The Cheeseekau Class Nuclear Powered Ballistic Missile Submarine is yet another Export venture by the Philadelphia Shipbuilding Corporation, building on the tremendous export success of the Tecumseh Class Diesel-Electric Attack Submarine and the Tenskwatawa Class Nuclear Fast Attack Submarine, both of which received hundreds of foreign orders. The Cheeseekau Class was based off of the Ohio Classes hull, with tremendous improvements in terms of stealth systems from classes such as the American Seawolf and the Tenskwatawa Class, both of which are Nuclear Powered Fast Attack Submarines, and the Williamson Class Nuclear Missile Submarine, which is the sole ballistic missile submarine in use with the Pennsylvanian Navy today.

Armament & Electronics

The Cheeseekau Class’s main armament is its eight 660mm torpedo tubes, capable of firing weapons ranging from Torpedos, like the Mk48 ADCAP, to Anti-shipping missiles such as the UGM-84 Harpoon and the UGM-109 Tomahawk, as well as mines. Alongside of the submarines eight torpedo tubes, there are twenty-four Vertical Launch Tubes along the back of the submarine, just behind the sail. Each of these tubes are 3.4m in diameter, designed to take Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles such as the American Trident II, or the Pennsylvanian designed UGM-210 “Barracuda” and UGM-240 “Barracuda II”.

The electronics on the submarine are largely the same as found some Pennsylvanian Navy submarines, such as the Williamson Class Nuclear Missile Submarine (SSMN). This includes the same Photonic Mast and the same Sonar Systems, and a similar, but somewhat more compact version of the Radar mast, with a shorter effective range, accounting for the significant difference in size between the Williamson Class and the Tecumseh Class.

The vessel does not utilize a conventional periscope for the Captain or other officers to use in order to identify a vessel. It instead utilizes a Photonic Mast to transmit a digital image of the target from the Mast to a series of High Definition monitors around the control room of the submarine.

A photonics mast (or optronic mast) is a sensor similar in concept to a submarine periscope, except that it doesn't require a periscope tube thus freeing design space during construction and limiting risks of water leakage in the event of damage. A photonics mast replaces the mechanical; line-of-sight viewing system with digital equipment, similar to a digital camera array, and it has fewer locational and dimensional constraints than a traditional periscope.

Unlike a periscope, it need not be located directly above its user, and it requires only a small pressure hull penetration for cabling. This allows the photonics mast to be contained entirely within the sail of the submarine and means the control room need not be placed directly below the sail.

A photonics mast operates by rising above the water similarly to a telescoping car antenna and provides information through an array of sensors, such as high definition low-light and thermo graphic cameras. Images and information can be sent to display panels for analysis. The photonics mast can also support the navigation, electronic warfare, and communications functions of a conventional optical periscope mast.

The submarine utilizes a bow mounted Active and Passive Sonar system as well as a passive cable towed array system, located on the starboard side of the submarine amidships. The Towed arrays cable is almost a kilometer long, allowing it to get clear of noise from the submarine, and to detect other submarines or even surface ships from long distances. The systems are sensitive enough to pick up sounds more than 500km away, though, at these distances, accuracy is anything but good.

Propulsion & Hull

The propulsion of the Cheeseekau Class is in its SSBN10R Pressurized Water Reactor, based off of the S9G of the American Virginia Class, and, in some extent, the S6W of the American Seawolf class attack submarines. As a result, the Reactor is capable of pushing the submarine at speeds up to 16 knots while remaining silent, in large part to not only the reactor, but also to the hull design, and the thick coat of anechoic rubber on the outer hull, which, by itself, is capable of reducing the noise output by the submarine anywhere from 4% to 14%. Coupled with the other stealth precautions taken in the design of the submarine, this results in the submarine being quieter at 16 knots than some previous Nuclear Fast Attack Submarines were tied up to a pier.

