Thermodolian National Assembly Elections

Due to the fact that no party was able to form a governing National Assembly as required by the constitution, the president has called for an emergency election. The representatives elected at this time will serve until the next election in 2021. After the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 2020, the Voting System Change Act, and the Secularization Act of 2020 the current ruling coalition fell apart.

On April 20th, 2020 the Voting System Change Act was brought up for debate. During the debate several conservative members of the United Thermodolia party expressed concern over the bill with some threatening to leave the party if the bill was passed. Six days later on April 26th, 2020 the bill was passed. Even though several members of the ruling party threatened to leave, the Speaker of The National Assembly and the Majority whip convinced them to stay.

Two days later on April 28th, 2020 the Secularization Act of 2020 was brought to the floor for debate. The Secularization Act stipulated that Thermodolia shall have no national or official religion and that the current official religion of Thermodolian Christianity shall no longer be the official religion and shall no longer be supported by the government. This act angered the conservative and religious members of the governing coalition. With 100 members threatening to leave the party and the National Assembly if the bill was passed. Ten days later on May 8th, 2020 the Secularization Act of 2020 was passed by a vote of 382-170. Minutes after the vote 100 members of the ruling coalition plus 70 members of the opposition made good on their threat to walk out.

Due to the constitutional requirement that a quorum in the National Assembly be 300 present members and the fear that the Left Coalition might not cooperate, the Speaker of the National Assembly declared an emergency recess. Many attempts to convince the 100 members of the ruling coalition to return failed. On May 10th an agreement was reached that the 100 members would return on the condition that the president veto both bills. However this also failed as on May 12th, 2020 the President signed both bills into law. Because of the continued failure of the ruling coalition to regain order in their own coalition, the speaker of the National Assembly opened up talks with the left coalition to govern the nation. On May 14th 2020 the leadership of the left coalition agreed to the offer and later that day the National Assembly was back in session.

Six days later on May 20th the Voting Rights Act of 2020 was brought up for debate. The Voting Rights Act of 2020 would allow those who have committed a felony the right to vote, Thermodolian citizens and nationals living abroad to vote, and legal resident aliens the right to vote. Two days later on May 20th the Voting Rights Act of 2020 passed by a vote of 330-52. However this arrangement did not last long do to infighting and the clashing of different political views the coalition failed.

Soon after he signed the Voting Rights Act of 2020 into law. The President Zarman had enough of the bickering and the protesting in the National Assembly. So on May 25th, 2020 he called for emergency elections to take place effective immediately. The Election Day was scheduled for July 20th 2020. Due to the Constitutional requirement that the National Assembly must not be out of session for more than a month per year a rump Assembly was formed.

The elections will be FPTP as the recently passed legislation has not yet taken effect. There are 552 seats in the National Assembly up for grabs.

The main parties running:

United Thermodolia: Big tent, moderate on economic policy, left wing socially. Been in power since 2012

Democratic Socialists: Left wing social policies, left wing economic populism, non-interventionalists

Libertarian Alliance: Far left social policies, center-right economic policy, isolationist

Thermodolian Nationalists: Moderate social policy, right wing economic populism. Wants to change to a parliamentary system.

New Centists Party: Moderate on social and economic policy

Independent Sorraca: Independence for Sorraca and its people, left wing economically, right wing socially

Christian-Conservatives: Far right wing social policies, moderate economic populism

Thermodolian Corporate Party: Corporate rule, right wing economic and social policies

Socialist Alliance: Wants to create a socialist state, far left social and economic policies

Foreign Involvement:
Under Thermodolian campaign finance and election laws; funding, aid, and personal from foreign governments is strictly prohibited. Any party that accepts the aforementioned aid will be disbanded and all party officials shall be charged with a class 1 felony.
