Welp.

Iceland is really the only country that fared even remotely well. Sweden is down to twenty thousand people, from a pre-plague population of 9 million, and Norway/Denmark/Finland are down to a little over 10,000 each from a pre-plague population of about five million each.

Everywhere else (in Northern Europe) has basically been a total loss. There might be survivors somewhere not Europe, but if there are, the Known World doesn't have any contact with them.

Question, is the cat thing a joke, or are they really popular pets in SSSS to the point that almost everybody has one?

Character Application

Name: Kallm Uisce. (Ish-keh)

Age: 19.

Nationality: Of Irish descent, but born and raised in Luleå, in the far north of Sweden. Basically, when Sweden initiated quarantine, a large, wealthy Irish family was in the country for a wedding. They never left, and many, many years later Kallm was born to some of the direct descendants. Although technically, the Uisce family are Swedish, considering their ancestors have lived there for several generations, they are very proud of their heritage. In fact, their second name is taken from one of the few words in Irish that their ancestors remembered, meaning water. (Irish is actually a second language, and not a popular one unless national pride is involved, so they didn't remember much apart from a few phrases and random words.)

Location of Current Residence: Nowhere, really. He's moving to Rønne, and his family lives in Luleå.

Reason for Boarding the Sveavägen Railway: Kallm spent his entire life in Luleå, and it was a nice place and all, but Kallm has always wanted to see the world. He wanted to be an explorer; to go out into the silent world and learn about the world's past. His ultimate mission is to mount an expedition to Dublin, where his ancestors were from, and learn more about Ireland and Irish culture. To do that, first he needs to make a name for himself, and also to get somewhere close-ish to Ireland.

Okay, well, not close, but closer.

His current plan is to sail from Rønne around Scotland and down to Ireland. Yeah, detailed, I know.

He's a bit of a dreamer. Anyway, he doesn't have much money on him at the moment and it was slightly cheaper to take the train, so here he is.

Yay?

Biography: Kallm was born to Sirshe Doras (door in Irish. They didn't remember many Irish words, okay?) and Aidøn Uisce in the city of Luleå. They had a pretty average life, the city was fairly safe, all things considered and Aidøn made good money working in the Luleå Ironworks, so the family always had enough. A good friend of the family was the captain of a large exploration vessel. The vessel would sail around the coastlines of the world, making maps and reporting anything interesting, such as possible settlement sights and areas ripe with plunder. Of course, ninety percent of their jobs were a lot more simple: deliver this, deliver that, but Kallm kind of tuned out all that stuff. He cared about the exploration!

Now, Kallm thought that this guy was just the coolest, and from an early age, Kallm became obsessed with the idea of going out and exploring, reclaiming lost land and learning about the old world. He did pretty well in school, particularly in Swedish and History, taking a great interest in writing and learning about the past. After graduating, he worked in the Luleå Ironworks like his father for a while, but he just couldn't get into it. He just had the feeling that there was more out there for him. One night, after a particularly terrible day(He burnt his forehead pretty badly after a nasty accident) Kallm decided he wasn't just going to be another worker in the Ironworks. He was going to go and explore the world, learn about his past and help reclaim the old world.

And so, he gathered what money he had, any necessary papers, most of his belongings, the family cat, and set off for Rønne. He travelled by ship as far as Skutskär before realising he couldn't afford to go by ship all the way to Rønne. And so, he ended up taking a train to Mora, where he worked for a little while as a server in some restaurant until he had enough money pooled together to take the train to Rønne.