The submarines hull is constructed primarily out of HY-130 steel, contrary to many designs, which used a lot of Titanium in their design, like the Tecumseh Class Diesel Electric Attack Submarine. HY-130 steel is a very high strength material, originally destined for use in the Seawolf Class Nuclear Fast Attack Submarine. However, the Seawolf ended up instead being constructed of HY-100 steel, instead of HY-130.

The classes hull is further divided into 4 compartments, Forward, which comprises the Submarines Torpedo Room and Bunking, Control, which is made up of the Sonar Room and Control Room, Missile, which contains the Vertical Launch Tubes and related systems, and Engineering, which is made up of everything related to the Nuclear Reactor.

Communication Systems

The Cheeseekau Classhas a multitude of communications equipment available on it, ranging from Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) and Very Low Frequency (VLF), to satellite equipment for communications through regular Military Communications Satellites.

Electromagnetic waves in the ELF frequency range (3–3000 Hz) can travel through the oceans and reach submarines anywhere. Building an ELF transmitter is a formidable challenge, as they have to work at incredibly long wavelengths: The US Navy's system operated at 76 hertz, the Soviet/Russian system at 82 hertz. The latter corresponds to a wavelength of 3658.5 kilometers. Obviously, the usual half-wavelength dipole antenna cannot be constructed, as it would spread across a large country.

Instead, one has to find an area with very low ground conductivity (a requirement opposite to usual radio transmitter sites), bury two huge electrodes in the ground at different sites, and then feed lines to them from a station in the middle, in the form of wires on poles. Although other separations are possible, 60 kilometers is the distance used by the ZEVS transmitter located near Murmansk. As the ground conductivity is poor, the current between the electrodes will penetrate deep into the Earth, essentially using a large part of the globe as antenna. The antenna length in Republic, Michigan was approximately 52 kilometers (32 miles). The antenna is very inefficient. To drive it, a dedicated power plant seems to be required, although the power emitted as radiation is only a few watts. Its transmission can be received virtually anywhere.

ELF Transmission

The Extremely low frequency transmission employed was a 64-ary Reed-Solomon, meaning that the alphabet had 64 symbols, each represented by a very long pseudo-random sequence. The entire transmission was then encrypted. The advantages of such a technique are that by correlating multiple transmissions, a message could be completed even with very low signal-to-noise ratios, and because only a very few pseudo-random sequences represented actual message characters, there was a very high probability that if a message was successfully received, it was a valid message (anti-spoofing).
The communication link is one-way. No submarine could have its own ELF transmitter on board, due to the sheer size of such a device. Attempts to design a transmitter which can be immersed in the sea or flown on an aircraft were soon abandoned.

Due to the limited bandwidth, information can only be transmitted very slowly, on the order of a few characters per minute. Thus it is reasonable to assume that the actual messages were mostly generic instructions or requests to establish a different form of two-way communication with the relevant authority.

VLF Transmission

VLF radio waves (3–30 kHz) can penetrate seawater to a depth of approximately 20 meters. Hence a submarine at shallow depth can use these frequencies. A vessel more deeply submerged might use a buoy on a long cable equipped with an antenna. The buoy rises to a few meters below the surface, and may be small enough to remain undetected by enemy sonar / radar.

Due to the low frequency, a VLF broadcast aerial needs to be quite big. In fact, broadcasting sites are usually a few square kilometers (or miles). This of course prevents such aerials being installed on submarines. Submarines only carry a VLF reception aerial, and do not respond on such low frequencies. So a ground-to-submarine VLF broadcast is always a one way broadcast, originating on the ground and received aboard the boat. If two-way communication is needed, the boat must surface and communicate on other, higher, frequencies (such as UHF or VHF).
This band allows for a roughly 300 bit/s transmission - or about 35 8-bit ASCII characters per second (or the equivalence of a sentence every two seconds) - a total of 450 words per minute. Simply shifting to 7-bit ASCII results in a baud rate (characters per second) increase of 14 percent. An additional shift to a 6-bit or a 5-bit code (such as the baudot code) would result in speeds of more than 600 and 700 words per minute. Moreover, as naval jargon is in most cases both very strict and very specific, it is likely to be repetitive and predictable. So a word like "OFFICER" might be broadcast as "OFF." or "OFF1" or simply "OFFI" for example. A word like "COMMANDER" might be spelled as "CMD" and in a similar fashion pairs of words such as "HIGH COMMAND" might be spelled as "HCMD". This kind of specialized naval spelling leads to a further significant reduction of bandwidth usage, allowing for an overall increase in data transmission rates.

