On 1st September 2017, Otfried Best, the NPD candidate for the mayor of Völkingen, was asked by one of the Die Partei members:
"Mr. Best … I find it alarming that in Völklingen many house numbers are displayed in Arabic numerals. How would you like to take action against this creeping foreigner infiltration?"

To the surprise of everybody involved, he answered seriously:
"You just wait until I am mayor. I will change that. Then there will be normal numbers."

Mr. Best has not commented on the situation yet. For the record, the Arabic numerals are the ones most commonly used in modern mathematical writing.

What do you think about it?

Personally, I am of the opinion that this makes Mr. Best pretty much unelectable. Even if he has any good policies, such gaps in common knowledge shouldn't be present in a government official.

I wouldn't expect anything else from the left but to judge the candidate on a single answer to a pretty nonsensical question, asked by a member of a literally satirical political party (Dei Partei). When one ask such dumb questions, one should expect to receive an answer of the same degree. So that's pretty much a non-event, and has little political value beside comedy. Show me that this proposal is in his official manifesto and then it may be a legitime thing to question his sanity.

See, what I mean? Sure, if I used them from birth, I would calculate with them as well as with normal numbers, but they still are quite impractical, because Latin numbers don't have a single symbol for zero, and if even they had, it simply wouldn't have been fitted in their writing system.

Latin number calculating may be not exactly precise in some places, because of format, but it still shows, what I mean.
