Brief history of your nation: After the fall of electronic devices, the Governor of California called a state of emergency in the state. Unfortunately, few learned of such an event, as the aforementioned fall resulted in a lack of communications equipment. The few places that did leanr of the SoE were usually within proximity to ARNG stations. Most notably was LA.

During the activation of ARNG units to keep the peace and provide a level of relief to the massive city, LAPD riot police and SWAT were used in widespread riots and collections of dissenters, it became apparent that treating such an event peacefully would not work. As such, food started being collected into equity rations, those who offered their food to the bank so that it could be divided equally would remain in their homes, waiting for rations to return, those that failed to do so were dragged into the street and shot.

Eventually, it got bad enough that gangs started approaching ARNG and LAPD units with the request of helping in the situation, already spread thin, they accepted such a request, and then things started getting marginally better from a certain perspective. With all the fleeing citizens from the now obvious police state, food started being stockpiled in greater amounts. And with the number of deaths, both from those refusing to cooperate and those who attempted to enter or leave the city, the ground started becoming ironically fertile.

This was all in the first six months.

It wasn't until the Big Stick almost ran aground that things became evidently bad across the entire nation. News appeared of the Governor's suicide, and subsequently General Grimsdottir took command of Californian ARNG units within comms range. Unfortunately it wasn't much, and with the population of LA still at a very strained point, they had to start planning long term.

Eight years later, a fair chunk of surrounding counties have been reclaimed and contacted, with the USS TR having been fully repaired and now undergoing degaussing procedures. A few smaller solar farms have cropped up on Santa Monica beach, but they very much lack the capability to power much more than bio-diesel refineries and radios. The population of the LA has since dropped from 18 million down to simply 1 million, many sick or malnourished. A majority of the city has been intentionally collapsed for steel and concrete needed to hopefully build a wall around the city of LA. Plans are in motion to starts reclaiming counties to the east and south, through hopeful diplomacy or likely war.

Brief history of your nation: When the power first went out there was panic everywhere, but there was a group that panicked the least in South Dakota. It was the Lakota Sioux, when the power went out, while others were panicking the Lakota decided to move out, contacting their other brethren through the old ways. After a time they reached their destination, Mount Rushmore. The nearby town of Keystone was alarmed by the influx of thousands, as the town had survived relatively intact due to its size. The Lakota swiftly made peace with the residents of Keystone and settled into their sacred lands. They set up was has come to be called the Confederation Reservation, and the settlement they developed around mount Rushmore has come to be called Rush City by most of the residents.

Over time word got out and others would flock to the area. After several conflicts with people trying to take land and animals belonging to ranches around Keystone, the Confederation knew that they had to establish control, so they did. They ruthlessly drove the offenders out and established a set of tenets, rules that would need to be followed.Despite the cruelty of their actions and the consequences of breaking the rules such things were needed in such times. Soon enough, many of their brethren from Rapid City, those that survived made there way to the newly established Reservation, and with them came thousands of others, who had fled or barely survived.

As more came, the Confederation spread their borders, in a sense. In order to accommodate the refugees and wanderers they spread their borders, to encompass more of the Black Hills, eventually taking the entirety of the Black hills National Forest under its domain. As they did so, the various Ghost towns and such in the area have become occupied, most notably is Deadwood. Before it was one of the most well known towns of the area due to its history, now it has become one of the major settlements of the Black Hills Confederation. A group of Non-Lakota formed out of Deadwood, taking influence from the towns Old West history and have taken to calling themselves the Deadwood Cowboys. They act as a sort of militia outside the borders of the Confederation Reservation, which is the most guarded and secured. They do not reside in just one place, but out of the many ghost towns and mines that litter the area.

Though there have been the same conflicts and problems as elsewhere, they were to a lesser degree, thanks to the swift actions of the Lakota and the abundant resources of the area they were able to establish themselves early and gain a position of power. The Ranches around Keystone, a town that is now part of Rush City and the Confederation Reserve, provides much meat and materials. The wildlife in the area is hunted as well, though only when needed and waste of the gift of nature is not tolerated. The Black Hills Confederation produces much of what the area was once known for, jewelry and other crafts, which they trade, but ammunition, is a much more valuable commodity than even meat in the world of today.

Brief history of your nation: The events immediately after the Flash are not well remembered. There was mass public confusion and disorder as the cities attempted to understand what was going on. Without an efficient means of communication it was days before the military and reserve could be activated. Soldiers quickly took to the streets to restore order but as the situation became more dire, order was more difficult to retain. Food became sparse, disease quickly began to spread as waste disposal and sanitation became an issue. Bodies began piling up in the streets, only to be burned. People began to leave the city in droves. Populations dispersed into the surrounding municipalities. Many would not survive the coming winter. Eventually order fell apart and remaining military elements left the city. Few remain in the city.

