DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL MEN'S ICE HOCKEY TEAM

This will be Abanhfleft's seventh time participating in the World Cup of Hockey. The team matched the performance that they put up in WCoH 28, qualifying for the round of 16 and getting knocked out in the same stage once again. They were able to go a little further in WCoH 29, forcing a game 3 against Cosumar in the round of 16 and ultimately failing to come out on top. Will this be Abanhfleft's year, the year that they finally get past the round of 16? Or will they be just like Arsenal in the UEFA Champions' League, always getting eliminated in the round of 16?

Ficiscia going into its third WCoH on a high

Carinha, CAR - Leaving today from Carinha International Airport, the team for the XXXI World Cup of Hockey went off towards Hannasea just shortly after its return from Elejamie, where they had battled the former World Champion in the second game of a preparation series. The series had started with an home game against -Anthor- that showed a still troubled team with not the best teamwork that we had ever seen. Defensive mistakes had caused Ficiscia to go behind 0-2 against a team that can barely expect more from this cup than maybe, in case of a surprise, the Round of 16. Being seeded 17th, the Ficiscians can't hope for much more either, but looking at the group we were dealt the knockout games should be a goal for this team. But the squad always had a strong supply of offensive powers and technical geniuses, and thanks to this - and goals from Aleixos, Marcantor and Berjaman - Ficiscia managed to reverse the score. A powerplay goal by the home team had tied the score and forced the Ficiscians into a penalty shootout that resulted in a clear victory. In a second game in the nation with the trademark lines in its name, Ficiscia dominated clearly and showed that we will not have to fear any opponent ranked below us in this World Cup. The Lynx took the ice in a storm and scored three goals in the first period, among them a marvellous combination between Vero and Aleixos that the latter ended with his second goal in this campaign. Able to relax a little in the second and third period, Muratus let his fourth line play more, leading to only two more goals but also a clear 0-5 away victory.

But the real test for this team will be and has to be the match against Elejamie, home and away. Ficiscia started its home game with a brilliant defensive structure, correcting a former mistake of Ficiscian teams who often lacked stability in defense. Elejamie failed to score during the first twelve minutes despite heavy attacks and two powerplays, in a time that hockey expert Hadrianus Ninnius called "the best game of a Ficiscian team I had ever seen". What they displayed as well was fast counters, a skillful passing that cut through an Elejamie team that looked very much like what we can expect in the final round in Hannasea and managed to score the go-ahead goal after 12 miuntes and 42 seconds with a skillful, short-distance shot to the left side by Hejman. In consequence, Ficiscia's defenders dominated the game despite - or because - the game being not very physical. Their overview was strong and offensive D-men like Berjaman and Minor had their impacts on the game. It was a goal by the only 22-year old Harall Berjaman that brought Ficiscia up by two. A goal for Elejamie, again in the powerplay, caused the game to get tight again, but in the end of the game, there was an empty netter by Brica to settle all differences and give Ficiscia a 3-1 victory over the world's number 2. Despite the following away loss against Elejamie, again 1-3, this is more than enough reason to look forward to this tournament. We have given the word to our expert Ninnius.

"We should not forget that Elejamie had not have preparation games before they came to Carinha and were likely not as ready yet as our boys. It's not as important for Elejamie to be on top right from the start, while we cannot afford to lose points against a probably highly motivated Hannasea in our first match. Especially not if we want to avoid doing what we had to do the last cycles and face a top team of the world in the Round of 16. I think that every game showed us important qualities of this team. Ficiscia proved against -Anthor- that we are able of making a game, overturning a match and battle through a heavy defense. It was not easy to equalize this match when it was 0-2, and many smaller nations could easily beat a team like us if they go two goals ahead and can defend. But despite the team problems, we managed to fight back and overturn the score. This was very important, I believe, as this means that the squad got a lot of confidence from both this game and the high scoring victory that followed. Beating Elejamie probably did wonders for our mental state - we only managed a victory against Novaya Zemlya so far in a series that got lost anyway. Beating a strong opponent, the number two of the World Cup, can really spark something in a team and they surely don't have to be ashamed of what they showed.

If we take a look at the rest of our group, I think there is every reason for Ficiscia to be looking forward to this cup. This could very well be the year in which we finally make the top of a group. It's gonna be very important to take off strong against Hannasea, an unranked team that has a pool of hockey players that we cannot ignore. And of course, the hosts will be overly motivated and I think it is very important not to take a goal early to avoid the fans and the team getting into some kind of rush to overrun and crush us. It could happen very easily if the audience gets kickstarted by an early Hannasea goal. If you play such important games on the road, I like to score first and prevent anything happening in the opponent's mind. Next up is the group favourite of Nova Anglicana. We have a certain history of drawing against group favourites. I hope that we don't get that again, but a draw would still be a solid result. It's important for us to get as many points as possible to be seeded as high as we can in the next year, and if we manage to not lose games again until the KO round, with a bit of luck, we could even manage a top seed next year. We don't know much about Sjovenia either, and I can only assume that beating the Sjovenians, who are unranked, could already be the key to qualifying. We will have to see, but the results against -Anthor- make me very optimistic for this game. Even more so for Mercedini, a team who did only get one draw in its first attempt and still hasn't managed to get a victory. However, they have two players in the Novozemlyan league, and we have to watch out that we don't take them too lightly. Overall, this is a group we shouldn't assume to be easy, but it's fairly doable. My goal in this group would certainly be the Round of 16, preferably in the, say, top 10 of the qualifiers to get a good seed. And then, everything is possible."

The TDS Quick 'n' Easy Guide to the 31st World Cup of Hockey

Do I have to tell you about what happened in the last one? I'm pretty sure I do, so I'm going to give you a quick recap. At the beginning of the tournament, we were riding high, winning all of our games by at least three goals. In fact, the highlights of the group stage were the 6-1 opening day thrashing of Ethane and the 6-0 drubbing of the Land of Dat Boi. In the round of 16, we managed to knock out the hosts, winning both of our games 4-2 and 4-1. Nordeana also end down quite easily, as evidenced by the 4-1 and 2-0 wins in both of our games. And then, for the semi-finals, we were up against our old friends Kaboomlandia. Surely a couple of easy wins, you might think? I don't know what happened there but let me just say that 7-6 and 6-4 aren't exactly what you call "easy". What the hell happened there? Did the defence fall asleep or something? Either way, it carried on to the final against Valanora. We won game one, 5-4 in overtime. Seems fair enough. Then they won game two 6-5 (also in overtime) to force a game three. Then, to add insult to injury, they won game three and thus the tournament with a 3-2 RT win.