Items in Baggage:
  • Four changes of clothes.
  • One thick jacket.
  • One thick pair of gloves.
  • One woolly hat.
  • One pair of heavy rubber boots.
  • One powerful flashlight.
  • One Swiss-Army styled multi-tool, which has on it;
    • One small, serrated-edge knife.
    • A spork.
    • A screwdriver.
    • A scissors.
    • A can opener.
    • A little pull-out tweezers.
  • One flask full of tea.
  • One small container of sugar to go with above-mentioned tea.
  • Two tins of beans.
  • Three tins of tuna.
  • Six empty tins of tuna. (Cats!)
  • A "first aid kit" consisting of some band aids, cheap disinfectant and a half-used packet of baby wipes.
  • A ball of twine. Partially for tying stuff, mostly for the cat.
  • A deck of cards.
  • A lighter.
  • A pair of binoculars. Kallm thinks they were originally made for bird watching. This is because "Bird Spotter Pro" is printed on the side. Good detective work, Kallm. Keep at it.
  • Two pencils.
  • One eraser.
  • One pencil sharpener.
  • A large journal.
  • A map of the known world.
  • A battered old digital watch that he wears on his left hand, despite being left-handed.
  • An old sleeping bag. He used to have a tent, too, but SOMEBODY clawed it to bits when they ran out of tuna.

Appearance: Kallm stands at just over six feet. He is built lean, but fit.

His skin is tanned, despite him never going anywhere sunny, and long curly brown hair frames his head, often obscuring his eyes, which are a deep brown. His face is smooth with a small nose (he always says it's his best feature) and high cheekbones. His ears are fairly unremarkable and usually hidden behind curly hair. He noticeably only ever smiles with his mouth closed, because he thinks that he looks weird when he smiles with teeth. Despite his slim frame, he has wide shoulders. Kallm also has a bad burnmark on his upper left forehead, leaving the skin red and wrinkled, and leaving only a sliver of his left eyebrow. He's quite sensitive about the burn, and usually tries to hide it under his hair. He's also covered in scratches and claw marks. (Guess how he gets those!)

Language Capabilities: Speaks Swedish and a little bit of Icelandic, but not a lot. Enough to order food and ask for directions, not enough for reading prose. Also knows a few Irish phrases, but that's not really gonna help.

Cat: Oh yes. Kallm made sure to bring the family cat, Mr Vinyl* along with him. Mr. Vinyl is a very small, very ill-tempered four-year old European shorthair. He is a little smaller than your average cat, and his hair is a smooth, deep blue which takes a long time to settle after Mr Vinyl is startled/in a bad mood (which is nearly all the time). His eyes are a bright yellow, and his left ear is badly scratched. When he's in a bad mood, he is quite loud and often scratches at the nearest object (which is almost always Kallm). Mr Vinyl has a tendency to do what he wants, but after Kallm forced him through training in Mora, he scored just enough to be certified class B.

Mr Vinyl hates this.

Well, I mean one could assume he hates it. He does what he's asked and needs to do as a class B cat, but he seems to put as little effort in as possible, and if he is not rewarded with a treat (preferably tuna), Kallm can expect some bad scratching. Right now, Kallm and Mr. Vinyl have a sort of mutual understanding. Mr Vinyl is here by his own choosing, not because Kallm wants him to come. And, if he isn't treated with respect, he'll just leave, so he's fairly well treated, and a little spoilt.

Personality:Kallm is a charismatic and fun guy when he gets going, however his lack of experience in some social situations means he sometimes has to be coaxed out of his shell. Very submissive, Kallm is generally happy to follow other people's lead, though if he feels that something is wrong or whoever is in charge isn't pulling their weight, he won't hesitate to speak out. A pacifist, Kallm will always try to find the peaceful solution, and finds himself caring about people a lot more than he should. When he gets angry, he can be blunt and vocal about his anger, but usually it is not long lasting and if he doesn't get over it immediately, he usually just simmers quietly to himself.

Doesn't drink, smoke or take any kind of narcotics.

Other Information: He's flexible and bisexual. Both very much related.

*Because he's prone to scratching.

Character Application

Name: Samuel Väyrynen
Age: 20
Nationality: Swedish and finnish, although primarily the first one.
Location of Current Residence: Malung military base, south west of Mora.
Reason for Boarding the Sveavägen Railway: Delivering a message in Denmark, taking the quicker route.

