Your Favorite Cities? Least Favorites?

Postby Major-Tom » Tue Jun 13, 2017 3:19 pm

Alright, so there's a lot of drama going on right now. From Theresa May shooting herself in the foot, to Jeff Sessions not being able to remember a damn thing about anything, it seems like all of our topics here are about dramatic political shit.

Let's take a break from that. I've done a lot of traveling in my life and I've been to some extraordinary cities and some lackluster cities that I simply wanted to leave.

For example, my favorites are/were Vancouver for it's walkability, clean skies, good weather, and modern architecture. Vienna for it's cultural attractions, walkability, friendly people, and architectural beauty. Denver for being a vibrant town and beautiful city next to the Rockies. And Paris simply because, well, it's Paris and I loved it.

As for the worst I've experienced? I'd have to say Tucson (I'm obligated to hate Tucson), Albuquerque (boring as fuck and full of sprawl and drugs), and Las Vegas, a depressing mistake of a city.

But enough about my opinions. What do you think, NSG?

I hate New york and LA equally.
The mere fact that i pissed someone off either means i stood for something or i said something offensive.
in this day and age it's both.

I really don't go to cities with populations over 100 thousand, but when I went to NYC in 2014, I absolutely fell in love with the place.
Not enough to live there, mind you, our politics just wouldn't mix, but I wouldn't mind visiting again.
Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

NYC is pretty neat. The traffic sucks, but all the different districts and the mix of cultures there was awesome for me. I'd go again for sure.

As for LA? Never was a fan.

I've not been to many really big cities; mainly Chicago and DC. However, if I look at things as a whole, most of my least favorite cities are in California.

My favorite city is Portland, OR. The dream of the 90's truly is alive in Portland and it has one of the largest bookstores in the United States. Oh, and it's a cleaner, literally greener, and nicer version of San Francisco. Alternatively, I would pick Salzburg, Austria as a close second. It's a wonderful city but has the issues I have with much of Europe... too many national holidays when I need to shop and it's difficult to get a properly cold beverage.

My least favorite city would have to be New Orleans, LA. The few times I've had to go there, I've always felt grimy after being outside for a short time.

I've only been to Austin for a few days but I thought it was such an amazing city. I'm from right outside of Philadelphia, but there's something so unique and cool about Austin, I can't wait to go back.
I also went to New Orleans for a music festival back when I was in college. Such a great culture there, and the food is next level.

I really love San Francisco, its amazing city. I currently live near Duluth, Minnesota and i really don't like it. I live in a small town like 20 miles from Duluth, i call it Redneck, Minnesota because frankly there are quite a few Rednecks. I am not a redneck, so i fit in horribly. The only other person i can relate to is my girlfriend, otherwise i might as well live in China, the culture is so different from me.

I live and work in SF Bay Area and I absolutely love it. It's vibrant, modern, and open-minded. I just can't stand how expensive everything is. A dinner out with my girlfriend could cost upwards $100 at a decent restaurant.

I took a Europe holiday a year ago, and I can say that I legitimately enjoyed every city sans the cities in Italy. I don't know what it is, but Italy really irked me. I skipped Rome and visited Venice, Florence, and some village in Tuscany, and I was extremely underwhelmed. Furthermore, a lot of the nice touristy European cities in general tend to be overrated. Paris was full of culture, but I feel I got the same value from Munich and Strasbourg.

I like nearly all cities I can think of, with my favorite being Boulder, CO. The only city I can think of that I don't like is Phoenix.

Sacramento is among my favorite cities because I know someone that lives there. I also like New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles due to all the activity that goes on there. There is so much to do in those three cities. I do not like Wichita, Kansas because it is so boring. It is basically one big flat suburb.

Copenhagen is far and away the best city I've been to, Vancouver a distant second. Paris, Montreal, New York among those in the middle, Toronto, DC towards the bottom.

I've been to Salzburg. It was pretty but overly touristy in my opinion. As in, the city's culture was pretty much defined by Mozart and tourism and nothing else.

I love San Antonio, Texas and Washington, D.C. I lived in SA for half my life and it's just fantastic. Especially the weather. It's perfect. As for DC? While I only attended American University there for a year, most of my Mom's side of the family lives just outside of DC in Maryland. We've visited many times and I just love the city.
You'd better believe I'm a bitter Bernie Sanders supporter. The Dems fucked up and fucked up hard. Hopefully they'll learn that neoliberalism and maintaining the status quo isn't the way to win this election or any other one. I doubt they will, though.

I live in Phoenix. Next week, the highs are forecasted to range from 114-120. Don't believe me? Google it.

Oroville CA. Fuck that place. Never before have I seen a man drive up to a gas station, get out of the car with a crowbar, try to pry off his door and fail, then get back in and drive away as if nothing ever happened.

The entire town is on drugs.

Neighboring Chico is nice though. It is only a few hundred dollar fine if you detonate a nuclear weapon within city limits, so that's decent.

I haven't travelled terribly far, but in my experience New York, Quebec City and Montreal are pretty nice (provided you don't mind the horrible architecture and relatively benign mafia presence in the case of the latter), Orlando is relatively okay, and Toronto is a god-awful cesspool of concrete and depravity.

Visiting both Montreal and Quebec City for the first time this summer (want to escape the oppressive Phoenix heat and also enjoy the nightlife). Any suggestions?

I like New York a lot.
I visited Miami, it's really colorful and vibrant and easily one of my favorites. Downtown is really cool.
West Palm is also really nice, perhaps not as eventful as Miami.

Although I've driven through a lot of cities those are the only ones I've really visited and experienced. Thinking of maybe going to San Diego or taking a trip to Italy/Greece in the near future though. Suggestions?

So far my favourite city has been Munich although London would be very close up there. Innsbruck and Dubai deserve an honorary mention too. As for my least favourite cities, I've had no bad experiences anywhere, so apart from the ones here in Ireland.