Export

The Cheeseekau Class is only available to nations that are approved by the Pennsylvanian Federal Government. Any denials may be appealed, but usually are final.

Single Unit: $2.8 billion

Muscovy Class Supertanker

Type: Ultra-Large Crude Carrier
Displacement (Light): 105,276 tonnes
Displacement (Full): 790,756 tonnes
Length: (Overall): 500m
Beam: (Overall): 80m
Design Draught: 34m
Propulsion: 1x A1B Nuclear Reactor, 2x Steam Turbines, 2x Shafts
Power: 160,000 horsepower
Flank Speed: 19 knots
Cruise Speed: 16 knots
Range: Unlimited
Sensors: 1x PEC Scout Navigational Radar
Cargo: 685,480 Tonnes of Oil (Max)
Cost: $320mn

The Muscovy Class Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC) is the largest class of Supertanker in use and ever to be built by any company based in the Federal Republic of Pennsylvania. This class of vessel was directly based off of the hull of the TI Class Supertanker, which was the previous largest tanker ever used up until 2006, when the first Muscovy Class was launched and commissioned for use by InlandSeaOil Ltd., the largest Oil Company operating in the inland sea of Pennsylvania, too ship the crude oil that it exports to foreign nations for use there.

As of 2014, there are 26 Muscovy Class in use, with 4 more under construction. All by 7 of these vessels are operated by InlandSeaOil Ltd., as its primary Ultra Large Crude Carrier Class, replacing the previously used TI Class Tankers.

The propulsion of the Muscovy Class is provided for by a single A1B Pressurized Water Reactor, providing for 160,000 horsepower to be supplied to the ships 2 Propeller shafts through the vessels two Steam Turbines, allowing the ship to be propelled through the sea at up to 19 knots, with a cruise speed of 16 knots.

The vessels A1B Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) is the same reactor as found on multiple Pennsylvanian Naval Vessel Classes, namely the James Lawrence Class Supercarrier and the Cabot’s Peak Class Amphibious Assault Ship, as well as the John Sheppard Class Roll on Roll off prepositioning vessel, which is jointly used by the Navy and several Civilian Companies for the transportation of Vehicles, such as cars, trucks, or tanks when being used by the Navy.

The reactor is located just forward of the Superstructure, and is easily located by a dome that rises out of the deck. This dome is a cover for the rounded top of the Reactor Vessel, and is easily removable by a heavy duty crane, allowing relatively easy and fast refueling of the vessels reactor, allowing its turnaround times during refueling to be as fast as possible.

The Muscovy Class is a Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC), due to the fact that its maximum load of crude oil that it can carry is 685,480 tonnes of crude oil. This oil is divided up into 14 tanks spread throughout the ship from bow to stern. This total allows it to deliver an amount of crude oil at any one time equal to 4,915,184.29 barrels of oil to a destination.

John Sheppard Class Prepositioning Ship

Type: Roll On Roll Off Cargo Ship (RoRo)
Displacement (Max): 226,000 tonnes
Length: (Overall): 400m
Beam: (Overall): 45m
Design Draught: 20m
Propulsion: 1x A1B Nuclear Reactor
Power: 160,000 horsepower
Flank Speed: 24 knots
Cruise Speed: 18 knots
Range: Unlimited
Sensors: 1x PEC Scout Navigational Radar
Floor Area: 67,600m squared
Cost: $600mn

The John Sheppard class Pre-positioning Vessel is a Large, Medium Speed Roll on Roll off Vessel of the Pennsylvanian Military Sealift Command. The mission of this class of ship is to provide transportation of Vehicles for the Pennsylvanian Armed Forces, such as MCA-7E&H Main Battle Tanks, LY7/4072 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, LY7/366 Self Propelled Artillery Pieces, HUV-24, 26, and 28 Trucks, and other vehicles of the Pennsylvanian Armed forces.