However, they still received a warm welcome home, with Coach Madgwick saying that he'll try to bring the trophy home again next time round. Indeed, after a couple of particularly long and hard training sessions (which were played in between ENIHL games) just to get the defence to wake up, that seemed like what he was saying would happen. Unfortunately, there was a tragic accident a couple of days after the ENIHL season came to an end (with his team, the Davenport Dockers, winning both the league and the playoffs), where he broke his arm after he fell off his motorbike just outside of Davenport. As a result, he'll not only miss the tournament but he'll also miss the first couple of months of the season. However, not only will he still accompany the Icy Elephants to Hannasea but Coach Madgwick managed to find a suitable replacement: Stacy Saunders, the half-Quebecois former junior squad captain, currently with the Kingston Knights over in the Quebec Hockey League. There was a slight problem with his first match with the senior side, going down 3-1 in a friendly against Ficiscia (with Saunders, assisted by Bill Harrison and Mike Cruickshank, scoring the only Elejamian goal in the second period), although he managed to turn things round when the Declan Madgwick Memorial Stadium over in Davenport hosted the rematch, which also ended in a 3-1 victory but this time it was for Elejamie; Cerin Meloten scored the first goal unassisted after intercepting the puck from a pass by Baldur Hejman, Anatoly Kasputin bagged the second (assisted by Meloten and Adam Keane) and Paul Morton netted the third (assisted by Saunders). Here's hoping that Stacy will work his magic with the senior side as he did with the juniors.

Image
Lucas Madgwick, who will sadly be missing the
tournament due to injury. However, he'll still be
joining the team for the trip and watching them
from the stands.
So, now that I've given you a little history lesson, let's take a look at our opponents over in the Guild of Pepperers Group, or Group H as I'm going to call it because it's much easier to say. And, first up, we've got Cosumar. In the last tournament over in Norrehavn, they came second in Group H, winning all but two games, thanks to a 2-2 draw against Nassau-Hessen (who would go on to finish third) and a 2-1 defeat to group winners Ko-oren on the final day; they would later go on to be swept in their Round of 16 series against Neu Engollon, losing game one 2-0 and game two 4-3. Indeed, this won't be the first time we'll play against them, as we also swept them in the quarter-finals of our successful WCoH29 run, winning game one 3-2 and game two 2-0. In other words, an opening day win is definitely on the cards, although it'll probably be only by a couple of goals.

Next, we have the Greater Vakolicci Haven. They're new to the tournament, which doesn't seem that bad, especially since Ficiscia managed to make it to the Round of 16 on their first go in Quebec and, back in the 27th edition, Prusy Krolewskie would've gone through to the next round had they not drew 6-6 to Havl (in fact, both teams went home and San José Guayabal, who beat Kaboomlandia 2-1, joined us instead). However, I can't seem to find anything about ice hockey - teams, history, players, popularity, you name it - when I did my research as I was making this article. However, one thing I did manage to find was how they did at the inline hockey part of the Multiverse Games from last year. Long story short, both their men's and women's team came dead last in their groups, with the men's team exiting the tournament without scoring a single goal; fortunately, their women's team managed to do a lot better, scoring six, but it still wasn't enough for them to get any points on the board. So this pretty much means that this will be an easy win.

Then we've got Anthor. In both of their World Cups so far, they haven't gotten out of the Group Stage. In their inaugural tournament, they came dead last in Group H with their sole point came from a goalless draw against Kazirstan (who'd later finish fourth). They showed a small sign of improvement in Group F the following tourney, thanks to a 5-3 win over the Republic of Arkan (who'd go on to finish last with one win and four losses) which was then followed by a 3-3 draw against Western Bjorniac. but they could only manage a fifth place finish. So, naturally, they're hoping to turn things round and finally make it out of the group stages. While I can't imagine them beating us, I will say that there's a very good chance that they might be joining us in the Round of 16, so they're not a team to take lightly.

And, to round it off, we've got Tobiasia. Another newcomer to the tournament, although again I couldn't find anything ice hockey related. However, their women's field hockey played at the Olympics over in Paripana came fifth in their group with one win, two draws and two losses. Wrong type of hockey, I know, but at least it's something. In fact, I was going to bring up how the Greater Vakolicci Haven did in the hockey at the last Olympics (spoiler alert: Their men's team came second in the group with a 3-1-1 record, beat San Llera 1-0 in the quarters and lost 5-3 on penalties of Fluvique after the match ended 2-2. I can't seem to find any information about the finals, though, so drop me a line if they got the bronze or left empty-handed) but that seemed a bit excessive. Either way, we've got this in the bag. After that, we've got a day off, so the team can probably rest easy and celebrate Adam's 25th birthday.

So there we go. Of course, I could go on about how easy the group is and how the Icy Elephants will be making it to the round of 16 for the fifth time in a row. Indeed, it'd be something to pad this out. But, to be honest, what's more important will be is the question of who'll be joining us. Will it be the Anthoran Ducks or will it be the Cosumar Ice Dragons? On the one hand, the Cosumar squad have been in the World Cup of Hockey for a long time, going as far back as the twelfth edition. And, going through the results of previous tourneys, the last time they missed the knock-out stages was in the 26th edition. But, on the other hand, there's a good chance that Anthor will turn the tables and grab a surprise win, seeing as they managed to get a 3-0 win in the shootout after their match against Ficiscia (a team ranked 20 places higher) ended 3-3. Granted, they lost the following match 5-1 on home ice but it was still a sign that they could be in for some great things. Not to mention the 7-1 and 2-0 wins over the Second Ndakene Federation in a couple more pre-tournament friendlies. But still, if I had to choose... I'm probably going to say Cosumar. Sorry Anthor.

As for everyone else? Reigning champions Valanora will be in the Guild of Launderers Group (aka Group F), which will be pretty easy for them seeing as their biggest opponents are Vilita and Turori, ranked twenty places below them. Same goes with the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, who are in the Guild of Apothecaries Group (aka Group D) where their toughest opponents are the United States of Devonta (who are ranked 19th in the world alongside Torisakia, who are missing the competition). Gregoryisgodistan, who are going through a little bit of a rough patch lately (Ro16 exit in Valanora to Neu Engollon of all people, lost the finals in Quebec to us and another Ro16 exit in Norrehavn, again to old rivals Quebec), will begin their attempt at a comeback in the Guild of Mercers Group (aka Group A), alongside Nephara, Ilyseum and newcomers Tumbra and Beaverriver. And Kaboomlandia and Novaya Zemlya are in the Guild of Alchemists Group (aka Group C), alongside Aquitayne, Parah and the Second Ndakene Federation.

And there we have it. I was going to write a little paragraph asking where the likes of Ko-oren, Ontorisa and Norrehavn are but I'm pretty sure there's a good explanation for that. Besides, they're probably going to come back in the 32nd installment, fully refreshed. Either way, I'll just shut up and get myself ready for the opener against Cosumar. Here's looking forward to an exciting tournament.

Beaverriver Hockey National Team
This World Cup of Hockey marks the first time that Beaverriver has sent a hockey team to as part of an effort led by Gela Jorsh, the president of Beaverriver Hockey Association(BHA), to expand hockey’s presences in the nation. Every player on the team competes in the top amateur leagues of Beaverriver as there’s no established professional league. However, Jorsh comments that "the association is working hard to set up a world class hockey league in the nation." However Hockey does face an uphill climb entering the professional sports scene as it competes against other more popular sports like soccer and lacrosse and Beaverriverites prefer outdoor sports over those indoors.

