Contexto:

The Zimmerman telegram was the secret communication between the German Empire and Mexico in January of 1917. The telegram outlined that in the event of the United States entering into the Great War on the side of the Allies that Mexico should in turn join the Central Powers. In return for this alliance, after the war was won Mexico would receive their former provinces of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. This telegram was intercepted by the United States, one month later the United States would declare war on the Central powers - and Mexico. The second Mexican-American War would officially end on November 18th, 1918, with the whole of Mexico being occupied by the American military. A provision in the Treaty of Versailles would split Mexico in half 100 kilometers north of Mexico city. Each respective side, north and south, would be declared a sovereign nation independent from the other half. In addition to this, Neither nation could raise a military with manpower exceeding 100,000 and the United States would have permanent bases in each nation's capital city: Monterrey ( North ), Mexico City ( South ). America had all but finally annexed their southern neighbor. The United States appointed turn-coat general. Maximiliano Castanzo as President of the Republic of South Mexico. Gen. Castanzo was famously paranoid, and irrational, and despite these aliments, the United States chose him for the simple reason of his being a coward, whom would never challenge them. Gen. Castanzo would nationalize the numerous farms and plantations of South Mexico and sell them to cronies, personal friends, and even some US companies. The profits generated by these sales were pocketed by Castanzo directly, and never saw the treasury. In order to please his American masters, Castanzo mandated that every farm in the country had to produce a minimum amount of either cotton, sugar, or tobacco. The owners of the farms and plantations found that many of their workers would often strike out on their own after a while and start farms of their own and would sell crops for their own personal profit. This competition was quickly snuffed out after state-sponsored share-cropping was enacted. In toe with his dillusions, shortly after ascending to the presidency, Gen. Castanzo would institute brutal security measures in the Yucatan area, specifically targeting Mayans. Castanzo intentionally cut education to the Yucatan peninsula, banned Mayans from serving in the government or in a jury, and private property owned by Mayans was outlawed. Mayans who protested were arrested, and often executed. Among the many thousands of farm hands who suffered under the brutal share-cropping system established a successive string of unions. At first they were tolerated, but after strikes began getting proposed the government quickly stepped in, jailing known members and executing leaders. Finally, by 1925, 7 years into the Castanzo regime, the Church decided to take a stand. Arch bishop Enrique Nieto of Mexico City made a public plea to Castanzo, to end the discrimination against the Mayans in the Yucatan. The day after the announcement, the Abby where Arch Bishp Nieto resided was raided by federal soldiers. The entire staff was arrested and thrown into prison, under charges of sedition. Arch Bishop Nieto was executed. Castanzo would declare South Mexico a secular state the same day as Nieto's execution. This was the breaking point for the people of South Mexico. Spontaneous uprisings began to occur in the countryside amongst the poor farmers, urbanites would take to the streets and would battle police officers, the Yucatan was in full blown rebellion! Gen. Castanzo deployed his forces, but there were simply too many fires to put out, and more were constantly springing up. After the first three weeks of revolt, the first partisan groups began organizing and targeting government buildings - and officials. 6 months into the conflict, the military had lost 1 in 3 men to fighting the partisans. The tipping point was when Chief of the military Roberto Castanzo ( brother of the president ) was killed while in combat outside of Guadalajara. This marked the collapse of the military, and in turn Castanzo's presidency. In July of 1926, Gen. Castanzo secured asylum to North Mexico. His departure time was leaked to partisans however, and on July 15th, at 6:00 a.m., an unknown group of partisans attacked the train station where Castanzo was boarding a train to leave for North Mexico. Castanzo was shot and killed. By the end of his life, Gen. Castanzo's violence and tyranny had taken the lives of upward 125,000 people. The death of Castanzo was announced through underground newspapers, the week following his death was marked by national celebration by the people. After the weeks end though, these same underground newspapers headlined a single question: What Now? The revolution which toppled Castanzo was not an organized front, but rather it had been made up of dozens of groups, all working independently. Many of these groups had become quite powerful by this time, and each had conflicting ideas of how the country should be run. In addition to this, there were still at least 5,000 soldiers of the former Castanzo military still unaccounted for - where were they? And most pressing of all, what would the Americans do about losing one of their puppets?

