You're not listening to WTB, AM 1450 in Zwischen, for the simple reason that it's not broadcasting the game. Someone else is watching TV, so you follow along this pitch-by-pitch display thing online.

It's been a good week for baseball, you think. Well, other than Harry Kowallis' death, but...he was old. And the Zebras are doing well. This game had been close for a while; Mercer had hit a double to left to score Aleplow, yeah, but City of Norfolk had tied it right back up. It was maybe a little too close for comfort for the next few innings. But it's not about comfort, is it, all the time? Sometimes it's about being exciting.

Then, finally, right before the stretch, they took the lead. Meg Hietala had drawn a walk, and Aleplow and Ida Pratt had singled. Hietala scored, and the Zebras led once again. Took them long enough.

Although it is sort of quiet now, without the radio. You take out your mp3 player and put it on random play.

And there's his voice in your ears. Marshall Avilez. The voice of the Senators.

"Butendler steps to the plate," says Avilez. Said Avilez. You look down at your screen, though you don't need to; you know this one. Mustangs 6, Senators 2. Or, as Zwangzug remembers it, Kowallis' Hot Dog Game.

Well, actually, the real Hot Dog Game never happened. It would have been decades before. But the broadcast you hear again is the one people recorded, people played back.

Strange, really, that it's the random track that comes up. You have 238 of them and this just happens to be the one you were thinking of before.

Although...

This has happened before. At work, in the offseason, with nothing but the headphones in your ears alongside you for hours, you've somehow thought of the song that's coming before it comes. More than once.

And as you listen, reliving the half-inning that happened before you were born, Norona hits a batter, and a double ties up the game. Pratt reaches in the top of the ninth, but Mercer can't bring her home.

It's a little unfair, you think, that all people remember of Kowallis' career is that one game. He must have broadcast other games, right? Maybe not very exciting ones--it was the Senators, after all--but...something. You open up a new tab and start Goggling.

Walk. Single. Fielder's choice, Aleplow to Blitch, but still two on. The infield must be moving to do something about it, but all you see is the display on the screen. A sharp infield single, Mercer's got it, clutching at it, really doesn't want to overthrow this one. The runners hold.

Looks like Kowallis broadcast all of the National League. Well, that wasn't very long.

Strike, almost outside. Ball outside. Ball high. Swung on and missed. Ball. Fouled away. Ball. Bases loaded.

You wonder if Gordon Chane is throwing in the bullpen. Croes has been doing fine so far, but you did like Maren Ruud's no-closers approach. The screen doesn't say. Maybe there's a better source? New tab.

Swung on. Ball. Ball. Lifted into the left field stands, maybe three rows up.

Again with the stupid bullpen.

Page One. Directions for set designer: The scene opens on The Frosty Dome, New Cleethorpes (WS). Grey and republican blue colours abound, the crowd is filled with pathologically distrustful Icelanders, and despite the short lines the fence, which rises to over 18 feet in right field, makes the proportions heavily favour right handed hitters.

...

Some reviews.

The Things franchise is now 6 editions old, and it is frankly a little disappointing to see so many familiar faces absent. While much has been written about Momoko Koumura's absence, relatively little has been said about the disappearance of the franchise's former star - and the only one to receive international syndication - Masami Tamagotchi. Gone also are Django "Three Finger" Scheinhardt, Toebacca the Wookiee, Amanda Jónsdóttir, and Karen Auyeng. Several of the new characters - Sam "Speedy" Spade, Noodles Ptarmigan, and Ben Zimmerman - have much to do to establish themselves after their appearance in last summer's sequel, "Keisler Cup 2", aimed at a younger audience.

After the action packed Tarrentum scene, the section in Sibirsky proved a nice break from all the homeruns. The continuing absence of any "SB" effects has provoked controversy, though some suggest they are overused in other productions. Sakiko Wakabayashi continued to give a strong performance: her deep flyball was very moving (specifically, it moved a runner in on a sacrifice fly) and hitting two doubles showed a range that stymied critics who accused her of being a TTO hack. I had two big reservations: Anna Alaja really dropped the ball. Twice, in fact. And writing out Maija Peltosaari with a shoulder inflammation was a big disappointment, given how few female performers the Things franchise has had in pitching roles.

Despite the powerful opening, the New High Charity 24 scene ultimately dragged on far too long. I did admire the twist ending - I had never expected Ana Justina Jurkaš, seemingly a rather minor character, to be revealed as the game winner, but I guess just about all the leads had been killed off by that point anyway! But at least it wasn't the snoozefest that was the next section, in Bodegraven. It just got too predictable: another Sakiko sac fly? Another Sam Spade triple? Another nine pitch inning by Mazio? They also overdid it on the stolen bases: having four without anyone being caught lacks realism. Not a patch on the gritty character study that pitted Jarradin against Tamagotchi, is it.
The fight is long and tough, but together, we can make it. -- José Carlos Mariátegui

Two kinds of pork in one soup? Bring it on. -- Christina Hendricks

Scenes from a Tarrentian Locker Room

Home Manager's Office, Krozile State Ballpark, Krozuy, Krozile, Tarrentum

"Well Woodrio, it looks like you'll be out until at least the playoff stage." Falcons manager Tiberius Wavi told his injured starting Left Fielder from behind his desk.

