Bala Saturno didn't put her full heart in a points-based fight. The headgear felt to her like training wheels. It conditioned her to keep it basic, not rev her punches with full strength. If at full power her rhythm was a 3, the setup meant she was never going beyond 1. That doesn't mean she was boxing badly. Without committing to big swings, she left a lot less holes to be exploited. That way, she was able to comfortably win her first two fights, against Rick Leigh and Felix Fitzgerald. And then she lost against Kaldwell. Not just lost, but so badly it was like she was barely there at all. Kaldwell was using exactly the kind of boxing she herself was playing too safe to do, and beat her at the game she should have been playing. That was like a wakeup slap. She needed to start boxing like she usually does and punch for real if she wanted to start off the MBO at a good ranking.

Since the tournament started, she was watching the tapes of one Rutherford Muun. Considered by some the finest boxer Dainer has ever seen in the past, his style couldn't be more different than Saturno's. He wasn't even the same weight class, havin spent his days going between the flyweight and bantamweight divisions. Right-handed, he put his dominant hand forward for an exceedingly powerful and accurate jab, which was capable of dismantling most opponents on its own. But what she really liked was the explosive left that awaited anyone getting past his defense. She sought to emulate that technique, the way it sprung out sudden as a snakebite before the opponent could notice what happened, and with the help of her coach tried to add it to her already pretty hefty arsenal.

That punch ended up being the small difference that got her past Alexandros Leonardas. It wasn't perfected by any means, and she was a long way before she could use it consistently, but when the Romaian, more technical and focused, put her on the back foot early on, it was good enough to nail him and stop him in his tracks. It went down to the wire, but in the end Leonardas suffered enough damage from Saturno's haymakers that his offensive power fell behind and she dominated the late fight.

Linda Henshmen better beware, she' coming in for the kill.

Early reports on Linda Henshmen, near the start of her international career, would refer to her as hesitant. She was defensive, but almost to a fault. The stats she put up throughout her first 4 MBO fights would paint a picture of a different fighter. The reason for the change, and maybe her success, was the new weight class.

Opponents closer to 180 lbs. hit harder than those around 126 lbs. There may have also been a different mental effect at work. After fighting opponents weighing over 175 lbs, she found featherweight opponents less intimidating. She lost a good deal of muscle mass, with Crossing Sun's trainers planning a very specific, scientific diet and exercise regiment to help mold her into her new form.

Now she's more compact and lithe. Her flexibility and agility ratings have increased. In the higher weight classes, she developed a technical skill because her punches were just not as strong as certain opponents. That's where her focus on speed and focus really developed.

Now her punch hits with slightly more parity, although she has lost overall power compared to her heavier weight strength. She's far from a power puncher. In the recent match against Julia Sabo and many others, she still showed the will to go toe to toe and chase down opponents. She seemed to be refining a style, the culmination of which was reached at her latest fight.

She won her first two fights by 7 points. Her third fight was won with 6 points in her favor. She followed that Group performance by winning 17-4. She has enough reach to go up with many in her weight class, at a 'toned-but lanky' 5'11. The ability to read angles and fight the battle of the dance, as an experienced defensive fighter, also contributes to her success.

When she added this new aggressive side, it caught a few opponents by surprise. When someone used to ducking and weaving comes after you, it's harder to duck and weave away from them. That led to a few well-timed punches where an opponent seemed to duck right into Linda's red and purple striped gloves. Linda could anticipate reactions two or three steps in advance. If she moved to one direction when someone was trying to avoid her, she could shift, watch the reaction on a feint and would constantly look for patterns.

The next time that 'feint' came along, it might be a real punch. And when her opponent tried to move from it, Linda may have anticipated certain holes or flaws in the defense that could let a punch slip through. For example, certain people may drop their fist or open their arms on certain shifts. The strikes happened with such split second timing, that they looked like random hits. Fight fans could see her strategy at work.

Analaysts saw her has quicker and more technical than any boxer on Vangaziland's Olympiad team. Her next opponent would be a worthy opponent. Bala Saturno was already a slayer of the undefeated. Now she was ready to rear her head in order to confront Linda Henshmen.

Bala fought someone who put up the same sorts of stats Linda did. Bala still looked Leonardas right in the eye and beat him, punch by punch. It was arguably the hardest fought slug match of the tournament. Saturno picked up a ton of momentum. Henshmen was still on a roll as well.

A buzz was developing around this fight, especially after the other undefeated boxer fell to Bala's gloves. Any fight fan should be able to appreciate what this would fight signify.

