Trump has shown himself to be far more volatile than any other president.
His entire personality depends on the appearance of being the strongman who can do bigly things. Refusing to give testimony when requested will obviously be spun by media as him running scared - if that story gets traction he will lash out against the committee giving more ammunition until he for sake of his ego relents.

Also while probably not entirely relevant but isn't it generally accepted convention for presidents to give testimony to committed when requested, even if they're not technically supposed to do it?

No, the thing is here that he was asked a direct yes or no question, and he hesitated and avoided the question.

That says more about King than it does about Cuomo, to be honest, if you refuse to answer a simple yes or no question.

If I ask you "do you think people like me are inferior?" I want a simple yes or no, I don't expect you to go "well, you know, you contribute to this country in a different way than I do". Let your yes be yes and your no be no. If you deal with questions the same way King does, maybe you should learn how to communicate better because avoidance is not answering the question. That's 7 year old "hurr durr I dunno" shit, not something a grown up motherfucker like King should be doing.

If you (general you) are asked a yes or no type of question, either answer it clearly or shut the fuck up or say "I can't answer that to you here". Whatever, but this whole avoidance of answering a simple question with a simple yes or no is grating, and it says more about the answerer than the questioner. I don't give a shit what you think about Cuomo's questioning, as that ship sailed the moment King decided to avoid the question. Would he have answered it on the spot with a simple yes or no, I'd be tearing into Cuomo, but I have no chance of it because Cuomo asked a question that went unanswered.

It's people like him that makes me dumb down the question on them going "is it a yes or is it a no" and I even force them to give me a straight answer by not letting the point go. It's either a yes, or a no. It doesn't take a fucking rocket scientist to answer a simple yes/no question. I can respect honesty in a man. I cannot respect a man who does something other people think is weird, or antithetical to their values and doesn't own it or at least give a clear, honest answer.

You can say that he should have answered in a different way, but there are hardly any grounds from this interview to claim he is racist, especially considering he said that he hoped in the future there would be so much interracial marriage that everyone would look the same.

If you have nothing useful to say, don't say anything at all, basically is how I think about it.

If King cannot stop being awkward in his wording, it is best if he takes a little time to think about what he wants to say before he says it before he gets in deep shit. But this entire awkwardness could be avoided if he could just learn how to communicate better if it is, as you say, lack of proper communication on his part.