"Yeah, I hear you skip." Woodrio said. He clutched his shoulder again as pain shot through his body.

"I want you to know that I still want you in the dugout during games. And not just here in Tarrentum." Wavi continued.

"No rest for the weary?"

"No rest? Woodrio, you'll be working with the team doctors and trainers. These are the best in Tarrentum. What else were you thinking for rest? We need you on the field again."

"Well, I was thinking of a hot tub with some 18 year old college girls might help me relax. And, And, you don't seem to be missing me with Richie in the lineup." Woodrio finished with a grin on his face.

Wavi looked at him and laughed. "I think you've been hanging around Erni too much."

Tape Room, Krozile State Ballpark

"Look, they just barely got that hit there!" Burtoni yelled out as he and a couple of his teammates caught up on footage from their first game against Bodegraven. "Little fuckers."

"Well, you shouldn't have been throwing a curveball high in the zone on a 1-1 pitch John." Pollani Dazzera chimed in. There was some mockery in his tone but she had a tablet with lots of notes on it in front of him as he was going to be starting against the upstart "Grave Diggers" - as TFSN had called them - and knew he couldn't lose to them.

"Well...well I though Favella had the right call so I just went with it." Burtoni retorted.

"Ahh don't be throwing me under the bus Johnny." Favella chimed in. "We had our gameplan and it was just a bad pitch and a just a weird hop. Plus it was more of an implosion by Timmy that caused it."

"Alright, you're right, it was just a fluke game." Burtoni apologized. "But Dizzy you have to be on your toes. Timmy and Luis are the best out there and for them to give up five runs like that, the Grave Diggers had some kind of tip off." His eyes narrowed and Burtoni started to talk in a whisper. "Maybe it was them crazy spies out in the stands?"

"Oh hell, not this again." Favella said shaking his head.

"They're out there! I see 'em when I'm playing for the Wildcats. They must use lights or something but they tip off my pitches."

"Antoni what is he talking about?" Dazzera asked. Burtoni continued to ramble to himself about 'hidden lights' and 'metaphysical radio broadcasts.'

"I had to deal with this during the All-Star game. Our boy Johnny loves to lapse into these 'Grand Conspiracy' claims about opposing teams."

"I just thought he was a bit eccentric. Now I find out that he's plumb loco!" Dazzera said with a laugh.

Main Locker Room, Krozile State Ballpark

"What the hell is that smell?" Xavier Gradoni called out as he walked to his locker from the showers after practice.

"It's my new fragrance Xav!" replied Erni Washini as he sprayed more of the cologne into the air.

"Whoa, whoa! That's enough - <cough>" Gradoni choked out.

"What's it called Wash?" Tristan Dolami asked as he put on his designer jeans.

"La Smell of Wash!" the first basemen replied, cracking up as he said it. "The kids will love it! Just imagine you're walking to your lady's house and you smell like you just went fifteen rounds with an Ursine..."

"I think Henry Qund knows something about that." Gradoni said, laughing.

"Well, what else are you going to do but bathe yourself in La Smell of Wash?"

"I'd rather dunk my testicles in a batch of vomit." Dolami said.

"Man, you fools have no class!"

QOXSports.com/WBC 16 Coverage

City of Norfolk 001 015 001 - 8
Qazox 003 022 000 - 7

Qazox' 4 game winning streak is over, and the umpires are to blame. The umpires, from Terrentum and QoD which just happen to the nations hosting the WBC playoffs; on at least 4 occasions made plays that despite video replays were incorrect, leading to 5 runs being taken off the board for Qazox, and putting 3 runs up for CoN.

The first controversial play came in the 4th with Qazox leading 3-1 after a 3-run HR by George Rabbinski in the 3rd gave Qazox the lead. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, Juanita Sanchez flied out to deep center, and Adele Grahame tagged up and scored. But the 3rd base umpire ruled that Grahame left early and was tagged out to end the inning. Replays showed that Grahame tagged up a full second after the catch and should have been allowed to score.

In the 5th, CoN scored on a sac-fly to cut the lead to 3-2. In the bottom of the 5th, Qazox had 2 more runs taken off the board, after a Grand Slam by Victoria Wright was ruled fan interference, scoring only 2 runs; though replays showed the ball was clearly 3 feet over the left field wall. The next two batters struck out to end the inning 5-2 Qazox, though it could and should have been more.

