Solely because of their religion, and they murdered, maimed and traumatised hundreds of people for something so fucking trivial as being a catholic. The majority of IRA combatants killed were killed by security forces such as the police and army. Loyalist paramilitaries were nothing more than kill squads who abducted people from catholic communities (sometimes mistaking their own people for being catholic, or just for having catholic friends) and then torturing and murdering them.

Yeah this. I'm absolutely sick of people coming to the conclusion that because the IRA were bad that the Loyalists were good. And not only did they murder Catholics, but they often did it in the most awful ways, such as was the case with the aptly named Shankill Butchers.

Ahem, clues are in the names. I will readily support the actions of a loyalist faction to the union over a separatist even if they are more brutal. The Crown must always prevail.

So you are fine with all the innocent people they killed purely because they were a loyalist group?

They would have killed you for being a catholic, does not matter how much you like the crown or want it to prevail. You are their enemy as far as you are concerned, and during the troubles, they would have ripped our guts out or put a bullet in your head as they did to plenty of people who did no wrong. This is fucking delusion beyond belief.

They would literally carve you to pieces for being a Catholic. If the Crown needs that kind of support then it clearly has outlived its usefulness.

I don't think it was about religion, that's just propaganda, whilst I condemn the terror bombing of IRA, their armed struggle against the British state was no less legitimate than America's war of independence against the British (concluding in 1776),in my opinion.

Well that's a bit rum and unfortunate and if I was a victim I might have a different stance but the fact remains that I find them less odious than Sinn Fein.

I fucking hate the Church too, but no wrong? Let's be very clear - his rhetoric against Catholics in the 60s and 70s was a contributing factor to the Troubles as he inspired a bunch of Protestant "Ulster Loyalists" to rise up and start some shit with militant Catholics.

Furthermore, he helped organize a paramilitary movement and opposed the peace process in the 1990s that nearly effectively ended the Troubles.

Even the Reagan government, which was effectively more willing to side with the Loyalists, blocked Paisley from entering the US because they deemed him as dangerous. This is the same administration that was fine with Apartheid but not Ian Paisley.

Honestly Nap? The guy sounded like an old, crusty, hateful piece of crap who only tried to shed that image in the 2000s.

I guess the loyalists paramilitaries are worse than I thought. However, generally, I don't think Ireland's history can be summed up as religious conflict and I do concede the to the point you've just made.
