Net Neutrality Protest - Thousands of Sites Join

Postby Calladan » Tue Jul 11, 2017 5:00 pm

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-40575882

An estimated 80,000 websites and services are to join a protest against the FCC's plans to roll back Obama's laws on net neutrality on Wednesday.

The FCC (controlled by Republicans) want to give priority to certain groups, while major sites and services (including Google, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Pornhub and - to some people's surprise - AT&T) believe this would be a retrograde step plunging the internet into a dark era of global disparity.

I really don't see how anyone can be against the basic principle that the net should be the same for everyone. That ISPs argue that it stifles innovation and investment, but if the last twenty, thirty years have shown us anything, it's that that argument is bollocks, because net neutrality has existed since the internet was born and clearly people have invested and innovated.

All it does stifle is the ability to make more money, and the ability to charge people who want their sites to be serviced faster a higher rate than people who don't care. And the ability for the rich corporations to get faster service speeds than the poor (which is a very Republican thing to want to do, from what I understand).

I am all for this protest, and I hope it works in the way the anti-anti-piracy laws protest worked. (Which apparently it did).

More so because the FCC is a regulatory body for one country and yet if they get their way, they will affect the entire world with their decisions, which seems a tad unfair to the rest of us.

But maybe someone else has a different opinion. Should companies be able to pay to get priority speed and service and traffic rights on the internet? Should net neutrality become a thing of the past, and money rule above all else?

Literally anyone using the internet should be for net neutrality, and if they arent, I know who they watch for news.

I really hope this doesn't go through.
Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

I'm FOR Net Neutrality.

Quite frankly, I don't think the FCC should have any authority over the internet. Simply because they're a regulatory body for the USA, yet any decisions related to the internet effects the entire world.

That's all I can say on the matter.

Give Uncle Sam more regulatory power (which he would never ever abuse) or trust Big Business. Hmm....

Politicians, at least, have an interest in keeping their constituents happy and content. Business owners do not necessarily have the same goal, especially if you have something like the status quo where ISPs like Comcast are regularly rated as being some of the worst companies in America yet still being able to make massive profit.

America already has one of the slowest internet speeds on average.

It's already being starved.

Our politicians have shown a total disregard for freedom and privacy, you mean to tell me with a straight face that will change just because they are supposed to care for our wishes? Please, that lie was shown with Obama's actions on the matter. I'd sooner trust Comcast at this point. Its the same sort of lie about the market and companies. They are supposed to keep us happy and content too. Wishful thinking at best.

Big Gubment can already search through your internet history and corporations are more than willing to sell that info to advertisers.

If privacy is your biggest concern, I still think your best bet is pressuring the government. Still being looked at either way.

Yes, why would I want to give Uncle Sam even more power over the internet? Regulations can be a weapon to shut down dissent as much as laws. Should I suddenly believe he will behave altruistically after the privacy stuff?

You have no reason to believe Uncle Sam will suddenly turn into China. Especially if it's implemented in such a way that would prevent people from abusing it, which would be in both party's long-term interests.

Regulations, via regulatory capture, can also be a way to further big business. Big business and big government are friends, not enemies...grow one and you grow the other.

With the cast we have in Government right now? Absolutely not, thats is entirely open to abuse. As if the Obama administration was any better on rights anyway. The word of the government regarding rights online has been proven bankrupt time and time again. Long-term interests of business not to let it be abused either. The arguments being used for government can just as easily be applied to business. I'd just as well get fucked by Comcast as I would Uncle Sam. Which is one better? Its a wash really.