I know what you're thinking, that's an ugly flag. You're right, it's absolute garbage! A good representation of the regime which ruled under it. But that regime is gone now, and the Republic of South Mexico is in a state of Limbo. There really is no government - no one is collecting taxes, no one is paving the roads, no civil servant is getting paid, no court cases are being had, and outside of local rebel groups no one is enforcing the law. South Mexico just got out of the tyranny of Gen. Castanzo and is unsure what to do now that it is free - We are unsure of what to do. You are a citizen of South Mexico, and you lived through the Tyranny of Castanzo. What you did during the war or what you do now may very well be crucial to the future of your country: banker, soldier, clergy, partisan, journalist, peon, what ever! You are in this stateless state and now must ask yourself, what now?

In this RP you will play as a citizen of South Mexico one week after the death of former president, Gen. Castanzo. Your occupation can be anything, so long as you are within South Mexico. Show us your character's perspective of this war-torn country!

A little review of the current national situation: Along with their being no official government, the country is starving. Castanzo's agricultural policies favored cash crops over food, which made things scarce to begin with, add onto that a civil war and already 6,000 people have starved to death. Despite the death of the president, the war is not technically over; although fighting has all but seized, there are still 5,000 government soldiers unaccounted for. In regards for accounted for government workers, there are some 7,500 government employees currently in captivity amongst the numerous partisan groups. Some are just harmless civil servants, others are war-criminals. Figuring out who is who has proven difficult. In terms of money, the economy has collapsed, the peso is worthless, and 25% of the population is unemployed.

RULES:
1. General NS rules
2. You are not one of the partisans who killed Castanzo, sorry, but no one gets to be that famous
3. The total population of South Mexico is 35 million, so no membership number should be too big
4. You must post in character, you cannot just give a rundown of what happens
5. You must be realistic

Character app
Name: Augusto Diaz
Appearance:
Image

Age: 35
Gender: Hombre
Ethnicity: Mayan
Religion: Non-practicing catholic
Occupation: Partisan leader
Bio: Augusto born to poor Mayan farmers in the Yucatan. His parents managed to scratch by enough money for him to go to university in Mexico City, were he would study to become biologist. His studies would take him to Paris, where he would first be introduced to the concept of Socialism, which enthralled him while he was there. After finishing his studies at 22, he would return to Mexico and would work at a local conservatory, conducting censuses on local wildlife. His position would spare him from the draft when Mexico entered into the war. After Castanzo outlawed Mayans from civil service, Augusto became one of the millions of South Mexico's farmers, working the same field his father had owned - only now owned by a Mestizo. Once share-cropping was instituted, Augusto and 50 other farm hands formed a trade union. When local police heard caught wind that they intended to strike, the union headquarters was raided, and 14 of it's members were arrested. Augusto and the rest of the union would narrowly escape capture by fleeing into the jungle. Augusto would be separated from the group, and for the next 3 years would lay low from the authorities, by traveling village to village and using false aliases. After the execution of Arch Bishop Nieto, he finally came out of hiding and participated in the protests. He would come into contact with some of his former union members, and convinced them to join him as partisans. Several accepted, and the Peoples Freedom Front was formed - with 9 members. They would start by attacking patrolling police officers, or throwing Molotov cocktails into government buildings. the PFF began recruiting other Mayans though threw underground anti-government meetings. Augusto proved a charismatic leader, by 1926 he had garnered some 300 fighters. By this time the PFF had taken over a quarter of the Yucatan peninsula, and had even liberated the city of Cancun from government forces. Proceeding the death of Gen. Castanzo, Augusto has began to speculate about the future situation. He is deeply concerned for the future of Mexico, and the Mayan people.

Occupation: Nurse and rebel leader.
Bio: During her life under the despotic regime of Castanzo, Rosia Fernandez took the high-road when it came to revolutionary and rebellious causes. Rosia was and still is a fully qualified nurse, taking her medicinal talents to her local hospital. She also had an urge to help her fellow Mexicans, especially in the turbulent times, even growing a hatred towards the Government due to inactivity to prevent illness and disease. In hers short period of working as a nurse, Rosia witnessed first-hand the atrocities that had been brought across their nation, usually illegally giving aid to those hurt in riots or other public demonstrations that turned violent. After a particular incident, however, in her home city of Tuxtla, when peaceful protestors were fired upon by the military police, Rosia's hatred only burned brighter. The total casualty count was in the twentys, all who could have been saved if there were enough staff onsite. As public dissent became more prevalent, she became active in protesting. Rosia was arrested for defiling a public image of Castanzo and was placed into prison without appearing in court, a few months later she and her fellow prisoners (all who admired her personality and charisma) were liberated by a militia. From there, her and her new following returned to Tuxtla and assumed control over the city by default.