NEPHARA NATIONAL ICE HOCKEY TEAM
Style Modifier:
-1
Home Stadium: Whitewater, Treason (12,000 capacity)
Home Kit: Emerald green jerseys, black pants, white trim
Away Kit: Terracotta jerseys and pants, green trim
Nickname: The Gulls
Captain: Esther Devante

Aristide Kearney continues to lead the Gulls, as he has done for ten years - a far more hands-on approach than most managers. He's had to deal with the departure of a number of key players as the side finally has to rebuild from some of the key faces of the first generation. They've made themselves into a capable second-tier side in the international ranks but yet to genuinely threaten to become a contender. To Kearney's mind, that has to change.

Tactics
The Nepharim don't have many technical players in their ranks, but they are an intimidating physical prospect to face, bonded by an indomitable team spirit that transcends club and state rivalries the moment they pull on the green jersey. They play to their advantage, backing themselves in defence and striking hard and decisively on the counterattack, relying on star centre Esther Devante for a creative spark.

STAFF
Manager - Aristide Kearney - Age 53
Assistant Manager - Jane Hawthorn - Age 48
Aristide Kearney, a rough Southerner who lead state league club Riverside to be the dominant team of the capital before being picked up by Sabrefell United and leading them to victory as well, was the obvious choice for the Gulls. He's been commended for showing none of the Southern favouritism that those in the hockey heartland of the Northwest feared, and with that concern out of the way Nephara is left with a fierce, determined man, a born leader, who will stop at nothing to see Nephara triumph. Hawthorn played under him before injury ended her career at 33 - she has a natural genius intellect, a talent for biting sarcasm, and a personal relationship with the game's more violent side.

GOALKEEPERS
G - 1 - Evangelos Tsatsimas (Gaspe Oilers, QUE) - Age 28

World Cup of Hockey
Matchday 1: Hannasea vs Mercedini (56)

History was made in the opening game of the 31st World Cup of Hockey as Mercedini recorded their first ever victory against hosts Hannasea which was tight to the very end, they also record d their first clean cheer as they beat the hosts 1-0. Both managers set out strong teams to try and open their respective campaigns in the right manner, with Mercedini opting for trusted defensive pairing Peter and Ian Pollock (now playing their Hockey in Novaya Zemlya), as well has a front three in Carpic, Morton and Arthur who played together in Mercedini's last outing in Norrehavn, so its safe to say Mercedini has grown as a team. The stage was set for both teams, with Mercedinians and Hannaseans cheering in the packed stadium

The opening period of the game was very tentative between the two nations, with neither team having any clear cut chances until the late stages of the game. Mercedini looked slightly on top with a couple of slap-shots in quick sucsession which have the nervy Hannasean goalkeeper some action in the opening half. Arkenton looked relatively unchallenged in the Mercedinian net, with only a small handful of chances coming his way. Mercedini looked relatively comfortable with the opening period, although both teams went in at the interval level, 0-0.

The start of the second period was similar, but a lot more open. Plenty of half-chances at both ends but with the majority of those heading Hannasea's way this time, they had he crowd on their side and used it to full effect as they added pressure to the Mercedinian defence and goalie. With Hannasea keeping possession effectively, Mercedini would have to take their chances on the break. They got their golden chance when a slip and a rare defensive mistake from the Hannasea's defence gave Zach Arthur a 1-on-1 with the Nordeanan goaltender, he managed to flick the puck past the goalie but the goalkeeper got enough on the puck to send it over the net and back into play, frustration for the Mercedinians . A freak slap shot from midfield from Hannasea deflected off Ian Pollock and towards the net, the goalkeeper was wrong footed but thankfully, the puck hit the frame of the net and went wide, to the dismay of the home crowd. At the horn, both teams were still level and the match still goalless

The third and final period, however, was very different and started with Mercedini taking precedence over the game, they held possession without any further defensive errors. Mercedini pressed and pressed until Max Morton finally got the goal that they craved and gave Mercedini a slender goal lead against the hosts and went a goal up but with plenty of time left for a Hannasea comeback. Time ticked down and frustrated Hannasea so they couldn't get any time in possession in of the puck. The horn blew and the match was over, Mercedini came through a scare from the hosts but the came away with the win, their first ever in a WCOH tournament.

FINAL: Hannasea 0 - 1 Mercedini (56)
(0-0) (0-0) (0-1)
Goal Scorers: Morton

Gregoryisgodistan 1–0 Tumbra

"Good evening, and welcome to Hannasea for today's World Cup of Hockey opener between Tumbra and Gregoryisgodistan. The Ice Slaves are ready to rock, ready to roll, and we are ready to go.

...

"18:32 left in the first period, Gregoryisgodistan has the puck, Loyal Friend of Lord Almighty Gregory Harry Rupertson passes it to Pervert Chaser JDJJ8138, he shoots, but it's saved by Adam Collett. And now some fans behind the net are taking off their shirts to reveal painted chests with the message "GREG IS NOT GOD". And Pervert Chaser JDJJ8138 is furious, he's running into the stands with his Pervert Chasing Knife, and he's cutting off their privates. And now the Enemy Crushers are running into the stands and crushing them all for blasphemy. And the Gregoryisgodistanis in the stands are going crazy. They're chanting "DEATH TO HEATHENS" at the top of their lungs while clapping. Well, now those heathens are dead and we're set to resume.

...

"11:09 left in the first period, Maguire has the puck for Tumbra, oh, but a vicious check into the boards by Enemy Crusher Porkbert McPorkerstein. And Maguire is down at the ice clutching at his head, while the refs call Enemy Crusher Porkbert McPorkerstein for a five minute major for boardng. And now Enemy Crusher Porkbert McPorkerstein is furious with the call and he's going to crush all the refs to death as the Gregoryisgodistanis sceam "DEATH TO THE REFS" and clap wildly. And now all those heathen refs are dead so they're going to have to summon an alternate crew. And Enemy Crusher Porkbert McPorkerstein is threatening to crush them too if they don't overturn the penalty, but they won't, so they're getting crushed too! And the fans are going wild, the Gregoryisgodistanis are throwing prune juice and gruel at the Tumbran players and the refs, and all the alternate refs are dead. So, they'll summon another alternate crew, who agree to overturn the penalty. And Enemy Crusher Porkbert McPorkerstein gives them a cake to show his thanks. It's a yummy cake, not poisoned or anything, we really, truly appreciate it.

"1:02 left in the first period, Enemy Crusher Crushallov Dafree Republics checks Houghton into the boards, and now she gets up and punches Enemy Crusher Porkbert McPorkerstein in the stomach. They're going to get into a fight and Enemy Crusher Crushallov Dafree Republics is going to try to crush Houghton to death. But the Tumbran players all storm onto the ice and together, they lift the 930 pound Enemy Crusher off the ice. What a group effort. The refs decide not to call a penalty on anyone, out of fear for their lives.

