these estimated reserves being located deep in the planet's interior and being highly diffused, it is likely that the extraction of these reserves will be difficult at the current level of extraction technology."

With a wave of disappointment crashing across her mind, she tossed the report back on her desk. She knew from experience, working back on Earth, that "difficult" to a scientist meant "impossible" to an engineer.

Another bust, as far as she - or the United Confederation as a whole - was concerned. The eggheads could celebrate their so-called "great find" as they liked, but Venus was not going to be a source of Trans-Newtonian elements for the United Confederation's industry anytime soon.

Sighing, the ship's operations officer rose from her desk. Commander Chris Drake would want to know the contents of that report. It was terribly unfortunate that she would have to disappoint him again. Hopefully he can keep his reactions restrained.

(boring OOC reports - not necessary reading)

During the month of January 2025, the United Confederation focused their entire industrial effort towards industrial modernisation, constructing 5 construction facilities and 3 mines. 396,000 litres of fuel were refined, which is far higher than their current needs.

Their reserves of all eleven Trans-Newtonian elements increased, with production being higher than consumption. The element with the lowest surplus was sorium, the stockpile of which increased by two tons in the past month, which was used primarily in fuel refining.

The capacity of NASA is being increased from 3,000 to 4,000 tons, expected to complete mid-2026. The capacity of SpaceX is being increased from 10,000 to 15,000 tons, expected to complete mid-2025.

A research project by Isabella Lafaille, with 12 labs, is investigating the principles of pressurised water reactors. This project is expected to be complete at approximately summer this year.

During the month, a total of 1 billion and 969 million Credits were collected via taxation from the Confederation's population. Of these, 200 million Credits were spent on construction, 199 million Credits on research, 47 million Credits on expanding NASA and SpaceX, and 19 million Credits on the maintenance of the Confederate Army. With incomes far exceeding expenses, the United Confederation's financial health looks very good.

During the month of January 2025, the Pact of Collective Security split their industrial effort, with 80.6% going towards industrial modernisation, 15.4% towards building a commercial shipyard, and 4% towards building life support for the future colonisation efforts. 6 construction factories and one mine was constructed, and 396,000 litres of fuel were refined, which is far higher than their current needs.

Their reserves of all eleven Trans-Newtonian elements increased, with production being higher than consumption. The element with the lowest surplus was sorium, the stockpile of which increased by one ton in the past month, having been used primarily in fuel refining.

The capacity of both ESA and Roscosmos is being increased from 1,000 to 2,000 tons, expected to complete late 2025.

A research project by Mikael Saari, with 7 labs, is investigating the principles of pressurised water reactors. Scientist Borya Zaytsev with 6 labs is leading a project to design geological surveying equipment that can fit on a spaceship. Helge Stepanov with 5 labs is attempting to find a way to put human being into suspended motion, which will enable the design of cryogenic transports for colonisation purposes. All three projects are estimated to finish at some time this fall.

During the month, a total of 2 billion and 19 million Credits were collected via taxation from the Confederation's population. Of these, 299 million Credits were spent on research, 201 million Credits on construction, 40 million Credits on expanding ESA and Roscosmos, and 19 million Credits on the maintenance of the International Corps. With incomes far exceeding expenses, the financial health of the Pact of Collective Security looks very good.

During the month of January 2025, the Asian Defence Coalition split their industrial effort, with 50% going towards industrial modernisation, 30% towards extending their scientific institutions, and 20% towards building a commercial shipyard. 4 construction factories and two mines was constructed, and 595,000 litres of fuel were refined, which is far higher than their current needs.

Their reserves of all eleven Trans-Newtonian elements increased, with production being higher than consumption. The element with the lowest surplus was sorium, the stockpile of which increased by sixteen tons in the past month, having been used primarily in fuel refining.

The capacity of CNSA is being increased from 1,500 to 2,000 tons, expected to complete fall 2025.

A research project by Chen Gangjian, with 8 labs, is investigating the principles of pressurised water reactors, which is expected to finish in fall 2025. An investigation into geological surveying equipment that can fit on a spaceship, led by Chen Liaozhen with four labs, is expected to be completed early next year.

During the month, a total of 2 billion and 974 million Credits were collected via taxation from the Confederation's population. Of these, 300 million Credits were spent on construction, 199 million Credits on research, 22 million Credits on expanding CNSA, and 28 million Credits on the maintenance of the Coalition Ground Forces. With incomes far exceeding expenses, the financial health of the Pact of Collective Security looks very good.

Shanghai,
China, PanPac Territory

With the AtCon probes being shot throughout space, the PanPac government had given its monthly report showing that the industry conversion wasn't enough to try and keep up the advantage. The Supreme Chairperson was looking at the economic situation and saw that more could be used and wanted to changed that. The Mongolian wanted to keep the industrial strength against the socialists and the west as they had the deposits to do major conversion.

It took a few days before he was able to arrange an emergency meeting with the other ministers of the government in order to see what they can do to change the current economic policy for one of major industrial modernization.