In the 6th, CoN got a break when their 2-out bases-clearing double to left, that replays showed was a good 8 inches foul, but was ruled fair. After that play, both manager David Dell and starting pitcher Brianna Hayes were ejected for arguing with the umpire. On the next pitch, a 2 run HR off of Chuck Glenallen made it 7-5 CoN.

In the bottom of the sixth, once again Qazox had runs taken off the board, when a 3-run HR by Jason Tyson was ruled a foul ball, though the ball hit the right-field foul pole. If it stood, Qazox would have had a 10-7 lead, but instead, Tyson flied out to right to end the inning.

CoN amanged to take the lead in the top of the 9th on back-to-back doubles off of Rene Coleman, and the CoN closer escaped a jam with runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out by getting pinch hitter Diane Riggles to ground into a game-ending double play.

Manager David Dell had this to say after the game about the controversial calls:
Why the F*** do we have replay if the f****** umpires can't get it right even with it. I hope the umpires from today's game don't ever umpire a game again. The umpires in this game were atrocious. A protest will be made, but you know the S***heads in the WBC offices aren't going to do S*** about it.

With pitcher John Morgan no longer on the Sarzonian roster, Portland Fishermen lefthander Chris Carlton got the phone call he never thought he'd get.

"Pack your bags," the caller said. "You're going to be pitching tonight in Woodstock."

"I've been traded?" Carlton asked. That wouldn't make sense, he thought. Even though Portland and Woodstock were in separate leagues, the fact they faced each other in several Sarzonia Series meant they were rivals. The idea that the Fishermen would risk weakening themselves to strengthen the Mountaineers was farcical.

"No, you're not getting traded," the caller said. "You're getting called up to the national team."

Carlton sat back, stunned. Sure, he'd pitched well since his call up to the majors. He went 10-6 with a 3.17 earned run average and he'd already negotiated a tough patch in which hitters adjusted to his breaking pitches and he developed a sinking fastball. He also learned to throw a hard curveball to go with his looping slow curve.

"Why am I being recalled?"

"John Morgan was kicked off the team," the caller said. "This time for good. You're taking his spot in the rotation."

A few hours later, a surprised Carlton found himself on the mound getting ready to face Voltronica. He went from being in a pennant race to pitching for his national team. He could not have been more nervous. And this is a guy who's pitched in Sarzonia Series.

He threw his first pitch. Cather Mario Salvidotti had to leap up to catch his 97 mile-per-hour fastball.

"Ball," said the Yaforite home plate umpire, who had managed to duck out of the way of the high heat. Salvidotti motioned "down" with his glove thrice before throwing the ball back to Carlton. He took a deep breath and exhaled.

At least the first pitch is out of the way he thought. He ended up loading the bases with one out and pitching coach Ken Sutcliffe came out to chat with him.

"Relax," he said. "You're rushing your mechanics."

He would end up getting a double play to retire the side. He conceded a run in the top of the second, but after he blooped a single to right to score Salvidotti, he settled down from there. He pitched seven strong innings, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out six and got the win as Sarzonia improved to 5-2 overall. It would be their third consecutive win and it got the team into first place all alone in the BergBucks Group.

As Carlton wrapped up his interview with the reporter on the field, shortstop Chris Spontanelli sneaked up behind him and greeted him with a shaving creme pie in the face.

"What a welcome," the reporter laughed. "Back to you in the studio."

Although the people of Cotdelapoms were generally overjoyed at their u-21 baseball team's unlikely run to 2nd place at the Wadomia Invitational, they have been less enthusiastic by their performance at WBC16, where they are being exposed as not a particularly strong baseball nation. Which is fair, as we are not a particularly strong baseball nation. Baseball continues to lag behind football, ice hockey, rugby union and curling in popularity, and there is concern that it is becoming overexposed in an effort to push the sport on people. We have an IBL team, an entire minor league of the IBL, and now the stars of the WBC team are being used to sell a brand new 8 team short season baseball league made up of Cotdelapomais stars, since the Polaire League, the IBL minor league, features few local players.

Cotdelapoms recently got only their second victory of the WBC, against old rival Western Cuba, the nation that famously beat us in the Wadomia Invitational final. This match got the best ratings of any so far for the WBC on Cotdelapomais TV, but it is unlikely to be duplicated unless we go further, and we are unlikely to go further with our old-fashioned speed and defence game. We seriously need to develop pitchers who can throw as hard as everyone else and hitters who can hit home runs!

You have this little anklet thing in the colors of the professional team you root for. People can't see it when you wear long pants, but it stays on at night even when you're asleep, and it does its job.

When Churchma scores in the first inning, Hank Tyler singling in Randy Gomez, you groan. And part of you is like, oh, better go put that anklet on. And part of you is like, no, it's the Zebras.

You don't know too many fans of other national teams, other than recognizing a couple bloggers' names. Although, it's not like people can really tell which LAZY team you root for, unless you're wearing t-shirts...actually that happens a lot come to think of it, but the point is the anklet is good for helping you root. Us against them. Your city versus the other cities. But the national team, that's sort of weird...you root for the Zebras, yeah, but...an anklet wouldn't help, you decide. Not that way. Better to just watch, and root.