...

"13:49 left in the second period, and here comes Enemy Crusher Krushallah Krushdumpy, he is streaking down the ice, nobody near him, he shoots, HE SCORES! GOAL ICE SLAVES! THEY LEAD 1-0! And now Enemy Crusher Krushallah Krushdumpy is celebrating by crushing 32 random fans. And now they're all celebrating by burning Tumbran flags and Republican flags, statues of Dumpy O'Rumpy, and paintings of Dumpy O'Rumpy. And the fans are chanting "DEATH TO DUMPY" at the top of their lungs, and again they throw prune juice and gruel at the Tumbran players and fans, and now they're throwing human vileness at them as well. This is awesome! "DEATH TO TUMBRA" is the latest chant. What a game so far!

"4:09 left in the second period, and Enemy Crusher Crushy McCrushawitz checks Theodore Donnelly into the boards, and then stomps on him with his skate. Donnelly is now bleeding from his face, and he'll be taken off in a medical stretcher. Meanwhile, Enemy Crusher Crushy McCrushawitz is going to be ejected and he crushes one of the refs as punishment but they'll still eject him. And now he's crushing random people on his way out, and he's stolen the Zamboni and is driving it into the stands, running over random fans. And now he drives it through the wall of the arena and into the locker room, running over random arena employees. This is so incredibly awesome I can hardly believe my eyes!

...

"12:03 left in the second period, Cochran comes down the ice, shoots, but it's saved by Enemy Crusher Porky "Fatso The Third" McFattel with his humongous body. And the fans are again going wild. And now it's a faceoff. Dawson wins the faceoff, shoots, stick save by Enemy Crusher Porky "Fatso The Third" McFattel. And it's cleared out of the zone!

...

"59 seconds left, Ice Slaves still winning, and the Tumbrans pull the goalie for an extra attacker. Bryan-Kirkmauld comes up the ice, he's in the zone, but it's cleared all the way out to the middle. 40 seconds left. And now Enemy Crusher Crushdaguaya Balians tackles Barry Maguire, that will be two minutes for roughing, he'll go to the box, but now the Ice Slaves can ice with impunity. We've seen this before.

...

"39 seconds left, Greenwood comes down, but Enemy Crusher Porkbert McPorkerstein clears it away, no icing because of the power play, now there's 20 seconds left and they're in their own area. 10 seconds left, taken away again, sent down the ice, there's the horn, ICE SLAVES WIN!

"And now the Ice Slaves are burning Tumbran flags and flags of all the Enemy List nations on the ice, and they are burning statues and painting of Dumpy O'Rumpy, Queen Margaret, "King" Andreas, and many other heathens on the ice, and they are roasting marshmallows over it and making smores. And even the commoners will participate per special dispensation from Lord Almighty Gregory. And this is awesome. The fans are going wild, some Gregoryisgodistanis will join them and feast as well. They all have special permission from Lord Almighty Gregory. This is awesome. Well, we've got to go now, we'll see you tomorrow here in Hannasea!"

The team's first match was against Abahnfleft. In most sports, that would mean it was pretty rough.

Hockey was one of these "most sports".

"You did a great job out there, Tyler."
"It's Tyson, sir." Tyson said, trying not to trigger the coach's mouth. "Tyson Sharp. Tyler Sharp is a Pokémon Trainer."
"Ah, yes. I'm sorry, Tyler."
Tyson sighed.
"Well, I'd say this all went to plan, Abanhfleft is the group's hardest team." Lee said, smiling. "If we can keep it up, we might actually win the group!"
"We'd have won this if someone didn't play me and Lee separate!" yelled Létourneau. Briain started to gasp air.
"For Arceus' sake, why do you have to be so combative of the manager?" asked Lee.
"He doesn't play us right at all! Chemistry rules that we would play and sh- did you just cover up your-" Létourneau was about to finish it before she finally covered her ears.
"YOU DARE TO CHALLENGE MY LINE-PICKING SKILLS? I'LL HAVE YOU REMINDED, YOU PHILISTINE, GENUFLECT, ARROGANT, TWO TIMED, MORONIC BLONDE THAT I WAS THE ONE THAT TOOK A PATHETIC STILWATER SHARKS AND TURNED IT INTO ONE OF THE FINEST HOCKEY CLUBS OF THIS HEAVILY RESPECTED UNIFIED SUNRISE CONUNDRUM! FOR I CHOSE TO SHARE MY HOCKEY KNOWLEDGE AND SPILL IT OVER YOUR HEAD LIKE A WATERFALL OF GRACE AND SMART AS AN ACT OF GOODWILL TOWARDS A LAND THAT WELCOMED SO PEACEFULLY!"
...
"Fine, fine." said Létourneau, sighing.
"...Let it get the best of me again, didn't I?"
"Yes, sir." replied Sharp.
"Nobody deaf?"
"They took notice of the signs."
"Ah, yes. Thank you, Tyler."
"...Tyson."
"Quite. I'm sorry, Tyler."
"...I think you're just doing it for the hell of it."
"Possibly, Tyler. Anyway, kids, let's train the fundamentals tomorrow and prepare for our next match."
Tails... Watch out, you're gonna crash, aaaaah!

Ficiscian squad ready for the first match

Hours before Hannasea would take the ice of the Skinners and Tailors stadium, a unusually styled building, for their opening match against Mercedini, Ficiscia was scheduled to hold their last public on-ice training before facing the hosts of this tournament tomorrow. It was obvious when we visited the training session that this is a team more than ready for battle. Manuel Aleixos, future Ficiscian superstar playing in Novaya Zemlya, not only shined with his perfect passes and shots but also oozed confidence before the match with Hannasea. The youngster displayed a cool and easy attitude, showing off his tricks and scoring a few show goals against Porcius and Aedificor. Brica and Marcantor once again showcased their perfect passing as they did in the Ficiscian league, the two SSP Carinha star wingers will definitely look forward to shine in the game against Hannasea. The squad is ready to shine in this crucial opening game, captain Decimius Vero explained to us after the training.

FNSN.fc: Decimius Vero, tomorrow you're playing your third World Cup, the third time as captain of this team. How has the experience changed over time?

Decimius Vero: To be honest, not so much changed inside the team, however of course it became a little more of a routine. When we went to Quebec, everyone was really new to this and nobody had any experience at international ice hockey except Manuel [Aleixos, ed.] from the WJHC. But now most of us had played one or two World Cups, some of us the Olympics, and we are all much more prepared for what may expect us. And of course, goals have shifted. When we played Quebec back then in our first Round of 16, it was an experience that we hadn't expected and we were more than happy with this achievement. Nowadays nobody of us is ashamed to say "I want to reach the quarterfinals". And we have become a much tighter community.

