You can do what I do. Take old concepts and add them to something new that would work well with the old concept while adding in a fresh spin so it isn't a complete copy of the old.

True. But the problem is that I don't know what I would do with this idea. I have ideas for more OCs, but I don't know how to execute them properly in this RP.

My first NationStates OCs were Felix the Angel and Maju. I did Maju's character design first, even though Felix was introduced first.

While Felix, I feel now, is rather vanilla, I liked Maju's character more, ergo I introduced him into this RP too, first as a subordinate, and then as a big bad.

I've done RPs on other forums before, but I left those because the RP standards there were limited to anime fangirling and Mary Sue power wanking. Here, it's much better.

It takes time and practice, but OCs are greatly more easy to do than canon characters.

I did made one OC of a Hex Maniac, which Celestine should make a cameo once Serena is back in her world. Thankfully, I can tweak her a bit and describe what happened to Celestine in the one year time skip.

I, personally, don't like doing canon characters. The closest I've ever gone to doing one was introducing a 79 year old Hiccup and Toothless duo into another RP.

Yeah canon characters come with the headaches of trying to make sure to stay in character but I can't ditch the ones I'm with since I'm committed to those roles, plus I wanted to roleplay as them and accepted the difficulties that comes with them.

Of course, if you can develop a canon character in a way that's both consistent with his original personality and unique to your style, that's even better.

Canon characters are too restrictive. To me, it feels like plagiarising. Almost like kidnapping someone's kid or something. The closest I can get to that would be fandom settings with OCs, and even those settings have to have their own plot. I am a new RPer and pretty low on the skill threshold, so maybe that'll change with time. But, it definitely rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah if that happens than it is awesome, you have no idea how happy I was when I was told that I was doing Sans and Papyrus well since I was worry that I wasn't playing them well. But I would rather stick to ocs since I know how they would think and act and not worry about being redistricted by canon personality.

Agreed.

On the other hand, I would also enjoy using a canon character, but then bending and twisting him/her till it's my character. As I did with 79 year old Hiccup in TTOE.

I agree. In fact, I've seen about five multiverse RPs thus far, and four of them contain The Doctor in one form or another. It's almost like what oil is to french fries.

I choose OCs because I never feel like I can do canon characters justice. Like, I always feel like I'll get their characterization wrong or mess up with something somewhere. So I do OCs because I feel more comfortable when I know exactly what their characterization should be because I made them.

I'll do some canon characters, but I usually only do ones that don't have much characterization, so I can in a way make them my own.

Notice that Muffet isn't really given much personality in Undertale, Gold (and all the other player characters) doesn't have any personality, as it's supposed to be self-inserted into the story (that's how the Pokemon games have always worked), and Fay & Miyu never appeared in any released game.

The only canon character with an established personality I'm RPing is Simon Petrikov, but even then, I'm RPing an alternate version.

Kongou also has an established personality, but it'll be fun RPing her discovery of the multiverse.

Gonna have to agree with you on that one. I also Dragon Ball Z characters try to enter but either fail or succeed on entering the RPs. Those that succeed are of course nerfed so they don't blow up planets easily.

I've never understood the popularity of those particular characters. It seems that people will spring for them whenever a new FFA type RP appears.

Maybe they could learn something from TAO. Not to be a kiss-ass, but the GM did manage to get me more interested in this RP than the one I signed up for. Ask anyone, once I make my mind up that's it. Not sure what magic he/she worked, but uh, yup. I mean, I can explain a few things that I think makes the RP great, but hey - I'm new 'round here. All I know is, I intend to stick around and build this lore. Rather than clogging everything up with fandoms, why don't they try going full blown OG and seeing what they can cook up? They might be surprised.

I'm weird. I actually like using cannon characters, but only if I can get their personality down. Take Hades for example. Now I don't mean to brag but I think I've got his character down really well, and it's an absolute blast writing for him. Now granted I have some characters that I'm not so good at writing for, but I like the challenge of writing for them non-the-less.

Because it's the only part of all the Tokyo stuff I know in any detail, I'm having my first character (Pobeda) appear next to the, uh, crash site. Will certainly be awkward.