And it works! They get to Brickwell early, with Mercer lining a double to bring in Aleplow and Keigenbey driving him in. Turner leads off the fourth with a walk, and Blitch laces a single to right. Cordemoy strikes out looking, but Aleplow walks and Pratt delivers a double to clear the bases. Brickwell gets out of it, but a two-out rally in the sixth tacks on another run for the Zebras, Mercer getting the RBI again.

But it's Gomez again, reaching to start the eighth. Tyler pops out to Aleplow, but Linehan hits a ground-rule double. Lucky break for the Zebras, you can't actually bring yourself to think; Uda singles and Keigenbey makes a worried cutoff as Gomez streaks in.

Still, they win.

KrozileBaseballUnderground.ast

Though we are already half-way through the World Baseball Classic I'm sure that everyone missed my in-depth statistical analysis. No? Ahhh well, I know that I missed it. The Falcons have been on a winning streak lately winning their last four games. And really, it's been quite a good time to watch some good baseball. Upsets are aplenty this tournament and Tarrentum was on the receiving and giving end of upsets. They dropped their first game to Bodegraven and then had a win against Delaclava in Game 4.

How are our players stacking up though? Are they hitting enough? Obviously, because we are winning. But are they making good offensive plays?

I want to introduce you to a little stat called weighted On Base Average (wOBA). wOBA seeks to take to very useful stats, On-Base Percentage (OBP) and Slugging Percentage (SLG) and to reconcile them evenly. As it stands, OBP tells you that a batter reached base but doesn't tell you how far they reached base (did they get a double, triple or home run?), only that they eventually made it to a base. SLG, meanwhile, is a statistic of a hitters power as represented by showing how many bases a batter gain for themselves during an At Bat, it does not, however, take into account Walks (BB), stripping them away as if they didn't happen. In order to reconcile this, baseball statisticians created the weighted On Base Average. This statistic weights base-reaching events proportionally so that everything comes out correct. It is a method to see if a batter reaches base often and how far they go when they reach that base (frequency and power).

wOBA = (.72 x BB) + (.75 x HBP) + (.90 X 1B) + (.92 x Error [Reached Base]) + (1.24 x 2B) + (1.56 x 3B) + (1.95 x HR) / Plate Appearances ((AB + BB + SF + SH) - IBB)

The multipliers are based on Run Expectancy of each base-reaching event x 15% for weighting purposes. wOBA was introduced in The Book: Playing the Percentages in Baseball

The weighted On Base Average for Tarrentian hitters is as follows (and shown with OPS - On Base Percentage plus Slugging):
*Has not reached 3.1 PA/G
Name (Position)ABHBBAVGIBBHR1B2B3BSFSHOBPSLGwOBAOPS
Ferdini Zappataro (SS)34200.58801122500.5881.029.6771.618
Gina Torretta (CF)33102.3030017200.343.455.348.797
Erni Washini (1B)32150.46901122010.455.625.4621.080
Antoni Favella (C)33110.3330173000.333.515.363.848
Dessea Vallena-Favella (2B)29171.5862476100.6001.310.8511.910
Joe Thomas (LF)28122.42900112000.467.536.4611.002
Xavier Gradoni (3B)2972.2410061000.290.276.261.566
Woodrio Tucia (RF)2072.3500061000.409.400367.809
Rich Rasmussen (RF)*852.6250122000.7001.250.7671.950

From the table we see that OBP and wOBA are similar. But that is to be expected because wOBA is weighted, based on RE, for total bases reached while including the base "value" that is found in Slugging (which OBP lacks) - thus a better representation of a player's ability to reach base and how far that player will go when they get on base. Confusing? It's just a fun stat that gives us a better overall picture of a players ability. For reference, an average hitter would have a wOBA around .340, a great hitter has a wOBA of .400+ and a very poor hitter is anything below .300 for their wOBA.

Don't you just love numbers? Only when it relates to baseball, right?

But really we have to remember (and think of this in the big picture to) that this is an incredibly small sample. The randomization (ie, that these numbers are flukes) is really high (around .105+/-) becuse of the low number of At Bats. A much better picture of Tarrentian hitters would be to look back at the end of the group stage and playoffs (God willing) so that we would have more stats to compile.

We could go on and on...and we will. Let's switch gears to Defensive Efficiency. This is a measure of a team's rate at turning balls in play (all hits but a home run and runs scored on errors) into outs.

As it stands the Def Eff for the Falcons is .651, which means that 65.1% of the balls put into play against the Falcons are converted to outs. This is a low Def Eff and Wavi and the Falcons should be ashamed! Not even really bad teams have a Def Eff that low. Well, it's something to approve on, as always, in this tournament.