Not all was lost however as many of the smaller townships survived, banding together. Elements of the local reserve units the First, Second, and Fourth population divisions of Alberta and the Fourth and Eighth population divisions from Saskatchewan rallied together under a newly established provisional government that rose in the wake up the Flash. The Triangle as their territory was to be known as was great farming land, and with many now unemployed the farmers of the land had many new duties and subordinates. The old railway lines were given new life with steam based locomotives. Ranchers began breeding horses in place of cars and undertook an interesting new form of livestock. Grasshoppers were grown and slaughtered en mass for a fast and healthy food alternative. New landlines began being laid. Of course this is not without their struggles, the Union likes to dwell more upon their achievements than their struggles. Many would starve before a sustainable food source could be reintroduced. Many would die without proper medical attention.

As the old saying goes people flock to success. Word of a surviving bastion of humanity spread surprisingly fast for their world. Soon their southern neighbors would become members of their union. This union for the time being is a no non-sense autocratic regime.

Brief history of your nation: Without any word from the United States Government, or even from the Californian Governor, the people of San Francisco looked to leaders of their city for guidance. Community leaders saw themselves elevated to positions of great authority as things began to fall apart, leading to factionalism dividing up the city along districts, neighborhoods, or even blocks. Riots and violence were widespread. The Mayor, Gavin Newsom did his best to get ahold of the situation, calling on the SFPD, SWAT, Coast Guard, and any National Guard units in the vicinity to try and curb the violence and restore order.

While his efforts saw some success, his forces were spread thin. Newsom was forced to institute martial law, and call upon a number of community leaders to add their support to his cause. With the city largely under control, Newsom and San Francisco waited for the power to come back on, but it never did. By winter the city was starving, and Newsom’s leadership was proving ineffectual. A certain Franklin Kersey came to the forefront of San Francisco’s discontented populace. In a nearly bloodless coup, Kersey managed to depose Newsom.

Since then the city’s situation has improved somewhat, but famine and rising discontent continue to plague the city. A majority of the city’s population, particularly the metropolitan population beyond Kersey’s grasp, have fled, died, or devolved into squabbling gangs.

Brief history of your nation: You always read in the history books of how civilizations collapse, but most people dismiss it claiming "it can't happen here" especially in our oh so modern world. Well it did, and now those who have survived must deal with the consequences of this soap opera level of madness. The charade of order probably lasted a few weeks before the inevitable began to occur. When it became apparent this wasn't just some temporary crisis violence broke out wherever the news went. Looting, gang fights, settling of old feuds, and just regular blood lust occurred.

As people began starving or dying of thirst the bodies became too much to handle for whatever skeleton authority remained. No one is sure how, but someone got a strain of influenza that was abnormal, and soon it exploded across Seattle, and the west coast. Rumors are it spread further south into northern mexico, and potentially beyond. Of course no one has really confirmed such information as it would take too much time to do so. The yellow flu given its name by the dark yellow faces its victims were left with as they died for all intents, and purposes was wiped out in Washington due to a massive fire.

The fire spread across much western Washington, and into British Columbia, but when the fire died down much had changed. The city of Seattle had mostly been burned out or burned to the ground. The remaining authorities sent word to each other, and decided to form a council to centralize operations just enough. In a symbolic move they penned a letter of secession, and viewed that the government had most likely collapsed while the leaders hid in their bunkers. Issues within the Puget sound region have to be dealt with before the council can even dare deal with the rest of western Washington.

It is unlikely attempts to contact eastern Washington will be made until the near future. The people after all these years are fond of this weird brand of isolationist attitudes, and vengeful thinking they have adopted. The people here don't trust anything related to the United States, and if the leaders in their opinion ever decide to come out of their bunkers they can leave or die here. Any time american flags are found they are gathered, and used for a form of spectacularly dark execution innocently named "flag burning". Of course the practice is reserved for traitors, and those who violate the highest principles of laws enforced in the Puget Sound.

Naming the country republic is merely a token to the past, and nothing more. There used to be nations that had republic in their name as well, and weren't even remotely a republic at all. Give it several generations, and people will forget the significance of this or think it a convenient myth. It probably wont take long as children born back then are starting to doubt things their parents tell them about the old world as nonsense. I don't think anyone can blame them, but for the teenagers it must be hard since they have had to adjust to this new world like their parents.

Army Technology: Back before the "suns wrath" there were plenty of military bases in the Puget sound region. They have been consolidated into a few strategic bases, and their stockpile is rarely used out of fear. Primitive weaponry is mandatory to use unless in cases of emergencies. Civilian militias can be spotted wielding anything they can find, but there is a debate over the merits of using air guns in the future. At the moment the military is not expecting to enter a full scale war with anyone, and hopefully we wont have to.
