Benelux Politics: MEGATHREAD

Postby Amleria » Thu Jul 07, 2016 12:57 pm

I never saw a thread which talked about the Dutch, Belgian or Luxemburg politics.

So, here it is. :)

Do you think the Dutch could leave the EU? I'm not Dutch, nor do I know too much about politics in the Netherlands, but does it seem likely to people living there?

Hmm, maby. But I don't think Prime minister Rutten would like to start a referendum.
I'm Belgian, and also people here want a referendum for a so called Bexit.
But I don't think here is a political climate to leave the EU, neither in The Netherlands.

I'm Pro Europe, but I think the EU should reform as soon as possible.

Indeed. Because otherwise, the continent would become very instable.
Certainly with that right nationalism and rascim these days...
War would become possible. Certainly in Central Europe and the Balkan.

I seriously doubt any western or northern european countries will leave. Yes, those nationalistic parties are the largest in Denmark and (likely soon) the Netherlands, but they still don't have a majority and would probably use their largest party status for other ends. Namely, influencing general policy towards a more nationalistic direction.

This is what Denmark has already done. Culturally, the Nordic countries aren't all that different, but look how Denmark vs. Sweden behaved during the migrant crisis. Sweden, led by a left leaning pro-EU party was the second preference (after Germany) for many refugees. Denmark, on the other hand, who is partially ruled by the nationalist party, placed ads in Lebanese newspapers to warn migrants that benefits have been reduced, in order to deter arrivals from coming there.

Oh. Well, I stand with my statement.
PVV isn't too bad except for their hardline on Islamic practices of objectionable nature, and the head scarf, and their apparent opposition to fiscal greening, to be honest. I just hope they carry through with the majority of their policies.

So according to established political knowledge now, PVV should come first in the next Dutch elections, and will probably prop up a VVD and associates government in a confidence and supply agreement.

Belgium is... Going to be Belgium. The right will win in Flanders, with two thirds of the vote, and Vlaams Belang should reclaim its lost voters from N-VA now that N-VA has been in government and proven to be not right/radical-right/Flemish enough. The PS should still come first in Wallonia, but that new communist party is going to make a breakthrough, so Wallonia will vote 2/3 for the left.
Brussels will be Brussels. Honestly they might as well vote in an Islamo-Euro party now.
So, honestly, Belgium is going to face another crisis to form a government. I don't believe it's going to break up, but I dread the day, as Wallonia will not be capable to survive alone and will probably need to join France, and we have enough problems as it is. Also, we don't want Brussels. But yet again, Belgium being a fake nation, it's probably for the better that it shatter.

Luxembourg is doing fine. The CSP might return to government -I'm not sure, and business as usual. Frankly, we should embargo that tax haven, but that's neither here nor there.

So all in all, chaos in 2 out of the 3 Benelux members and exciting times ahead.
French citizen. Still a Socialist Party member. Ségolène Royal 2019, I guess Actually I might vote la France Insoumise.

Because it is stealing our taxes. Although on that note, there are certain other countries in the EU that are less than loyal to their partners too.

It is not. If you choose to have high taxes people will try to avoid paying. Lower taxes or increase enforcement and punish people who pay no taxes harder.

Or punish EU member States who siphon off other EU member States' taxes.

There is no majority for splitting up Belgium in Flanders. I thought only 15% of the Flemish people want an independent Flanders.
Belgium is fake, if you would like to call it fake. But so is the US and Flanders itself.
Flanders is only West and East Flanders. Brabant (Flemish Brabant + Prov. of Antwerp) and Limburg are not Flanders.
If you want to split Belgium properly and historic correct, you should split it in 6 parts.
But if Belgium would split, and I would regret that.
Also Wallonia would split up in 3 parts; You have 'Liberal Wallonia' in Namur and Brabant Wallon, they would consider to create a stronger diplomatic alliance with Flanders, maby a Confederacy. You also have the 'Catholic Wallonia' in Luxemburg and German Belgium. (Luxemburg and German Belgium would unite with the Grand Duchy again then, I suppose).
And then you have 'Socialist Wallonia' in Liège and Hainault, they would consider to join France.

I understand why you like them. They also have a good European policy, mostly on Social affairs.
I vote center-left (and maby liberal in some ways), like SP.A in the national elections.
But I vote Liberal for the EU Elections, because I think a stronger Europe is better...