Do you think Hannasea, your first opponent, will benefit much from the home advantage?

I think you do always benefit from playing at home, and of course there is a certain chance that they will get carried away. We have not seen much of this year's Hannasean team so far and of course we'll try to see as much as we can when they play Mercedini tonight. All of us will be watching, and we'll hope to spot the weaknesses of this team. But even if you have a home advantage, it can somewhat be broken if you don't get into the game. The fans can assist you as much as they want, there is no way you will win anything unless you, the men on the ice, play well. We'll have to be careful, but nothing changes the fact that we are the favourites against Hannasea, as we will be against any unranked team.

The dominating topic at home is the same before every WCoH - people wonder how much Ficiscia's usually lacking physical abilities will affect the team's performance. What can you say to those people?

Well, Ficiscia's ice hockey is traditionally based on non-physical criteria such as technique and speed. I mean, obviously this can be a little bit of a disadvantage in international games, but then again, we didn't have to fear opponents so far. If players get pushed away in front of the goal, this is far from beneficial for the team, but as our coach says: If you score goals in the first attempt, problems at catching the rebounds don't matter. Each team has its strengths and weaknesses. Ours lay in front of the goal. I don't think this will be what is hindering us so far from advancing in the World Cup.

Later tonight, Hannasea played Mercedini in a opening game that was fairly equal with maybe slight advantages for the Mercedinians. The hosts, who were assumed to be the biggest threats to steal points from Ficiscia apart from top seed Nova Anglicana due to the home advantage, couldn't get any points against Mercedini. The team which had won its first WCoH game is commonly seen as no big threat to our boys as they should be able to beat a team with Mercedini's track record, even though you can never know that before the game. In the second match of the night, Sjovenia stood little chances against Nova Anglicana in a game that clearly proved the top seed's ambition to win this group. The game of MD3 against Nova Anglicana will surely be a decisive one for the flow of this campaign.

That's right, Steve! Good morning, Elejamie! The Icy Elephants got their World Cup of Hockey campaign off to a good start thanks to a 4-1 victory over Cosumar. The Ice Dragons, ranked thirteenth, last met Elejamie in the quarter finals of the 29th World Cup of Hockey over in Quebec, a series that resulted in two straight Elejamian wins - 3-2 in the first game and 2-0 in the second. And, despite several good attempts, the Cosumarites were unable to avoid an opening day defeat, now 0-3 against the Icy Elephant. Here are the highlights.

The first period got off to a good start, with Elejamie very nearly taking the lead thirty seconds in when Anatoly Kasputin's shovel shot was saved by Nemanja Zamatin. However, shortly after the face-off, Francisco Solano had to sit out for two minutes when he accidentally collided with Sholakh Marszai. Despite being a player down, the Icy Elephants managed to hold off the opposition. In fact, during the penalty kill, Cerin Meloten actually put Elejamie forward thanks to some clever deking and assistance from Kasputin. That wasn't to say the Cosumar team weren't trying. René Silverii's shot went into the stands, Reid Muir's shot was easily saved by Antonio Cervantes, Silver Worrilow was knocked away by Mike Cruickshank's stick. Even when Felipe Barajas received a double minor for high-sticking Nico Stang, Cervantes still blocked everything the opposing team threw at him. At the end of the period, the score was 1-0 to Elejamie and, although it was still early, things seemed to be going their way.

The second period, which was a relatively clean affair, saw Cosumar very nearly get one back with a good slapshot from Hugh Vergstenen, with Cervantes blocking the shot and, just before it could go in on the rebound, he got a glove to the puck to force a face-off. In fact, it was Elejamie who would score first that period, doubling their lead in the third minute with a nice wrist shot from Stacy Saunders, who was asssisted by Paul Morton and Carlos Sierra. It was 3-0 about ten minutes later, with James Han stealing the puck from Corzina Prentice and passing it to Pael Atenar, who netted it off the one-timer. However, Cosumar were able to snatch a quick goal back with forty-five seconds to spare, with Alex Douglass managing to get the puck past Antonio Cervantes with a well-time snap shot. Despite a last-ditch effort from Cosumar to add another one to the board, the puck missed and, a couple of second laster, the period came to a close, with the score being 3-1 to Elejamie.

The third period was a hard-fought affair. Three minutes in, Terak Sconberg was sent to the box for slashing. However, despite now having the player advantage for the first time all match, the Elejamians were unable to keep putting goals on the board. This shot from Francisco Solano was easily saved by Zamatin and this attempted second goal from Meloten hit the post, which was recovered by Alex Johnston. Eventually, with five minutes remaining in the third period, Elejamie managed to add a fourth goal onto the board, thanks to Ethan Swinburne, a wrist shot through the five hole and assistance from line-mates Aaron Andrews and Felipe Barajas. Although Elejamie were down another player, with Andrews sitting out for two minutes for holding Dvala de Varden, Cosumar were still unable to break through the Elejamian defence. Eventually, the match ended 4-1 to Elejamie, which saw them shoot to the top of the group.

In a post-match interview, head coach Michael Madgwick said "A good opening game. The defence managed to work together beautifully and as a team. A great bunch of goals from Cerin, Stacy, Pael and Ethan. Even though he let one in, Toni still did a great job in goal. Again, a good game and proof that those extra training lessons were definitely worth it."

"How do you feel going into your next game?"

"Pretty confident that we'll take this one. I'm not getting ahead of myself here, since the GVH might pull out a few tricks. But I don't really see them pulling off a win against us. Nothing really worth worrying about."

Meanwhile in the other match of the day, it was a close call but Tobiasia managed to get a 4-3 win in their match against the Greater Vakolicci Haven. Tonight, Anthor will get their campaign underway as they take on Tobiasia, who are looking to make it two out of two; Cosumar will have their day off; and Elejamie will face the Greater Vakolicci Haven. Will the Icy Elephants be able to extend their lead at the top of the table? Or will they lose it? Find out tomorrow on Puck Drop!

Elsewhere in the tournament, there's a four-way tie for first place over in the Guild of Brewers group as both of the opening games - Northi Arabia vs Cheongji and Qasden vs Nassau Hessen - ended without a single goal being scored! Crazy, huh? According to a couple of fans that somehow managed to stay both awake and sober due to the games, it's believed that the old casks used to build the arena might've had some alcohol left in them with the resulting smell making everyone drunk...

Tobiasia felt a lovely place to be in this world of sport. With the Olympics coming to an end, and Tobiasia strong in the ITT, with the football world cup coming up, a 4-3 victory in the hockey was brilliant!

“...Fliederbären scoore!”

Never have I experienced such a day in our capital.
With those words, the commentator had the crowd
on the blue square bellowing their throats out,
jumping up and down; for many years I have lived
in our Villi Kapitili but this atmosphere was something
I will remember for the rest of my life. It was a party
on the streets and it started with the goal. As I was
standing there, watching the match, I could see people
in feather-bellied polar bear make-up and costumes
dancing around and the viewing room became a festival.
It was a joyous, playful occasion and I would like to
thank our players for giving us this cause to celebrate.
The feeling of having achieved something will dominate
our capital and no doubt our entire Union through the
days of the world cup.

