Let's be real here, can we just remove a particular DoS player from the Biggest Meltdown category? I haven't counted the votes, but that one is definitely up there on the list and I'll be damned if it wins.

Yeah, next thing you know they will try to get on the site to post about it. I think it should be removed also.

Why someone would WANT that award is beyond me. I sure as hell don't want to win it. You'd think these awards would be to congratulate people, not be like "oh hahaha, you screwed up really bad".

And the results are out! The turnout was really fantastic -- we had nearly three times the number of tickets we received last year. The voting distribution was also interesting to see. Perhaps we'll get a couple upgrades next year with visuals and the whole shebang.

Congratulations to all the winners and we hope 2017 brings another exciting year in R/D gameplay!

Most Influential Gameplayer: Despite strong showings by raider Yuno and reigning champion in this category Cormac, the award for "Most Influential Gameplayer" goes to... Brunhilde!
In October, Brunhilde organized the Coalition Against the Ideology of Nazism, an inter-regional organization that united regions across NationStates, even those that have long shared mutual hostility and squabbles, against "a hate that should not go unopposed." Despite the success of invasion on The NSIA, with over eighty updaters showing up, the CAIN has gradually devolved into the very things it sought to cover up in uniting against Nazism -- factional differences and personal antagonism -- with many of its leaders expressing dismay and disillusionment over the organization. While it's future may be uncertain, it certainly does not bring the shining spotlight of gameplay away from Brunhilde.

Best Raider: A fierce battle between Ever-Wandering Souls, Yuno, and T E Lawrence (Knot) ensued in this race, as the other candidates quickly fell behind. A strong start by Ever-Wandering Souls suddenly gave way to Yuno and T E Lawrence (Knot) after two days, and these two fought all the way until the finish line. The winner of the category "Best Raider" is... T E Lawrence (Knot)!
In the past year, T E Lawrence, also known as Knot, served as a general of DEN and currently commands The Invaders. Being the leader of the largest invader organizations over the course of 2016 has raised last year's "Best Up-and-Coming Raider" to a new throne, and he continues to play a significant role in R/D gameplay.

Best Defender: Last year's "Best Defender" Benevolent Thomas held off a noteworthy challenge by Roavin, a new face of defending, while the rest of the candidates could not match. The winner of the category "Best Defender" is... Benevolent Thomas!
From leading A World Power's Regional Defense Force to glory and restarting The Grey Wardens as the premier defender organization to serving as delegate of Lazarus, the popular defender commander has been everywhere. Despite his retirement towards the end of 2016, the efforts of Benevolent Thomas can be seen in every facet of defending even today.

Best Up-and-Coming Raider: Just like in its mother category, three candidates (Tom Vasentius, Sygian, and Yuno) quickly rose above all the others. A race between Tom Vasentius and Sygian went right to the end, but only one came out on top. The award for the category "Best Up-and-Coming Raider" goes to... Tom Vasentius!
Tom Vasentius spent the majority of 2016 involved in DEN and subsequently, in Hydra Command as its leader. He now currently serves in The Black Hawks and remains as a new, but solid, face of raiding.

Best Up-and-Coming Defender: We have a slightly more legitimate contest this year for this category -- no raiders nominated! In a blow-out victory against other highly qualified individuals, the winner of "Best Up-and-Coming Defender" is... Roavin!
Roavin made his appearance onto the NationStates R/D gameplay scene as a member of the South Pacific Special Forces and quickly rose to become the leader of The Grey Wardens. His gung-ho leadership attitude makes him one of defending's greatest assets.

Best Invader Organization: Two of the largest raiding organizations, The Black Hawks (last year's winner in this category) and The Invaders, were beaten to the crown this year by a dark horse. No, it wasn't Hydra Command. No, it wasn't Firehelm. The award for "Best Invader Organization" goes to... Lone Wolves United!
Lone Wolves United was suddenly spurred into activity when its original founder, Scardino, returned to NationStates. Following the retirements of Il-Khans Anerastreia and Abenthy, Scardino has been assisted by Il-Khans Dream Killers and Elysium Station and newcomer Sister Snow in frequent raids summed with deliberate antagonism against TITO. It is very possible that defenders combat Lone Wolves United most often, as their small raids consist of skilled leaders but not very many footsoldiers.

Best Defender Organization: Despite a small challenge from The South Pacific Special Forces, the golden award for "Best Defender Organization" goes wholly to... The Grey Wardens!
The controversial beginnings of The Grey Wardens in 2015 were lessened with its restart this year. This infamous defending organization takes the battle right into raider homes, as they do not shy away from raiding whenever possible. Under the charismatic leadership of Benevolent Thomas and Roavin, The Grey Wardens continue to shine brightly.

Invasion of the Year: Although the significance is apparent in all nominated raids, the breadth of organization behind-the-scenes involved in the top invasion is incontestable. The award for "Invasion of the Year" goes to... The NSIA!
Last year's Invasion of the Year was topped in numbers by the invasion of The NSIA, organized by the Coalition Against the Ideology of Nazism. Under the leadership of Brunhilde, Caelapes, Funkadelia, Knot, Olevsky, and other notable individuals in the R/D gameplay sphere, over eighty updaters and nearly twenty distinct regions and organizations participated in the original invasion, which further culminated into the second largest occupation seen in the history of NationStates.

