If you want to claim that Nixon was racist and further tarnish his image, you should provide more than a paraphrased quote with questionable authenticity.

Try listening to his tapes. He was obviously racist, in the sense that he held blanket views about particular ethnic groups like Jews, Italians, and Irish, that were vaguely insulting and demeaning, but it was a sort of benign racism that you'd expect from "the time" rather than overt hostility. Racist is still racist, though racism itself is a spectrum. Nixon falls into the more benign side of racism, of "mild disparaging remarks and benevolent paternalism" rather than "race war".

do you even know what you are talking about?

you asked me about my stance on gun control and then you called me a hypocrite because how dare i think some gun control in america might be a good thing especially when i am anti the drug war that' you think is all about fighting drug abuse. (but only against the drugs that the government decide arent acceptable for our legal consumption)

making drugs a health issue and not a criminal one will save lives.

making you all a bit more accountable on guns is likely to help as well and i say this because in my country we have changed our laws and so far so good.

I am seriously not trying to be mean, but is english your first language?

Nixon liked blacks.

He just thought they'd need time to intermingle with the Anglo-Saxon majority before they could realize their full potential. Shades of Mencken.

Would you argue that the concept of a "war against drugs" is faulty in and of itself? Or is this problem exclusive to the United States?

Eh, he was... very bitchy.

I don't think a lot of the things Nixon ranted about in the tapes can necessarily be held against him. He talked shit about pretty much everyone, including the US military, and I don't think it can rightly be claimed that Nixon was anti-military.

And in terms of the Jews, Nixon was pretty much best of friends with Henry Kissinger, so I don't think one can call him an anti-semite. He just talked shit... a lot.

The government should never interfere in the market. Period.

The mental disconnect people have can be astonishing. Don't like x behavior? Just pass some laws! People often forget that law enforcement requires funds and equipment as well as the threat of force; in this case, the threat of force is directed at people doing as they choose with their own bodies.

Plus, the market will always find a way. It didn't work in the 1920s, or in the 80s, and it doesn't work now.

Maybe instead of locking up addicts, they can be given (by force) some of those hallucinogens that stop the urge for drugs.

Ah yes, freedom obsessed Americans love to accuse the government of tryanny for even daring to take away their "god-given" right to destroy themselves. I seriously can't understand why people think like this.

The obvious solution is to make it less easy to grow and transport. Of course getting the american government to sign off on the conversion of most major Urban centers into fortified arcologies so that we can meaningfully suppress the flow of illicit goods is a pipe dream.

The war on drugs(and by extension most attempts at prohibition of societal ills) does not work because it does not accomplish the goal of the laws; stopping people from doing drugs, while at the same time it makes drug providers less responsive to other legal restrictions, meaning the industry is more harmful then it would otherwise be.

[proposal=]I believe it would be more effective to reform the drug prescription system to reduce the amount of people getting addicted to prescription drugs and giving addicts the option to take ibogaine http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-17666589 in order to eliminate the craving for drugs. "Rights" don't exist in nature, and I'm an agnostic. All I'm saying is that it isn't the state's job to protect people from themselves. Especially considering that means more money taken from taxpayers to do so. If someone wants to go and kill themselves, who am I to stop them?

Genivaria wrote:That statement is incredibly naive.

Not an argument. Government intervention in the economy is incredibly wasteful and ineffective. Prohibition in the 1920s was an absolute disaster.

Maybe I just really like being able to run my life as I see fit.

But as far as "freedom-lovers" go, I am admittedly on the more extreme end.

When we say that the war on drugs does not work, we mean that it has failed to reduce drug use, drug trafficking, and drug manufacturing. It has failed on all these accounts. In fact, drug cartel violence remains an epidemic, especially in parts of Latin America. Drugs are far less safe and healthy than they could be with regulation rather than prohibition. The war on drugs is killing people and destroying people's lives just for smoking a bit of weed. It has done nothing to help anyone except the prison industry, and has hurt millions upon millions of people.

Plus, there's this little thing called freedom. Smoking weed doesn't affect anyone but yourself. Why should you be punished for doing something that doesn't cause harm to others?