To the Cabinet,

After reviewing the projections and the going over the industrial distribution I have come to disclosure of enacting an emergency meeting. The main detail is to try and shift focus to industrial modernization so that we can keep the industrial lead against the other two.

I await you,

Supreme Chairperson Timur-Altar Khan

Chen Liaozhen, Minister of Research, PanPac
Classified Location (Most probably in Hong Kong)

Definitely not going to say where he is right now, but he could tell that he is in China, and not necessarily on the unstable parts of the country itself. AtCon already launched several of their probes, and it definitely didn't do well with his efforts on leading the same thing for PanPac. Sizes are matter, but when that sizes unable to be used properly because the lacking in technology, there is something wrong. Hopefully the researches that he had in orders will going to help him in the long-run. He could release statements, but he feared that it will disrupted any similar attempts by their PR people and he knows better than that to not destroying their efforts. Then again, what efforts, right? In the meantime, he reviewed the plans, both current and future.

CNSA has been expanded, but it won't be completed until fall 2025. 500 more tons is good. Not great, but enough. 12 labs, four for geological surveying equipment being investigated and eight for pressurized water reactors. 30% towards scientific institutions as part of the industrial efforts. Well, fine so far. Nothing's out of control. Perhaps it could be given that the Minister of Development and Dear Leader themselves are quite good on managing the non-scientific parts. The letter just came in, just as he was about to post his reviews on the current and future projects.

Great, Dear Leader wants an emergency meeting. He sent a quick confirmation of him coming to the emergency meeting, and thus with his staffs, made his way to the emergency meeting.

Vladimir tapped his fingers subconsciously on the heavy fir wood table that graced his office, his mind racing as his eyes watched the probe launches for what must have been the sixth or seventh time. AtCon had beat the people of the world to the punch, that much could not be denied. Part of him, thus, was petty and did not approve of the launch; to see capitalist pig-dogs take the grandeur of space and plaster it with advertisements and a wealth based society went against the communalistic virtues his parents had instilled in him for years. But at the same time, as a man of science, the launches had made his heart sing in his chest. Mankind was returned once more to the holy void, to her future that had been abandoned for so long.

It was almost too much to take in, really, and the intelligence reports he had requisitioned from External Affairs were still largely unread as they lay in a heaping pile on his desk. One day he would have the time to slog through all of that data on the advances the Americans had made in the field of applied transneptunian elements, but today was not that day. Today, rather, he was looking over the production figures from Russia's own refurbished industries. As the Minister of Development it was not his job to worry about the progress of the technological horizon which it now seemed SocIntern was falling behind, but rather to ensure that when his fellow scientists did spit out something from their ivory towers the nation was prepared to make those designs reality.

The production figures were promising. With any luck they would be able to meet his projections for industrial growth, with new high energy alloys implemented in critical manufacturing plants bringing up the production of strategic goods by a full quarter by this time next year. For now, though, Vladimir was content with the progress that the Internationale had been able to make. Once RedStar was online, this race to the stars could begin in earnest. And the Rurikovich had no intention of finishing last.
Quite the unofficial fellow. Former P2TM Mentor specializing in faction and nation RPs, as well as RPGs. Always happy to help.

Isabella Lafaille
Côte d’Ivoire, Afrique

The helicopter blades cut through the dry African air, wind-blown dust and dirt generating a cloud as it landed in the open field. The pounding sound of the rotors echoed throughout the small rural town, and the reed roofs of the mud-huts that formed the majority of the standing structures waved lightly in the artificial breeze. Stepping out of the civilian vehicle, Tristan Brady squinted in an effort to keep the grit from getting into his eyes. A small crowd of the local residents had already begun to form on the village outskirts, and Tristan could feel the curious and suspicious expressions alike looking in his direction. Grimacing, he looked over the dilapidated state of the rural village – noting that there was nothing even in the way of proper roads or real infrastructure of any kind.

So this is the kind of place where she chooses to spend her time.

Looking over his shoulder, the American offered a smile to the other man stepping off the transport behind him. The older man was wearing the crisp olive-green uniform of the AtCon armed forces, his chevrons shinning proudly in the savannah sun.

“Colonel, it may be best if I do the talking!” Tristan shouted over the sound of the slowing rotors. He knew that the Colonel had only joined him because he had personally requested it. No doubt the man thought that the whole endeavour was a waste of his time, but Tristan could use every piece of help he could get and maybe having the uniformed officer by his side would lend some authority to his request. “She doesn’t always take too kindly to the uniform.”

He didn’t hear any response from the officer, although a grunt or a scoff could have been lost to the wind. The duo began to make their way towards the village outskirts and the gathering crowd. Tristan noticed a few family groupings, mothers and children emerging from their homes too look at the landed helicopter and the AtCon sigil emblazoned upon its side. He offered a friendly smile towards the children, waving in their direction with the practiced ease of a member of the political class.

