Beta Test wrote:Okay, so we're now onto the subject of history...Things we are looking for include issues such as the nation's former colonial rulers and other basic information that may need to be established before beginning.

The Admins have discussed this again and looked over the current debate, and we've decided to make a change in this process

We've decided, for the sake of cohesion, to allow short 4-6 sentence proposals that very briefly outline the history of the nation. These should include not only previous colonial rulers, but circumstances leading up to the beginning of the RP (for example civil war or independence). We have decided to do this in order to give people a clearer idea of the history and to prevent a confused historical outcome.

Nonetheless, the Admins reserve the right to rule out resolutions if they are deemed too specific. This also does mean that the previous historical resolutions that I posted earlier are probably out of order and we apologise for any confusion that this has caused.

All the naming resolutions that have been proposed are still in order and we continue to encourage you to not just propose them, but to debate them (historical context to them would be useful).

Some of you are anxious to begin, so are we, so here is a timeline of what the rest of the process will look like

The current debate will end at 1:00 AM GMT or, 8:00 PM EST (approximately 20 hours from the time of this post). That will be followed by a 36-hour vote, which will then be followed by 24 hours of debate on the name, then another 36-hour vote. After all that, at the latest we should have the game up in about 6-7 days from today.

Resolved: The islands are originally settled by Africans and Arabs, before they are ruled over by the Abbasids. Later, the Portuguese conquer the islands, before the islands are in turn conquered by the Dutch and the French. Germany takes the French colony after the Franco-Prussian War and France retakes the German territory after WWI. After WWII, Britain becomes the UN trustee over the islands and independence is declared. Later, there is a civil war, and an American-led coalition establishes a new, democratic government [this is where we start].

Resolved: Whatever is first settled by peoples similar to the Sentinelese who were fiercely independent and often murdered foreigners, attacking the Portuguese and Dutch who attempted to explore the islands. It wasn't until the arrival of the Marathis in the 1690's and the Arabs from the Sultanate of Muscat in the 1700's that the islanders began to come under serious threat, with the Arabs using the islands as a base for pearl fishing, as a trade hub and as a source of slaves. Following the Second Anglo-Maratha War, the islands became attached to the British Raj in India, finally gaining independence in 1948. A short period of unstable democratic rule followed independence, with a communist revolution occurring in May 1961. Communist rule largely ended in 1992 with a transition of power to the reasonably authoritarian Fstan People's Party, who gerrymandered their way to electoral victories until a widely unpopular President won reelection under dubious circumstances. In September 2016, the President was overthrown and assassinated by the military during a coup with a panel of five military generals overseeing a transition to democratic rule, having scheduled elections for February 2017.

Fstan was not united at first being ruled by different tribes on each island, but then the age of colonisation began and the Portuguese were the first to colonise it soon the Spanish and French followed. There were 2 wars on the islands both ending in a stalemate, the First between the Spanish and Portuguese and 2nd Between the Portuguese and Spanish. The Spanish soon left the Island pursuing other colonies. The Portuguese and French remained but in WW2 the Germans with the help of Japan conquered the French owned Fstan and in fear Portugese sold their land in Fstan to the Japanese.

After the loss of WW2, England got the island. But soon Independence followed after the English were found mistreating the Fstanis and monarchy was established with the First King Mujahanu I ruling over most of Fstan except the north. But the Peasants were unhappy with high taxes and poor living conditions, It was at this time US became an ally of then Kingdom Of Fstan, the Rebels garnered support from China and the civil war began, The Monarchists were winning at first but US had to leave the nation militarily due to protests and riots in their nation, soon the workers/peasants won and established a multi-party democracy and remained close friends with China. Then the 2nd Civil War occurred with Christian terrorists continuously burning down and destroying government property and killing people, the Christian Minority supported but the rest of the country did not soon a the 2nd Civil war began but was short lived and only lasted 3 months due to chinese support. It is 2017 and Fstan is going to be looking forward to another interesting year to add to their history books.

Resolved:
Australoid peoples have inhabited the islands for tens of thousands of years. The islands were recorded by both Arab and Indian civilizations by 1000 AD but were infrequently visited other than to occasionally gather slaves. The first Europeans to discover the islands were Portuguese, who established a trading fort on the southernmost island. During the Dutch-Portuguese War, the fort was seized by the Dutch. A Danish fort was established on the northernmost island, a stopping point before Danish Tranquebar in India. Throughout the 1700's the island was split primarily between the Dutch and Danish, some hostile natives were killed and land was cleared for plantations, which used primarily African slave labor. The Dutch colony was occupied by the British in 1809 and became a British colony in the 1814 Convention of London. The Danish colony was sold to the British in 1845 along with Tranquebar. Slavery was illegal so many workers were brought from India, and payed a pittance. The islands achieved Responsible Government in 1898, electing a parliament. Suffrage was restricted to whites. The islands contributed volunteers in both World Wars on the British side and ratified the Westminster Statute in 1938 to become independent.

During the 1960's a small-scale insurgency began among African and Indian inhabitants who were not able to vote. Support from the USSR, China and other communist countries for the insurgency escalated the conflict and shifted the goals of the insurgency towards establishing a communist state. Commonwealth forces, hot off of the Malayan Emergency intervened in the conflict but eventually pulled out due to riots at home claiming the forces were propping up a racist regime. In 1974 the insurgents took over and established a communist government. A military-led counter coup occurred in 1982, supported by the CIA. The resultant very reactionary strongman government ran the country into the ground and was brutally oppressive, leading to an open civil war which started in 1993 and continued to escalate as the archipelago balkanized into many different conflicting groups. The civil war effectively became a frozen conflict with little progress but many deaths. A ceasefire came into effect in 2005 but was not recognized by all fighting groups. A universal ceasefire was only established in 2014 with Indian-led UN intervention. Peace talks were held for more than two years before all parties agreed to come to the table in a constitutional convention.