Next entry we'll take a look at the entire WBC field's Run Differential per Game and how it relates to their Overall Record (will there be a conspiracy in the outcome?????) Also, to any of the other national team bloggers out there, if you want the Judge to take a look and breakdown your team's stats, let me know. If your team hasn't been keeping detailed stats, though, it will seriously hamper my ability to provide you with the bigger picture.

Tonight's game is the first return fixture. For having the best record at the halfway stage, Newmanistan's Rockets have won a special prize basket, containing:
- some breath mints
- a book of sexually explicit sudoku puzzles
- a DVD of the 1980s Quodite pulp horror remake of the Hitchcock classic, Dial Z for Zombies
- hipster T-shirts ironically honouring the memory of Pluto as a planet
- apple crumble flavoured vodka.

RP cutoff for MD8.

CAPITAL CITY GAZETTE
The Three Rivers' news leader
Jays win big, may lose hitter

ST. CATHERINE - The Blue Jays won big last night, crushing Gracelona 11-1, helping their push for the knockout round. Glenn Carillo went the distance, allowing one run on three hits. Gracelona (3-5) notched their lone run on a long blast to right, over the heads of the coaster riders. Then, it was Lycrabon, all night, all the time. They notched two in the fifth on back-to-back home runs by Frank Thompson and Jonathan Short. In the sixth, the Blue Jays sent fourteen batters to the plate as they effectively ended it with nine runs scored, highlighted by Thompson's second homer of the night. The second of his home runs, in the sixth, was a grand slam that also scored Cliff Mayo, Jeremy Kramer, and Carl Maynard. The ugliness then ensued with Thompson's next at-bat in the seventh, as he was plunked in the head and remained there as the Blue Jay bench emptied, follwed by the Gracelona bench, as the brawl lasted a full twenty minutes. The end result was three Gracelona players (the pitcher, and two bench players) and their manager tossed, Maynard, Price, Short, manager Arthur Stone tossed for Lycrabon (5-3), and (C) taken off on a stretcher with a possible concussion. The rest of the game was just as tense with brushbacks, spikes up slides and an ending of a clothesline from Carillo on the final batter, causing another brawl.

In other Yuppers FoodBrands games, the group-leading Dagans (7-1) shut out Conservants (2-6) 4-0, Milchama (4-4) kept pace with the Jays, defeating Bergnovinaia (3-5) 5-2, and Teinohikira (4-4) edged Cosumar (4-4) 3-2 via a walk-off play to pull themselves into the playoff mix. Tomorrow's game will have the Blue Jays traveling to Bergnovinaia, whom Carillo defeated 9-5 in their first meeting.

The Zebras lead off with a hit, it's a Janet Aleplow single to left field. Pratt grounds into a fielder's choice, Mercer strikes out looking, but Keigenbey crushes one to the warning track and Aleplow comes in.

Navarrone goes down 1-2-3 and Cieger gets the cleanup hitter to lead off the second. Then they get a hit. It's the kind of thing you notice. But the Zebras get out of it.

Mercer and Throop double in the third inning to give Zwangzug another run.

Whoever's playing third for the visitors reaches base in the fourth inning. The center fielder strokes a nice hit, and the shortstop drives in their first one. Actually, now that you think about it, Matthew Cieger's doing a good job all things considered. Anyway, it's just the one run.

It's sort of hard to keep reading the whole thing. Aleplow gets a hit in the fourth. Pratt walks, Keigenbey gets the RBI. Although when you listen to the radio, sometimes you sort of tune it out if you're doing other stuff. This at least you have to read. It sort of keeps you focused. Turner hits a solo home run in the sixth. It's getting late. When the game is over you're going to get ice cream. That'll be good.

Cieger strikes out one batter to start the seventh. The next sends a double down the left field line, just fair. The next, first pitch, single, Keigenbey can't get to it and it's 4-2. Another batter, driven down the right field line...foul.

No, you don't want ice cream, you're not excited for it, you're not, that'll mean you don't want the game to be over. And you want the Zebras to win obviously you don't want them to stretch it out but it's baseball and it's your favorite and you don't want to do anything else but follow the game (because what kind of fan are you?) except it's the national team and that's bad, because--

Cieger gets a strikeout looking. The next batter pops, foul, Turner settles under it, makes the catch. It is the stretch. You stand.

Churchma 000 001 001 - 2
Qazox 001 101 00X - 3

Qazox' manager David Dell was suspended for 2 games due to his post-game comments following the City of Norfolk game on Monday. Pitching Coach, Jenny Decker, will be the acting manager until Dell's return.

As for today's game, Qazox got back on track after the controversial game vs. CoN defeating Churchma 3-2 and improving to 5-3 in the tourney. Charles Waskica held the Rockets hitless for the first 5 innings until Jordan Lubinsky's lead-off double in the 6th broke that up. Lubinsky would score on Jim Karney's 2-out single to left, cutting Qazox' lead to 2-1. Qazox didn't score until the 3rd when Waskica blooped a single to right, scoring Adele Grahame; who lead off with a double to center. Int he 4th, Jason Tyson scored on Chad Savoy's single to left, making it 2-0.