Salut! Hello, I’m looking for Madame Lafaille – do you know where I might be able to find her?” A few of the local residents glanced at each other as they heard the horrific accent emerge from the American’s lips, exchanging a few words with each other. But before any of them could respond directly, Tristan saw a Caucasian woman push her way to the front of the crowd. She was dressed in a pair of old overalls, and her blond hair and face were tarnished with dirt and grime. Tristan’s eyes immediately lit up at the sight of her, seemingly oblivious to the fiery glare that she was shooting in his direction. Making his way towards the woman, Tristan offered an extended hand. “Jesus, Isabella it’s good to see you again. How long has it been?”

A loud smack echoed out in response to the question, Tristan face being snapped to the left as an open-palmed slap flew into his right cheek. The force of the blow actually caused him to stumble, and the Colonel’s eyes widened in surprise at the development as he met Tristan’s own gaze. The former SpaceX employee moved his jaw, realigning it amidst the stinging pain. He had been expecting something like that, but damn it still hurt like a bitch.

“Ok, so as much as I may have deserved that and I understand that you’re upset, let’s all keep calm heads -“

Salaud! Calm heads my ass, you stole my research!” Isabella was visibly fuming, jabbing an angry finger towards Tristan’s chest. “The sheer nerve of you to show up here after all this time is unbelievable.”

“Isabella, please. I know that we had our disagreements in the past but everything’s changing right now, ok?”

“Get to the fucking point and tell me what you want, Tristan.” Isabella crossed her arms over chest, offering her former colleague a look of disgust. Sighing, Tristan realised that this was going to go over about as badly as he had expected. Reaching into the inside of his jacket, he handed a tan file to the woman. For a moment, Isabella genuinely considered refusing even to look at the document, but relented. As much as she despised Tristan’s gut, he wouldn’t have flown all the way out to rural Africa for nothing.

The two men waited patiently as Isabella opened the file and scanned its contents, her eyes narrowing as she went down the page. It was a letter directed towards her, in essence a job offer with a number of technical documents on the recent Explorer missions. After a few minutes, she looked back towards Tristan – a hint of curiosity now evident in her expression.

“Is this for real?” She did her best to hide even a hint of excitement. But all engineers were prideful creatures, and Isabella was no different.
“It is. Your tech made those ships possible and you’re the best engineer that we had on the original team. We need you back, Isabella.”

The woman scoffed. “What, so that you can figure out how to put guns in space now?” Isabella shot a glance in the direction of the Colonel, her distaste at his presence clear. However, she let out a sigh – already knowing that she was going to take the offer and scolding herself because of it. Although that didn’t mean that she’d have to go too willingly. “I’m sort of in the middle of some important work, Tristan.”

“Compared to this?” He replied, incredulous. “Come one Isabella, I know that this stuff is your passion. How do you want to spend the rest of your life? 3D printing mudhuts or getting humanity to the stars?”

“Fine. But I want my own lab and team.”

Tristan smirked. “Isabella, you’re going to be the lead on this. You’re not getting a lab – you’re getting twelve.”

Commander Jonathan Reed
Johnson Space Centre
2025 January 01st 23:36

It had been seven years. Seven long years since Commander Jonathan Reed had first received his commission to join the most anticipated space mission since the Apollo moon landings. It had been a long journey- not just for him, but for the many others who had invested their time in the project, and now, he thought- considering the probes on the launch pad- it had almost paid off. The thought almost brought a tear to his eye. The light had long since gone from the sky, but the lights were still on in the accommodation facility for the soon-to-be astronauts. He could still hear the sounds of the few that were, like him, still awake. Yawning, he took a swig of beer, before turning and trudging back to the bed that was provided for him. It would soon be time for the launch and he wanted to feel well rested for it.

Earth Orbital Space,
2025 January 02nd 08:51

By the time of the launch, the crews of the three probes had been preparing for take off for hours beforehand and were only just finishing when the full weight of the world's press came to bear. You could see the spectators for the launch gathering out on the fields. But it wasn't long until they had all been shifted into their respective probes. The crew of over 50 people- the best of the many international candidates- under his command was nothing new to him (his career in the military had prepared him for that), but he found himself struck somewhat by eleventh hour nerves- what if something happened to the craft? But he stuck it out and kept up the stiff upper lip facade that had served him so well over the years.

When all was said and done, the launch was a bit short (and even a little anticlimactic), and when gravity finally released them it was even peaceful, though evidently some thought otherwise. Finally, though, the silence was broken and the crackling of a voice came from the console.

Commander Reed, this is Houston speaking. How are you feeling this fine day?

"Safe in the hands of the many employees of NASA and eager to make history, gentlemen. I think I can speak for all of my crew in hat we are all feeling pretty good today." The sound of his voice would reach the many millions, maybe even billions, of people watching the proceedings from the planet's surface. He was never any good at dramatic speeches, unfortunately.

The probe had left Earth's gravity well, but it would still be a few weeks until the ship and its crew would reach Mars, but Reed, for one, could wait.

GEV Explorer 001 (Commander Jonathan Reed)

At 01:50:06 UTC on the 29th of February 2025, Commander Jonathan Reed of GEV Explorer 001 became the first human to step on the surface of the red planet after almost two months of deep space travel, in an incredibly well-publicised landing and first EVA. Commander Jonathan Reed's mission objectives is to conduct a geological survey of the planet, which he will accomplish over the next few days.