EDIT: Not sure if this is too detailed for what people had in mind but I'll leave it up for now.

Sponsor, though I have to say I'm not sure about the Sentinelese. The size of this nation was decided to be (at most, even though the least amount is not that lower either) equivalent to a third of India's total area. It is only realistic that we're either going to get many different original inhabitants in case of an archipelago, or a single (and more tame) people, who may even have developed sophisticated civilization, in the case of a larger landmass.

With my support behind Atlantica's proposal, I'm inclined to suggest each sovereign over the islands had a different name for their territories.

Native: Nasrani
Assuming the Nestorians described in the demographics were some of the first people on the island, this is a name they might have used.

Arab: Fatima
First Arabic name that came to mind, I'm sure there are better ones.

Portuguese: Fernão
The Portuguese could have understandably discovered the islands around the time of Manuel I and named them after his son, Ferdinand.

Dutch: Vlissingen (Flushing)
Named for a major port used by the Dutch East India Company.

French: Fédération Indo-Arabe (French Indo-Arabia)
Similar naming convention as used for French Indo-China.

German: Fredrikshald
For Frederick William IV.

British: New Fenlands
After the old Fenlands.

I'm open to suggestions, but for now I think this resolution will do fine:

Resolved: The next incarnation shall have multiple names, including Nasrani, Fatima, Fernão, Vlissingen, French Indo-Arabia, Fredrikshald, New Fenlands, and potentially others, an official one to be selected ICly.

I would like to remind people that I said short, and 4-6 sentences. The Admins would hate to have to rule out proposals entirely, so it would be most ideal if people whose proposals are too long could shorten them (particularly Archism and Balochistan).

Resolved: The islands shall have been very sparsely populated pre-colonisation, with the Netherlands taking the islands as a convenient storage point in the 1500's on the way to transporting goods to Africa, Arabia and India. Dutch merchants settle in the dominion, which becomes a bustling trading post de to it's convenient location. Over the years, settlers from Arabia, India and Africa in search of a better life come and settle in the islands, leading to the multicultural foundation of the islands themselves. In the 1900's, an independence movement grows in the islands, which during WWII the Dutch government-in-exile gives into. A federal parliamentary republic is founded, and today the island enjoys a modestly high level of development and has an economy driven by tourism and shipping.

Resolved: The nation shall be called Zuid-Frisia, due to beinga former Dutch colony and it's composition of islands.

I know the second one begins with a Z, but the second barrel begins with an F so it still counts.

A Spanish settler population residing in the country’s Lusophone areas can be justified with relative ease, for the Union of Crowns allowed many Spaniards to establish themselves in Portuguese-held territories, and they were typically not uprooted upon the dissolution of the Union; in truth, only suspected Jews were investigated, as seen with the oft-cited post-Restoration interrogations in the Viceroyalty of New Spain. It would nevertheless be impossible for Spain to fight a fratricidal war in this portion of the orb; the Treaty of Tordesillas, I am afraid, would keep it from happening. Further, Portugal, perpetually bound to London by the misfortune of geography and history, would have never considered selling to the Japanese a position from which to strike India; neither Salazar’s pride nor the reality of the time would allow it.

Well, if I could tie in that this was the only part in southern Asia that France held onto after they fought Britain for control of India then there's a possibility that there would have been a British takeover of the territory during WW2 after the local colonial government declared its support for Vichy France. Then it's handed back until sometime in the 1950's or whatever and the rest of the history continues.

The Miaphysite Church of Coptic Archism wrote:A perfect history for the Fatherland . . .

I’m quite keen on this proposal, but the deadline approaches, and I do not wish for the admins to dismiss it on account of its sheer length and detail. Thus, I’ve added some touches of my own and produced an abridged edition of the original resolution, which, I hope, will not be discarded. If the admins opt in favour of accepting Archism’s resolution in its full length and without amendment, I would not take issue with my resolutions being withdrawn.

Resolved: The first Europeans to discover archipelago were the Portuguese, who established themselves in the southernmost regions of the archipelago, but the Dutch and Danes were soon to arrive, establishing a plantation economy that made provision for the use of East African slaves; replaced by British rule, these three colonies would all disappear before the end of the XIX century, but an invaluable Continental cultural inheritance would remain that would be particularly evident on the occasion of the first elections to Parliament in 1898, where suffrage was restricted to whites. In time, the archipelago’s men fought for King and Country in Flanders fields, and Indian workers arrived; indeed, dominion status was achieved in 1938, but all legal references to the Crown, as with South Africa in 1961, would disappear in 1974, when a decade or so of communist-sponsored, pro-universal suffrage insurgencies proclaimed a socialist republic. The First Republic would collapse in 1982 with a CIA-backed coup d’état that brought a strongman to power. A slow and bloody civil war erupted in 1994; a ceasefire in 2005 failed to secure a definitive peace settlement, and only after an Indian-led UN intervention in 2014 did the various parties agree to negotiate. The two years of negotiations have come to their end; elections have been called, and a Constitution is to be drafted to allow the country to heal.