Fliederbären Beat Narsora 1:0
by Julia Gehinflin

Villi Kapitili- After smaller start up problems, the Union's hockey team has achieved an unfathomable victory against Narsora, scoring their second goal of the tournament and not letting a single shot past.

The game began only slowly, the Fliederbären obviously bent on keeping up the defensive play style which had failed on the previous match day and passed almost uneventful, as neither side managed to gain a clear advantage over the other save for a short Narsoran attack near the end which was quickly cut off by goaltender Halivlei.

Aggressive playing introduced the second period, neither side ready to leave the pitch without scoring and the Union's defence was hammered by Narsora. In the fifteenth minute of the second period however, the Fliederbären broke through as captain Tactenav and player Emmersi went for the enemy goal, passing the puck between each other and Tactenav scoring the 1:0.

The final period saw the Fliederbären pushed into a defensive position and Narsora take the initiative. After fifteen minutes then, defender Jaakola was given a penalty for tripping a charging enemy player. Said player smashed onto the ice and was taken out of the game due to fears concerning a concussion.

As the end of the match was signalised, the Fliederbären carried their first win of the cup off the pitch with them and it was well deserved at that. Despite the first period progressing only slowly, it was a match worth watching.

The Tumbran Herald

Ice Lions Crumble against Ice Slaves

THE Ice Lions' campaign got off to a bad start, as they lost to the Ice Slaves of Gregoryisgodistan, 1-0. The match was marked by several instances of violence that would almost certainly have gotten any other team completely sent off.

The match got off to an exciting start with the Ice Slaves keeping possession of the puck, but just two minutes into the first period, Adam Collett saved a flying puck from a Pervert Chaser named JDJJ8138 - all Gregoryisgodistanis, except for a select few, have identification that doubles for their names - while some fans behind the Collett goal took off their shirts, revealing signs with the message "GREG IS NOT GOD". These supporters were later castrated by the aforementioned JDJJ8138, but it has been confirmed by the Foreign Office that these supporters were not Tumbran supporters.

Seven minutes in, Harry Maguire had the puck, but he was absolutely crushed by Porkbert McPorkerstein, who was at first given a five minute major for boarding, but after two sets of referees were murdered by McPorkerstein, it was overturned - much to the dismay of the Ice Lions. The Tumbran fans in the stands were overwhelmed by prune juice and gruel, which is standard fare in Gregoryisgodistan. One unnamed fan who managed to survive the night of carnage mentioned that the gruel was "quite dry" but "filling" and that the prune juice "tasted of water". Overall, the fan said, "the food certainly wasn't the best but it managed to get the job done".

With 1 minute left in the first period, Clare Houghton was checked by Crushallov Dafree Republics, who she subsequently got into a fight with and nearly lost her life to, if not for a group effort by the Ice Lions to stop Crushallov. The match was quickly taking a very dangerous turn for the worse, as fires from the burning of flags were everywhere. However, due to the advisory published by the Foreign Office, fans did not try to engage the Gregoryisgodistanis, and those that did were pulled back, subjecting them to further humiliation by the Gregoryisgodistani fans. One Tumbran fan was taken to hospital with a concussion after a full bottle of prune juice landed on her head. Her condition is currently not serious.

Seven minutes into the second period, Krushallah Krushdumpy scored against Collett, and celebrated by stomping on 32 fans - again, the Foreign Office has confirmed that all of them were not of Tumbran identity. The Gregoryisgodistanis were celebrating by burning Tumbran flags and chanting insults against the leader of the Free Republics.

Donnelly was checked by McCrushawitz, and then injured - something that got him an immediate ejection, killing one of the referees in his wake. Donnelly was taken off and the match continued.

The Ice Slaves were too powerful for the Ice Lions - the sumo-wrestler build of the Enemy Crushers were simply too much for the defencemen to handle. However, it must be noted that this is a Gregoryisgodistani match, and thankfully none of the players were injured. The team's next match is against Beaverriver, who lost to Gregoryisgodistan just 1-0 today.

Mercedini Sports Daily
World Cup of Hockey
Matchday 2: Mercedini (56) vs Nova Anglicana (11)

After making history in their first match, Mercedini couldn't shock the group favourites Nova Anglicana as they fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat. The match was a chance to show the Mercedini could hang with the big teams in the hockey world, but they came up just short due to a clinical 2nd period by Nova Anglicana's front three. Mercedini went toe to toe with the team ranked 11th in the tournament and had the opportunity to take a point when they scored in the 3rd, but it wasn't enough as they lost their first match of the tournament, opening up the group meaning Ficiscia (who thrashed hosts Hannasea 6-1) leap-frogged the Blue Bears into second place to occupy the final knockout spot in the group.

The first period started very much the same as their opening match, with both teams adapting to their opponents' play. This meant that few shots and opportunities were forged in the opening period of the match. The Mercedinian Big Band (usually reserved for Football matches), made their way to Hannasea to play classic and contemporary tunes from Mercedini, Nova Anglicana and Hannasea, which pleased all members of the crowd. The biggest chance of the period came suprisingly to defensiveman Ian Pollock, who shot upfield with the puck, but couldn't guide the puck into the net as the Anglican goalie made a composed save to keep the period goalless. That is how it stayed until the horn.

The second period was a lot more open between both teams, with both nations trading chances in the opening minutes of the period. N.Anglicana showed their hockey prowess a few moments later as a vicious slap shot evaded the glove of Carl Arkenton to open the scoring in the second period of the game. Mercedini defended resolutely after that goal, not trying to give Nova Anglicana another goal before the end of the period. Which is exactly what they did right at the end of the period, with the seconds ticking down, Anglicana went all out attack. One of the players took the puck and dribbled it past the defence before trickery took the puck out of the reach of the Mercedinian goalkeeper, a simple flick put the puck in the net to give the Anglicans a two goal buffer going into the final period.

The third and final period of the match was where Mercedini finally came alive, but it was too little too late for the blue bears. The damage had already been done. A late goal from young academy player Lambeth Carpic halved the deficit that Mercedini needed but the Anglicans held on for the victory and the three points to take them three clear of all other challengers. The loss for Mercedini throws then right into the mix for second place as Ficiscia and the Blue Bears are level on points, but Ficiscia have a game in hand. The final match day will be where it will all kick off as Mercedini and Ficiscia play each other with a potential knockout spot up for grabs. The next match will be against Sjovenia, another unranked team that they will be expected to beat.