Image

On 2025 March 06th at 03:40 UTC, after a week of geological surveys on Mars, the geology department of GEV Explorer 001 reported that they have found irrefutable evidence of advanced alien life in the form of partially intact alien structures underground Mars. The geology department concluded, from the size of the structure, that it likely was an alien colony. GEV Explorer 001 is not equipped to handle this situation, so all relevant information is passed down to NASA headquarters. Although the partially intact colony appears lifeless and deserted, NASA is not ruling out the possibility of hostile forces residing within the ruins. At 03:46 UTC, GEV Explorer 001 hurriedly evacuates Mars.

Despite the efforts of NASA to clamp down on the discovery, the news leaks out to the internet two days later, and both NASA and Commander Reed are pressured to make a statement to the world.

GEV Explorer 001 arrives at Phobos at 03:56, and at Deimos at 04:19. The crew of GEV Explorer 001 is badly shook by their discovery, but nonetheless performs their role as surveyors admirably. Over ten thousand tons of Trans-Newtonian elements at good accessibility are found on Deimos. The ship proceeds on to Harmonia, in the asteroid belt.

The survey of Harmonia is conducted late night UTC on the 2nd of April. Nothing of interest is found.

GEV Explorer 002 (Commander Chris Drake)

GEV Explorer 002 under the command of Commander Chris Drake landed on the comet Wolf-Harrington on 11:40 UTC on February 07th. A total of 187,793 tons of Trans-Newtonian elements were uncovered on this comet, at excellent accessibility. The chief geologist of GEV Explorer 002 believes that this comet may be a good site for a future mining outpost. The comet was very small, and the survey was completed in less than an hour by the GEV Explorer 002's expert and trained crew. Having completed the survey, GEV Explorer 002 left Wolf-Harrington on 11:58 UTC. Although the enthusiastic geology department wished to publish their findings on Earth's public data networks, they were quietly reminded by the security staff that the Explorer missions are funded by the United Confederation and as such their findings will only be reported to the United Confederation.

Image

GEV Explorer 002 surveyed the comet Comas Sola at early afternoon UTC, February 22nd, finding 16,360 tons of gallicite at 0.5 accessibility. Commander Chris Drake was out on the field for most of this survey and successfully learned some skills relevant to resource prospection. The geology department believes that this will allow all future surveys to proceed more efficiently, and was excited about the possibility of future mining outposts on these comets.

The navigation team, on the other hand, was incredibly pessimistic about both these findings, pointing out that it will be difficult to establish a permanent presence on comets, due to their eccentric and irregular orbits.

GEV Explorer 002 landed on the comet Tempel 1 at 08:46 UTC, February 24th. The day afterwards, on February 25th, GEV Explorer 002 surveyed Encke. Both surveys took about an hour to complete, and a small quantity of minerals at reasonable accessibility were found at both sites.

Image

At 19:51:00 of 2025 March 14th, Commander Chris Drake became the first man to set foot on Mercury. Although not as well publicised as Commander Reed's Mars landing, the event nonetheless gathers considerable public interest. The crew of GEV Explorer 002 are conducted a geological survey of the planet.

The geological survey of Mercury takes a few days, and the results are reported to Commander Chris Drake on the 19th of March. Almost four million tons of Trans-Newtonian elements are found on Mercury, at good accessibility. The geology department is enthusiastic.

Other AtCon

GEV Explorer 003 landed on 3 asteroids in February, one in March, and one in early April. No significant reserves of Trans-Newtonian elements were found at any of the sites, and the crew expressed great disappointment at their fruitless surveys.

As the experience in leading the AtCon research project to develop pressurised water reactors has improved her ability to manage people and resources, lead scientist Isabella Lafaille has increased the number of labs that she can manage from 20 to 25. Her assistants and fellow researchers report that she is definitely getting better adjusted to life back in North America, and that she is a kind and fair leader.

NASA discreetly asks Joshua Riggs, commanding officer of the 82nd Airbourne Division, whether he would be interested in leading a xenology team when NASA returns to Mars to investigate what was found. Naturally nobody knows anything about aliens, and C.O. Riggs, with his multiple decades of combat experience across various corners of the developed and developing world, is considered an "expert" in dealing with unfamiliar cultures.

Under orders from the Supreme Chairperson and the Ministry of Development, the construction of new research facilities is suspended on the 9th of February, 2025. The industrial capacity thus freed was allocated into industrial modernisation.

United Nations

Jen Kasse has always been a pacifist, strongly opposed to militancy in general and the development and stockpile of weapons of mass destruction in particular. Now, as the Secretary General of the United Nations, he is moving to achieve his vision of a nuclear-free world.