With its total floor area of 67,600m squared, the ship, if it were to embark with just MCA-7E Main Battle Tanks, could carry over 1,500 such tanks, or, it could carry a full Armored Divisions of Equipment anywhere in the world.

Given the design of the vessel, it is not capable of offloading directly onto a beach, but instead has to use a friendly controlled harbor to offload its vehicles directly onto a prepared pier. While this acts to limit its ability to offload vehicles, the speed with which it can do it however makes up for it, being able to fully offload the vehicles onboard it within a few days time of it starting when it moves at the fastest speed its crew can.

In addition to its large amount of vehicle storage, on its top deck, the ships have room for container storage, allowing the vessel to carry ammo and fuel for the vehicles onboard as well, allowing it to offload limited amounts of the equipment needed to operate the vehicles that it carries.

Despite the Class having been initially built for use as a prepositioning vessel by the Navy, and to transport heavy armored units in large numbers to friendly ports for whatever need there may be, following the “Civil use Act”, passed by congress, which allowed the Armed Forces to rent out certain equipment, such as the use of its Cargo Ships, Tankers, Prepositioning Vessels, Strategic and Tactical Airlifters, All Terrain Vehicles, Trucks, and, in certain cases, Small Arms, for use by the Civilian populace in acts such as touring the rough mountain range on Columbia Island, or for transportation of goods using the Airlifters and Cargo Ships, provided a alternate form of income for the various branches of the Armed Forces.

After this, the use and construction of John Sheppard Class vessels intensified, since their size and their relatively high speed made for them to be popular with certain Civilian Companies, despite their rather high costs.
In other words, conservatives are generous with their own money, and liberals are generous with other peoples money.

Mk80 Heavyweight Submarine Fired torpedo

Role: Long Range Heavyweight Torpedo
Length: 7m
Diameter: 660mm
Weight: 3000kg
Guidance/Target Aquisition:
PEC-9 Active/Passive Sonar
WAKO Wake-Homing System
Propulsion:
Sundstrand gas-turbine with Pump-jet
Depth: < 850m
Speed: 20 knots slow; 80 knots fast
Range: 27km @ 80 knots, 70km @ 20 knots
Warhead: 300kg
Cost: $4mn (Single Unit) $400bn (DPRs)

The Mk80 Heavyweight Submarine fired torpedo is a 660mm (26inch) diameter, 7m long, 3,000kg torpedo, used by the Pennsylvanian Navy in all of their submarines. The Heavyweight Torpedo is designed to be a fast, deep diving, and long range torpedo intended to be launched from submarines against both other submarines and surface ships.

The Mk80 uses a highly advanced Active/Passive Sonar with a Wire Guidance system, allowing the torpedo to be, if needed, directly steered from the control room of the submarine that fired it. Along with this, if need, the Mk80 can be fired, and be used to scout far ahead of the submarine using its Active and Passive Sonar systems onboard. This ability is limited only by the torpedoes wire length, which is 12km long per torpedo, or, if needed, before the torpedo is loaded into the tube, an additional section of wire could be potentially added, further increasing the maximum range of the torpedo on the wire if needed. The torpedo can also use a Wake Homing System, if so desired, which allows the torpedo to follow the wake created by a Surface ship, in order to target and sink said ship.

The torpedo has 2 detonation methods, which are Contact and Magnetic Pistol. The Contact fuse is the simplest, in which the torpedo detonates by having the forward part of the torpedo make contact with the target, detonating the Warhead. The Magnetic Pistol Fuse is used to allow the torpedo to detonated underneath a surface ship, or to detonate near a submarine.