In the 6th, Qazox got the run back on a Dyana Garski HR to left; making 3-1. In the 9th, Waskica was still in teh game, having allowed only 3 hits to that point, when Alberto Linehan lead of by nailing a 411 ft HR to dead center. Ryan Batiste trotted in from the bullpen, and after allowing a single by Byron Uda, retired the side to pick up his 5th save of the tourney. Qazox now travels to Zwangzug to take on the Zebras in a crucial game.

Suspensions handed down for Gracelona brawls

ST. CATHERINE - The Eastern Baseball League Commissioners have handed down their decisions in relation to the two brawls in the Lycrabon-Gracelona game last night. Manager Arthur Stone will be suspended for the Blue Jays’ games at Bergnovinaia and Cassadaigua. Carl Maynard, Chad Price, and Jonathan Short will all be suspended for those two games as well as the Milchama game. Pitcher Glenn Carillo, who started the brawl as the game ended, will be pulled from his next scheduled start (which would have been the rematch with Conservants), as well as at least one scheduled start in the playoffs. The playoff start assumes that the Blue Jays qualify.

“The suspensions to the manager and Mr. Maynard, Mr. Price and Mr. Short were based on backing up their teammate. In Mr. Stone’s case, it was the fundamental rule of baseball, so that’s why he only got two. Glenn Carrillo’s suspension was based off of head-hunting in the worst possible way. That conduct, if it had occurred with any of the EBL franchises, would have resulted in a season-long suspension. That, of course, assumes that that person wasn’t flat out banned from the league.”

Stone was quoted as saying, “I accept the suspension. Not happy about it, but not much I can do either. Those (expletive) (expletive) from Gracelona are probably rightly expecting the next time we face them to get some back. At the risk of getting suspended again, I’ll have whoever pitchjes that game throw at the head of their first guy up. I’ll make sure their (expletive) guy doesn’t (expletive) come back to whatever competition we face them in. That plunking, and Jon’s (Jonathan Short), too….. That was (expletive).”

For Short, Bryce George will replace him, a right handed southpaw. Replacing Price will be right-hander Scott Green, and replacing Maynard will be righty Sam Daniels. Wally Newton will act as player-coach during Stone’s absence, and it is undetermined as yet if Carrillo will be sent home or not.

The remaining pitching rotation for group play and the first playoff series is as follows:
Thursday, August 26: at Bergnovinaia (20 Zachary Francis)
Friday, August 27: Cassadaigua (19 Tyrone Conley)
Saturday, August 28: at Milchama (18 Tom Benson)
Monday, August 30: Conservants (21 Bruce Barrett)
Tuesday, August 31: Teinohikira (20 Zachary Francis)
Wednesday, September 1: at Cosumar (19 Tyrone Conley)
Playoff game 1: Tom Benson
Playoff game 2: Glenn Carrillo (if suspension is lifted) or Bruce Barrett

WIN:
Tommy Thunder (1-1)
HRs:
Kevin Monroe 1(3), Johnny Stryker 1 (3)

In front of the hometown crowd again, Tommy Thunder redeemed him self for his opening day loss. Despite striking out the side in the first inning, he ran into trouble in the second and third giving up two runs on two hits and a walk, and a homerun an inning later. The Nordics offense came roaring back in the third however as Johnny Stryker bashed a two run homerun to pull the Nordics with in one. The next inning featured a two run double by Kathrin Jordan to pull the Nordics ahead. And in the 6th, Kevin Monroe added a two run blast of his own to pad the lead further. Thunder worked eight strong innings with seven strikeouts and three walks.

WIN:
Alexandria Dassow (2-0)
HRs:
Dmitri Rykov 2 (3)

The Nordics fortified their position at the top of the group when Alexandria Dassow tossed a complete with ten strikeouts and one walks, giving up one run on three hits. The pitching to this point has been...mediocre for the Nordics, but Dassow's impressive outing sparked some hope the rotation will return to form in the coming games. The star for this game offensively was Dmitry Rykov who went 3-4 with two solo homeruns!

Brian Edwards is not one to court controversy. The Sarzonian righthander has pitched on every edition of the World Baseball Classic and had settled into his role as the fourth starter behind ace Brad Baxter, lightning rod John Morgan and crafty lefthander Charlie Palmer. The same fivesome started every World Baseball Classic since Sarzonia's first.

Now, fifth starter Ken Sutcliffe retired and became the pitching coach due to Jim Wiesen abruptly quitting when Morgan was brought back for the 16th World Baseball Classic after he punched catcher Fred Carlton during a match in the previous World Baseball Classic. That brought in Josh Campbell from the Cyanea Series champion Woodstock Mountaineers to serve as the fifth starter.