Using his influence as Secretary General to the fullest, Jen Kasse has succeeded in organising an international conference to discuss a global reduction in nuclear armaments. The date of the conference has been set as the 15th to 20th of September 2025, and all three superpowers - along with representatives of the non-nuclear developing countries - has been invited to attend the conference, which will be held at Geneva, Switzerland. Although there has been some concerns about hosting such an important conference within the Pact of Collective Security, the Secretary General's office believes that Switzerland's history as host to a number of important international conferences makes it well suited to host the nuclear reduction talks.

Premier Allaryce Kaiser and Supreme Chairperson Timur-Alta Khan will both have to decide whether their superpower will accept this invitation and, if so, what their negotiating stance should be.

The Minister was so damn tired. As the jet winged its way westward over good Internationale lands, Vladimir dozed in his seat even as his aide read him a briefing on the ongoing debates in the UN. Normally an iron-hard man accustomed to long hours and little rest, Minister Rurikovich was still human, and that human element had been sorely taxed in the last month.

Oh, it wasn't strictly anyone's fault. It was a host of factors; the Premier was taking a vacation at her dacha while the Duma debating finer points of collective policy, Foreign Minister Yurilov had been caught up in an armed conflict around the SocIntern Embassy in Gabon, his comrade, Professor Saari, was in isolation after suspected exposure to a biological agent... but the host of factors had meant Vladimir had been stretched to his limit and beyond, putting out the various fires that had been sparked by AtCon's rocket launch, in both political and economic circles.

"Minister?"

Natalya's voice awoke the aging scientist, and he passed a hand wearily before eyes bleary from lack of sleep.

"I am very sorry Natalya. I must have dozed off. Please, continue: we were talking about the ongoing crisis in India?"

The blonde-haired aide's head bobbed in acknowledgement.

"Yes, Premier Surivaya is facing opposition to his proposal that the People's Republic join with the Internationale from the Congress Party- those old Gandhist capitalists are strongly suspected to be receiving funds from American oligarchs that they are using to suppress the voice of the people, according to the KGB's sources on the topic. Minister Yurilov was booked to meet with the Premier yesterday, but the Alcar problem is proving more intractable than anticipated."

Leave it to the Foreign Minister to get caught up in a civil conflict right when the biggest foreign relations coup of the decade was beginning to unravel.

"Draft a missive to the Premier promising more financial aid- I'll talk to Kaiser once she gets back from vacation to backdate it, but for now just get Undersecretary Illanovich to countersign the offer. India is a hair's breadth away from signing the Mumbai Accord, and I will have Yurilov's guts for garters if their legislative bodies let it die in committee due to his lethargy on the issue."

It was true, though Natalya's eyebrows rose at the choice of phrase. India, as essentially the only great power of the modern age unaligned to one of the three primary blocs, represented a political coup the like of which had not been seen for years in the Internationale. She had always had good socialist leanings since her inception, but close ties with China's sham dialectic and a fondness for AtCon aid dollars had meant she was unwilling, historically, to take the next step and formally bind herself to the Internationale.

Though he wasn't feeling charitable today, Vladimir begrudgingly assigned credit where credit was due in his mind. Though Yurilov now risked the whole deal falling apart due to an ill-advised visit to a conflict zone, the Foreign Minister had been the one whose careful cultivation of pro-Internationale sentiment over the last decade had brought India this close to joining in common cause with the workers of the world. Personally, the Siberian almost salivated at getting his hands on the industry of the Indian subcontinent and her population; with so many willing hands and a new leap in industrial infrastructure, the modernization of SocIntern could continue apace, and she would not be found lacking when compared to the industrial powerhouse of East Asia.

"I will see it done, Minister. Then there is the matter of the research labs and the, special assignment for Brierrs. Did you still wish to formally authorize the deployment of Element Echo? General Karemenov is waiting for the green light in Berlin."

The dour Russian waved a hand, nodding with a smile that bespoke tired glee.

"Yes, tell Karemenov to go ahead. I consulted with the Premier yesterday, and she has approved the deployment and the budget we discussed. AtCon may have the advantage for now, but in the long run we need to secure our own technological datalinks against the processing power transneptunian logic engines promise. A few survey results would be valuable, design specifications more so. Give him that green light."

Natalya nodded, and passed the bespectacled Minister a document to sign, which he did in his customarily terse manner. Espionage between the superpowers had dropped off in the last few decades, mainly due to a lack of significant technological advances worth 'disseminating', but that paradigm had shifted now with the development of new TN-based ideas. Men and women from the White Academy in Leningrad were more than a match for their western or eastern counterparts, and the Inner Council intended to make use of that superiority ruthlessly.

That was all. As his aide took the documents away to transmit via a new Urudium-entangled transmitter, the Minister sank back into his chair once more. Once those eggheads at R+D finished retooling to get to work on a rocket engine, and the gravitic sensors were online, then he would have a lot of work to do. Even more than he did now, truth be told. But for now, as the jet continued its flight to Switzerland, Minister Rurikovich snatched as much sleep as he could from the jaws of a very busy life.
Quite the unofficial fellow. Former P2TM Mentor specializing in faction and nation RPs, as well as RPGs. Always happy to help.

Shangai, China.
PanPac territory.