FINAL: (56) Mercedini 1 - 2 Nova Anglicana (11)
(0-0) (0-2) (1-0)

Brilliant start into 31st World Cup of Hockey

Hadrianus Ninnius from Hannasea - We, and many others such as Decimius Vero, told you that this opening match will be a difficult one, and it certainly did look like one before. A host team who'd already had its first game facing a team that has its first match of the tournament, in a new environment. But it quickly turned out that while Hannasea's squad was surely motivated enough to scare every opponent in the field, it did not have the quality needed to match the world's Number 17 from Ficiscia. In the first match played under the new flag, Ficiscia's national team displayed an athletic and technical strength superior to Hannasea's throughout the game and benefitted from being fresher than the hosts, who seemed to not have enough power in the third period. This led to a collapse of the team and three more goals by Ficiscia in 13 minutes that sealed the 6-1 victory over Hannasea. We all knew this team has a strong point in its passing abilities and it decided to showcase them in the end of the game, but what may be more important to experts and coaches is the first period, when Ficiscia demonstrated it can also score against a hard opponent trying not to concede goals. It took only four minutes until a shot by Anderr Thorvaldssenn rebounded to the left wing, where Baldur Hejman was ready to lift the puck over Jake Mellor's pad.

This all but typically Ficiscian goal, scored deep in the slot through a rebound, seemed to boost the confidence of the team into its physical abilities and also silenced the crowds as we hoped it would. Fierce attacks caused the Hannasean defenders to lose track of the fast wingers and the exact passes of our forwards. The result of this were multiple penalties and powerplays for Ficiscia. It was this moment when the Lynx showed what they are really worth, when they were able to use the second ability after a hook by Zack Crawford, to score. Kyrillos Brica, usually known as a passer, one-timed a puck into the goal from the right faceoff circle to a calming 2-0 lead. And another very positive moment was when this team showed that even a setback, like Hannasea's first and only goal by Gallagher off a rebound, couldn't throw them off their track and they reacted only seven minutes later by scoring the third goal, a mid-distance shot by defender Harall Berjaman who advanced cleverly. As we already mentioned, the third period was a display of domination by the Ficiscian side after Hannasea's stamina had expired. Two hard games against Mercedini and Ficiscia took their toll, as did playing with only three lines against the solid four-line roster of Ficiscia. The greater possibility to revolve surely decided this match in favour of the team in black, white and green.

Now what does this mean for Ficiscia's tournament? It is hard to say how exactly we should value this victory, if the team is even stronger than we thought and dared to hope or if Hannasea wasn't bringing their best game - or whether we simply overestimated this host team. With Nova Anglicana looking rather convincing in their 2-1 victory over Mercedini, the top seed of the group should not be unbeatable. Nevertheless, their 4-1 victory over Sjovenia showed us that taking this team lightly could be very dangerous. If Muratus fails to motivate his team to the fullest for whatever reason, it will be almost impossible to beat them. But we are confident that this team can bring their A-Game that carried them to the victory over Elejamie before the tournament and to this clear success against Hannasea. And so does double scorer Baldur Hejman, who stated that the team's spirit is really good and everyone is ready for the match against Nova Anglicana. He has agreed that the team needs to start out good and try scoring an early goal again, like they did today - and not get scared should they fall behind. The two only unbeaten teams of the Skinners and Tailor's group meet for the first time in their history, and they will do so tomorrow at 11:00 Ficiscian time. A Bad start for the Reprezentacja Pruski

Prusy Krolewskie lost the first game 1-0 against Islana Lunigo. The Reprezentacja Pruski led in puck possession but Islana Lunigo's goalie was sensational with blocking all 22 shots from Prusy Krolewskie. Islana Lunigo scored the only goal of the game with 4:28 remaining in the 1st period when 1st line left defenseman's shot was tipped into the net by 1st line right wing. Grzegorz Grzegorczyk couldn't do anything on it.

Prusy Krolewskie lost the second game 2-1 against #10 ranked Abanhfleft. A lot of fans from Prusy Krolewskie and Abanhfleft travelled to Hannasea for the tournament and there was almost no locals attending the game. With 12:37 remaining in the first period Emilia Zyskowska carry the puck into the opposite zone, she skates and skates, she goes behind the net and skates again, she gets back at the blue line. Abanhfleft tries to steal her the puck but they can't. She passes the puck to her twin sister Melania Zyskowska. Melania Zyskowska skates with the puck, she goes behind the net and she skates again, she's now at the blue line. Abanhfleft tries to steal the puck. Well they did. Cristobal Rosenberg stole her the puck and he's on a breakaway, he tries to beat the goalie, but Grzegorz Grzegorczyk stops him. The first period ends with a score of 0-0.

With 14:41 remaining in the 2nd period, Jaroslaw Jastrzebski skates with the puck and Roger Mendelson boards him. Jaroslaw Jastrzebski is down on the ice. Roger Mendelson gets 5 minutes for boarding and a game misconduct. Jaroslaw Jastrzebski leaves the ice on a stretcher. During the 5 minutes power play, with 11:11 remaining, Czeslaw Niemczynowicz skates with the puck, he skates and goes behind the net. He passes to Pawel Burzynski who'se in front of the net. Pawel Burzynski shoots and scores, Prusy Krolewskie leads 1-0 against Abanhfleft. Abanhfleft strikes back with 8:35 remaining when Woodrow Calcagno is on a two on one with Ted Kawakami. Calcagno passes the puck to Kawakami, Szymon Krzysztalowicz can't block the pass, Ted Kawakami shoots and scores, the game is tied again and the 2nd period ends with a 1-1 draw.

Abanhfleft is dominating the third period but Grzegorz Grzegorczyk stops everything. Well almost everything, with less than 10 minutes remaining, Doug Chavez carries the puck into the Pruski zone and passes it to Jacques Ruston. Ruston shoots but Grzegorz Grzegorczyk makes the save, he doesn't controls the puck and Wolfgang Wozniakowski tries to clear it, however Kelly Hughes intercepts the puck and shoots it on the net. Once again Grzegorz Grzegorczyk stops it but doesn't controls the puck. Nicolas DiPaolo is standing in front of the net and tries to put the lose puck into the net but Grzegorz Grzegorczyk stops him. Nicolas DiPaolo tries again, Grzegorz Grzegorczyk doesn't stops him and the puck is into the net. Abanhfleft is leading 2-1 and this is the final score. At the end of the 3rd period, some Fleftic fans were taunting some Pruski fans and it ended in a fan brawl into the stands. 12 Fleftic fans and 10 Pruski fans were arrested. 3 Fleftic fans and 4 Pruski fans have been sent to the nearest hospital.

Jaroslaw Jastrzebski's injury isn't as serious as expected and he'll miss two matchdays. Prusy Krolewskie plays against Unified Sunrise Islands on matchday 3 and have a rest day on matchday 4, so Jaroslaw Jastrzebski will only miss one game. Slawomir Zawistowski will move from line 4 to line 3 and Mariusz Wisniewski will replace Slawomir Zawistowski on line 4.

Boxscore

RP: The first game was started with Jarkovic in net. Of course given this, the strategy for the second game in group play is to start Martin Bishop-Kanas. His wife is a premier defensewoman and most female players in the Serbian Empire play on the blue line and float as a 4th forward at times. Centers and goalies are almost never female but for different reasons.