Meanwhile, Morgan's second stint with the team ended just six pitches after it began when he was ejected for beaning Brian Schuster of Secristan following the latter's incendiary comments guaranteeing a sweep of the Stars and saying he had no respect for the team. Manager Khalil Dennis kicked Morgan off the team once and for all.

Now, Edwards is set to face the Millionaires at Fleetwood Park with questions swirling about the controversy. He said he would simply approach the match as the Stars facing the next highest ranked side.

"I don't pay attention to that guff," he said. "Secristan's an outstanding side, and that's going to be my focus, trying to get all their guys out. One guy is not going to be a distraction."

Perhaps not for the team, but with a sold out crowd expected in Fleetwood Park, it may serve as one for the fans, the overwhelming majority of which will be Stars supporters. Stadium officials reported that very few online buyers had Secristani ISPs, and that most of the telephone calls were domestic.

Still, that doesn't prevent hundreds of Secristanis from trying to bribe tickets off the hands of Stars supporters. Speaking of bribes, we have it on good authority that several Sarzonian newspapers have agreed in principle to a "rather generous" donation from the city councils of several Secristani cities to allow them to stand alone in datelines in Sarzonian newspapers. On that particular issue, Edwards is not afraid to get into the potential controversy.

"It's ridiculous," he said. "Journalists are supposed to be all about ethics and not being bought by corporate interests or governments. If this rumour turns out to be true, it will be extremely damning for all Sarzonian newspapers."

David Bancroft, the publisher of The Portland Press-Herald adamantly denied accounts that his newspaper was among those who agreed to the donation, but a spokeswoman for The Portsmouth Journal-Clarion said it agreed to a deal with Lakeland and other cities.

"We're in the red," she said. "It was either this or announce layoffs and reduce the size of the paper. In the end, we need to survive."

The source behind the rumours reported that The Woodstock Daily Mail was not among the newspapers seeking the funds. They recently announced that Amherst would stand alone in datelines, but added that neither the city nor the Secristani federal government had anything to do with the decision.

"Amherst is an important enough city to merit standing alone in datelines," said G. Everett Crowley, the deputy managing editor for newsroom operations at The Woodstock Daily Mail. "It's Secristan's capital and it has played an important role in the sporting and political spheres for a while now."

Poor Start Blamed on Lack of Interest

Milchama has stopped caring about international sports. Or at least it seemingly has. Nobody knows who is on the international football team anymore and the baseball team hasn't even bothered to get a roster out, despite people feeling that the team should still be the best in the world. It's weird ya know. Anyway yeah here's the roster:

Starters:
C: Henry Thomas (Chi Cubs)
1b: Martin LaPlante (Alexandria Comets)
2b: Forest O'Kelt (New Babylon Pirates)
SS: Dani Eltanor (Tel Morlin Echoes)
3b: James Merter (Port James Raiders)
LF: Itay Hafava (Chi Sox)
CF: Kelsey Evers (Chi Cubs)
RF: Rudyard Davies (Wickert Witches)
DH (if necessary): Ben Aminton (New Sparta Greeks)

Bench:
OF: Riley Hevett (Wickert Wanderers)
OF (when not DHing): Ben Aminton (New Sparta Greeks)
C: Kim Pardew (Alexandria Kings)
IF: Ken Di'are (New Babylon Pirates)
IF: Marlow Hashmet (Kreitsburg Killers)
Util:Ufalay Kokoiam (Mongolt Hordes)
Util: Chester Ofalay (Port James Hitmen)

Pitchers:
SP:Mickey Hermeton (Kreitsburg Killers)- The ace led an undermanned Kreitsburg to the verge of the pennant. His miniscule 1.21 ERA was the best in 23 years in the MBL.
SP: Ezra Foster (Chi Cubs)- The grandson of Phil Foster finally gets to play internationally. Was Rookie of the Year his first year in the league and an even better second season gets him onto the roster as the second starter.
SP: Kevin Waldon (Edo Samurai)- The only good player the atrocious Samurai possess, Waldon has a wicked fastball and an even better curve. His getting on the national team is an accomplishment in itself.
SP: Kit Fenner (Tel Morlin Echoes)- The junkball specialist. Fenner has a subpar fastball but makes up for it by having the largest arsenal of crazy breaking pitches this side of Henson Callahan.