Guards marched back and fourth surronding the complex of where an emergency meeting had been, some guards were also stationry or hid in bushes in case a spy was to be around here. Some of these troops were under the command Angelo Lopez who overlooked each one and had a walkie talkie that had a response to one unit every ten seconds to see if they had an update or saw a suspicious figure.

"Everyone keep your eyes peeled for doctor Chen Liaozhen, each member coming through the gates are important but if we want PanPac to succeed we want him without a bruise." Replies from unit to unit came from his shoulder as even Angelo himself walked back and fourth awaiting the scientists arrival.

Panpac,
Shanghai, Panpac Headquarters

The Glorious Leader had been late to his own emergency meeting, but he had his own problems as well. With the news of new discoveries from the Confederates and political movements being made in India by the Socialists. Many things were moving underneath the power of the Security Pact and such things will not be tolerated.

He walked in the Headquarters, keeping his composure that was unlike his upbringing as a Mongolian tribal. He took an elevator up to the main building and saw that his head of research was there but not the minister of development, which is sad. However, the meeting must go on as time was of the essence.

" Minister Chen, it is good for you to come to the meeting at short notice. I'm sad to see that the other Minister wasn't here but we don't have time to wait any longer. Sadly to say that this is my fault for being so late. Nevertheless, I came to talk to you, and if or when the other Minister does arrive, of three important things that are of dire situation for our organization to thrive."

Khan brings out a datapad and the table lights up with a holographic display of information," the first one is that I wish to change our industrial distribution to one that sacrifices the expansion of research labs in favor of industrial modernization and to set up a commercial shipyard within 2-3 years. It is distributed with a 80/20 modernization plan that will cut the process down in more than a few years. Once the shipyard is done than we will focus on lab expansion."

The display changes to one of the latest news about the Confederation," it appears that the confederation has made great gains of information that is delicate and things that are bad as one that have led me to ask for your aid on this. This Organization cannot stand by and let such information go solely to the West and we must find ways to retrieve that information, steal their rocketry technology, or cause a crash to their core systems to slow them down till we have everything for our first ships."

The display changes yet again, but this to Indian Subcontinent," the third and final piece is perhaps the most grievous of them all. Rumors have been going around of the socialists trying to influence India and get them in their power. This cannot happen, we must do anything to not let the Indians to fall into the Russian bloc but I have been wondering should we put our finances towards influencing the Indians into swaying towards our direction and healing the wounds that the Chinese Communist Party had done in the past for they still carry much weight in this alliance of ours yet I won't let them dictate policy."

Mars
2025 February 29th 01:50

"I hereby declare Mars a colony of the British Empire," announced Commander Reed saluting back towards Earth, to the long dead Queen Victoria. "Long live the Queen!"

He was fully aware, of course, that he was being watched by millions, maybe even billions of people on a livestream that was being directly beamed back to Earth and processed in real time by NASA and its affiliates. He was also fully aware, of course, of how much everybody hated him right now.

Noticing his fellow crew members glaring at him, one of them, Julia Rudd, made a noise that approximated her disgust with him. He shrugged, before continuing. "Yes, yes- that was a joke, everyone- the Brits aren't coming for your homes. One step for man, one giant leap for mankind, etcetera, etcetera. In the name of humanity and the Atlantic Confederation, I announce Mars open for business."

He firmly planted the flag of the Confederation into the Martian soil, imagining the applause from the people of Earth, vaguely imagining that he could hear it. A quick communication stopped him in his revelry.

"Hey, Commander, don't we have a job to do?" It was the ship's doctor, Javier Vicario, with his strong Hispanic accent.

He was right of course, but couldn't he just enjoy the moment, he thought, irritably. "If we must, Javier."

GEV Explorer 001, Mars
2025 March 06th 03:20

Despite the fact that they had been completing a scientific survey for the past week, even the non-scientific personnel had maintained a sense of excitement over the period. In the end, the time spent on voyage may have been to their benefit, even if it was slightly boring. Most of the crew got on well- despite the occasional conflict of personality, especially between the security officers and the scientists, but that was to be expected from the wide variety of personalities, professions and places they all came from- and they worked together efficiently (probably why they were all chosen to go on the mission. Even Reed himself, as he noted, was still enjoying himself immensely. Completing reports, though, was still a tedious task no matter what planet you are on. Though his back remained ram-rod straight from the iron discipline from the many years spent in private school and military academies, mentally he was beginning to slump- discipline only got you so far in office work.

A knock at the door knocked Jonathan out of his stupor. It was Dr. Frank Hector, one of the geologists- a New Zealander with a nervous disposition. He was fidgeting slightly, seemingly even more anxious than normal.

"Hey... uh... Commander? There's something you might want to see."

"What is it, Frank?" he replied, slightly excited for something to else to do.

"I can't really explain it, it's just something you've got to see for yourself..."

Alien Ruins, Mars
2025 March 06th 03:40

"Well that was unexpected," pronounced Reed, in a perfectly deadpan voice.

One of his subcommanders, George Burnett looked at him quizzically. "That's an understatement Reed," his strong Scottish accent echoing through his helmet.

