Empire is gone. New Republic formed. Luke formed a new Jedi Order.

Snoke, for reasons unknown, convinced Kylo Ren to betray Luke and murder his students. Luke, for reasons unknown but likely related to this massacre, went into what appears to be a self-imposed exile.

Snoke set up a neo-Imperial group called the First Order in the backwater reaches of the galaxy (the NR clearly is not strong enough to control the entire galaxy, which should be no surprise given the chaos that would likely have followed the Empire's collapse and the relatively small size of the Rebel Alliance forces that presumably formed it). The NR avoided open war, likely for political reasons (perhaps after just having had two galactic civil wars in a generation, the public is just tired of war). However, they quietly supported the Resistance under the table to wage a proxy war against the First Order.

Leia, leading the Resistance, sent her operatives to find Luke. Thus the events of the film.

The two big questions are how the First Order managed to get a weapon as powerful as Starkiller Base, and why Luke vanished.

The latter will likely be answered in subsequent films. The former, I suspect, will never be (outside of EU material at least), but in fairness, technology can develop far over a few decades, and the political situation for the last seventy years or so would warrant a focus on military developments.

Is the Resistance pretty much a continuation of the Rebel Alliance?

In some ways, it's a different war and several decades later. The Resistance also gets some unofficial support from the Republic for what it's worth.

They were originally envisioned as like a glowing silvery white.

You don't really count that, do you? That's clearly not intentionally white.

Chances are if someone cites something like that, it doesn't matter if it's accurate or not so long as it furthers their argument.

So no, I doubt Anollasia really cares.

I don't think its a direct continuation.

Ie, the Rebellion became the New Republic, which then sometime later had the Resistance split off, with backing from the Republic, to fight the First Order.

Though they share similar tactics and leadership.

Their strategic situations are somewhat different though.

To be honest, I didn't realize just how close we were coming to the season premiere. I'm so stoked.

Why would they call themselves the resistance? The FO isn't in charge now are they? Resistance would imply opposition to the New Republic.

Resisting the New Order within what is otherwise New Order territory/sphere-of-influence?
Though considering Organa's situation in the Resistance and as a pariah in the Republic, some measure of disagreement with the Republic could be indicated by the name as well.

The Republic evidently does not control the entire galaxy.

The Resistance is against the First Order. Their status with the New Republic seems to be that they are officially disavowed, but given some covert backing under the table.

Luke vanished because he felt shame.

He lost an entire generation of possible new Jedi, and he was unable to save his own nephew from the dark side.

He also didn't want to face Kyle's parents because he felt he had responsibility for protecting Kylo from the dark side, and he failed.

What do you mean.

Personally I like the idea of a Star Wars character who's trying to be bad, even to the point of being an in-universe Vader clone, but still can't quite do it because they feel the pull of the light.
