Police Dog Fired for Being Too Friendly

Postby Engleberg » Tue Jun 13, 2017 5:55 pm

http://www.fox5ny.com/news/260571013-story

A calmer story on NSG that I found today and found it interesting:

A police dog in training had to change careers once his owners realized he was just too friendly for the force.

The German shepherd, Gavel, who participated in months of training to be a police dog in Australia, “did not display the necessary aptitude for a life on the frontline."

Gavel participated in a 16-month training program for police dogs, but once officials realized he loved people and belly rubs far too much, they cut him loose.

The governor of Queensland, Paul de Jersey, then gave him a job fit for his personality instead, vice-regal dog.

“He may have missed out on becoming a Queensland Police Service Dog, but it is abundantly clear that Gavel has the characteristics necessary to adequately fulfil duties as Queensland's official Vice-Regal Dog,” the governor wrote on his Facebook page.

Gavel’s new responsibilities include greeting visitors and attending official ceremonies.

"Gavel on occasions sits in on briefings with the governor," a spokesperson for the governor’s office said. Gavel has also demonstrated his capacity to uphold the ceremonial importance of his role at State of Origin time."

Just wanted to share a nice story with y'all. As for an opinion, I personally think that it was right to "fire" the dog for being too friendly - unless it was a form of PR police dog. I own a German Shepherd and he can often be too friendly when he wants to be. So NSG, do you think that the dog's new position is justified or should it have been given to a civilian family?

I can't think of a better way to neutralize dangerous criminals tbh, the Queensland police force missed out on a great recruit.

He's very cute:)

I have a soft spot for dogs I must admit. This story is an older one, but personally I think the Dog should've contacted his union rep and sued the Qld Police for unfair dismissal.

Why would they cut him from the Police Force?? :eyebrow:

Tens of thousands of dollars of money would have probably been spent on training the dog which is now "Down the drain"

Disapointing~ :(

You're right, they should have kept on a police dog who'd roll over and try to get belly rubs from criminals.

But if they don't rub his belly, he'd probably rip their faces off.

It's a story with a happy ending, though perhaps the doggo could have still had a place on the force, just as a therapy animal or something along those lines. But this works too, and doesn't require a whole new set of training and the associated costs that go with it.

The Governor is a civilian.

Basically, the Governor took a shine to the dog and adopted him. The "official" position he know holds is just a bit of fun.