They were standing down in a form of cave formation, looking upon a large complex of ruins, unquestionably alien in origin. There were five of them there: the commander himself; Burnett; another one of his subcommanders- Julia Rudd, who had come on the original EVA with him; and two of the scientists, Frank- the geologist who had taken him there- and Dr. Sofía Bernal- one of the chemists.

"I've just got off the phone with NASA, they're ordering an evacuation," Julia announced, with a distinct Australian twang."

George scowled with this, with the other two following with similar reactions. Reed only sighed, remaining silent as the squabbling began. After around 20 seconds of this he finally decided to step in.

"Well then, if we have to leave, we have to leave," he cut off any dissent with a raise of his hand, before continuing. "Julia, John- confirm everyone's in the Explorer. We're getting off this planet", he ordered, with a nagging sense of regret tugging at the edge of his mind.

Evacuation Procedures, GEV Explorer 001
2025 March 06th 03:46

The sudden rush of the crew had been of little surprise to Jonathan. Word of the alien structure had made its way around the ship with astonishing speed, even when considering its size, but the evacuation order had been met with surprise, even anger, from Reed's subordinates. Though he had explained that, despite his better judgement, NASA found that they weren't equipped with necessary facilities to handle analyse the ruins, and didn't even know if it was completely uninhabited and what would happen then? The exchange didn't go well, but went a long way to placate some of the dissenting voices amongst the team.

It hadn't taken long, though, for the crew to prepare themselves for take-off. The pilots (Jessica Anderson and Timothy Black) had set themselves up with a few minutes of being informed, with the rest of the crew following soon after. Most of the equipment had been extricated from their tasks and put into storage, leaving most of the traces that they had ever been there in the singular, lone flag of the Atlantic Confederation, a lonely splash of blue against the dark rust of Mars. The launch was quick and without complication, but Reed looked down on the planet with regret of the short time he had been there. But no matter, there was always more to explore out in the dark void of space.

Public Statement of Commander Jonathan Reed

Recently, I have been informed of rumours floating around the media over the past few days. To address these concerns, I have been asked by NASA to record a statement. Yes, evidence has been discovered to conclusively prove that extraterrestrial life exists. The age-old question of whether humanity alone has been answered. And that answer is no.

New Delhi, India
2025 April 05th

Image

The world applauds Moskva tonight as the Pact of Collective Security signs a landmark aid package to India. The Pact of Collective Security agreed to provide two billion credits every year in direct subsidies and necessary supplies.

"We thank the SocIntern people for their generosity," noted the Prime Minister of India in a joint press conference following the ceremonies, "and we will ensure that this aid is put to good use in lifting our people out of poverty."

A diplomatic contingent was left in New Delhi to continue the negotiations of a free trade agreement between India and the Pact of Collective Security. Although Indian officials insist that "nothing has been confirmed" and that "negotiations are still underway," anonymous officials on both sides agree that the generous aid provided by the Pact of Collective Security has made Indian officials greatly agreeable to economic collaboration, and expect negotiations to last no more than a few months.

Stockholm, Pact of Collective Security,
2025 April 16th

Following SocIntern directives to build a survey ship immediately or in any case as soon as possible, the SocIntern Ministry of Research has strongly revised its priorities.

Image

The project to construct the principles of deep sleep and cryogenic transports has been suspended for the time being, with the resources being reallocated to more rapidly figuring out geological survey sensors.

With a call moving out across SocIntern for a design of a conventional rocket engine, several companies have offered their provisional designs. The SocIntern Ministry of Research has decided to accept the offer made by the Scandinavian company Bergqvist-Nilsson A/B, and Minister of Research Mikael Saari's team has been reassigned to co-operating with the company on researching this design.

Moskva, Pact of Collective Security,
2025 June 6th

The design for the engine is finalised on the 1st of June, and the geological survey sensor is researched on the 6th. The shipbuilding facilities of Roscosmos are retooled for the purposes of launching an early survey vessel, and Roscosmos expects that the first ship of the new Kirov-class survey ships will launch on January 2026.

At exactly 1,000 tons, it is within the capacity of both Roscosmos and ESA to build, and will be slightly slower than the AtCon Explorer-class vessels.

United Nations Headquarters,
2025 June 19th

Ms. Isabella Lafaille,

I am pleased to address you, one friend of peace to another.

As you are well aware, the United Nations is hosting an international conference for global nuclear disarmament from the 15th of September of this year. I would personally appreciate greatly if there were reminders that the nations and the people do not stand alone in this great venture for all humanity. You are not only a well-known scientist, but you are also famous for the good work that you have done for the least fortunate of this world, and for your fierce stance of anti-militarism.

Hence, I would like to invite you to Geneva, Switzerland on the 15th of September be present as a guest speaker during the reception for the conference. Please let me know as early as possible if it is possible for you to attend.

