The loss of HMNV Bastion and the recent inability of our armed forces to defend our nation from the orbital threat of the Atumites has put military modernisation on the forefront of the political agenda for the first time since the disastrous aftermath of Operation Swift.
In response to the growing debate outside and inside the national legislature the government has already moved to deal with the orbital threat by purchasing a battlestar from our new comrades in the Dornalian Republic, but now it appears that the government is also preparing itself to deal with more conventional threats, with the Defence Ministry reporting that the benefits of continued economic growth will be used to double with size of the military budget, with spending set to rise to 4% within the next few months.
Katia De Campo, the newly appointed Defence Minister has hinted that new equipment will be purchased for all branches of the military, the most notable being new fighters and anti-air defence platforms for the air force and new tanks and transport helicopters for the Territorial Defence Force. It’s unknown where these new weapons will be manufactured but its expected that Kouralian, Celritannian, Dornalian and Rohanian companies will be invited to compete alongside MalDef.
As MalDef is one of the smallest state-owned corporations it's not believed that the company will have the capability to actively compete with its foreign rivals on all defence contracts, but the government is still confident that the bulk of purchased equipment will either be completely constructed or assembled within Malgrave to ensure that the economic benefits of this military build-up are kept within the country.
It's also understood that the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Science and Engineering will be cooperating closely together on a future classified research project, with anonymous sources telling the RMT that the project will ensure that the country will never face the threat of orbital bombardment ever again.