Centers in the Serbian game are responsible for screening shots in front of the goalie and given the frequent combo of defensive pairings, most teams utilize a female offensive blue liner and a particularly imposing male one who can push a center out of position if not outright check them. Goalies due to the size of the pads are rarely female not due to strength but due to women of adequate height often being better suited for basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, or blue-line duties if they're strong enough with the puck skills. Once you've weeded those candidates out, you have few women who are both tall enough to be goalies, skilled enough at skating, and lack the offensive firepower to be wingers or blue liners.

"Good Evening to BNC Nightly News, I'm Harold Johnson filling in for Jane Gaoren tonight. Tonight we begin with tragedy at the World Cup of Hockey after a couple people were killed by some of the players on Gregoryisgodistan. Reports coming out of Hannasea confirms that 5 are dead after provoking outrage by holding banners saying that Greg, who is the supreme leader and worshiped by millions of Gregoryisgodistani citizens, is not God. With more on the story, we will go to sports reporter Jack Vergarden."

"With the World Cup of Hockey in full action, Beaverriver lost five its own today watching their own country play against Gregoryisgodistan. During the first few minutes of the first period, Enemy Crusher Bigward McFooples jumped out of the arena and killed several spectators which includes five from Beaverriver. Some of the Beaverriverian fans were shocked afterwards as they described the incident as horrifying and gruesome. One fan in particular says that they won't attend any other game just to keep them safe. Prime Minister Elizabeth Melks released a statement earlier stating that 'the country is lost for words about today's incident' and that 'the government regrets not sending warnings to citizens traveling for the World Cup of Hockey about the possibility of an incident like this to happen.'

However, the players and officials were not too perturbed by the incident as Gregoryisgodistan teams has had numerous incidents like these in the past including one like this in their last game against Tumbra. The players continue play, allowing a goal by Slave Beater NDNSHYQ19 with 7:35 left in the first period. The team fought against the Ice Slaves and timid referees and had numerous of chances including one made by Carla Van Kanne which reflected off the crossbar. Ultimately, the Ice Slaves held the score to the end of the game, resulting in a 1-0 defeat for the Ice Beavers. The Ice Beavers take on the Ice Lions of Tumbra in their next game."

"Thank you Jack. You can go to bncsports.bvr to follow the Ice Beavers progress in the World Cup of Hockey in Hannasea."

"... Day two of the World Cup of Hockey, so now we go over to John Daverson with the sport. John?"

That's right, Steve! Good morning, Elejamie! The Icy Elephants grabbed another victory over in Upper Niedewe as they shut out the Greater Vakolicci Haven 3-0. Elejamie, hot off the heels of their 4-1 opening victory against Cosumar, were the favourites going into the match. However, the Greater Vakolicci Haven didn't go down so easy, having moments when they put Elejamie on the ropes. In the end, the Icy Elephants reigned supreme to make it two games out of two. As always, here are the highlights:

The first period got off to a slow start, as it took a couple of minutes for the first shot on target - a wrist shot from Stacy Saunders that was just saved. However, shortly after the face-off, Paul Morton received a two minute minor for roughing a Vakolicci defender. In fact, it wasn't until halfway through the period when we saw the first fight of the night, between Francisco Solano and a Vakolicci left winger - a fight easily won by Solano in just a few punches. Not long later, he was joined in the box by Lupe, who received a two minute minor for clipping. That being said, it wasn't all penalties. For example, Anatoly Kasputin very nearly scored with this beautiful slap shot which just hit the post, which Franny Solano's rebound shot being saved. However, despite several good chances by both sides, the first period was a goalless affair.

The second period was, thankfully, a more eventful period. Five minutes after the start, Elejamie actually managed to score the first goal of the night, with Anatoly Kasputin knocking it in after Cerin Meloten's shot bounced off the goalie's stick. In fact, Meloten would actually score goal number two shortly afterwards, intercepting a pass and hitting it into the top right corner of the net. In fact, there was very nearly a third goal in the period - this time from the Vakoliccis - although it has to be disallowed when it was revealed that the player who scored it was offside. Indeed, things went from bad to worse when one of their players had to be sent to the box for two minutes for boarding Lupe. Fortunately for them, Elejamie were unable to net the puck and, at the end of the period, the score was 2-0 to Elejamie.

The third period saw things wind down a little bit. Three minutes after the start of the period, another fight broke out, this time between George Lincoln and a Vakolicci defender, with the linesmen breaking the two up and sending them to the box. Shortly afterwards, Elejamie saw another advantage when the Vakolicci team received a bench minor for too many men on the ice. And, halfway through the period, Felipe Barajas received a two minute minor for interference. However, it wasn't all penalties. With three and a half minutes left, James Han, assisted by Danilo Barajas and Mike Cruickshank, scored the third and final goal of the night, with a well-timed wrist shot that left the Vakolicci goalie with no chance to save it. Although Elejamie had plenty of chances to score when a) a Vakolicci player was sent to the box for two minutes due to goaltender interference and b) The Vakolicci coach eventually pulled the goalie for an extra attacker, they were unable to put the puck in the net and, eventually, the match ended 3-0 to Elejamie.

In a post-match interview, head coach Michael Madgwick said "We had a couple of problems to begin with, namely several shots just not hitting the target. But I had a talk with the boys and we managed to turn things round in our favour in the second. A great bunch of goals from Anatoly, Cerin and Morty. A great couple of fights from Franny and George. And well done to Toni who was like a brick wall out there, keeping the puck out of our net like it was no big deal. Overall, really pleased with the result, well done."

"Any plans going into your next match against Anthor?"

"I'm not particularly worried. We've already taken down the hardest team this group has to offer and I'm sure that we could handle Anthor easily. That being said and if I read those pre-season friendly results properly, they're showing some signs of improvement, so this could easily be a tight game. But I'm still going with my gut and saying that we'll take this one."

In the other Guild of Pepperers Group match of the day, Anthor kicked off their World Cup of Hockey campaign with a 1-1 draw against Tobiasia. Indeed, after two games, Elejamie and Tobiasia still retain the top two spots in the group, with 6 and 4 points respectively. Anthor are third with a single point and Cosumar and the Greater Vakolicci Haven are in fourth and fifth, with the Ice Dragons just ahead on goal difference. So, tonight, Tobiasia will have their bye day, Cosumar will return refreshed as they take on the Greater Vakolicci Haven and the Icy Elephants will see if they can make it three wins out of three when they play Anthor. Will we be able to pull it off? Find out tonight on Puck Drop!

Meanwhile, over in the Guild of Skinners and Tailors Group, Ficiscia got their World Cup of Hockey campaign off to a great start when they thrashed the hosts 6-1. Hannasea, who were still reeling from a narrow 1-0 loss to Mercedini the night before, now sit at the bottom of their group with one goal for and seven goals against...