Many wondered if Henshmen would stir up drama before the match. When asked on a pre-fight special to make a statement on Saturno, she seemed to compliment her. "She's such a nice, pretty girl. I can't wait to meet her."

Her light brown eyes narrowed, fair skin and freckles cinching around her nose under the frame of curly, light-brown hair.

Linda chuckled after she said the sentence, seemingly knowing Bala would erupt with anger at the simple statement. She refused to say anything more.

"Next subject, next subject", Linda said laughing. "Go back to the Bundison cleat brand." She lost her grip, laughter bubbling out alongside the canned laughter of the studio audience.

Kaldwell was set to face the tournament's 6th seed. He was another fighter finishing 2nd in their group, as Kaldwell did. Alex Dermer finished with a +4 points differential. Abigail finished with +7. They both seemed to score similar results. It looked like the two had been on a head on path to meet in the Semifinals.

Abby had a slight edge in the results. At the same time, the minor difference could easily be the result of different groups. Both fighters would have to square up in the ring, in front of the world stage to settle the score. Many Werxish analysts expected a close slugfest, similar to the Saturno-Leonardas fight. Both fighters would look to turn the tide and rack up points. Each would also try their hardest to stop the other.

Either fighter had the chance to take a big lead though. It would come down to endurance. It was latter in the stages of the season. They both had several tough fights behind them. Their bodies were likely sore in several places. Green & Gold Cannon Boxing was doing their best to condition their fighter. Abigail was getting constant sports medical treatment to help her recover. She'd have ice baths after fights to help her recover.

On the night before each fight, she'd go to a spa and have time in the sauna and a hot stone massage. Impurities would be purged through the sweating, cleaning her system. It would also warmed and loosened her muscles. The stones targeted her spine when placed along her backbone. The heat radiated directly into the network of nerves that ran along her back.

This ritual helped her recover well up to this point. It gave an extra bounce to her step, with Abby ready to go the full length of the fight. She still had a few sore spots that plagued her. It was just one more thing she had to fight.

The time for her next fight was fast approaching. She hoped she'd find herself in the first title fight of the MBO. A tiny island and an Empire around it watched and waited.

Abby went on an evening sports talk show leading up to the last fight of the MBO season. It had been hyped up in large part to her constant trash talking. Even when an entire group stage and two playoff matches stood between them, Abby Kaldwell began picking at Linda Henshmen. The chance the two had of meeting on this stage was slim.

Wrexish host Benny Banks invited Kaldwell to his set to find out if she was going to back down before the fight. "So now that you're here, what do you think? You see what she's done."

"Benny, that's the problem. I'm not worried about what she's done. Look at what I've done. Like... Okay, we both fought Bala Saturno. Linda beat her 11-5, but I got her 10-3. I think Linda lucked out on a few of those points. I would have scored that fight much closer to Saturno. I bet without the headgear, she'd have taken Linda down."

"That's a minor difference in numbers mixed with your opinion though. It looks like Linda can find a way to adapt to whatever strategy people throw at her. You know what I mean? Bala came at Linda more aggressively than she came at you. She hit Linda more than she hit you. But Linda kept her at bay and outscored you against her."

"No, that's fake", Abby said, narrowing her eyebrows. She flexed her shoulders before continuing. "You're exaggerating. Bala was 2-0 and leading the group when I fought her. I was 1-1. She had momentum. If I didn't surprise her on Fight 3, she would have went 3-0. Many other groups, she'd have been undefeated."

"So what would you tell Linda? What do you want her to hear before the two of you step into the ring?"

"Linda, you're just another arrogant Vangazi. I'm going to show you what a real fighter is. You dodged this fight, we wanted to make it happen. You ignored us hoping this wouldn't happen. Now the entire MBO is watching. And chickie... You are going down..."

The fight was expected to draw a massive viewing audience throughout the Vannish Empire. This would reach Africa in New Gazi, Asia in the Tainese Isles, the territory of Esportivan Vangaziland, the tiny Svennish Isles and the Northern Mainlands themselves, Vangaziland & Wrexwic. The Vannish Sports network carried by allies was also showing the fight.

This all brought huge financial contracts to the MBO and the fighters. Up to this point, only a few Vannish channels showed the fights to domestic audiences. This match would reach a much larger audience, out to the most remote part of Vangaziland's sphere of influence. A farmer in New Gazi or fishermen in the Tainese Isles might only know the Vangazi as the people who pay for their schools. Now they could watch a colonial fight an old-blooded Vann.

Many wanted to see the Wrex beat the Empire. Others were loyalists who held Linda on a pedestal. Either way, time's hourglass of sand was sifting closer to the start of the MBO's first title fight.