Name: Francisco de Trinidad y Tobago
Appearance:
Image
Age: 57
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Mexican
Religion: Roman Catholic
Occupation: Religious leader, Archishop of México
Bio: Before the Partition, Francisco was the Bishop of Toluca, in the Cathedral of San José de Nazaret. He was a traditionalist, a hard-liner, and a conservative most of all. His heart and mind have always been with scripture, and the salvation of human souls on earth. He is also of a school that believes all power eventually comes from the Lord, but that the most direct way to achieve that link with God is the best. In other words: a theocratic monarchy, headed by a divinely inspired monarch and the Church, would be the perfect state. Of course, in times of relative peace, this kind of thought does not get much attention. But during the Mexican civil war, the Mexican-American war, and the following ‘secular period’ under the Castanzo regime, his hard-line views got a lot of attention. Many people flocked to his lectures on the nature of Christ, on how a government should function, and how the ills of society were a plan of God to punish Mexico for her sins. When Nieto was executed, a fate Francisco happily escaped, he got enough popular support to take his place, at least in the minds of the people. In their minds, because the Church was stripped bare in the secular period. In the 6 months revolution that followed, while keeping a political middle ground, Francisco worked hard to rouse up support for the rebellion among the religiously-minded. Eventually, after the death of Castanzo’s brother, Francisco firmly sided with the rebels, allowing his own armed gangs to secure the religious quarter surrounding the Cathedral. Whether it was Francisco who leaked the information to the rebels is unknown. He is a prime suspect, because of his close ties with the Regime, but it could also have been someone else. That is all in the past, however. Now, Francisco is looking to rekindle Mexico in his own image. A veritable crusade is at hand to unite the whole of Southern Mexico in a divinely inspired state, where strong religious morals decide matters of law.

Participating membership: 300
Current situation: The Organización controls the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City, along with the surrounding area. The organisation has been looking to expand, perhaps dragging in the other mayor ecclesial provinces along with them. The organisation is trying to attract membership from the more religiously-minded, especially in rural areas. They stand for a strong state wherein religion is a cornerstone, and where the Church has an important say in worldly matters as well via their interpretation of scripture.

Bio: Born in Mexico city to Mexican parents who emmigrated to the USA in the early 1890's, Axel was raised to be both Mexican and American; speaking Spanish at home and English at school. After finishing his education, he enlisted in the USA Army but had left the service by the time the First World War broke out, entering employment instead with the Pinkerton Detective Agency, spending his time successfully hunting down and capturing organised crime members who didn't cooperate with the war footing the US government was currently in. After the war and the rise of Gen. Castanzo in South Mexico, Axel was deployed to the region, ostentibly to monitor American corporate interests but mainly to deal with potential troublemaking unionists by gathering dirt and making life difficult for them. As the uprisings began, Axel was given a new role; to travel to the dangerous Yucatan area and monitor the partisan groups there; gathering information on any Americans that may have travelled there for ideological reasons and to ensure they didn't bring their dangerous attitudes back home. The death of Gen. Castanzo has made Axel's mission even more critical as victorious American anarchists and communists might seek to emulate their success against a larger target.
To further the goals of his assignment, Axel has cultivated a neutral attitude towards non-American partisans, offering his skills and network of informants as a quasi-intelligence gathering service, on the understanding that he is told about any American born partisans that may arrive in the region.
Current location: Merida

Group name: Pinkerton Detective Agency
What kind of organization are you? : Quasi-governmental Agency
Who is in charge?: Simón Zoido (in Mexico City)
Participating membership: 20 Agents (in all South Mexico), ~200 informants
Current situation: The Pinkertons are currently spread rather thinly throughout the whole region, with Axel the only active agent in the Yucatan area.