Regards,

Jen Kasse,
Secretary-General of the United Nations

The SocIntern cultural exchange crew arrived in London today morning, where they will stay for the next few months. But a simple performance team they certainly was not. Let by Captain 3rd Rank Nikolai Voskresensky, they were also under orders to keep a close eye on the United Kingdom's social and technical happenings.

"Charles, more tea?"

Charles puts his feet up on the chair in front him. They called this place Little Bohemia - a throwback to Bohemianism, the French arts subculture that derived from the lower-class, Romani society the medieval French believed to originate from Bohemia. Little Bohemia was the bar that serviced some of the leaders of the IdF MLB Complex, both its permanent command like Charles and its day-to-day, elected shift officers. It had used to be a place of jolliness, where the officers and the enlisted could celebrate together and unwind after their long shifts. There was not much of interest served in Little Bohemia, mostly tea and coffee, and for those ending their work for the week, some table wines (wine was common people's drink, for this is still France). However, an atmosphere of tenseness had settled about the launch base since the Incidents, earlier in the year.

Many of the enlisted had come off the initial, heady heights, of being at the frontlines of a quantum leap in the Enemy's capacity to destroy humanity. A rare few had the correct balance of idealism and pragmatism to offer a cautious good word for humanity's collective leap back into space; but for most of them, this was a setback for socialism. Both as an ideology, and as a polity.

Charles had been furious; he was, at best, ambivalent towards SpaceX, and at worst, outright hostile. It was said - in more rumour-centric circles - that he had, in his early days as a defector, been introduced to a former manager of SpaceX who had been summarily dismissed and consequentially defected to SocIntern under masses of gambling debt. Charles, as the story went, beat the man bloody before he was restrained. Charles, of course, had never commented on the rumour - although he'd gladly promised that if the start were true, the end would be too. To Charles, this was the first step in privatizing the common territories of the universe; the natural succession of the imperialism that had subjugated his beloved Scotland and the comrades he had grown to know in Africa.

Charles accepted the tea begrudgingly.

"Do you remember 1986?"

The assorted officers and enlisted drinking in silence stopped, offering an impromptu toast to that most eternal of the socialist endeavours. Of course, none of them remembered 1986 - it was 39 years ago, and the oldest commanders in the base were all Frenchmen. Not 1986 in the sense Charles meant it, thinking, as he was, about the space station Mir - translating to either peace, or world. The first long-term human habitat in space.

It was not Mir the world remembered; but Neil Armstrong, the first steps on the Moon. It was so typical of the Western system, to memorialize momentary leaps to which one could give a name. It was not the nature of the West to be sustainable, to be the product of many. Johnathan Reed, no doubt, would be remembered amongst all. Elon Musk, rewarded.

Charles wondered if anyone could remember who in SpaceX was the first to see the Incident becoming more real than idea. If it mattered, to them.

"Of course I do."

The collected turned, the obnoxious light from the exit sign illuminating a stranger in a suit. The green light gave his eyes a sickly shade, and they cast his lips in shadow. With the fluorescent lights of Little Bohemia ahead of him, his deep wrinkles were thrown into deep relief.

His name was Grigori. He carried a briefcase.

"Good evening Charles, I've some things we need to discuss."

Grigori was a fixer, of sorts. Grigori was the man who had negotiated Charles' defection. A Muscovite by nature, he nevertheless spent most of his time travelling the Socialist Internationale, making the contacts necessary to support his charges (his 'friends'; a term he had begun to use euphemistically in his early days as a discrete operator, and had learned to use literally in his recent days as a man tying up loose ends in the eyes of God) - some defectors, others politicians, more still simply travellers, artists, and scholars. Much of his payment was in-kind - he offered favours now, for favours with interest accrued and a return on the principal later. A big favour for a new defector became two big favours from a missile base commander later; one for Grigori's personal use, one for a new charge, and so it went on.

"Oh? Someone you want to have work with me?"

"Not quite. I have a job I'd like you to apply for."

Charles' eyebrow lifted.

"You have one of my friends working under you - he was your night shift for the launches. He invited me here, set me up with clearance, and informed me that he felt you wanted a change of pace given recent events. And, of course, I have a friend at Bergqvist-Nilsson A/B. I believe that the process will be an open-tender, and given the nature of the project, I cannot hope to expedite your application; but, I have some early insight as to what opportunities may be available. In terms of applying for a command position with the ESA. Perhaps you could see about securing your old comrade Nikolai Voskresensky as a reference; his current work is well in your line of expertise, and he may be able to speak towards your character.

This is something you would do on your own merits, of course. I cannot offer you help - although, of course, I can certainly offer you a favour."
If I can't play bass, I don't want to be part of your revolution.

PanPac
Shanghai, PanPac HQ

Chen Liaozhen went hurriedly into the HQ, running beside the main guard unit. Angelo Lopez seems to be a very weird name for Chinese, or for even a commander of security in PanPac. After all, it's not really like the PanPac are running out of competent local officer to led the security, instead of foreigner to boot. But that's not his concern. Supreme Leader Khan presented him with the directions as he formed up his own. At the very least, he already reported the reports of researches to him.

"I guess I am agreed with everything so far, Premier Khan."
