I hope so too. Turkey is useful but we need to have limits. We cannot keep bending over backwards for Erdogan. And of course Merkel would fold. It sounds like Obama wants to fold but legally cannot. Gulen no doubt has good lawyers who can tie up any extradition attempt if not kill it altogether.

Then the big question of course is: What happens if, for whatever reason, Obama doesn't fold?
How willing would Erdogan be to escalate further? Not necessarily directly towards the US, but rather towards the EU to put pressure on the US. He's got a lot of vocal and aggressive support especially here in Germany... See the reaction regarding the Armenia resolution in the Bundestag.

Well it looks like Obama already folded, but that this is out of his hands. The US has an independent judiciary Obama cannot control.

How will Erdogan react to that? He will not be able to pressure judges like he does Obama. Will Erdogan just not get it and escalate anyway? How far will he go? Interesting questions indeed. What worries me is Erdogan does not know when to stop, does not understand moderation nor diplomacy. He thinks he can just order and everyone most obey his extreme holiness.

Because Erdogan is not rational he is very hard to predict.

We are not going to take any action against Turkey whatsoever. To do so would require leadership that was both strong and smart. It would take strength and delicacy.