Biography: Samuel was born in a poor family outside of Mora. His father, born in Finland owned a small farm he received from the government, and his mother was a maid. As the youngest of three children he would not inherit the farm when the time came and had to find work elsewhere if he wanted to make something out of himself. He decided to quit working on the farm after dropping out of school and joined the military instead, at the age of 14. Short education and training on the military academy did not prepare him for the inhospitable wilderness of the Silent world, but he proved himself bright, concise and capable and managed to live through dangerous situations as a cleanser. Years went and he became more and more experienced, maturing after observing the most horrible scenes. After damaging his knee severely in an unlucky fight against a troll, he was sent away from service temporarily to recover. He spent time at a recovering enclosure before visiting his home. He would then receive a well paid off-service mission to deliver a personal letter to a retired danish army officer. Uniformed and armed with crutches, he makes himself ready to limp himself to Bornholm with this new quicker transport to the south.

Items in Baggage: Rusty hunting rifle with limited ammo, pain pills, two packs of cigarettes and a lighter with the swedish flag, letter to danish officer, a set of clean civilian clothes, a box of quality pencils, a detailed diary from years in the field and a pair of binoculars. A pot of home-made soup and some money ('some money' is what the military gave him prior to the departure. Not much) as well.
Appearance: Samuel is skinny (Yeah, you loose weight laying around in a bed and barely eating for months) and hardly taller than the average. He has cold blue eyes and black short hair.
Language Capabilities: Speaks fluent swedish and finnish, can make himself understood in norwegian and danish. Has a hard time with icelandic.
Cat: No cat brought with him. Has experience with cats in the field.
Personality: Will probably expand in IC, but mostly appears to be quiet, earnest and resentful. Does not hesitate to do what he can to help others though, and knows what to do in most situations.
Other Information: Don't really know what to add.

Krytonus wrote:Character Application

...impressive. I love this writing so much. :)

Accepted on quality of writing, even though I don't like having characters with connections to lost cities in the Silent World.

But please revise your biography. I won't be accepting "scavenging" as a career, for the reason to be explained below.

Heidelski wrote:He moved to Mori when he was 18

First, the new capital of Sweden is spelled "Mora." Second, why would an Icelander move to Sweden, especially if he's poor, and have to scavenge for a living?

Heidelski wrote:Since he has traveled around Scandanavia and some illegla trips into Germany to find scavenged materials.

...yeah, no. The Silent World is really, really dangerous. Keeping a few railway workers alive to work on the Sveavägen route was a challenging task for the Swedish Army with all its personnel and equipment. Lone scavengers will not survive anywhere deep in the Silent World - especially civilian Icelanders who don't receive scouting training.

Scavenging in the Silent World is not something one does for a career. It's something that you might try once if you've nothing to lose, because if you do somehow make it back alive just once with something useful (like a set of encyclopaedias), you would be fairly rich really soon and can afford to retire.

Furthermore, your baggage list has a lot of military equipment and material. Let's just say that people who can afford military stuff in this new world generally aren't desperate enough for money to go on these absurdly risky scavenging trips.

There is of course the little fact that people who wander into old cities generally don't tend to come back. Even Tampere with its 200k pre-plague population is considered a very high-risk, nobody-enters-without-permission exclusion zone. Forget any big Scandinavian cities, let alone German ones.

Please revise your biography to suit, fix some of the more obvious spelling/grammar errors, and I'll accept the application.

Oh, right. Parous, you said you're Swedish, right? That might explain a lot of your errors.

In English, you also capitalise the derivative forms of proper nouns. This is different from Swedish which, to my knowledge, only capitalises the proper noun itself.

So in Swedish, what might go Sverige, svenska, svenskarna will all be capitalised in English, for Sweden, Swedish, the Swedes.

Just a for-your-information.

We have 4 accepted right now, and I think that is enough to make the IC, but not yet get things started.

I'll make the IC thread tomorrow so your characters can start interacting on the train.

The IC thread is up! Feel free to interact with other characters.

EDIT: When chatting with other characters, be sure to keep language barriers in mind. Anybody who speaks some kind of Scandinavian (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian) will be able to understand, if not easily, the other Scandinavian languages, but Icelandic and Finnish can only be understood by characters who speak Icelandic and Finnish.

The short answer is, yes.

Your application is your RP sample, as far as I care. As long as you can write decently, I don't care if this is your first RP or your ten thousandth.