Liberation of the Year: While the liberations of this year were not as large-scale as those of last year, which included Lazarus, they are nonetheless significant The winner of the award "Liberation of the Year" goes to... Singapore!
Nearly forty defenders and eleven regions participated in the liberation of Singapore from Hydra Command over the summer, with The Grey Wardens taking the lead. Victory was attained by the narrowest of margins (one endorsement), less than twenty-four hours after the invasion occurred.

Gameplay Thread of the Year: A race between the CAIN and The Invaders commenced, but only one came out on top. The winner of "Gameplay Thread of the Year" is... CAIN!
The Coalition Against the Ideology of Nazism has been a hot topic in the latter half of 2016. With some praising its commitment to fight the ideology of Nazism and others condemning the organization for its interference in regional sovereignty, there are still people who remain skeptical on its overreaching behavior and political bureaucracy. The organization has spawned numerous Security Council proposals and its future, as stated before, remains uncertain.

Best Gameplay Newspaper: While all publications nominated are renowned for their quality reporting and editing, the winner of "Best Gameplay Newspaper" is... The Miniluv Messenger!
Under the direction of Cormac, The Miniluv Messenger has been a staple publication in the gameplay sphere for the past many years. One significant aspect about this gameplay newspaper is that it is not afraid to touch controversial topics; in fact, The Miniluv Messenger seeks out these topics and releases accurate information about them.

Biggest Meltdown of the Year: The unequivocal winner of "Biggest Meltdown of the Year" is... DoS Players!
For being individuals that are no longer welcomed on NationStates, DoS players play a disproportionately large role in determining gameplay decisions. While some may have disappeared well into the depths of the real world and a select few remain helpful in offsite forums, there are others that continue to beleaguer NationStates, motivated only by their desire to seek attention.

Quote of the Year: "Don't shitpost." (Sedgistan)
Enough said.

Noteworthy Event of the Year: Almost unanimously agreed to be significant across multiple spectra of NationStates, the winner of "Noteworthy Event of the Year" is... The Predator Scandal!
The legacy of the Fall of The Black Riders in 2015 came back around to bring its curse down on DEN in April of 2016, which resulted in punishments for many top raiders for their intentional or unintentional involvement in illegal scripting, designed to give them an advantage in triggering. NationStates moderation brought the hammer down on the largest invader organization on NationStates at the time by over ten times (the next largest region had over 1000 nations fewer than DEN). While it seemed catastrophic to raiding at the time, this event eventually brought along the re-invigoration of The Black Hawks, the beginnings of Hydra Command and Firehelm, and the revival of The Invaders as a raiding giant, as well as a new generation of raiding leaders.

Congratulations again! Stay tuned for next year.

It's ignominious that we are giving DoS players awards now. Worst part is, it's not just one that is getting it, it's all of them. You act like they're a nuisance, but once you disregard them by doing things like not voting for them to get an award then they'll go away just like most pests.

I'd rather give it to someone or something actually worth noting, like 94 Block or Osiris. Hell, even USSD.

Much better them than me.. I don't really care. The majority of DOS players don't even pay attention to the site now, anyway. It's only like a select few that do. An award doesn't really affect much.

Award = recognition. Recognition = acknowledgement. Do I need to go on?

You know, guys, I nominated this because I went to a random GP thread looking for a random quote to nominate. Truly it was the quote that launched a thousand votes.

I also echo Sygian's sentiments strongly. We should not be giving the DOS any sort of attention, and I'm incredibly disappointed that the Gameplay Awards recognized them.

I would say that the main issue here is that we are giving DOS Players yet another dose of attention. As Syg has said, an award leads to recognition, with recognition leading to acknowledgement. He need not go on, as there is no reason for us to have "honoured" these individuals. I would be one of the first to admit that some of the stories of DOS players may be very interesting, intriguing, and some even a bit humorous. But here is the fact of the matter: Delete-On-Sight players do not deserve crap from us as Gameplayers, much less the award and recognition that we have given them. It doesn't matter whether or not the "majority" of them don't pay attention to the site. It's about the ones that do and showing them that they could have been here right along with us had they not gotten themselves DOS. DOS players are deemed DOS for a reason, as such we shouldn't be praising them for their deeds. I'll leave it up for you guys to be the Judge on this one, that's just how I see it. With that aside, I would like to congratulate all of the candidates that had their name called on this day. Every singe one of you, you all have worked so hard and these awards are well-deserved! o7

The Gameplay Awards 2016 wrote:Best Gameplay Newspaper: While all publications nominated are renowned for their quality reporting and editing, the winner of "Best Gameplay Newspaper" is...

I'm curious to what the final count was here? Public votes had Hell's Bells winning by about 5.

Congrats to the Miniluv Messenger, I guess the two issues in January and the one issue in December made more of an impact than the year round content Hell worked on.