The torpedo is propelled using a Gas-Turbine engine with a Pumpjet, enabling the torpedo to travel at very high speeds.

Role: Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile
Length: 18m
Diameter: 3.4m
Weight: 150,000 Kg
Warhead: W-88 MIRV or 15 Megaton W-500
Stages: 3
Speed:Up to 9 km/s
Ceiling: 1100 km
Range: 81 km - 16,000 km
Flight Profile: Quasiballistic SLBM
Guidance: Astro-Inertial, with Star-Sighting, GPS.
Propulsion: Solid fueled first, second and third stage rocket
Penetration Capabilities: Hard-Target
Ideal Target: Cities, Military Installations, other Fixed targets
Hit Percentage: 98%
Site Set-up: Submarine
Cost: $210mn (Single Unit) $2.1 trillion (DPRs)
Variants:

UGM-240 "Barracuda II"-14 W-88 475 Kt Warheads with 60 Penetration Aids.
UGM-240B “Barracuda II Bravo”-1x 15 Mt Warhead and 30 Penetration Aids

The UGM-240 “Barracuda II” is a Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile designed to replace the UGM-210 “Barracuda” SLBM, following the design of the new Williamson Class Nuclear Missile Submarine, intended to replace the vessels of the older Siberia Class. The UGM-240 is directly designed to take advantage of the massive increase in overall size in the Williamson Classes Missile tubes over the previous Siberia Classes Tubes. The result was a difference in diameter of nearly 1m, and a difference in height of 4m. This allowed not only a great deal more fuel, but also a great deal more room for more Warheads and Decoys. This resulted in a range increase of more than 2,400km to the maximum, addition of more than 40 more Penetration Aids, or Decoys, and 2 more Warheads of the W-88 type.

The Guidance system onboard the missile are still the same as on the previous UGM-210, resulting in the same degree of accuracy, a roughly 98% hit rate during testing.

The penetration aids onboard the UGM-240 consists of up to 60 Mylar Balloons, similar to those found in the British Chevaline upgrade to the Polaris Ballistic Missile. The Decoys consist of mylar balloons that can be inflated in space and are designed to have the same radar characteristics as the warhead. Because the warhead and the decoy balloons may be at different temperatures the warhead and the balloons may both be surrounded by heated shrouds that put them all at the same temperature. This defeats attempts to discriminate between decoys and warheads on the basis of temperature, which can confuse an enemy's missile defense systems. The Decoys also carry Radar jammers themselves, allowing the Warheads to have a even higher ability to evade Anti-Ballistic Missile Systems, by jamming the Radars of such systems on the war down. The final penetration aid deployed on the UGM-240 is the inclusion of Low Observable technology built into the MIRV Bus, making it more resilient to detection by search radars.

In 1971, the first Victory Class LHD rolled off of the slip and into the ocean, and with it, a new era in Pennsylvanian Navy Force Projection. The Victory Class had been designed with an idea that all the roles of different vessels, LPD, LHD, LHA and most others, into a single vessel class. While this concept would eventually prove to be somewhat flawed, during the classes first combat operations in the 1980s, fighting against Constans during numerous landing operations conducted by the Pennsylvanian Marine Corps to regain lost territory. While the class would end up proving its worth during this war, by 2006 the class was becoming increasingly obsolete, and upgrading to the new Pennsylvanian Navy Standards of the new decade, due to its relatively small size and already cramped interior. Between 2004 and 2006, several designs were submitted for a new class of Landing Ship, a Large, and Dedicated Landing Helicopter Dock. One was eventually chosen. The design was based off of the recently Commissioned James Lawrence Class Supercarrier, though on a smaller scale, and with a different overall hull design, to allow the ship to act as a dedicated LHD.