Relivers:
Closer: Eric Fiori (Kreitsburg Killers)- Kreitsburg relied on a strong bullpen to get to second place in the DL and Fiori was a major reason. His miniscule .50 WHIP made him a force to be reckoned with.
Set up man 1: Kent Fernal (Alexandria Comets)- The Comets finally got themselves a closer last year after fleecing Milchama City for this talented youngster who helped them to their first top division finish in 8 years.
Set up man 2: Yossi Kevern (New Babylon Pirates)- In every situation where manager Morey needs a few outs he always seems to turn to Kevern to get those clutch outs. So he brings him along for the national team.
Middle Reliever: Jenny Seaver (Wickert Wanderers) - The other women of the team (Which by the way is a record for Milchamian national teams). Seaver was not a hard throwing pitcher but her crazy knuckle and screw balls more than make up for a subpar fastball.
Long Reliever: Marcos Olian (Milchama City Trolleys)- Actually a starter for the Trolleys, Olian's flexibility and incredible stuff make him a perfect candidate for a reliever.

Lineup (w/o DH or regular):
1. Forest O'Kelt - The best OBP man on the team which makes him the perfect candidate for the leadoff position. He's also a heck of a defensive second basemen.
2. Kelsey Evers- While she doesn't have that much power her bat control, eye, speed and overall approach to hitting makes her a wonderful hitter in the number 2 spot.
3. Martin LaPlante- Returning the Comets to respectability was no easy task but LaPlante started the movement and one reason was his 54 home runs, some of which he's hoping to replicate in this WBC.
4. Itay Hafava - A three true outcomes hitter. While he does play a really good left field, which is rare for a TTO, if he hits one watchout!
5. James Merter- Considered to be among the best all around players in Milchamian history. His arguing was one of the reasons that the MBL allowed its players to go international again. He's hoping to cement his reputation as one of the best of all time by performing in international play.
6. Rudyard Davies - A line drive hitter with power. Davies will occasionally hit a home run but is an excellent doubles hitter always putting it in the gap. He's also known for a cannon of an arm in right field.
7. Dani Eltanor- He's actually the leadoff hitter for his club. His plate discipline and speed make him a weird candidate to be ahead of Thomas but we trust Morey, he seems to know what he's doing.
8. Henry Thomas- One of the best hitting catchers in MBL history, is only batting 8th because his power does not match up with the middle of the order. However, his position is in no way a reflection of his talent.
9. Pitcher

Lineup (w/DH):
1. Forest O'Kelt
2. Kelsey Evers
3. Martin LaPlante
4. Itay Hafava
5. James Merter
6. Ben Aminton
7. Rudyard Davies
8. Henry Thomas
9. Dani Eltanor

Scenes from a Tarrentian Locker Room

"...oh yeah, like that'll work!"

"Well, I never said it was the best training apparatus in the world." Xavier Gradoni shot back.

Erni Washini looked over the training aid that Gradoni was showing him. The aid was a prototype that Gradoni would be sponsoring shortly. "But look here Xav, how in the world are you supposed to use this damn thing? I mean, sure, you can throw with it on but how is this supposed to work?"

Gradoni put the aid on his arm. "Okay so you slip the front end on like...like - this. Wow, that's tight-"

"That's what she said." Washini interjected.

"...And then when you throw the ball, if you don't make the correct arm motion," Gradoni went through the motion of a poor, sidearmed throw, "Ahh! Jesus that hurts."

"Oh yeah, parents will love to get this for their kids!" Washini said, laughing.

"Is some one smoking in here?" Gina Torretta asked as she began to get ready after her shower.

Rich Rasmussen was busy getting his own clothes in order. "Nah it's Burtoni he's got these odd...Gina! What the hell are you doing in our locker room!?"

"There's only one here at the Grantanata's stadium." Gina answered nonchalantly.

"Yeah, but..." Rasmussen looked around and found no help. "Wait. Were you taking a shower in there with the rest of us?"

"That's what they have shower stalls for Rich." Gina said, unwrapping her towel.

"Oh good God!" Rasmussen exclaimed, turning away. "Just tell me when you are decent Torretta."

"...Decent."

Rasmussen turned around to see Torretta in the nude. He blushed as he turned away again.

"Got ya." Torretta said, laughing as his other teammates started to crack up from where they were watching in the shower area. "You rookies are always so bashful," she said, wrapping herself again in a towel.

Tape Room, Grantanata Stadium

"Good form Liona." Fironte Sareb, the Falcons 18-year old wunderkid pitcher said.

"Why thank you Fironte." Marrada answered with a mock bow. "Now their left fielder loves to foul off pitches just to piss you off. Best thing to do is to go right at him with fastballs inside."

"Alright." Sareb jotted a few notes on the pad in front of him. "Seems they like to let the first pitch go by."

"You know..." Marrada thought for a bit. "You're right, they didn't swing at any of my first pitches."

"Strikeouts will be aplenty Sareb." Antoni Favella said in the seat next to him.

"Maybe I could set a team record?" Sareb answered more to himself then to anyone in particular.

The door creaked open and the three all turned around to see a half-naked Rich Rasmussen with a towel on.

"Can we help you Rich?" Favella asked.

"Torretta's trying to flash me every chance she gets!" Rasmussen blurted out.

The pitchers and catcher cracked up laughing. "Rookies," they all said at the same time.
