Wow. And you're right, things might have been better.

2016 was the first election season I followed much. I wanted Ben Carson to win, if only because it would set a precedent that you didn't have to shout and defame everyone to win the Oval Office. That's why I look up to Jimmy Carter. People generally see him as an ineffective president, but what was important about him was that he acted based on his conscience, not on what would gain him votes. He was a real person, not a politician. Maybe I can meet him someday, I don't think he lives very far from me.

then malnutrition as a prisoner of war should have taken a few years off, one cause or another, so you could say he's 25 or 30 years past his use-by

so yeah, pretty good run

and the health insurance members of Congress have (for life) will give him the best treatment money can buy, maybe we shouldn't be TOO sorry for him

Just because he's going to get good treatment for a lower price doesn't mean he deserves any less sympathy for his condition.

That's....not how it works. Life expectancy numbers arent projections for how long someone born at that time will live, because obviously there will be medical advances in years to come.

Yeah, I like Carter too. What might have seemed like ineffectual bleating about human rights actually put a lot of pressure on the Soviet Union, reflected in the easing of press and political restrictions under Gorbachev, and it's not too much I think to give Carter equal credit to Reagan for the US part in the abdication of Soviet Communism. Good cop, bad cop, if you don't mind. Though the fall of the Soviets was ultimately more their own doing than that of any US government.

Carter would have been a much greater President if his own party hadn't blocked so much of his agenda, particularly his desire to achieve energy independence through renewables and nuclear generation. Damn the hippies.

Not so much for Ben Carson though. The civility is good, but he seems widely ignorant of anything outside his medical specialty and doesn't even have the public administration background to appoint good advisors. Not the worst of the Republican field, but not good either. EDIT: The civility is kind of suspect too, if it means he doesn't have the guts to disavow Trump for being grossly uncivil ... it remains to be seen if he has the guts to be a good Health Secretary but his known views against Medicaid suggest he'll actually be terrible and support efforts of Republicans in Congress to make budget cuts targetting the poor, the elderly and the disabled. I mean fuck, if he's bad as administrator of Health which he should know something about, just how bad would he have been as administrator of everything?

Another thing that bugs me is Carter did the work getting the hostages out of Iran, trying up until the minute he had to leave office basically, but Reagan got the credit. An hour into Reagan's administration they were released, because Iran didn't want Carter to be seen as the man who got them out. They hated him that much. It's sad. And though the hostage crisis was Carter's fault in a way, it happened because he gave medical care to Iran's ex-leader that he couldn't get outside of America, out of sympathy.

Carter then went to visit the hostages, and there were tears of joy when they met them.

And I admittedly never did much research about Carson. I guess I just became tired of nasty politics the moment I was introduced to them.

But all this is a topic for another thread and another time, I guess...

If 2015/2016 was when you first started taking an interest in politics, take some solace in my assurance that it wasn't always that bad. The US might recover, as it has before, from partisan division which forgets any common interest and sinks to pure ratfuckery.

2016 was a terrible election. They aren't usually so divisive, stressful, and all around nasty.

2008 was a lot better. McCain was better than any of the Republicans who were serious contenders this time around. His speech-writers and campaign advisers were completely incompetent and Sarah Palin was a moronic choice for VP, but when McCain would just be real instead of running through the scripted crap the party told him to say, he came across as a decent dude. He sometimes sounded like he was out of touch and stuck in the Cold War, which was annoying, but he wasn't bad enough to be scary the way Trump and Cruz are.

On the Dems' side, Obama/Biden was just a good ticket.

Obama and McCain are the type of people that can get past their political differences enough to respect each other and have some class. This is why 2008 was better than 2016.

I once tried to K Me. Posted It and Reported. Locked by Mods. I am Autistic accounts for Repetitive Nature. I am Very Civil and Respectful to all on NS and off NS. My Opinions Are Not Bad Opinions No Ones Opinions Are Bad Opinons. We are on NS, to share, discuss, argue, disagree, on Trump, elections, Republicans, Democrats, Socialists, Libertarians and whatevers, with respect. This Respect Is Given It Is Not Earned, This Respect Is Called Freedom of Expression and Democracy. This Man Always Says What He Means, I Am The Real Thing. I Make Ted Cruz look like a Leftist. I have been on NS For over 10 Years with a Perfect Record of No Baiting, Trolling, Flaming, or Using Foul Language. I Am Very Proud of It and Wish To Keep My Record Clean. But I Am Not The Only One On NS. GMS. I'm Based.