Name: Florent Nayal
Appearance:
Image

Age: 30
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Franco-Mayan
Religion: Roman Catholic
Occupation: Catholic friar of the Order of St. Augustine
Bio: Florent was born in Cancun, the only child, to a scholarly father proud of his Mayan descent and a French mother, his upbringing was one of ease as his father was a respected figure in academia, if not also controversial for his participation and founding of Mayan inspired occult groups. When young Florent was only baptized because his grandparents refused to let their grandson not be baptized and so his only familial exposure to Catholicism came from both his Mayan and French grandparents while both of his parents were heavily involved in the occult. With the onset of the Great War and subsequent installation of General Castanzo the life of Florent took a sharp turn towards the worse as his father was killed by authorities a mere six months after General Castanzo took power because of his outspoken critiques of the new government and his mother soon disappeared as well leaving Florent in the care of his grandparents of Mayan descent, both of who were poor farmers forced to work in the fields but they still tried to shield Florent from the worst of their situation, even though he was 17 at the time. Soon after both his grandfather and grandmother died from old age and exhaustion, mere weeks apart from each other, and Florent's grandmother gave him her rosary as a parting gift telling him to always pray for the world. After this his grandparents in France were able to find him and smuggle him out of the country and back to France where he lived with them for a year in their estate where he embraced the Catholic faith entirely and joined the Order of St. Augustine on his 19th birthday. Throughout his studies he traveled as a pilgrim starting with Rome and sailed to Jerusalem, where he became recognized as a mystic, until he was 22 when he returned back to Mexico with the permission of his superiors to minister to the suffering. Back in Mexico Florent was appalled that conditions seemed to have gotten even worse from when he last there, going to the Augustinian monastery of San Agustin of Yuiria to reestablish the prominence of the Augustinian Order he began organizing groups of people, farmers, clergy, factory workers, and even some policemen to resist the abuses of the government which earned him a jail sentence and was sentenced to be executed, the execution was supposed to take place next week but the uprising began, led by the group he formed, and they stormed the prison where Florent was held. Before the bloodshed could continue Brother Florent took control of the situation and halted the fighting, able to negotiate the surrender and fair treatment of his former captives. Soon after he led his group into battle, armed with only his rosary and a banner of the Holy Family and secured almost all of Guanajuato beginning to set up a Kingdom of God on Earth, one where Jesus Christ would be the center of all people's lives, where all are afforded the dignity of being brothers and sisters in Christ, where the state nor corporations would oppress the Holy Mother Church, and no people would find themselves destitute.

Great Confederacy Of Commonwealth States wrote:Name: Francisco de Trinidad y Tobago
Appearance:
(Image)
Current location: Mexico City

Group name: La Organización de los fieles y seguidores de Nieto el Santo (OFISEN)
What kind of organization are you?: Political Party, religious organisation
Who is in charge?: Fransisco de Trinidad y Tobago
Participating membership: 300
Current situation: The Organización controls the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City, along with the surrounding area. The organisation has been looking to expand, perhaps dragging in the other mayor ecclesial provinces along with them. The organisation is trying to attract membership from the more religiously-minded, especially in rural areas. They stand for a strong state wherein religion is a cornerstone, and where the Church has an important say in worldly matters as well via their interpretation of scripture.

Why would he be excommunicated, exactly? He stayed loyal to the Church, even in dire times. That would earn him a martyrdom, not an excommunication.

Yeah how would Brother Florent Nayal be excommunicated? He is not teaching false dogma so unless the Pope or a validly ordained bishop formally excommunicates him with a valid reason or he has done something that would earn excommunication by the action alone he wouldn't be excommunicated.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_de_la_Rochejaquelein He was also pretty young as well, three years younger.

He has also formed a militant partisan group which is calling for theocracy it is not a mtater of dogma, so much as reputation. The church would not want to be associated with rebels and revolution.

It's more of a half-baked ideology combining spreading St. Augustine's Rule to the lay people and implementing Rerum Novarum with a strong Church and State tie, generally something the Catholic Church supported.

Neither of these priests were excommunicated. I will concede that the Order of St. Augustine may remove his membership in the order but the Church overall wouldn't pay him that much attention.

He's a part of a Christian organisation fighting for protection of the faithful and more recognition of Christian teachings within the State. That is not an excommunicable offence.

They are also not really rebels. Well, rebels against a secular regime which the Church would've considered to be illegitimate anyway. The Church doesn't go about excommunicating rebels like it's 1507.