Linda was all laughs, also guesting on a late night show. With Wrexwic's time difference to the East, Kaldwell's clip on the Benny Banks Show was available. The show played clips, including Abby's rant on 'real fighters' and 'dodging fights'.

Linda was all laughs. At points in the clip, she had to cover her mouth because she was laughing too hard. Her neck tensed up and her entire body shook in comedy from the look of anger in Kaldwell's eyes. The truth was that Linda had no idea why Abigail was so mad at her. Linda wouldn't have even known Abby existed. But she kept coming after her.

"Abby makes me laugh", Linda said. "She talks so much, but she just talked herself into a hole. You heard it here first. I'm setting out to pummel her. She keeps running her gums. Okay. So now we can square up and see what's really going on."

The experiment of allowing women to compete with men resulted in a few hungry women taking the spotlight. Like almost all Vangazi, Linda Henshmen completed 18 months of conscript service with the Vannish Army. Her time included intensive hand-to-hand combat. The program focuses on a blend of Judo and Jiu-Jitsu unofficially called Van-Judo-Jitsu.

Striking is taught through hobbies and sports while training focuses on other areas. Conscripts could get credits for taking up fight sports. This is where Linda really started training hard, receiving incentives for all her time spent in fight gyms.

Kaldwell had an even tougher time in the Wrexish militia. Just policing the locals in Wrexwic was a combat situation, especially during the past decade of turmoil. Fist fights were the least of her worries.

It was no surprise the two made it this far.

"Kaldwell, I'm calling you out", Linda said as she pointed into the camera. "Tell your trainer to get that ice bath ready, because I'm about to warm you up."

Minutes after her words were broadcast live, Kaldwell posted publicly on Henshmen's social media page. "Bring it, &!@#*.

The two would wake up the next day. Fight day.

They both had similar days, starting with the lightest of workouts just to warm up their muscles. It was more of a glorified stretching, a pre-conditioning to ensure their bodies felt 100% later in the day. They both had light meals and plenty of hydration. Kaldwell only drank water. Henshmen drank an electrolyte rich, sugarless concoction. They both had promotional shoots.

Other than that, they both had time to think. There was a lot of waiting and preparation. It was like a regular fight day with a few extra, official things added on. The day was busy, with lots of forced downtime.

Kaldwell cut the wait messing with apps on her phone. Linda brought a book with her. It was one of the fantasy genre series passing through Vangaziland. A lot of the story was about goblins and dwarves fist-fighting in bars. She searched the book for inspiration, hoping to tune her mind with the warrior spirit of the characters.

The two would come out draped in their country's flag with hip hop in the background. Both chose extra violent lyrics, really hoping to push the aggression.

The two were coming to fight. There would be no holding back. A close fight was expected. If any fighter won by a huge lead, it would represent one fighter totally dominating the other. There would be no technicalities or mistakes. Would Abby back up her words? Would Linda show exactly why she ignored the Wrex?

Tellef Nordeson was fighting in the hopes of salvaging his career. He was expected to perform well at the last Olympiad. He was eliminated from the early group stages by the future gold medal winner. This hit Nordeson fairly hard because several other Vannish boxers left with medals. Most of them were surprise underdogs who scrapped to a bronze. Tony Toca was one silver medalist.

Toca was passed up in place of Omall Gazi. Gazi has gone 0 for 2. Toca was represented almost exclusively by the National Team. Gazi fought in the Olympiad but is also a Crossing Suns fighter. Henshmen did well to get into the first title bout. But their fighter missed out on holding two titles. Winning two mixed gender belts would have been quite the accomplishment.

She still has enough youth left to get to the next Olympiad. It'll be Henshmen's first. She was a bit down for the rest of the weekend after the fight, not posting on social media. By the middle of the next week, she posted a few clips of her new training regimen.

She gave her Wrexish rival nothing but praise in her post-fight talk show tour. It wasn't personal, at least not for Linda.

"That wasn't an act on Kaldwell's part", Henshmen told a late night host. "She really had something against me. I think it's just funny. But she found her motivation and that gave her the edge... Kudos."

It did burn her, but if she let it brush off, the loss wouldn't have an effect... Besides... Why not let Wrexwic enjoy a title? They didn't have many other international sports going on there.

The Wrexish fighters were off to a solid start. Harvey Newhouse was 1-1, but led his group. He had the most PF and the least PA. Lou Wellard was 2-0, but second in his group.

With the next wave of fights coming up, the Vannish media is set to cover each fighter from both Imperial States. A few other select matches will also be covered.
