puz tell me about neck snapping and my idea of a head twisting box

So I imagine it's a chair with the device mounted on the back rest. There's a box/cage put on the victim's head and it's rather tight fitting so that the head turns with it. The idea is you crank it and the box/cage spins nice and slow, twisting the head right round like a record baby right round round round

I wanna know at what point would this kill the neck and how much would it hurt being turned very slowly.

The range of motion for the neck is 45° flexation and 45° extension (though generally weight, muscular mass and general lack of a need to look "up" reduces this to about 40°), 60° left and right rotation, and 45° lateral flexation, ±2-5° typical range of motion.
The cervical spine can tolerate minor extensions behind this point. Off the top of my head I don't know what they are but no normal person ever really escapes a +10° rotation beyond 60° without significant injury, and the head was not intended to be depressed or extended beyond 45-ish degrees

Probably generally not very painful because until the person begins egressing beyond typical range of motion mechanical work will need to overcome one single barrier and then it's all very easy to do, so unless you somehow have a very good interrupting gear in an era before interrupting gears exist all that mechanical force will just snap it quickly. You can, unless you have injury to your C/T discs, meningitis, or neuro-muscular pain, rotate your neck quite easily to maximum position without worry of pain, and do so with relative ease.

The machine needs to swiftly convert it's energy to rotational force to snap the neck, because one of the biggest ways cervical spinal injuries occurre are sudden application of force. The muscles of the neck are extremely strong, you need 1,000-1250ftlb torque to snap it.

Just hang them. You need 5.75ft/1.76m of rope and a swift kick to create a hangman's fracture.

Well I dunno about hanging being an alternative since I was thinking of it as a unique torture device more than execution, but either is good. If not really painful, would it be at least extremely uncomfortable for the head to be forced that far and kept there for extended periods?

And when the neck is snapped in that manner, is it instant lights out and dead? It would be nice if that wasn't the case and they could be kept alive :>

A short drop and it all comes to a sudden stop. Third most cost effective way of executing someone, just behind beheading and a single shot.