The ship incorporates a 25mx100m well deck space, plus some room for 4 LCACs in the aft part of the ship. This gives the vessel 2500 square meters of deck space for Vehicles, Supplies, or other things. On top of this, the aircraft features enough housing for up to 6,000 Combat Troops, a Pennsylvanian Army and Marine Brigade, plus 20 AV-8B Vertical Takeoff or Landing Fighters, and 25 UH-1Y sized Transport and Anti-Submarine Warfare Helicopters.

The Ship regularly embarks with 20 F-35Bs and 25 UH-1Ys. The F-35B is a American designed, Low Observable VTOL/STOL Fighter aircraft, incorporating a Forward Swept Wing to improve handling at lower speeds, and to give it a edge in a dogfight. This aircraft is the primary long distance strike arm of the Cabot’s Peak Class, usually taking aloft with Heavy amounts of Air to Ground Munitions, in order to provide support for troops going ashore or fighting inland, while allowing the Carrier Aircraft covering the Ship to handle Air Superiority and Deep Strike Operations, using their Larger, longer ranged F/A-18E/Fs and F-35Cs. The Helicopters used onboard the Ships are helicopters roughly the size of the UH-1Y.

The first vessel of the class began construction in 2007, and was completed in 2008, and delivered to the navy later that year. The Navy was highly impressed with the vessel, and immediately placed a order for enough of the vessels to replace all of its currently in commission Victory Class Landing Ships. It was decided that 11 more would be built by mid 2010, and than 12 would be completed every 2 years after that.

At present, our nation has no needs for new weapons, our requirements already being fullfilled by suppliers such as Sumer, Lyras, Lamoni and others. Therefore, we must decline your offer, as not only would it put Philadelphia Shipbuilding Corporation into the Red, but it would offer no true advantages. We must therefore decline your offer.

We have received your request for 8 Cheeseekau Class, and regret to inform you that, for the moment ,your request has been suspended, do to a lack of funds in your Armed Forces Budget ($18bn out of $22.4bn required). Please advise if you wish to proceed with a payment plan. We would like to offer a $2.8bn per year payment plan, wherein we will deliver 1 submarine per year, in exchange for the cost of one submarine per year. While this would mean that it would take 8 years to complete your order. We feel that this plan will best suit your current state. We hope that we can work out a deal. Godspeed.

Due to a recent major influx of capital from sales of Uranium we are able to cover the one time cost of the requested units in total with a one time payment.

For safety reasons, we will need proof as to these Uranium sales.

To remain in compliance with our national nondisclosure laws we are unable to disclose anything highly detailed. With that in mind we will simply proceed with the purchase of the single SSBN in the hope we can later come to a further agreement.

We have received your request for Domestic Production Rights to the Cheeseekau Class Nuclear Ballistic Missile Submarine (SSBN), the UGM-240 "Barracuda II" Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM), and the Mk80 Heavyweight Submarine Fired Torpedo. As normal, we would be glad to provide such a great ally of our nation with this equipment, and at a slight discount. Instead of the normal price for these materials, we will instead be charging you just $5tn overall. Pending arrival of payment, we will immediately transfer all relevant information, and offer to send over personal, and pick up any slack in production until you are able to produce everything you need for yourself. If you have any further Queries or requests, feel free to lodge them, and we will do our utmost to answer or achieve them. Godspeed, and good luck.

From Naval High Command to the Philadelphia Shipbuilding Corporation
Official Communique

The Republic of Gavnia is an upstart nation with an upstart economy founded on a former ruined nation. Our navy mainly consists of small patrol craft. We would like to order four Tecumseh Class Diesel Electric Attack Submarines to begin commissioning larger vessels. Payment plans will need to be negotiated due to the current state of our economy.

We have received your request for 4 Tecumseh Class Diesel Electric Attack Submarines, as well as a wish for negotiations to be held regarding a payment plan. We have decided that, in order to save time, we will build the submarines and hand them over to your country, while you repay at your own will. We hope that is solution is acceptable to your nation. If it is, we will begin immediate production, and will have the 4 vessels delivered to your nation by the end of the year. Thank you for Choosing Philadelphia Shipbuilding Corporation. Godspeed, and good luck.
